The GOP kept “BENGHAZI!!!” going for twice as long with 9 different investigations including a special committee and found nowhere near as much as Mueller did in just 1 year. 4 years and the GOP never managed to score a single indictment, much less a conviction.

That sounds like a desperate cry for attention to me which I find pretty sad since TBH before the revelations came out about him, I liked his comedy but this is just going to be sad since it’s going to be Louie acting like his problems were the cause of a liberal conspiracy rather than his own fuck ups which is the right wing MO to a tee. And it’s going to make him a lot less funny by default since right wing humor sucks.

Speaking of LMM, I got roped into going to the movies on Christmas Day with my mom and brothers to see Mary Poppins Returns; I wasn’t initially thrilled to be going out on Christmas Day when I just wanted to chill, but, while it’s not a movie I would have picked to see myself (of what’s playing right now, I probably would have seen Bohemian Rhapsody or Creed II), I was still mighty impressed with it.

Definitely felt like old-school Disney, with what looked to be actual cel animation for those relevant bits; LMM, Emily Blunt, and the rest of the cast were great, with nice cameos by Dick Van Dyke and Angela Lansbury.

Funnily enough I watched the Beauty and Beast remake last night with my niece. We liked it. I think the Disney princesses she has made her favorites: Belle, Moana, and Elsa/Anna are great role models for little girls and the stories are great. Moana is my favorite of the recent Disney movies though.

I had to point out to an older cousin using a meme to bemoan participation trophies that it was the boomers/early Gen Xers that gave them to the kids. TBH of all the stupid shit I see about my generation and I see a lot of stupid shit, I’m looking at you hot takes about avocado toast and home ownership or how we ruined American cheese which looks unnatural af and only really goes good on hamburgers if anything at all but the participation trophy is my favorite because it’s not like when I was a kid, I had to have my trophy. Yeah I got my trophy when I was 9. I probably had it in my room for a couple years and then it probably got lost during a move or room cleaning. Nearly 20 years after my last Little League game where I probably struck out, I don’t have any memories of my trophies. I do of my successes. Sorry to ramble but the whole crap on millennial for participation trophies is a trope I really hate and it makes me want to scream whenever I see it as a cheap attack on people my age by the people who are the same age of the parents and coaches who gave out the trophies.

That’s how history should be presented. If we’re taught that history was only good, how do we learn from the past? It’s not about “shaming” or “white guilt”, it’s about knowing that once upon a time that white people were so sensitive that they needed to make laws that separated things as mundane as water fountains by race and they needed to be taken kicking and screaming by that MLK guy we all love and sometimes use to shame black protesters we dislike to get beyond that.

Psychopaths drink their coffee black, study finds

If you like your coffee black, you may be someone who prefers strong flavours, takes good care of their health, or just wants to drink their coffee the way it’s supposed to be drunk.

Or, you may be a psychopath.

At least, that’s according to a new study published in the journal Appetite, which found a correlation between a love of black coffee and sadist or psychopathic tendencies.

The research surveyed more than 1,000 adults, asking them to give their food and flavour preferences. The participants then took a series of personality tests assessing antisocial personality traits, such as sadism, narcissism and psychopathy.

The study, carried out by researchers at the University of Innsbruck, found that a preference for bitter flavours was linked to psychopathic behaviour.

University of Innsbruck? Phooey! This is obvious Russian disinfo-false flag cointelpro, probably sourced from the kitchen of Putin’s dacha. I drink only the pure, wholesome, godly black coffee, with no cream, milk or other decadent cow or soy products to sap my body’s vital fluids!

Or one of my uncles too. VA was still segregated when my uncles were coming of age in the early 50’s with my Dad. My grandmother has told us- she was from Pennsylvania about her shock as a waitress when she first witnessed racial discrimination in restaurants. It shocked her. Not that she was unaware of racism or somehow immune from it herself but seeing kids denied a meal because of their race genuinely shocked her.

Immigrating legally requires a lot of paperwork, traveling and money. I’ve spent over $10 000 all told and I still have to cough up another $1200 to get my citizenship. It also takes time. I first applied in 2006 and did not complete the process and get my visa until April 2008. It’s not like you can decide to come here legally and just waltz across the border two weeks later.

Going through the whole process was challenging enough to do in a free country with well enforced laws. In a poverty stricken area where I’d have to worry all the time about drug dealers and mercenaries trying to blow my head off? Not a damn chance.

I’d run like hell, just like these people are doing.

There is NOTHING illegal about asylum. Hell, the things these people are trying to escape are why we have asylum laws in the first place.

Many of them know asylum is legal. The point is the propaganda.

“Why are people from Asia and Europe expected to get a visa and do it the legal way?”

Visas aren’t required to travel to the USA from most places, including almost all countries in Asia and Europe.

Chinese citizens must get a visa, but now that visa is valid for 10 years. But each visit to the US is limited to 90 days, IIRC.

Motherfucker, I’ve done much more genealogical research than you ever have and I can’t even tell you that about my line. I do know that my grandfather’s mother had to wait for my grandfather’s father though until she could leave NY though. And that chain immigration that Trump was bitching about all of last year? Every group that has ever come here did that. Hell Trump’s own mother was a product of Scottish siblings that had emigrated. My grandmother’s mother stayed with an uncle for a couple years after her arrival. Her father had stayed with a couple of distant cousins. The long truth of it is these anti immigration people don’t want people to follow the rules. They want people to look like them. They’re threatened by what is new.

RIP, sir.

French Resistance hero who saved hundreds of Jewish children dies aged 108

Georges Loinger used all his skill and cunning - and a large dash of chutzpah - to rescue Jewish children from deportation and near-certain death during the second world war.

The French Resistance hero, who has died at the age of 108, would set up ball games for children along the Swiss border in France. Having trained the children to run like the wind, he would throw the ball over the border and tell them to chase after it and then keep running.

I think they believe it’s as easy as getting your state driver’s license or a US citizen getting a US passport. One office, one visit, one fee and Bob’s your uncle.

It’s only that easy in the Schengen zone. Every other place in the world, you have to jump through dozens of hoops to become a citizen — or if you’re a rich person, a sizable investment in the local economy.

Just to get a residence permit in China, I had to first get a Z visa (work visa) from the Chinese consulate before I came to China. This required an employer’s sponsorship and a shit ton of documentation, Then once in China, we had to visit four different offices to process different forms, and then I had to wait 20 days before my passport was returned to me with the residence permit affixed. I’m in that 20-day period now, because I renewed my passport earlier this month.

By ‘free speech’ Doug Ford and his fellow barbarians mean, “You have to let racist, violent scumbags on to your campus.”

Next week they’ll announce, “Leftists, by which we mean anybody we disagree with, are a danger to freedom and must be silenced.”

Because barbarians don’t care about freedom, which limits power. They only care about power.

P.S. If the law is challenged in court and the challenge is won, Doug Ford will simply invoke the ‘Notwithstanding clause’ of Canada’s Constitution and the law goes into power anyway.

I hate saying it but I do feel I’ve grown a little more distant with my one conservative friend. We still talk obviously and I really should give him a call tomorrow since he’s going through a tough time in his life on a personal level but it just breaks my heart when people can’t see what you and I can that the separating of the children is just so cruel. For me when the talking heads say “Oh just get over your differences, it’s only politics,”, I find that a very white privilege thing to say. As you and the others here know, I did work in a law firm that dealt with a lot of immigration cases, and while I won’t disclose personal details of my clients here out of respect, I do know we had clients that definitely have been petrified about what Trump’s immigration policies meant for their families and them. These all being good, hardworking people who came here for a better life because they believed in our country. They believed like Mr. Khan did in our country. I think that’s why I despise Trump so much. He attacks the very beauty of what it is to be an American that it doesn’t matter where you start whether it’s in an American hospital like me or overseas like many of my clients I did, it’s where you end up.

It is so hard to emigrate to the US and then get a green card and eventual citizenship that only people who really, really want (or need) to do it ever bother with it. It’s not a decision taken lightly, and the people who become citizens (or residents) are as “true American” as anyone born in the States. Xenophobes don’t see that reality. Easy to do. The funny thing though is the Argentina military fascists hated the Perons though. But both were right wing. There are thousands of children in Argentina whose biological parents were murdered by the state and then raised by Argentine military families or allies of the regime. It’s a disgusting chapter. It’ll take Argentina a long time to recover from it. Even longer than Peron hiding out the Nazi war criminals IMO because that kind of policy could have been fixed but this policy still lingers a lot to this day with grandparents who never got to know their grandchildren because of that cruelty. South America’s a great example of why I don’t like seeing Capitalism being equated to freedom. Argentina and Chile are great examples of why that’s not the case.

But I guess what I really don’t like about the whole OH THEY’RE SO EASILY OFFENDED is the truly great comedians have always found ways around stuff like that. I was watching North by Northwest for the first time and it TBH was the first time I’ve ever seen Cary Grant and I was just amused with how he slyly was talking about things that the censors wouldn’t let him get away with if he had been more blunt about with Eva Marie Saint. It was great. And TBH the best comedy show in the Obama years was Key and Peele, and Jordan Peele and Keegan Michael Key are two very gifted performers. A lot of their stuff is Chappelle inspired no doubt but a lot of it fit perfectly for the Obama era since Jordan and Keegan like President Obama too are biracial and I think that made their humor all the more funny to me. Well there’s a few factors here. He is my oldest friend. Known the guy since before my brother whom I’m closest in age was born and what he’s going through is a tough thing for anyone to go through. It’s something I’m sort of experiencing myself a little too but it’s really tough for him for his reasons and I understand that. I also think he just got caught by stupid right wing simple bs and it’s not really him.

I was a little annoyed with the bigot woman for boasting about the $12 shortfall she covered for the vet at the grocery store. From the tweet you cited:

Just left the grocery store & I’m PISSED. Raise your hand if you think there’s a fucking PROBLEM when an elderly vet is $12 short to buy his food (yes, I covered him) but a group of non- English speaking ILLEGALS pays for 2 CARTS OF GROCERIES with FOOD STAMPS

Betcha it didn’t happen. Sort of like Ronald Reagan’s young bucks buying t-bone steaks on food stamps.

But say this did happen: A veteran was indeed short of money at the till and a person paid the difference. An act of kindness.

In my experience, a non-political person, or a liberal-leaning person, would have paid the money and that would be it. If it became apparent to the wider world, it would be because a third party (or the recipient) made note of the charity.

Whereas a conservative-leaning person seems to make it about themselves, or uses it as a weapon.

The dog-whistles “illegal” and “veteran” sort of give it away. “Why are we giving money to those (insert group) when we should be taking care of our veterans?” I can’t say how many times I’ve heard that myself, and I don’t recall any of them giving a crap about me when I was homeless (except to tell me to get a job you moocher).

If our friend here is concerned about veterans being short on money to buy food, perhaps he or she could vote for politicians in the local area or the federal government who give a crap about that. Hint: It’s never been conservatives.

You could Mad-Libs this shit, because it’s always pretty much a cookie-cutter rant. Like Jacob Wohl always stumbling across a “hipster coffee shop” where the liberals are secretly Trump lovers, these wingnuts always have a “vet I helped out” story.

But it’s never simply “a veteran,” it’s always “a homeless veteran” or “a disabled veteran” or “an elderly veteran.” They always have to have a qualifier because that just makes the act of “charity” much more meaningful than if it were simply a vet.

And in place of the “illegals,” you could substitute the stereotypical “young buck” who sidled up to the register with a fresh lobster and case of beer or the “welfare queen” with a mess of ill-behaved kids who look like they all have different daddies.

About the only thing missing from this tweet (but, of course, in the replies) is the bit about how, after paying with food stamps, the “other” then took their groceries out to a brand-new vehicle (generally whatever is priciest at the time). And always flaunting something that shows they’re secretly bilking the welfare system, with jewelry or flashy clothes being the sign of yesteryear and “new” electronic devices being the sign these days.

How many people do you know who let you in on their financial situation? Did that conservative actually report the welfare fraud? I even give them the sites for their states to report welfare fraud. CDC recommends the vaccine every year.

This year seasonal flu appears to be three strains including H1N1:

Vaccine viruses included in the 2018-19 U.S. trivalent influenza vaccines will be an A/Michigan/45/2015 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus, an A/Singapore/INFIMH-16-0019/2016 (H3N2)-like virus, and a B/Colorado/06/2017-like virus (Victoria lineage). Quadrivalent influenza vaccines will contain these three viruses and an additional influenza B vaccine virus, a B/Phuket/3073/2013-like virus (Yamagata lineage).

cdc.gov (CDC updated recommendations for this year’s flu)

Edited strains, as only one is H1N1

In 2009 (IIRC) the Chinese government was so worried about bird flu and swine flu that all teachers were required to be vaccinated. We foreign teachers had the option to refuse. I got the vaccine and my colleague (a Brit) declined. Neither of us got ill, but there were some schools in our area that closed for a few days because so many kids were ill.

Edited strains, as only one is H1N1

I’ll see about getting my flu shot this next week. Better late than never. I think the stress I’ve been under lately has really compromised my immune system.

Idiots.

I have no doubt sexual harassment is rampant in ALL campaigns. Here’s a chance to take leadership of an important issue, and seize the initiative, but their mindset is get offensive and blame other people.

(And seriously….if Sanders took the bull by the horns and got itself clean, it’d change my mind a little bit on him. But I very much think he’s like his followers in this respect.)

I remember with the H1N1 when the vaccine came out, even first responders were afraid to get it. There were limited doses and as soon as the first responders didn’t get theirs and next up were little children and their families, we went right to the health district and got the vaccinations. The kids had to go a couple of weeks later to get a second dose. I wasn’t taking chances with their lives!

My wife and I got ours as soon as they were available, though that was more luck than design. Safeway in Scottsbluff, flu shot sign, let’s do it. (Go in for a special trip for a water sample to the lab, come back with a sore arm.)

While I can get them at the VA, that’s a long drive for me. CHAMPUS/Tricare will pay for my wife and me.

Repealing the ACA though would screw up a lot of people on immunisations: The price on the receipt for anyone with insurance is $0.00 due to the requirement to completely cover vaccines.

I’ve said to this guy’s face a few times the conspiracy consisted of Clinton being more popular with Democratic voters, some of whom were put off by his carpet bagger bullshit. Never sinks in.

We should pass a Constitutional Amendment that Mickey Mouse will never enter the Public Domain so that Disney lobbyists will stop getting copyright extended and we can go back to the system we had from 1923 to 1963. This “Death plus 70 years” is bullshit, and it will only get longer and longer.

In other parts of the world, though, early Disney films have become public domain. The lack of consistent and uniform copyright/intellectual property right laws around the world is one reason for DVD regions and YouTube videos that can be seen in some jurisdictions and not in others.

Chinese companies will ignore both copyrights and trademarks as necessary. In my local mall, there is “Niu Ba Lan” sports shoe shop. I have a “Marina Militare” power reserve wristwatch - it’s obviously a copy of an Officine Panerai.

Image: m2-382-600x600.jpg

In any event, it does keep extraordinarily good time. I know a watchmaker here in town and after I got it, I took it to him to have the movement lubricated and have him generally check it out.

He said it was a very good, 21-jewel automatic movement, that it was well-engineered and was quite obviously a Chinese copy of the Valjoux 7750-P1 movement, and that as far as copies go, it was virtually identical to the original, suffering only from what he called a couple of “components that had minor cosmetic flaws, but nothing that would interfere with the operation of the watch”.

He ordered one for himself, LOL.

I bought a 21-jewel self-winding watch online, made by a Chinese firm, GuanQin, for a fraction of a similar Swiss-branded watch. I had a self-winding (aka automatic) watch ages ago and thought it was time to replace it after 40 years. I’m not even sure where the original one is now. Anyway, I read about GuanQin on a watch fansite, and the reviewer said the movement was just as good as a Swiss movement, because the Swiss watchmakers have their movements assembled in China anyway.

They would do that in the Navy when I was in (called “smokers”). I was entirely uninterested in such things, and the claim “it reduces violence” seems to be one of those “common sense” things everyone knew but no one could demonstrate.

The Navy ended them while I was still in the service. They are now back.

Back in 1905, a smoker was arranged between a black sailor and a Jewish sailor (yes, it was done for racist reasons). At that time, Republican President Theodore Roosevelt was a fan of boxing, so the administration promoted smokers across the Navy.

He also oversaw driving African-Americans out of the Navy (whether he knew about that policy or not). The point of that particular smoker was to prove the superiority of whites (and for the purpose of this, the Jewish sailor was white). He was the one killed.

buzzfeed.com
(with the histories of the two men and the story of the match - there were several different press accounts noted in the article). The Navy’s official telegram to his family was quite the piece of “we’re not tellin’ you nuthin’.”

Interesting. Slavery wasn’t legally abolished in this country until 1866 (Thirteenth Amendment). So if one counts infants born - even if technically - into slavery until the mid-1860s, the number of survivors (“ex-slaves”) will map to the expected distribution of centenarians/super-centenarians in that group. So probably the “last slave” died some time in the mid 1970s.

I used to be naive and just thought “They should emigrate legally.” And while I still wish people would, I know that it’s not that simple and I know it’s definitely not that simple if you’re fleeing what a lot of these people are fleeing in Central America.

A subtle point and extremely important point:

Land based migrants…those presenting themselves at or near let’s say the southern border mostly..compared to someone who would have to fly or use a boat…

While they look the same, a migrant emigre and a migrant refugee are not the same thing.

The antis constantly conflate these two. On purpose

While you might be right in principle, as a matter of practical politics (something Nancy Pelosi is quite good at) it is going to be in her/the Democrats’ best interest to come up a halt to the present government shutdown. In which Republicans have a stake, too, as their plan to shift all the blame to the Dems (as in “Schumer Shutdown”, etc) doesn’t seem to be getting a lot of traction with the public. That may change if the shutdown drags on, especially given the biased nature of the “mainstream” press: so the incentive to come up with some -any - solution to the Wall impasse is fairly pressing.
Unfortunately, I think the center ring for the circus is going to be the Senate, not the House.

She does get in his head for sure. I think what puts her lower on my list though is I haven’t seen much real beef to her on FP. I’m interested in seeing who will be advising her though. I know this may sound silly but when I saw that Samantha Power was advising Obama, I knew he was pretty serious about FP. I had actually first heard of Samantha Power when my then Republican Congresswoman recommended her book on genocide when he spoke to us when I was in high school a few years prior to that. But I like Warren as both a a Senator and person and I think she will bring a lot of good ideas to the discussion. I just want someone else as a nominee but it doesn’t mean she’s incapable of contributing positive ideas.

I like a tree stump better than Trump though. We’re getting into the period where different politicians have to make that decision to try to run for the top office. If she becomes the nominee, I will happily vote for her.

Unlike Trump, I have no doubt she would seek out expert advisors to help her in areas she is not well-versed (such as foreign policy).

People talk about whether a large field is good or bad; the fact is, it’s bad for Democrats because a lot of them will peel off all butthurt when their favorite is eliminated and sit out the election. A large field is irrelevant for Republicans because they’ll fall in line regardless of who’s nominated—witness: tRump.

I really think the orange elephant anus in the room will mitigate some of that. However, I do think that’s a fair concern. I think it will be up to the candidates that lose to rally their supporters around the winner though. I’ll always be proud of gosh it’s going to be two years already starting tomorrow that while Tom Perriello whom I supported for governor over Ralph Northam lost the primary, he rallied his supporters and Governor Northam won by a huge amount and we got tons of Dems elected to the state legislature in 2017 too and of course swept governor, lt governor, and AG.

You have not been paying attention. Dems who lost primaries this fall have become heartfelt supporters of their former opponent.

There are certain archetypes are going to be put on certain candidates. Someone will emerge as an establishment type favorite. Someone as the upstart. Someone as the guy all the kids love. Someone that the right wingers in the media will try to concern troll is “How Dems used to be before they went blah blah.”

Yep. It’s a fair worry but I really think that sort of thing only comes after success. If you look at Al Gore in 2000 and Hillary in 2016, I can really see a lot in common for both candidates. Both were exceptionally qualified for the job they sought, both ran against someone whose intellectual gifts were nowhere near as theirs, both were following two popular two term Democratic Presidents, running in a strong economy, and both had the left insisting they weren’t good enough,

“What the president who campaigned on his ability to cut deals has not done, nine days into a partial government shutdown over his signature campaign issue, is reach out to Democratic congressional leaders to strike one.”

“Virtually alone in the West Wing since the shutdown began, Mr. Trump has instead taken to Twitter to excoriate Democrats, and highlight that he canceled his own vacation to his private club in Florida while lawmakers left the city.”

I thought after Bush beat Gore with the help of the fishy business in Florida and with Nader’s help that the left would be beyond “There’s no difference between X and Y.”

I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m a few degrees from the first World Series. Dad’s Pap-Pap(his mom’s dad) was according to family lore a personal friend of Hall of Famer Honus Wagner and he apparently liked going to baseball games in Pittsburgh where he and Nana’s family lived. I believe I even found an old article identifying him as a semi-pro player in the late 1890’s but I’m not sure if it’s him but I strongly suspect it is since he had a rare name and I haven’t found anyone else in the area with the name that would be close enough in age to be the same guy in my research. Really makes me wish I had known him or at least that my dad and his siblings had known him better but he died when Dad was just an infant and the older siblings didn’t know him that well since my dad’s parents moved around.

Morning!

I saw this story line while checking my ATT Email. Chances are it might have already been covered in one of his tweets…I am not caught up since last nuight.

I guess if the people and the media do not give him the adulation he needs…he’ll give it to himself.

Daily Beast - Trump: I Should Be a ‘National Hero’

In his now-clockwork early-morning tweetstorm, Donald Trump lauded his own surprise-to-the-military actions on removing U.S. troops from Syria, suggesting that he be dubbed a “national hero” for taking on ISIS in his fashion. “If anybody but Donald Trump did what I did in Syria, which was an ISIS loaded mess when I became President, they would be a national hero,” Trump wrote. “ISIS is mostly gone, we’re slowly sending our troops back home to be with their families, while at the same time fighting ISIS remnants.” He added: “I campaigned on getting out of Syria and other places. Now when I start getting out the Fake News Media, or some failed Generals who were unable to do the job before I arrived, like to complain about me & my tactics, which are working. Just doing what I said I was going to do!” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) had announced hours earlier that Trump had agreed to a “pause situation” and would slow down the apparent sudden removal of U.S. troops from Syria. Commanders reportedly emphasized to Trump when he met with troops in Iraq last week that ISIS had not been “completely destroyed” as the president had earlier claimed.

Separately, Trump introduced the concept of a “see-through” wall along the southern U.S. border with Mexico—as opposed to a concrete one. “An all concrete Wall was NEVER ABANDONED, as has been reported by the media,” Trump said. “Some areas will be all concrete but the experts at Border Patrol prefer a Wall that is see through (thereby making it possible to see what is happening on both sides). Makes sense to me!” The federal government’s shutdown over the matter has entered its 10th day.

(A couple Trump Tweets are connected to the article)

Honestly,, I’m a bit uncomfortable with this apolegtic implication of “Happy New Year, but I’m really sorry I can’t say it at the EXACT MOMENT it hits New Year.” What’s wrong with what we did before mobile phones and social media, and just say “Have a great New Year”, or something similar?

Then he will close saying he is not that guy, he loves what the parkland students are doing and he was just trying to make humor out of a bad situation America is going through.

I’ve never been a big fan of his so I have no problem saying he can go fuck himself. I hope he just killed his career. I think his “jokes” were what he really thinks of the students.

And IMO, both of them actually won the presidency.

My wife and I have a standing invitation to travel to Russia with my sister-in-law. (She frequently travels there as she was once a Soviet citizen and has family there.) We have a standing “no thank you.”

There are things which would be interesting to see there (the Kremlin, the Hermitage Museum, &c) but not enough to entice me.

I visited Moscow in 2007, when my son was living there. It was a great vacation and we visited all the tourist spots: the Kremlin, Red Square, GUM (which is now a mall with very exclusive designer shops), Napoleonic Invasion museum, and the Pirate Mall (where you can get any hacked software & new movie release, malware & viruses included free!)

I’ve always liked the Russian nesting dolls. I have one of Russian/Soviet leaders: Putin, Gorby, Khrushchev, Stalin, & Lenin. Got that in Berlin tho near Checkpoint Charlie. Russia is a fascinating place. I too would like to visit one day. I enjoyed Slovakia and Poland. Totally a different experience in large part because I was visiting family too.

I guess the Senate Republicans don’t understand this co-equal part of the government business, unless the President is a Democrat. So the new rule is that if Trump doesn’t approve, they won’t send it to him. Hmmm — does that mean that the kompromat is now so overwhelming that they cannot afford to cross Trump? Or is it that they are so afraid of their base, that they cannot stand up for what’s right? Or is it merely that they are all sociopaths who don’t care about this nation anyway?

When I was younger, most Republicans supported this nation and democracy. Our Republican governors in Illinois certainly did not promote tyranny — but then again, they were limited in power because the legislature is solidly Democratic. Our Republican Senators were not ideologues and would cooperate across the aisle. Politics has changed radically since the Gingrich “revolution” and Citizens United. McConnell is working on destroying this nation and there aren’t any Republicans in the Senate who object to this process at all. If ALEC gets its wish to rewrite the Constitution, there will be no turning back.

Hmm.

Do I sound like I have a low opinion of the human species? Oh hell yes. The only thing that was ever likely to force people to take climate change seriously was continuous sirens—big, bright, loud continuous sirens. Frankly, I’d be pretty happy if a tsunami destroyed the White House, just like in the movies. Or maybe a heat wave killed a hundred thousand people in Paris. With apologies to Washington DC and Paris, this is what it’s going to take to get the panicked level of attention we need: something big, something clearly climate related, and something that kills a lot of white people.

So 2018 was a good year for climate change, and we need more like it: bad enough to get people’s attention before the really bad stuff starts.

So, amazingly, this popped up on YouTube. The Ghoul, starring Peter Cushing and John Hurt - two fine actors who’ve certainly left us with many great performances. From 1975, directed by Freddie Francis.

1975 The Ghoul uncut version Horror Spooky Movie Dave

A bit of trivia regarding this flick: While the film was in production, Peter Cushing went through a great deal of emotional turmoil: before he signed on to do this film, he lost his beloved wife Helen to natural causes, leading him to wish he would die himself and soon. According to his co-star Veronica Carlson, director Freddie Francis made Cushing do multiple takes during the scene where he talks about his love for his late wife; this caused Cushing great distress and reduced the widowed actor and some of the crew to tears.

For those who don’t subscribe to the times, a cliff notes version?

The assailant slipped out of a park around noon one day in October, zeroing in on his target, which was idling at a nearby intersection — a self-driving van operated by Waymo, the driverless-car company spun out of Google.

He carried out his attack with an unidentified sharp object, swiftly slashing one of the tires. The suspect, identified as a white man in his 20s, then melted into the neighborhood on foot.

The slashing was one of nearly two dozen attacks on driverless vehicles over the past two years in Chandler, a city near Phoenix where Waymo started testing its vans in 2017. In ways large and small, the city has had an early look at public misgivings over the rise of artificial intelligence, with city officials hearing complaints about everything from safety to possible job losses.

Some people have pelted Waymo vans with rocks, according to police reports. Others have repeatedly tried to run the vehicles off the road. One woman screamed at one of the vans, telling it to get out of her suburban neighborhood. A man pulled up alongside a Waymo vehicle and threatened the employee riding inside with a piece of PVC pipe.

A Waymo spokes-droid goes on to make some pious statements about not being deterred by criminals, while locals complain that they weren’t consulted about being the site for a beta test.
