As impressive as Luca’s guitar playing is, his ability to navigate around a working shop without bumping into shelves or tools or stumble across power cords whilst playing is
unparalleled.

Great. Tornado watch posted for a large portion of Ohio and Northern Kentucky until 9 PM. I knew as soon as the sun broke through the morning clouds we were going to be in trouble. This area is right in the middle of the heat from the south and the cold blast from the upper Midwest. Not good.

Edit: Watch not warning.

It looked like he was taking that guitar for a test ride around the stable it was born in.

There’s one point where he bends a note almost a full step up WITH HIS PINKY while still fretting a chord with his other fingers, and let me tell you that kind of shit hurts on an acoustic guitar.

I can conceptually understand why. When you’ve gone through a pregnancy, felt a baby kick, watched the fetal heartbeat, then given birth it becomes very real. But all of that implies a specific set of circumstances…the baby was wanted and it was healthy and so was the mother. They forget not everyone lives in a fairy tale kingdom with Cinderella and Belle.

When I was in college (late ’60s) I spent many hours in the library browsing the stacks. One of the scariest books I came across was “Handbook of Midwifery”. It detailed so many things that can go badly wrong physically, even when nothing at all is wrong healthwise with either the mother or the fetus.

In a way, I’m sympathetic to the principle behind opposition to abortion but the pro life political movement doesn’t want to make birth control readily available, they don’t want to help single moms, etc. They just want to slut shame women. So in a way, I do like the idea of safe, legal, and rare but that includes doing things that the anti abortion fanatics dont’ want to do.

I don’t even think everyone opposed to legal abortion is anti women but when there are things like proposed transvaginal ultrasounds and the constant slut shaming, I definitely do think the men and women behind these movements certainly are sexist. And I definitely think someone like Ben Shapiro who loves attacking pro-choice women without an ounce of understanding why women support choice is definitely sexist.

Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel  Apr 14, 2019 • 1:36:52pm

Texas Legislature considers a ‘God doesn’t approve of you’ bill

If this bill becomes law, if you go to see a doctor, or you call a plumber — or if your teacher doesn’t “approve” of your child — all the state license holder has to say is, “God doesn’t want me to provide you with service,” and there would, effectively, be no recourse for you.

SB 17 would bar state license-granting agencies from denying or stripping professional licenses for conduct “based on a sincerely held religious belief” of the applicant or license-holder.

We should all be thankful that SB 17 sponsor Charles Perry, R-Lubbock, approved an amendment to his bill that would exempt first responders from claiming the religious freedom exemption while executing their tax-supported public duties.

Good to know that if my house was burning down, the local fire department would have to extinguish the flames, or if my local bank was being robbed, the police would have to respond even though it’s in the gayborhood.

Perry and supporters of the bill say they have the right to have their personal interpretations of biblical scripture become law — regardless of who might be harmed and, yes, separation of church and state be damned.

“It’s not about the here and now,” Perry said. “It’s about where we’re all going to spend our eternity.”

I don’t recall Jesus being overtly mean and hateful, that’s MY interpretation of Scripture, so I think I’d be within the law to deny service to assholes like the idiot proposing this mess. Of course, we know this law will be selectively enforced, as the first time a Muslim exercises his religious convictions he’ll be before a judge being torn a new asshole for thinking his religion gives him any sort of special privilege.

I don’t recall Jesus being overtly mean and hateful, that’s MY interpretation of Scripture, so I think I’d be within the law to deny service to assholes like the idiot proposing this mess. Matthew 25: 41-46 (NASB)

41 “Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels;
42 for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me nothing to drink;
43 I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.’
44 Then they themselves also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not [a]take care of You?’
45 Then He will answer them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’
46 These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

What we’re seeing is that the Evangelicals, left to their own designs, would have America every bit as theocratic and sectarian as they accuse the Middle East of being. They’d just consider themselves more “civilized” for not immediately stoning an “adulterous” woman to death…until after the show trial where “God” condemned her for her “crimes.”

I attended the funeral of a member of our parish yesterday. Our little church was nice and full between family, friends and parishioners. We had a unit from a local VFW that he’d been a member of to provide military honors. But it was depressing to hear the presentation of the flag to the next of kin with “on behalf of the president” knowing what a coward this president is and the fact that Danny had been a tanker in Vietnam. Well, tankers are cav and Fiddler’s Green will be there for him but not for that POS in the White House; he’s got his reward already.

Totally agree.

Science is “a Democrat thing”: Mantra of the Trump administration revealed

Lobbyist turned Trump appointee reportedly defended canceling coal study by saying science was for Democrat.
Science, according to a Trump appointee at the Department of the Interior, is “a Democrat thing.” Those words were reportedly used to justify the abrupt 2017 cancellation of a study into the health effects of mountaintop removal for coal-mining. At the time, then-Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke claimed that the study was canceled after a careful review of the grant process.

But during a Tuesday congressional hearing on this issue, Rep. Alan Lowenthal, D-Calif., citing the inspector general’s report into the matter, said that a Trump appointee named Landon “Tucker” Davis had offered a likelier explanation for why a study that was more than halfway done was abruptly shut down: In Davis’ words, “Science was a Democrat thing.”

It’s the same mentality as a black Democrat opining upon racism in America or a female Dem about sexism, that she as a member of the group they’ve been conditioned to hate dares to call them out on it.

By contrast, if Ilhan were out there in the press, speaking in favor of Bibi’s racism and calling upon more defense spending to combat “terrorism,” she’d be held up as “one of the ‘good ones,’” much like they love Candence Owens and loved Bill Cosby (before, you know, he became radioactive).

I wonder if anti-choice attitudes among women actually correlates with motherhood per se, or if that’s just a byproduct of age, marital status, and religious affiliation, which themselves do correlate most strongly with conservative views. I also wonder if it gets a lot easier conceptually for older, post-menopausal women to oppose reproductive freedom when it’s no longer their bodies at risk of external control.

Basically my point is that I think the anti-choice movement uses motherhood as a screen for patriarchy, as a way to enforce a reductive, limited idea of what women’s role in society should be by pretending to celebrate it. And that like all forms of conservatism and toxic nostalgia it tends to take root in people who have older, outdated cultural frames of reference and have close contact with patriarchal institutions.

it just now occurred to me that King James had his theological minions put together an “officially Word of God Bible” that was designed to make the peasants believe in the divine right of kings and be so very content with their fate for a wretched life here on earth in exchange for a glorious streets paved in gold and mansions in heaven afterlife.

So I decided to shell out for the new Molekule purifier. Set it up on Wednesday and it spent a good four hours at high speed calibrating itself. I have noticed that when I get up in the morning my nose is less stuffy so I’m counting that as a plus.

I need one.

Now I’ve had the Dyson Cool Air Tower with the filter but Dyson no longer makes the filter for it and third parties now make an inferior filter that isn’t as effective as Dyson’s. I now have to change the replacement filters every 2 months and they are just clogged with dirt.

Molekule uses a new process that has a specially treated filter that breaks down all contaminants including bacteria, mold and viruses when the UV light illuminates the filter. I am noticing cleaner air in my main room when Molekule is running.

Well that was a trip.

The people of Apologia Church, now renting space at a church in Mesa, are a bunch of cultists. They have these “set” patters that they try to use to get a person to agree with them. Basically, if you agree that murder is a crime, then people should be prosecuted for murder and shouldn’t they be executed, and zygotes, embryos and fetuses are full human beings and if you get an abortion, you’re murdering and you should be executed…gah! It bugged them to death that I wouldn’t follow them down their primrose paths and I wouldn’t accept what they said as true.

I ended up shouting at them about how they want the state to execute women who have abortions. Yeah, over and over and over again. I had one guy tell me more black people owned slaves than white people, that indentured servants were treated worse than black slaves and that the Irish were enslaved. (That’d be LIE, possibly true but indentured servitude ends and that whole Irish thing is just *crazy*.) I told him he was a white supremacist. (I said I wasn’t going to mince words.)

At one point I had pretty much the entire church out on the lawn. Several of them were filming me; I had two cameras on my person, filming. One guy kept getting into my face and I pushed my sign into his camera several times. My response was to learn that yes, they do believe God creates some people to be damned from before the foundation of the world, that fertilized ova are created by God and yes, God does allow for half of those ova to fail to implant. My response to that was to tell them I’d rather go to hell than worship their god. I’m dead serious about that. If the god of the Calvinists is in charge, I’d rather that I burn forever in hell than worship that kind of a fiend.

I was told that I was going to hell and that I didn’t worship the right Jesus. Whatever. I think God is far, far, far more merciful and loving than these bastard descendants of John Calvin.

ETA I did get one guy on camera saying that yes, he believes abortion is murder and yes, women should be executed. Seriously, these guys are murderous asshats.

Calvin for Beginners.

They use the Acronym “TULIP” which stands for:

T = The “Total Depravity” of all humankind due to Adam’s fall from grace and total embrace of his sinful nature

U = Unconditional Election whereas The Big G predestined everyone’s life before they were born and nothing can be done to change the course of one’s life that The Big G locked you into

L = Limited Atonement so when JC was put on the cross, he only atoned for the sins of those The Big G predestined to be saved. If You didn’t win the Big G’s Lotto, tough luck.

I = Irresistible Grace means that when The Holy Ghost gives you the Bar-Kays Treatment to get that ass saved it’s a done deal. As for everyone else, well they need to pack the BBQ sauce for the pit roast

P = Perseverance of the Saints You can’t lose your salvation. Because the Big G has elected, the Son has redeemed, and the Holy Spirit has applied salvation, those thus saved are eternally secure. They are eternally secure in Christ. And this is where the Prosperity Gospel comes into play because the Big G prospers those that were predestined to really love him.

I don’t agree with throwing most people out. But, I also don’t believe applying most rules 100% of the time, especially when it’s known quantities like them. It’s not being hypocritical. The GOP and Trump keeps people from going into their rallies. The only reason they allow actual newspeople in is to use them as props.

I think there is a bunch of things going on with pro-forced-birth women. First, there is the just-world fallacy—my daughter is/I am a good girl so I never have to worry about a rape pregnancy, or a wanted pregnancy going south, or a husband that walks out just before the positive pregnancy test. Second, there is the belief that they are more moral than other women, so the rules in place to keep women moral need not apply. Third, there is the jealousy of a woman who didn’t really want children, but was forced by her church and family to have them—how dare someone else have a freedom that was denied to her. And then there are just those that go along because it is expected of them.

The likelihood of a woman becoming more pro-forced-birth with age depends on how accurate her memory is about her pregnancies and whether she has any daughters to worry about. Some women can manage to forget about her discomfort, pain, and very real risk to her life and health. Years later, her pregnancies were all flowers and sunshine and fuzzy kitten purrs.

Chuck is in charge of all of the company’s political reporting. He’s the host because he’s the boss, at least of that part of the news division.

Comcast benefits from Trump. Their NBCU subsidiary has a long working relationship with Trump.

In no way will Chuck ever be an independent voice in regards to Trump.

He’s just like Russert and Gregory. Recites the latest GOP talking points.

What really makes me sad is when I remember when Lawrence Spivak and Bill Munro hosted Meet The Press and they never pulled any punches. Neither one of them would ever toss a softball to anyone. But when Republicans are on Press The Meat Chuck U tosses them softball after softball and then the gotchas come out when any Democrat appears.

I read the series but I do think there’s something creepy/nihilistic about the author.

My pet theory about A Song of Ice and Fire is that the White Walkers win in the end, and all the readers cheer at this improvement from the sordid affairs of human rulers.

I’ve never quite understood how one can create a theology that tells the majority of followers that they’re damned no matter what they do. Seems to take away the incentive to be good people if the Big Guy has already decided while you were in the womb that you lost the Powerheaven drawing.

Then again, I was associated with the Friends for a long time, and they rejected Calvinism not long after it was first proposed.

It reads like Catholics were the big group that jumped out of religion, but I blame evangelicals for this change. Christianity is going to be judged by those in it, and the loud ones have been crap for the last couple of decades.

And that’s why they’re trying so hard to get those theocratic laws installed.

I might be reading this wrong but it looks to me as if the increase in “No religion” correlates much stronger with a decline in “Mainline (Protestantism)”.

Makes sense to me; I mean, that’s kind of where, historically, you’d have put yourself if you didn’t really believe anything but wasn’t about to make a fuss about it either.
More convenient to be able to tell the parents and grandparents the same thing you were still sort of paying lip-service to yourself, really. I’d imagine that used to be a pretty big factor in the US even more than elsewhere, up until fairly recently anyway.

Mainline churches started to decline in the 70s and the trend really accelerated when the Religious Right came to power under Reagan. In the area of Los Angeles I live in a lot of the mainline churches closed and a chunk of them were taken over by the Religious Right. Others just sit vacant or they were torn down.

Just a reminder: “nones” are not the same as “atheists”.

“Nones” are just those who didn’t want to select one of the religious labels offered.

The same GSS report shows that self-reporting atheists are only around 5% of the population, which means most of the “nones” are not atheists.

I’ve long suspected that the “nones” are mostly a counter-culture movement.

The decline in so-called mainstream Protestants is because they are dying off and not making new converts. If one is going to be a new “Christian” these days, such a person is likely to be evangelical or Catholic or some splinter group.

I know back in the 50s my home town had a tiny Montgomery Ward and Spiegel storefront that simply handled catalog orders.

My hometown had a MonkeyWards down on central avenue that sold mostly auto stuff like tires, but also had a storefront for catalog orders, and the typical house appliances.

Sears had a similar storefront.

The big clothes stores in town were JCPenny’s and SS Kresge’s.

Nonsense. Neither AOC or Omar are “troublemakers”. They represent their districts. Pelosi’s remarks are simply putting the interviewer’s question in perspective, a pushback against the DEMS IN DISARRAY nonsense.

I remember always liking the Monkey Wards christmas catalog better than the Sears one. Even the school cloths, though hardly hip, were not as horrifically bad as the stuff from Sears.

But Penny’s was a third string & far back. If it wasn’t in the catalogs, we usually looked to K-mart and the blue light specials. They also had the best lunch counter in town, as far as I was concerned (good pie :D )
