OK so here’s the problem I have with the argument that we should be grateful that “adults” like Kelly & Mattis stay in the Administration rather than the worse people who could be there instead: They’ve inevitably gone along with the same policies those replacements would enact.

And by being the so-called “adults in the room” they’ve given these exact same morally repugnant policies a patina of respectability that they otherwise wouldn’t possess. So these complicit, gravitas having assholes are in many ways WORSE than their overtly monstrous alternatives

and like i said last thread….

The last few months have certainly proven that Kelly and Mattis have the least-earned badass reputations ever. They cave and cower so quickly, I’m convinced any halfway decent kindergartener could kick their butts.

Hi all, I’ve been reading but not posting much lately for various reasons, however I want to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving. You all do so much to improve my sanity and keep me on top of news stories.

We’ll be hosting a moderate sized gathering of 8 at normal dinner time since no one in the family really wants to eat in the middle of the afternoon. It also makes the prep more relaxed.
Yesterday’s rain brought up the termite alates today. The birds are feasting. Including a bunch of bluebirds all over the street in front of our house. Party!

…Parks was in her bedroom when a bullet fired from a gun outside, aimed at no one in particular, pierced a hole through her home and landed in her chest, officials said.

she died monday night.

it’s ghoulish enough, and they did arrest two people.

and still “stray bullet” is BULLSHIT

her death was caused by someone who just decided they were going to shoot bullets into her house, and she’s dead. A 13-year-old, on Thanksgiving week, on a school night, in her bedroom, and she died,” Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett (D) told reporters Tuesday.

that’s not a fucking ‘stray’. it was premeditated, deliberate and targeted.

Having been on an aircraft carrier, steam is reliable because it’s been used for 50+ years, but it fails occasionally. And, the carrier I worked on during construction and testing, it took a while to get it working properly. And you gotta have enough fresh water to make the steam, which means you have an entire system dedicated to that.

Getting the electromagnetic working will simplify some systems.

[…How crazy have things gotten?]

This happened six years ago: 16 year old shot 10 times, in Mexico, by a CBP agent, in the US, who has just been acquitted of involuntary manslaughter.

Richard Boren, who belongs to a group called Border Patrol Victims Network, said the implication of the verdict is that it gives agents “a green light to go ahead and continue shooting people in the back.

16 bullets. Maybe they can convict him of cross-border littering.

This is the one big plus when it comes to a parliamentary system—-If a budget isn’t passed the government falls and there are new elections.

And what really boils my plasma this time is hearing RepubliKKKlans saying that they will not pass a compensation bill for us if we’re shut down.

I was in the third grade. Around 1PM the second grade teacher came in to tell us Kennedy had been shot at.

Couple minutes later the principal came in and told us to go home that he had been murdered.

We were in shock. We left school, the custodian set the flag at half mast. He was crying.

Walking home, loud music coming from the house of the Republican committeeman.

He was celebrating.

Saw Jackie walking off the plane wearing her blood stained dress and I’m glad it was a black and white set we had because it toned the blood stains down.

Went to bed and had bad dreams of nuclear retaliation.

I remember watching TV Oswald coming out of the police station. Mom was on the phone saying she hoped he was put in the electric chair for what he did.

I saw Oswald get shot and Mom screamed in the phone that justice had been done.

World never was the same.

I was seven, second grade, Catholic school in Havelock, N.C. The nuns were keening. Eerie as hell. Got out early. Mom picked us up, in shock. My Dad is crying to Barber’s Adagio for Strings. Still can’t sit through that piece without weeping.

While it is right to have compassion for him and his family’s loss, he did something harmful and foolish.

It was not God’s will that he thought he was following; it was his own.

Too often this is true of religious people and this is the lesson: Do not mistake your own desires and your compulsion for God’s. Claiming martyrdom under circumstances like this is disrespectful to true martyrs.

He didn’t die because of his faith.

He died because of his pride and arrogance and foolishness. He made a bad decision. Natural consequences are not martyrdom.”

That’s the recipe I used! I’ll crank it down after 45 minutes then. That’s when I’m going to start the gravy anyway. I made the base of the gravy last night so it’s just the roux and go today.

I made a keto cheesecake last night too and the raspberry coulis this morning. The meat stuffing was made a few days ago so I’ll pop it in the oven shortly.

All good things.

All those wonderful turkey pictures, can we come over to your houses and eat? /s

(Dinner here will be cube steak sandwiches and canned beets.)

Posted early this morning to the Yahoo! Group I manage …

A variant of my annual post.

Sorry Canada, your federal Thanksgiving Day was last month. /s

A frequent argument which shows up from lots of apologists (including my E-mail) is “what do atheists have to be thankful for on Thanksgiving Day?”

This question is posited as an argument for God. Arguments of course are not evidence. Aside from that, the argument assumes that atheists cannot be thankful. It attempts to show atheists as hypocrites (a similar argument is used for celebrating Christmas Day).

Thanksgiving Day is essentially an end-of-harvest day. In the hagiography of the day in American culture, it was celebrated between colonists in Massachusetts Bay colony and Native Americans in the area in 1621, though there is little documentation this event actually occurred.

There is good documentation for the event in Virginia. The 1619 arrival of 38 English settlers at Berkeley Hundred in Charles City County, Virginia, concluded with a religious celebration as dictated by the group’s charter from the London Company, which specifically required “that the day of our ships arrival at the place assigned … in the land of Virginia shall be yearly and perpetually kept holy as a day of thanksgiving to Almighty God.” (courtesy of Wikipedia)

The day is a Federal holiday in the United States, the fourth Thursday of November (today). US states celebrated the day sporadically on different days, though Evacuation Day was popular (the day the British Army was evacuated after the Revolutionary War). President Abraham Lincoln called for a national day of Thanksgiving on the last Thursday of November in 1863. It was not celebrated during Reconstruction (the occupation of the rebellious states of Dixie following the end of the Civil War).

The day as it exists on the Federal calendar now only dates back to President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939, when he changed it from the last Thursday to the fourth Thursday by proclamation. It was fixed by Congress on that day in 1941.

So what do atheists have to be thankful for, when we don’t believe in any god? Why would we be thankful, and to who?

I am thankful to live in a nation which is mostly at peace.
I am thankful for those who help maintain our society (whether police or teachers, military or doctors, &c).
For a bountiful harvest, and those who toiled long and hard to produce that (ranchers, farmers, farm workers, migrant workers, &c)
For those who bring that bounty to market (harvesters, transport drivers, stockyard and grain elevator workers, &c)
For those who make that bounty available (butchers and bakers, grocers and those who work in all those industries).
For my family, with whom I am separated over this holiday but love (my mother and step-father, my sister and son).
For my friends, who agree and argue with me and have been supportive throughout my life.

But most of all for my wife, who is my partner-in-crime, my strength and support, and my love for as long as she’ll have me.

I once had a guy offer to faith heal my limp. In the middle of a Trader Joe’swait no it was Fresh Market. I deferred and he said “I have a pretty good success rate.” and persisted in wanting to pray for me, and it became very clear that it wasn’t about me, and it wasn’t about God. It was about his feeling of connection to the divine being an ego-enhancer, his mark of specialness. Like Simon Magus.

…and that’s what I see in stories like this.

Yeah, it can’t be emphasized enough that this was an act of hubris which treat the idea of witnessing like some kind of “I can do it more extreme” stunt. The American missionaries I’ve met in India treat the locals like spiritual real estate rather than people, and in turn the shallow Christianity they communicate to converts is about superiority of true belief and the entitlement to talk shit about the surrounding false believers.

The Sentinelese have never, ever interacted with anyone in any way but driving them away or killing them. People that study isolated tribes professionally have failed, and most of the data we have on them is approximations based on other Andaman peoples. Their language is an isolate that no one has any records of, let alone a lexicon that could facilitate a dialogue. There’s a record of every time someone in the 20th/21st century has even attempted contact, and they don’t even take gifts left on the shore.

This was never going to work.

You see the same thing in missionaries going to North Korea. They don’t care what the law is, and they’ll tell you it’s about the Gospel, not about their own hubris.

To a lesser extent you see it here, especially when the word gets out the new people in town are non-religious.

When the market is saturated, they try to pick people off from each other’s churches. Some people here have a no trespassing sign which has “I’ve already found Jesus.” (Not that the sign stops anyone.)

Immoral Minority has an article about the missionary who committed suicide on North Sentinel Island.

It includes a six-minute video about the island, which notes that it is against Indian law to travel there. That video notes only one time was recorded where the people of that island welcomed outsiders (and has a short film clip of that meeting).

Even after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, when the Indian government tried to send relief supplies, the islanders tried driving helicopters away with arrows and spears.

The Indian Navy enforces a three nautical mile limit around the island to prevent tourists and others from going to the island, but occasionally people like that idiot get past them.

I dry brined it. Both the white and dark meat were unbelievably moist. Hubby and Mom loved it. I thought it was ok because I don’t really like turkey. 😂 But hey, it’s Thanksgiving, so it’s almost a law.

The sausage stuffing was pretty good. Hubby didn’t love it, tho.

The gravy was tasty but a little too thin. I added some chopped up giblets to it. Needed more roux.

NBC also reported yesterday the cold in the East would be record-breaking for millions of people today.

They opined the cold would ground Macy’s balloons. (I don’t have a TV so I don’t know if that happened.)

Millions of Americans in the Northeast and Middle Atlantic states will wake up to the coldest Thanksgiving in more than a century, with high winds even threatening the iconic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, meteorologists said Wednesday.

The mercury in Philadelphia is expected to dip to a bone-chilling 29-degree high on Thursday, with similar shivering temperatures set for New York and Boston at 26 and 21 degrees, respectively, according to NBC meteorologist Kathryn Prociv.

29 is not “bone-chilling.” It is pretty cold for the East Coast, but we have several -15 or -20 days here every year I would trade for 29F.

PINKHAM NOTCH, N.H. (AP) — It’s downright cold atop Mount Washington, home to some of the most brutal weather in the Northeast.

The Mount Washington Observatory says it plunged to minus 26 (minus 32 Celsius) on Thursday morning. The observatory says that broke its daily record low of minus 11 (minus 23 Celsius).

It also broke the lowest temperature it has seen in November. The old record was minus 20 (minus 28 Celsius) on Nov. 30, 1958.

The observatory says winds over hurricane force — that’s 74 mph (119 kph) or higher — had wind chills in the range of minus 70 to minus 75 (minus 56 to minus 59 Celsius).

The wife of a British academic jailed in the United Arab Emirates on charges of espionage has spoken of her shock at his life sentence and accused the country of mishandling and misinterpreting his case.

Amid signs that Britain and the UAE are looking for a way out of the diplomatic conundrum, Daniela Tejada told CNN’s “Hala Gorani Tonight” program Thursday that “the UAE should have the sensibility and the humanity to recognize that it has been a misunderstanding and that Matt has paid for someone’s lack of judgment.”

Matthew Hedges, 31, a specialist in Middle Eastern studies at Durham University in England, was arrested by UAE officials at Dubai International Airport in May. He was held in solitary confinement for almost six months before being released on bail last month. Hedges and his wife have repeatedly denied the allegations of spying, but prosecutors insist the British academic confessed.

Wife, 19 year old stepson and I have a swanky cabin for the night. Heading out for buffet by the big stone fireplace shortly. I’m thankful for y’all. Among many other things. ;)

Dear Ferdinand,

When I was a child (mid- to late ’60s) my family lived in Port Angeles. We spent two weeks every summer staying at our next-door neighbors’ cabin on the north shore of Lake Crescent. Really, really nice memories.

Thanks for the reminder.

Any idea why videos in embedded tweets won’t play in Firefox and you have to open the original tweet in a new tab? Everywhere but here, that is, where you give us the little “shprockets” icon at the bottom.

I can’t really say — the code that displays videos in embedded tweets is completely under Twitter’s control. The “shadow DOM” is a protected sandbox that the parent web page can’t affect in any way.

I use Firefox with enough paranoiraware to take up a significant portion of my hard drive, and I don’t have that problem.

At work (and at home, for the time being), I just use uBlock Origin and call it a day, because it catches a lot of crap; a long time ago, I used to use NoScript (back when I ran Adblock Plus, before they tried to monetize their users with whitelisted “partner” ads) as well, but it was really more of a pain in the ass than it was worth.

At home, I’m in the process of setting up my new Asus RT-AC86U router running the AsusWRT-Merlin firmware to, in addition to the router’s built-in Trend Micro-provided AiProtection suite, also run Skynet (a major augmentation to the router’s firewall and to AiProtection), Diversion with pixelserv-tls (a router-based adblocker), and DNSCrypt (to force all DNS queries to resolvers that use DNSCrypt and/or DNS-over-HTTPS). I did a test run over the past few days with my “old” RT-AC56U and it did pretty well; it was nice not having to run browser-based adblocks and, once I get the new USB3 flash drive from Amazon tomorrow to use with the new router in order to run the extra software, it’ll be nice to have that extra protection back running.

His father, also William, was no slouch either:

William Jones, FRS (1675 - 3 July 1749) was a Welsh mathematician, most noted for his use of the symbol π (the Greek letter Pi) to represent the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. He was a close friend of Sir Isaac Newton and Sir Edmund Halley. In November 1711 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society, and was later its Vice-President.

Definers Public Affairs, the PR firm Facebook contracted to sling mud at critics after the Cambridge Analytica debacle, also conducted campaigns against Apple at the command of Qualcomm, according to a report Wednesday.

… Beyond NTK and media pitches, Miller himself penned an article accusing Cook of lying to President Donald Trump about building manufacturing plants in the U.S., according to an email reviewed by the Times. The piece, which included claims that Cook leaked a “fabricated story” on Trump immigration reform to the Times, was peddled to right-wing website GotNews, which published it without attribution….

Technically speaking, no one in China truly owns his real estate. He might own the building, but the land underneath it belongs to the State. The deed to the property is basically a 70-year lease agreement between the landowner and the building owner.

Yet few people in China are starving.

Yep, I remember that “autopsy report,” where they looked at the corpse of that year’s electoral ambitions, dug through the cirrhosis-pocked liver covered in bile, the necrotic intestines full of partisan bullshit, the blackened heart choked by hated…and concluded that the problem was they hadn’t done enough to get out their message. That the party was in fine form, could run a marathon without breaking a sweat, and so they’d needed to work harder to get “those people” to understand why Obama was the Anti-Christ who was going to destroy America.

“It was only through private property that our ancestors had enough food to survive!”

“But what about the Indians? Did they also have private land?”

“No, they had no concept of owning land like our ancestors did.”

“I heard on TV that the Indians taught the Pilgrims how to farm in America, which is how they survived.”

“That program lied, the Pilgrims were the ones who taught the Indians everything.”

“So what happened to the Indians?”

“Well, since they didn’t understand private property, our ancestors traded trinkets for the land, but that wasn’t enough. So they killed or moved the Indians off the remaining land and kept moving Westward. They were going to enslave them, but they grew too sickly from European diseases, so they brought over African slaves to work the land. And yes, the slaves were private property too. See how valuable owning property is?”
