I’m genuinely not sure which I find scarier: That our president* really is that dumb…or that he’s become so senile that it’s impossible to tell the difference.

The people who criticized Obama for telling people to check their tire pressures or snickered that “Gore thinks he invented the Internet!” now think Trump is insightful for saying that the wildfires could have been avoided if they just went out and raked the forests.

I hope DT never sees this: I own solar panels and solar storage batteries. They are great at keeping my cell phone, my tablet and computer all charged up. No argument there.

As a former science teacher, I can attest to the poor scientific knowledge of our population. I was astonished as a high school teacher that some of my students, most from well-to-do families, had no understanding of fairly basic scientific principles, like why the Moon has phases and why we have seasons.

I drove down to Des Moines IA today to get my old Dual turntable rehabbed (yes it was worth it) and saw some really impressive wind farms on the way down in Iowa.

I also liked how there are no billboards along interstate 35 in Iowa. I also liked that people didn’t drive like dicks in Iowa. As soon as I crossed back into MN it was billboard city and dick drivers galore. I guess I’m dick driving proficient because I live here (and I’m also in another subset of dick drivers known as ‘Pontiac Vibe Owners’), but it was really noticeable that the dick driving quotient went thru the roof as soon as I crossed the border. We drive like dicks here.

I did manage to get to and from Des Moines without spending a dime in Steve King’s district.

MN drivers can be separated into two categories: City drivers and rural drivers. City drivers are aggressive, fast, will cut you off and then give you the finger because it’s somehow YOUR fault. Rural drivers are the ones doing 45 in a 60 in the left-hand lane, and when you try to swing to the right to pass them, suddenly decide that, oh, the right lane is more their speed, instead.

Yes. I saw lots of that. Another thing that really bugs me is the MN city drivers who, when turning left at an intersection, pull as far to the right as possible to get ready for the turn. It seems to be a cult.

I only do that on streets where there is a shoulder clearly demarcated by a solid white line, because apparently assholes in my town seem to think it’s a thing that they’re allowed to pass on the right even though it means crossing over the line onto the shoulder (where I have been nearly hit and definitely honked at by impatient people when I am out walking because they are passing in a place they shouldn’t).

Stunning new stat out of Ohio:

We already knew that Republicans got 12 of OH’s 16 US House seats despite winning only 52% of total congressional vote.

But get this: Republicans also managed to hold supermajorities in the Ohio legislature despite LOSING the total state leg vote.

1:24 PM - Nov 15, 2018

This surprises me, not.

I keep saying Ohio isn’t a full red state it is a frustrated purple because of all the gerrymandering. Now there is proof.

But hopefully the new procedure passed by a strong majority (around 75%) of Ohioans will make it less out of control.

And I understand the hope is to make it even more fairly decided…one step at a time.

Here is the new process, as stated by Issue 1 passed in May of 2018.

- Following completion of the United States Census, state legislators can adopt a new congressional district map if three-fifths of the legislature’s total membership vote to approve, including one-half of the minority party members. This map would apply for 10 years.

- If the legislature proves unable to adopt a new map, a commission will be formed to adopt a map. That commission will include the governor, state auditor, secretary of state, and four legislators, two of whom must come from the legislature’s minority party. A majority of the commission’s members, including two members belonging to the minority party, must agree on a map. The map would apply for 10 years.

- If the commission proves unable to adopt a map, state legislators will be given a second chance to adopt a map. The map would have to be approved by three-fifths of the legislature’s total membership, including one-third of the minority party’s members. The map would apply for 10 years.

With women then helping them as well.

Instruction and Advice for the Young Bride (goes to Trygve)

On the Conduct and Procedure of the Intimate and Personal Relationships of the Marriage State for the Greater Spiritual Sanctity of this Blessed Sacrament and the Glory of God by Ruth Smythers, beloved wife of the Reverend L.D. Smythers of the Arcadian Methodist Church of the Eastern Regional Conference. Published in the year of our Lord, 1894, Spiritual Guidance Press, New York City.

To the sensitive young woman who has had benefits of proper upbringing, the wedding day is ironically, both the happiest and the most terrifying day of her life. On the positive side, there is the wedding itself, in which the bride is the central attraction in a beautiful and inspiring ceremony, symbolizing her triumph in securing a male to provide for all her needs for the rest of her life. On the negative side, there is the wedding night, during which the bride must pay the piper, so to speak, by facing for the first time the terrible experience of sex.

My wife has dyed her hair purple before, and green another time. I once dyed my hair pink, and for a large portion of my Navy career had it dyed auburn. (Fun fact, when I was stationed aboard USS Saratoga, I decided to dye my hair back to its natural colour and got yelled at by my division officer for dying my hair - which isn’t against Navy Regulations in the first place as long as it’s a natural colour.)

Libertarianism means different things to different libertarians. My wife was a Libertarian Party member up to about fifty or so. People such as Gary Johnson or John McAfee are hardly in their twenties (though they might act like it).

Ben Sasse Knows Why There Are ‘Two Americas’: YOU’RE A BAD PARENT (Wonkette, more at the link):

Senator Ben Sasse, the smarmy junior Republican senator from Nebraska who gets Very Concerned about Donald Trump then bravely votes for everything Trump wants, took to the Twitter and offered some simple wisdom from a wise family doctor, just good parenting advice from an expert. It’s neat, plausible, and bullshit, to paraphrase Mencken. But just look at this fine quote, ready to put on your next needlepoint throw pillow:

Awww. If you love your children, you’ll limit the amount of time they spend glued to the TV or social media and all that, and you’ll be a GOOD PARENT!

After which, they detail people who oppose the view of “it’s television and video games, stupid” such as developmental pediatricians.

The whole thing is just bizarre. I picked my hair color based on how I felt at the time, where I was in my life. What my husband…or any other male…thought was nowhere in my mind. My worries were more around whether or not it was appropriate for work. I definitely walked that edge a few times. But men? No. Seems to me if a man can’t handle a change of hair color he doesn’t need to be around me.

it’s so cute now, but this will not end well as the trash panda gets older:

Going on 50 years ago, I worked as a counselor at a Boy Scout Summer Camp. Some scouts brought in a couple of baby raccoons. The nature area raised them and the camp cooks adopted them.

At the end of the year the staff assembled for the group picture. The cooks decided to wear their whites. And to have the raccoons posed on their shoulders.

As it turned out, this was not a good decision.

The raccoons were not used to large numbers of humans running about. And had been protected from humans by living mostly in cages.

Feeling threatened they climbed to the highest points they could. And feeling that point was unstable, they dug in with claws.

That high point, to the cook’s surprise was the top of the holder’s head. I still remembered the cooks wide eyed look as they tried to wave everybody away from them.

And of course, the raccoons, being nervous and not trained in bathrooms, relieved themselves. Which showed up quite well on the cooks white uniforms.

As I mentioned, not a good decision.

This book has been wildly popular amongst Christian groups for years, eschewing dating and promoting abstinence-only relationships.

I would be interested on any thoughts on setting up a system. Particularly on how to decide on an inverter.

My goal would be to run a cpap, preferably with humidifier for 3-7 days. I am assuming that I would need a pure sine wave inverter.

I was looking at Yeti Goal Zero portable power stations. But they seem to run 2-3 times the cost of assembling one’s own from components. And their charge times seem kind of rediculous. They do seem to have a nice interface, though.

My first goal would be to set up the storage part, the inverter, batteries, and whatever else is needed. The solar panels would be a second step after assembling the storage part.

Ultra-conservative Christians ban their kids from dating, because purity blah blah blah, and only allow meetings with parent-approved courtship material only under parental supervision. Marriages are also arranged by parents.

I think even the Amish are more liberal in that regard.

Latest mansplaining example on Twitter — about hair dye.

I have some color dye left over from Halloween shopping. I might just give my white hair blue highlights for kicks.

Fuck that noise. I dye my hair red. I didn’t realize that would make me stand out, REALLY stand out when I was in Japan. Yeah, I got stared at even more than the rest of the people on my tour. I don’t think I’d recognize myself without red hair.

A Statement on I Kissed Dating Goodbye (Goes to Christian author Josh Harris’s blog, disavowing the book he wrote).

This book has been wildly popular amongst Christian groups for years, eschewing dating and promoting abstinence-only relationships.

After hearing from others who told him how the book harmed them growing up, he has reëvaluated his position and now rejected it.

This blog post is a good read.

Yeah, as long as you keep in mind there are a LOT of people in their 20s and 30s who don’t think Harris went far enough in his apologies.

My problem with Harris is not merely that, but that he was C.J. Mahaney’s hand-picked successor (at a very young age, he was in his 20s) at Covenant Life Church in Maryland. You know, the same church where ole CJ covered up child sexual abuse. I’m pretty sure Josh knew what was going on and he hasn’t come clean. So he’s on my Probably Not A Nice Person List, which is different from my Shit List.

From that article:

Chad Hanson, a fire ecologist at the John Muir Project, told the Times that when the fire reached the logged region, “it spread very rapidly and people just didn’t have much time to evacuate in Paradise, so this whole notion that logging—so-called hazardous fuels reduction—was going to save the town is a dangerous falsehood.”

This is what has happened here in Oregon too. A controversial study of an earlier fire here around 2005-2006 showed that the areas that had been logged out burned more intensely than the areas that had not been logged. This is a big DUH! because logging practice leaves waste all over the logged areas. Waste that dries out and lies there waiting for a spark. It happened again here last year, the same exact shit.

Hair Furor thinks raking the woods will solve that…lol!

I can’t believe an old football guy like Browns GM John Dorsey would even consider this.

The team is beginning to look like an NFL squad and playing like it. Don’t fuck this up with stupid crap like this.

Daniel Dale gets a piece in WaPo.

Fact-checking Trump is kind of like fact-checking one of those talking dolls programmed to say the same phrases for eternity, except if none of those phrases were true. As any parent who owns a squealing Elmo can tell you, the phrases can get tiresome.

I didn’t realize he is doing this on his own time!!!

I’m a Canadian reporter, the Washington bureau chief for the Toronto Star. I wasn’t sent here to cover the honesty beat. I do most of the fact-checking on my own time, spending weekday nights and painful Sundays staring at rally transcripts in my pajamas.

My American colleagues have done wonderful investigative and explanatory journalism on Trump. But with some notable exceptions, like The Washington Post’s terrific fact-checking team led by Glenn Kessler, I don’t think U.S. media outlets have been persistent enough in fighting a daily battle for truth itself.

In the comments section of the Daniel Dale piece are two good ideas:

JP Magoots: It’s time for news organizations to start reporting when Trump says something that is actually true. That’s news. Ignore the daily deluge of lies. That’s no longer news, any more than “breaking news: the sun rose this morning!”

Gerry Cantwell: Here’s an idea for newspapers and broadcast media everywhere — publish a regular daily panel box on the front page of every newspaper and in every news broadcast headlined:

TRUMP’S BIG LIE OF THE DAY

Included underneath the header would be a couple grafs/bullet points/quotes detailing our serial liar president’s biggest lie of that day and how it impacts the reader/viewer.

The media should put it in our faces. That’s their job.

I’m going to defend them. Look at all the stats this year. Right now they have a better record than 10 or more other teams. And they have done that even with their coaching mistakes. If the NFL refs hadn’t screwed them over in several games, they very easily could be .500 in the league.

I know it is easy to put ‘em down. The new franchise suffered from the get-go because the owner that was rewarded it passed away a couple years in and his stupid son didn’t care and messed everything up for a good 12 or more years. They seem to be stabilizing with the hire of experienced GM John Dorsey, and they have a lot of talent.

Haslam though likes to hear his own name, and I think he is doing this for just that reason.

Two things about this tweet:

1) Is the Orange Anus talking about Mueller’s “confirmation” as FBI Director, or (more likely) as Special Counsel? Wrong in any case, as Mueller’s investigation was set up in a manner consistent with law which did not require, AFAIK, Senate confirmation (not that Trump would know or care).

2) Did he misspell Adam Schiff’s name on purpose? If so, disgusting even for Trump…
