Dumb fuck broke every one of the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling.

1. Always assume the gun is loaded, unless you personally have verified that it is unloaded.

2. Always point the gun in a safe direction.

3. Know how to use the gun safely.

4. Be sure the gun is safe to operate.

5. Use only the correct ammunition for your gun. OK, he didn’t break this rule, I guess.

6. Know your target and what is beyond.

7. Never use alcohol or over-the-counter, prescription or other drugs before or while shooting. This one I can’t be sure from the video alone.

8. Store guns so they are not accessible to unauthorized persons. He is *fucking* unauthorized from the video evidence.

9. Never provide a gun to someone not authorized to have it. See Rule #8.

I swear, guns in America is one of humanity’s sickest fucking jokes.

It is an interesting read. In that article, she asserts there could be four possible charges waiting to be unsealed:

Receiving and publishing stolen information is illegal
Conspiring to release stolen information for maximal damage is illegal
Soliciting the theft of protected information is illegal
Using stolen weapons to extort the US government is illegal

She notes the first two could trigger massive I Amendment questions, including thousands of various media outlets and journalists filing amicus briefs on behalf of Julian Assange (even if they hate the guy, because any such charges could be used against them).

The third she sees as possible, and the fourth she sees as likely (the CIA hacking tools stolen by Wikileaks which implicates Donald Trump, Jr). Bringing receipts, she shows that Wikileaks/Assange in conversation already deployed a barrage of those tools against the DNC during the election, and threatened to unleash more of them against either the Democratic Party or the US Government.

With pump action shotguns, you can fire shells as fast as you can pump the gun with the trigger depressed. You are correct, he was holding the trigger down, he pumped it, and it fired.

The film Three Kings kind of demonstrated the “hold the trigger pump action rapid fire” method.

Yep, it’s called a slam fire. Modern guns aren’t supposed to drop the hammer on completion of cycling but some older pump shotguns absolutely will do it. This video explains it:

Wow, I just read that. You are fortunate to have lived through it.

I wouldn’t have been so nice to the friend. I would have let him rot in the county lockup as long as they wanted to hold him.

I’m not afraid of a new gun owner or shooter who wants to learn the correct way to handle and use a firearm. They may make mistakes but will immediately accept correction from a range master or other shooter.

It’s the ones who claim they know what they’re doing and ignore basic precautions who scare me.

As Stonekettle says, there are no accidents with guns, only negligence. (I suppose you could put a caveat there such as the gun blowing up in your hands or something, but that is incredibly rare.)

I was thinking that just the other day about Georgia especially. I do have a feeling Kemp is not going to have an easy time. He has definitely shown his ass.

It reminds me of North Carolina and Pat McCrory and some of the issues he caused his state…and then he was gone after one term as governor.

Argentine Navy announced early Saturday that searchers had found a missing submarine deep in the Atlantic, almost a year to the date after it disappeared with 44 crew members aboard.

The submarine, the San Juan, was detected 2,625 feet deep in waters off the Valdes Peninsula in Argentine Patagonia, the navy’s statement said.

“White Magazine is no longer economically viable,” they said in a blog post.

“As much as we love what we do and are inspired by the positive impact it’s had, we need to draw the curtain on this part of our lives.”

Two special elections (appointments) coming up for the Nebraska Legislature, as two senators were elected to statewide offices. Districts 1 and 49 will open when they resign their seats to take up their new offices, and Governor Pete Ricketts is looking for people to appoint to those seats.

State senate seats which are vacated are appointed to be filled by the governor. In theory, the whole Unicameral could be arrested, and the governor could appoint his own legislature.

District 1 is a rural district (the largest city is Nebraska City). District 49 (the highest numbered district) is the southwest suburbs of Omaha, in Sarpy County.

If you want to apply for a seat, you can contact the governor. He’s taking applications for the legislative seats here.

You must be 21 or older, lived in the state for a year, be registered to vote, and I guarantee you’d have to be a Republican (though that part is not in the law).

We may be seeing the demise of the NRA in real time now. I wonder how many congressvarmints would be so opposed to gun safety laws if the firehose of money comes to an end for their campaigns?

Their “in your face” attitude about all guns, everywhere, has given sane gun owners a real headache. Douchecanoes wandering around parking lots with enough armament for an Army squad saying “you’ll pry my alt-penis from my cold dead hands” and weekly mass murders seems to have finally broken their grip on power.

Seeing the number of “A” rated congressvarmints voted out and “F” rated candidates voted in also shows that people like March for our Lives, Everytown, &c are having an effect (much like Mothers Against Drunk Driving did in the Seventies).

Not sure if anyone is watching in the US - you have plenty of things to worry about at the moment - but this is really historical stuff taking place in the UK on the brexit. I’ve never seen such political drama in my lifetime.

I think “The deal” - if anyone cares what I think - looks like a realistic middle ground, but seems like a gigantic waste of time effort and monetary uncertainty for what it really achieves.

So, everyone hates it.

There is sort of a suicide pact between the ardent “hard-brexiteers” who want to push for a straight no-deal exit, and those who want remain in the EU. Despite being diametrically opposed, between them they could topple this government and force a new election or possibly even a new referendum (I know when you asked me a while ago I doubted this could be possible- seems like I was wrong!).

No-one knows how that would go - the country still seems divided roughly down the middle on this issue, and that division transcends party, social and traditional liberal/conservative lines. It’s all about emotions and the heat is rising here…

I admit I don’t understand the rules surrounding the referendum (I was under the impression it was sort of a non-binding plebiscite). Also, I recall on the radio Theresa May offering up options of her deal, a hard Brexit imposed by the EU, or remain in the House of Commons (followed by a lot of cheering for the “remain” choice).

Jeremy Corbyn seems to want to switch to “all left, all the time” with no idea how to get there. (That and some troublesome issues with perceived or actual antisemitism - The Guardian summed that problem for the Labour Party and Corbyn up two months ago

I had gathered that immediately after the results had come in, most of the voters had a “WTF did we just do?” reaction, as if (1) they never expected the leave side to win and (2) they never expected the government would take the vote seriously. At that point, Cameron’s government would have risked being thrown out, but it could have just told everyone, “Thanks, but we were only kidding. This vote does not force us to follow through.” Cameron knew he’d created a shambolic mess, so he cut and run, leaving the Tories no choice but to follow through. Now, there they are, with May’s shambolic answer to the shambolic mess Cameron left her with.

Judging from afar, my advice would have been to ignore the vote, or at least postpone acting on it until everyone had a clearer idea what Brexit would actually mean. Dragging their feet, which politicians normally do when faced with intractable problems, seems like it would have been the best, and perhaps only sane response.

For me, the result perfectly reflected my thoughts, that leaving is probably the right choice, but only by a small margin.

However, the attitude of the EU negotiators immediately after the Brexit decision hardened my resolve that leaving is the right choice. The EU made it clear that they were going to make leaving as hard as they could for the UK to both punish it for daring to leave, and also to make it less likely that other countries would want to leave in the future.

This is absolutely the behaviour of a dominant person in an abusive relationship. “You want to leave me? I’ll make it so you regret your choice.” The future of the UK is uncertain outside the EU, but it’s still the right thing to do, imo.

Oh btw, the EU is heading for another massive financial crisis within ten years due to countries with ageing populations not being able to revalue their currency.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Lots of folks around here questioning local leaders as to why everyone seemed to screw up the response to the nor’easter. A few folks are demanding that DeBlasio resign over the failed response (and this is the kind of thing that doomed Lindsay’s term too). More people are questioning the Amazon deal to get the company to Long Island City, and that it may be requiring affordable housing proposed for the area to be relocated.

And all that pales in comparison to the horrific disaster unfolding in CA, with the wildfires and the death toll over 70 and more than 1,000 people missing. Trump’s on his way out there… and it’s going to be a shitshow (same as always). How can we predict it’ll be a shitshow? Because every time Trump goes and tries to appear leader-like, he come up short.

It’s always about him. Trump doesn’t care about the people, the victims, or the first responders. He’s using all of them as a prop, and he’s too busy blaming the victims for the disaster.

Trump’s too busy demanding the military waste military resources by stationing troops at the border to keep people from crossing into the US to claim asylum to bother noting that those troops would be more appropriately used to help with disaster relief in CA. It’s the same as after Hurricane Maria, Hurricane Florence, and Hurricane Michael. He doesn’t care about the victims.

As I mentioned above, the demographics of the populations of some of the countries in Europe are mildly terrifying, with large numbers of people approaching retirement age, but without people to replace them in the workforce:

Nothing was really broken pre-Brexit, so why try to fix something that was working more or less OK?

Yes, Italy and Greece still threaten to drag the entire EU economy down, and losing the bulwark of the UK’s economy is certainly going to make that problem even worse, especially if other nations decide to exit. I can certainly understand why the EU would not want the UK or any other member to cut and run, because making it easy would mean the end of the EU as an institution. The member nations of the EU essentially signed a contract when they signed up. Reneging on that contract is not quite the same as leaving an abusive relationship. In any case, the EU got hard-nosed only after the UK decided to go ahead with this folly. You’re essentially blaming the co-signer of a contract for trying to enforce the terms of the contract the other party (the UK) has decided to abandon.

As for the demographics problem, scores of nations around the world face the same issue. Italy and Greece are not unique in that regard.

I’m glad you’re happy with the results. We’ll see which of us was correct in another decade.

Staying in the EU also makes it easier for citizens of one country to work in another, such as Spaniards working in France. Separating from the EU and/or the Schengen Zone makes such mobility a lot more difficult.

There are old people in the UK and Germany, too, by the way.

Additionally, the UK has a different setup for pension schemes compared to Europe. In the UK money for pensions is saved as people work, and then the pensions are paid out of that pot of money. In most of Europe, pensions are paid directly from tax revenue, and there isn’t any savings to be drawn down.

To be clear, the UK is definitely going to have a tough time outside of Europe, and with a mildly aging population, but it is going to be nowhere near the scale of the problem across the EU.

China and Japan have much the same problem. Japan, because it has a relatively small population and an alarmingly low birthrate, and China, because it restricted the number of children a family could have until fairly recently. Neither country is especially welcoming to foreign workers, but I expect economic necessities will require some looser visa restrictions and more financial incentives to attract foreign labor. China has no national pension system, like the UK or the US, so caring for senior citizens falls on their children and grandchildren, who find it increasingly harder to provide adequate care.

If you still think that leaving the EU was a good choice after the chaos of the last two years, I don’t know what to tell you. Essentially, the UK wants to make a big hole in the EU border where it can toss whatever it wants that profits the UK. They would also like to be a tax haven for EU finances, control major EU projects like Galileo, and have Calais operate as a refugee camp so they don’t have to deal with them. And last but absolutely not least, Johnny Foreigner out.

UK politicians have used the EU as a punching bag for forty years, blaming domestic issues like shit rail lines and austerity on the EC, while ignoring that other states like Sweden and Denmark managed to avoid this horrible calumny somehow. They’re not the only government that does this, of course, but the EU has never been set up to fight back against it.

Brexit was never a considered move to improve the UK. This was a political stunt by Cameron to politically neuter the Eurosceptics. It was supposed to be off the table during the general election, where they expected to have to join a coalition with the LibDems. Except they won outright. Oops. No problem, the referendum will never pass. Except non-residents were excluded, our buddies from Cambridge Analytica and the Kremlin got involved, and the UKIP racists lied their asses off and stirred the pot, and voila.

So Brexit won, with utterly no plan that didn’t involve everyone else magically submitting to Britain for no reason, and the Brexiteers have spent two years quitting and avoiding responsibility for anything to do with actually negotiating a deal. The EU has been clear from day one that the four freedoms are inseparable, and the UK has wasted all this time trying to get them to agree to that exact thing in one way or another. Why should the EU give the store to the UK instead of doing what is in the interest of its own member states? The UK said that it would be easy to negotiate. Well, prove it.

I would argue most of the people voting had no idea what they were voting for, but only followed whichever propaganda Remain and Leave were dishing out. Since I have not lived in the EU or the UK, my opinion may be total shit, but from my perspective as an outsider, nothing seemed terribly awful about staying in the EU. Nothing was broken, as I said. The Leave campaign, though, made it seem like remaining would be the end of British civilisation as we know it.

If the Leavers somehow expect a return to the Empire of yore, it’s just not going to happen. That ship sailed after 1945.

Ignored completely that areas of Scotland that have been impacted by economic changes were staunch remainers and some of the biggest proponents of leaving were in fact among the most wealthy parts of England. That’s odd. Reed isn’t known to be a moderate from what I know. Not Freedumb Caucus. Anyhow. I think Pelosi will get enough to rally around her and this stuff by the Ryans, Moultons, etc will cool down. I think what a good compromise would be to have Nancy be speaker until 2020 and then you do a new start of leadership with hopefully a new Dem President and majorities in both houses.

Reed was my congresscritter for a while, when western NY was badly gerrymandered in the 2000s. The district then stretched from Elmira up to Rochester, and belonged for many years to Amo Houghton, a true liberal Republican back when New York had such things. Then it went Democratic for Eric Massa, until he flamed out, and that’s when Reed came in.

He triangulates very well. Of all the upstate Republicans who were challenged this cycle, he did the best at holding his seat (in a district that was redrawn after 2010 to be much, much redder and rural). He’s affable in person, talks a good game when he’s in Ithaca, the blue part of his district, but then goes and votes straight Trump and gets away with it.

If he didn’t lose this year, he could be in his seat another 30 years (he’s only in his mid 40s)

That’s a great question. Pence would be their best chance at having one of their own in the Oval Office. TBH I just don’t know Pence credibly distances himself from Trump for both a nomination and then a GE. It’s why if someone runs against Trump in the GOP primary, it will have to be someone who has been a long time critic of his like Kasich. Kasich has credibility whereas Pence does not nor would someone like Haley who also gets talked of as a potential inter-party challenger to Trump in 2020.

Unless the incumbent withdraws (a la LBJ), I don’t think a challenger wins the nomination. The party structures favor incumbents too much in presidential nominations. But as I’ve mentioned, any real challenge to an incumbent in the primary likely means they are done, from a historical perspective.

If they somehow managed to beat Trump in the primary… I think they’d get crushed in the general. Either because Trump runs as a sore loser independent, or because a big part of the Trumpitariat stays home

What I would do if I were her, I’d get some of the people elected within the last 10 years and younger than let’s say 54 put in important committees and leadership spots. Pelosi likely won’t be in the House by the end of next decade whether she passes away or decides to retire by then but many of these people will. I think she’s a much better leader than her detractors give her credit for. She’s a lightning rod for the R base but what her lefty critics ignore is that the right would make any prominent Democrat public enemy number one to their base. Obama definitely ended up being hated as much as the Clintons were by the Republican base and while I have no regrets at all about making Obama the nominee in 2008, I do think I was naive to think they wouldn’t hate him as much as they did Bill and Hill and Carter.

I thikn ideologues on both sides really ignore that politics is a people game. That’s why I would be hesistant to put Bernie at say DOL since I don’t ese much from Bernie that suggests he’s a do getter. You follow sports like I do I know. It’s kind of like how in order for a successful team to function, you don’t need all pros at every position, you just need people to fit your system well. I think political leadership follows the same principle. You don’t need someone staunchly lefty at every position but you need people who fit what they do and do it well.

Two special elections (appointments) coming up for the Nebraska Legislature, as two senators were elected to statewide offices. Districts 1 and 49 will open when they resign their seats to take up their new offices, and Governor Pete Ricketts is looking for people to appoint to those seats.

State senate seats which are vacated are appointed to be filled by the governor. In theory, the whole Unicameral could be arrested, and the governor could appoint his own legislature.

District 1 is a rural district (the largest city is Nebraska City). District 49 (the highest numbered district) is the southwest suburbs of Omaha, in Sarpy County.

If you want to apply for a seat, you can contact the governor. He’s taking applications for the legislative seats here.

You must be 21 or older, lived in the state for a year, be registered to vote, and I guarantee you’d have to be a Republican (though that part is not in the law).

That area was highly unstable in 1521, when Europeans defeated the Aztecs and their emperor, Montezuma II. We can’t risk sending the president there. You never know when Montezuma might exact his revenge.

It helps to see the negative shape with those particular diamonds. They have the curved sides that help make the “round” loops. I think if you look at the 8 of any card you can catch it.

One of the great lessons of art college was 2D design, where some of our problems were to make simple designs using black and white rectangles or circles where the white of the paper is as dynamic as the black shapes.

It really teaches you to look for the negatives in a design as sometimes they become the major pattern that leads the eye though the piece of art.

It even applies to 3D art like sculpture…the “holes” are as much a part of a design as the solid parts.

And sometimes squinting your eyes helps you see it, because it helps take your eyes off the obvious.

You can carry that into everything really. Think of what you are not being told as much as what you are.

I’ve tended to think that they stopped being really interesting after Revolver. The experiments later had a lot of impact on other people’s productions but if it hadn’t had their names on it, the later albums wouldn’t have done much other than collect dust in the cut out bins. The best moments of the solo work was when they did the things like what they did best in the earlier years (look at Lennon’s Imagine & McCartney’s pure pop songs with Wings).

But mixed among those ‘experiments’ were some of their finest songs - the White Album contains quite a few. And the post-experimental stuff - ‘Abbey Road’ in particular - also had its share of timeless tunes.

I’m in the same boat. This is the first year I have taken care of the horses by myself (albeit only two), and struggling with the water and feed in the snow and cold has just about finished me. Charley-horses in my legs during the night and plenty of aches and pains during the day. And it’s about time for evening chores here, if I want to get them done before dark. Whine, Moan!

It’s unfortunately true most places. Sometimes we are just products of circumstance whether that’s the times, economics, race, gender, etc. As you guys know, I do genealogical research, I was digging around the old Pittsburgh Post-Gazette archives to see if my grandparents ever made the news as kids. Found my dad’s mother, a honor student and part of her school’s newspaper staff prominent in a few stories and it just got me thinking that maybe if Nana had been born in a different time and with a little more status, maybe she could have become a journalist. It did help that my grandfather did treat her as an equal but it reminded me that my Nana was more than just my Nana, she was a woman with many fine intellectual gifts too. She was often reading as I remember.

I guess he like a lot of writers was a perfectionist but I thought the others movies I saw that he had a role in the screenplay were well written.

Didn’t know that. Really again shows you how our two countries are so similar but different too. Point of reference, when I visited my cousin who lives in England four years back, her little girl was begging to go to the pub. I knew before I went that the pub in the UK is a much more community centered place than our American bars but seeing it and hearing about the pubs with the playgrounds put a new spin. Snickers are good. Probably my favorite candy bar with Twix.

From what I learned about Nixon and Kissinger is despite the peace with honor crap, they just wanted the appearance of trying to win but what happened to the Vietnamese people didn’t matter a damn which I think you can see in how they dealt with other regimes. It likewise is why while President Ford and I would have disagreed on the war iteslf, I respect that he cared enough about the people fleeing Vietnam in its aftermath to support the refugees.

To be sure, bigotry and hate are learned human behaviors, not the default (for the most part; there’s always going to be some that might be considered to be “born bad”), and some people can learn and turn it around, but there’s a whole lot that don’t and won’t.

But, it takes time and energy to back out of behaviors that, when at fever pitch, give highs like crack cocaine and it’s much easier for them to just roll with it, no matter what anyone else says. Those people, they’re unreachable and impervious to any logic that contradicts their own POV; with them, the best we can do is to sideline and marginalize them so they can’t hurt anyone else.

As I recall, my dad, a staunch Republican and a conservative kinda guy (though not racist), loved All in the Family. It was a show we could watch and enjoy together.

My Alabama grandfather in law was that kind of person. Racist as the day is long he once snuck a young black man past a plan road block looking for him because he couldn’t abide lynching.
