Speaking of LMM, I got roped into going to the movies on Christmas Day with my mom and brothers to see Mary Poppins Returns; I wasn’t initially thrilled to be going out on Christmas Day when I just wanted to chill, but, while it’s not a movie I would have picked to see myself (of what’s playing right now, I probably would have seen Bohemian Rhapsody or Creed II), I was still mighty impressed with it.

Definitely felt like old-school Disney, with what looked to be actual cel animation for those relevant bits; LMM, Emily Blunt, and the rest of the cast were great, with nice cameos by Dick Van Dyke and Angela Lansbury.

Funnily enough I watched the Beauty and Beast remake last night with my niece. We liked it. I had to point out to an older cousin using a meme to bemoan participation trophies that it was the boomers/early Gen Xers that gave them to the kids. TBH of all the stupid shit I see about my generation and I see a lot of stupid shit, I’m looking at you hot takes about avocado toast and home ownership or how we ruined American cheese which looks unnatural af and only really goes good on hamburgers if anything at all but the participation trophy is my favorite because it’s not like when I was a kid, I had to have my trophy. Yeah I got my trophy when I was 9. I probably had it in my room for a couple years and then it probably got lost during a move or room cleaning. Nearly 20 years after my last Little League game where I probably struck out, I don’t have any memories of my trophies. I do of my successes. Sorry to ramble but the whole crap on millennial for participation trophies is a trope I really hate and it makes me want to scream whenever I see it as a cheap attack on people my age by the people who are the same age of the parents and coaches who gave out the trophies.

That’s how history should be presented. If we’re taught that history was only good, how do we learn from the past? It’s not about “shaming” or “white guilt”, it’s about knowing that once upon a time that white people were so sensitive that they needed to make laws that separated things as mundane as water fountains by race and they needed to be taken kicking and screaming by that MLK guy we all love and sometimes use to shame black protesters we dislike to get beyond that.

Or one of my uncles too. VA was still segregated when my uncles were coming of age in the early 50’s with my Dad. My grandmother has told us- she was from Pennsylvania about her shock as a waitress when she first witnessed racial discrimination in restaurants. It shocked her. Not that she was unaware of racism or somehow immune from it herself but seeing kids denied a meal because of their race genuinely shocked her.

I first applied in 2006 and did not complete the process and get my visa until April 2008. It’s not like you can decide to come here legally and just waltz across the border two weeks later.

Going through the whole process was challenging enough to do in a free country with well enforced laws. In a poverty stricken area where I’d have to worry all the time about drug dealers and mercenaries trying to blow my head off? Not a damn chance.

I’d run like hell, just like these people are doing.

There is NOTHING illegal about asylum. Hell, the things these people are trying to escape are why we have asylum laws in the first place.

I do know that my grandfather’s mother had to wait for my grandfather’s father though until she could leave NY though. And that chain immigration that Trump was bitching about all of last year? Every group that has ever come here did that. Hell Trump’s own mother was a product of Scottish siblings that had emigrated. My grandmother’s mother stayed with an uncle for a couple years after her arrival. Her father had stayed with a couple of distant cousins. The long truth of it is these anti immigration people don’t want people to follow the rules. They want people to look like them. They’re threatened by what is new.

I hate saying it but I do feel I’ve grown a little more distant with my one conservative friend. We still talk obviously and I really should give him a call tomorrow since he’s going through a tough time in his life on a personal level but it just breaks my heart when people can’t see what you and I can that the separating of the children is just so cruel. For me when the talking heads say “Oh just get over your differences, it’s only politics,”, I find that a very white privilege thing to say. As you and the others here know, I did work in a law firm that dealt with a lot of immigration cases, and while I won’t disclose personal details of my clients here out of respect, I do know we had clients that definitely have been petrified about what Trump’s immigration policies meant for their families and them. These all being good, hardworking people who came here for a better life because they believed in our country. They believed like Mr. Khan did in our country. I think that’s why I despise Trump so much. He attacks the very beauty of what it is to be an American that it doesn’t matter where you start whether it’s in an American hospital like me or overseas like many of my clients I did, it’s where you end up.

Easy to do. The funny thing though is the Argentina military fascists hated the Perons though. But both were right wing. There are thousands of children in Argentina whose biological parents were murdered by the state and then raised by Argentine military families or allies of the regime. It’s a disgusting chapter. Well there’s a few factors here. He is my oldest friend. Known the guy since before my brother whom I’m closest in age was born and what he’s going through is a tough thing for anyone to go through. It’s something I’m sort of experiencing myself a little too but it’s really tough for him for his reasons and I understand that. My kids got it, but their dad took them while he had them. I was planning on getting it that weekend, too, and life interfered. And then I got really sick, sicker than I think I’ve ever been. I’m still not quite over it, so I’ve hesitated getting the flu shot yet. Ugh. The conundrum.

I went from 1976 to 2008 with no flu shots, mostly due to laziness on my and my parents’ part. May have had the flu a few times, but in retrospect, herd immunity save my ass.

This year seasonal flu appears to be three strains of H1N1:

In 2009 (IIRC) the Chinese government was so worried about bird flu and swine flu that all teachers were required to be vaccinated. We foreign teachers had the option to refuse. I got the vaccine and my colleague (a Brit) declined. Neither of us got ill, but there were some schools in our area that closed for a few days because so many kids were ill.

I remember with the H1N1 when the vaccine came out, even first responders were afraid to get it. There were limited doses and as soon as the first responders didn’t get theirs and next up were little children and their families, we went right to the health district and got the vaccinations. The kids had to go a couple of weeks later to get a second dose. I wasn’t taking chances with their lives!

My wife and I got ours as soon as they were available, though that was more luck than design. Safeway in Scottsbluff, flu shot sign, let’s do it. (Go in for a special trip for a water sample to the lab, come back with a sore arm.)

While I can get them at the VA, that’s a long drive for me. CHAMPUS/Tricare will pay for my wife and me.

Repealing the ACA though would screw up a lot of people on immunisations: The price on the receipt for anyone with insurance is $0.00 due to the requirement to completely cover vaccines.

I bought a 21-jewel self-winding watch online, made by a Chinese firm, GuanQin, for a fraction of a similar Swiss-branded watch. Anyway, I read about GuanQin on a watch fansite, and the reviewer said the movement was just as good as a Swiss movement, because the Swiss watchmakers have their movements assembled in China anyway.

If your brother was born in 1959, I have no doubt he saw people who were former slaves. I’m not sure when the last slave died but I imagine they died less than 50 years ago. I’m only 31 but I have a great grandparent born not even a decade after the war’s end.

They would do that in the Navy when I was in (called “smokers”). I was entirely uninterested in such things, and the claim “it reduces violence” seems to be one of those “common sense” things everyone knew but no one could demonstrate.

The Navy ended them while I was still in the service. They are now back.

Back in 1905, a smoker was arranged between a black sailor and a Jewish sailor (yes, it was done for racist reasons). At that time, Republican President Theodore Roosevelt was a fan of boxing, so the administration promoted smokers across the Navy.

He also oversaw driving African-Americans out of the Navy (whether he knew about that policy or not). The point of that particular smoker was to prove the superiority of whites (and for the purpose of this, the Jewish sailor was white). He was the one killed.

So probably the “last slave” died some time in the mid 1970s.

While you might be right in principle, as a matter of practical politics (something Nancy Pelosi is quite good at) it is going to be in her/the Democrats’ best interest to come up a halt to the present government shutdown. In which Republicans have a stake, too, as their plan to shift all the blame to the Dems (as in “Schumer Shutdown”, etc) doesn’t seem to be getting a lot of traction with the public. That may change if the shutdown drags on, especially given the biased nature of the “mainstream” press: so the incentive to come up with some -any - solution to the Wall impasse is fairly pressing.
Unfortunately, I think the center ring for the circus is going to be the Senate, not the House.

She does get in his head for sure. I think what puts her lower on my list though is I haven’t seen much real beef to her on FP. I’m interested in seeing who will be advising her though. I know this may sound silly but when I saw that Samantha Power was advising Obama, I knew he was pretty serious about FP. I had actually first heard of Samantha Power when my then Republican Congresswoman recommended her book on genocide when he spoke to us when I was in high school a few years prior to that. But I like Warren as both a a Senator and person and I think she will bring a lot of good ideas to the discussion. I just want someone else as a nominee but it doesn’t mean she’s incapable of contributing positive ideas.

Unlike Trump, I have no doubt she would seek out expert advisors to help her in areas she is not well-versed (such as foreign policy).

I really think the orange elephant anus in the room will mitigate some of that. However, I do think that’s a fair concern. I think it will be up to the candidates that lose to rally their supporters around the winner though. I’ll always be proud of gosh it’s going to be two years already starting tomorrow that while Tom Perriello whom I supported for governor over Ralph Northam lost the primary, he rallied his supporters and Governor Northam won by a huge amount and we got tons of Dems elected to the state legislature in 2017 too and of course swept governor, lt governor, and AG.

I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m a few degrees from the first World Series. Dad’s Pap-Pap(his mom’s dad) was according to family lore a personal friend of Hall of Famer Honus Wagner and he apparently liked going to baseball games in Pittsburgh where he and Nana’s family lived. I believe I even found an old article identifying him as a semi-pro player in the late 1890’s but I’m not sure if it’s him but I strongly suspect it is since he had a rare name and I haven’t found anyone else in the area with the name that would be close enough in age to be the same guy in my research. Really makes me wish I had known him or at least that my dad and his siblings had known him better but he died when Dad was just an infant and the older siblings didn’t know him that well since my dad’s parents moved around.

In his now-clockwork early-morning tweetstorm, Donald Trump lauded his own surprise-to-the-military actions on removing U.S. troops from Syria, suggesting that he be dubbed a “national hero” for taking on ISIS in his fashion. “If anybody but Donald Trump did what I did in Syria, which was an ISIS loaded mess when I became President, they would be a national hero,” Trump wrote. “ISIS is mostly gone, we’re slowly sending our troops back home to be with their families, while at the same time fighting ISIS remnants.” He added: “I campaigned on getting out of Syria and other places. Honestly,, I’m a bit uncomfortable with this apolegtic implication of “Happy New Year, but I’m really sorry I can’t say it at the EXACT MOMENT it hits New Year.” What’s wrong with what we did before mobile phones and social media, and just say “Have a great New Year”, or something similar?

My wife and I have a standing invitation to travel to Russia with my sister-in-law. (She frequently travels there as she was once a Soviet citizen and has family there.) We have a standing “no thank you.”

There are things which would be interesting to see there (the Kremlin, the Hermitage Museum, &c) but not enough to entice me.

I’ve always liked the Russian nesting dolls. I have one of Russian/Soviet leaders: Putin, Gorby, Khrushchev, Stalin, & Lenin. Got that in Berlin tho near Checkpoint Charlie. Russia is a fascinating place. I too would like to visit one day. I enjoyed Slovakia and Poland. Totally a different experience in large part because I was visiting family too.

When I was younger, most Republicans supported this nation and democracy. Our Republican governors in Illinois certainly did not promote tyranny — but then again, they were limited in power because the legislature is solidly Democratic. Our Republican Senators were not ideologues and would cooperate across the aisle. Politics has changed radically since the Gingrich “revolution” and Citizens United. McConnell is working on destroying this nation and there aren’t any Republicans in the Senate who object to this process at all. If ALEC gets its wish to rewrite the Constitution, there will be no turning back.

Do I sound like I have a low opinion of the human species? Oh hell yes. The only thing that was ever likely to force people to take climate change seriously was continuous sirens—big, bright, loud continuous sirens. Frankly, I’d be pretty happy if a tsunami destroyed the White House, just like in the movies. Or maybe a heat wave killed a hundred thousand people in Paris. With apologies to Washington DC and Paris, this is what it’s going to take to get the panicked level of attention we need: something big, something clearly climate related, and something that kills a lot of white people.

So 2018 was a good year for climate change, and we need more like it: bad enough to get people’s attention before the really bad stuff starts.

-25C with a windchill of -31C. Now, there’s the winter we’ve been missing.

12°F (-12°C) with snow, and a wind chill of -12°F (-24°C) here now. Temp goes down to -4°F (-20°C) tonight.
