Florida police charge an 11-year-old boy with manslaughter after his parents leave him home alone with loaded, unsecured guns. The parents have not been charged.

i’m going with it’s early yet (and i dont know if it’s him, her or both):

In Florida, it’s illegal to leave an unsecured firearm within reach of a child. Two handguns were recovered from the parents’ room, deputies said. No charges have been filed against Carter’s parents, but that is a possibility, Smith said.

and if they are, it wont be all i’d hope for the parents:

CL’d on the last thread…

So worked the overnight shift at the hotel, filling in. Went to church. Came home and napped a bit. Decided that I really ought to use up the 1 kg pork roast my ex gave me. So I sauted it in the instant pot, added some herbs, some cream of mushroom soup for liquid, roughly chopped carrot and potato and gave the stew button a poke. In less than an hour I’ll have dinner for the next couple of days. My pot was a lizard gift last year and I remain profoundly grateful.

President Donald Trump has canceled plans to spend the New Year’s holiday at Mar-a-Lago. A source who had planned to attend the Mar-a-Lago New Year’s Eve party said Friday Palm Beach was abuzz with members and guests talking about their own plans to bail on the Trump family’s annual gala.

It’s unclear whether Mar-a-Lago will let people wiggle out of their tickets at this late date. But evidently, some club members and guests have no interest in paying extra-high ticket prices if the president will not be in attendance.

People were willing to pay for the cachet if partying with the president, a source said. But with President Donald Trump staying in Washington, “people are bailing,” the source said. “It’s a lot of money (to spend) without his celebrity.”

yes it raised the age to buy to 21

add 3 day waiting period
and a bunch of school and mental health stuff

it’s not nothing at all but close

And as a non-gun owner I always ask who is going to protect us from the “legal” gun owners that too often turn out to be one-rage away from going on a spree.

Anyone have an answer to that? I haven’t come across one. Non-gun owners do not have much of a voice in any of the lawmaking. The laws always have to deal with gun owners due to what happens because they have such easy access to guns.

I’ve been waiting for that answer too and I never get a real answer from my ultra pro 2A friends. I’m sorry but it’s not a free society if you have to live in fear of some asshole losing control of his weapon. And despite what they say, there are a lot of irresponsible gun owners out there that do put the rest of us non-gun owners in danger and among them have been parents, family, guardians, etc of murderers.

As a legal gun owner, I wonder about the same things. They don’t care about those of us who want saner laws such as closing the private-sale loophole for background checks, waiting periods, registration, &c.

The folks who push these laws aren’t pushing them on behalf of gun owners either. They are pushing them on behalf of their real constituents (the NRA).

One note about the Ring Video Doorbell: The apps from Apple’s App Store work beautifully. I have both loaded to their respective platforms and I have so far very few problems. I tried to get the amazon version and stopped when I read the reviews. One would figure that paying for an app it would be a better one. According to the reviews it is not. So I did not download it. This means that my kindle fire tablet which I purchased to be used for this doorbell is not. Even when I went to the ring website it transferred me back to amazon’s App Store.

Could you not sideload the standard Android Ring app (which appears to be free)?

The HtG tutorial is on how to install the Google Play Store on a Kindle Fire device (they have two methods posted, one is to install the APKs needed to get the Play Store through the KF GUI [which is the one you reference] and the other, more advanced, method is to install it through ADB [where you can brick the device if something goes wrong because it’s more “to the metal”, so to speak]). However, if you have the time and the inclination later, it may be worth it to get access to the general Android app ecosystem if you want more than just the Ring app.

I believe that most Congressional Republicans were being blackmailed and hence their lockstep march along with Trump no matter what he does. Russians didn’t just hack into the DNC, after all.

I know he’s got a different style, but he attacks the guitar on his solos like SRV (and Albert King!) used to. I love seeing that.

The fact that the DNC is insisting upon language that makes it explicitly clear that funding can’t go towards wall construction seems to be the major sticking point, else the GOP would be on pressing the WH to sign off on the damned bill so they can move things forward.

My own guess* is that, since Miss Lindsay is, after all, a Senator, that his main job now is trying desperately to come up with some sort of compromise solution that will let the government reopen more-or-less in good time, and not have it look (reality notwithstanding) as if it is anything but a major defeat for President Asshole and/or a public embarrassment for the GOP. I’m thinking* that when Congress reconvenes next Thursday, Job #1 is going to be passing a budget CR that everyone can at least get passed with as little trouble as possible: The House won’t be a problem, the Senate will be: but if Lindsay and Mitch can cobble up some - ANY sort of agreement that placates the Toddler-in-Chief enough so as not to veto it, it can hailed as a victory all around (again, reality notwithstanding) - and we can all move on to the next round of dysfunction.

McConnell is already on record saying he won’t bring any bill to the Senate floor that Trump won’t sign.

The Senate is now operating under one-party rule, effectively gumming up the whole government.

McConnell doesn’t care. All he cares about is power.

And with such a statement, how does one really know what it is Trump wants to sign? We effectively have an executive branch run by one senator from Kentucky.

The Agreement which is part of the official public record, and can be looked up with a few minutes Googling, but then: the Trump line is that it’s BS, so BS it is…..

The claim is, like so much else emanating from these two men’s twitter thumbs, an either willful or ignorant misstatement, this one based on a DOJ IG Report on efforts to collect Strzok-Page texts that, because of a technical malfunction, didn’t get collected by an FBI contractor. It conflates efforts to replace texts sent using their FBI-issued Samsung Galaxy phones (where some 19,000 texts did not get archived, though the number itself is inflated because it would necessarily include a lot of overlap) with a belated effort to check their Mueller-issued iPhones. Worse still, it talks about texts that actually were recovered.

Like so much else about the wingnut attacks on the Mueller investigation, it’s about throwing as much chaff in the air as possible so that the final results are obscured behind a wall of “doubt.” Efforts to attack Mueller directly have been largely unsuccessful, so they’re going after the weak links in the hopes of disrupting the “chain of custody.” It’s like a defense lawyer dragging in some lab tech to argue that the evidence is “tainted” because it was mishandled at some point between collection and the courtroom.

Actually (cockeyed optimist as I am*) Shelby’s comments might illustrate a way out the current mess: i.e., a carefully orchestrated veto override. Scenario: the House (which has to take the lead) passes a CR for the budget along the lines of the old Senate 100-0 proposal (no Wall $). The Senate, after some dithering and diddling, passes it with a carefully-calculated majority to minimize Republican embarrassment, after which the Moron-in-Chief vetoes it. The House then overrides the veto, as does the Senate - again, by a carefully-calculated minimal majority. Trump shrugs, blames Congress for the lack of Wall; and goes on to rabble-rouse the rubes over it, while the rest of the government goes back to sub-normal. At least until Feb. 8.

*SPOILER: Not.
