In Which Donald Trump Hijacks Independence Day and Turns It Into a Militaristic Campaign Event

Politics • Views: 24,671

I think I’ve made my opinion known about Donald Trump’s grotesque jingoistic ego-gratifying July 4th “Salute to America.”

And here’s a good piece by Greg Sargent, arguing that Trump’s hijacking of the Fourth of July just got a lot uglier.

As many critics have pointed out, by politicizing the Fourth of July so nakedly, Trump has inevitably transformed the celebration into a campaign event. It remains to be seen whether he will do so explicitly in his speech, but either way, that conversion has already been implicitly accomplished.

It’s the melding of that fact with the particular display Trump is putting on that makes this so ugly. The showcasing of military might, Trump’s association of himself with it, and the unabashed conversion of a paean to the nation’s founding into a reelection event — what it all amounts to is larger than the sum of its parts.

Tasteless overkill and cluelessness.

He really did get a boner watching Macron’s and Putin’s parades and demanded his own.

I am glad that the Military put its foot down.

He’s only becoming more and more emboldened in his bullshitting. His experience as President is telling him that not only are there no consequences to telling total fabrications, but also at least 40% of America will believe HIS WORDS over the evidence of their own eyes and experience.

Everything Trump touches dies. #ETTD

Trump is clueless about the economy, economics, and world trade. He thinks manipulating the dollar will somehow help the US? It will only make the current trade war worse, since that’s what it does. It’s likely to hike costs to consumers here, and it will slow the economy further. It will have the opposite effect from what Trump envisions.

This is due to having reactionary know nothing advisers surrounding him telling Trump what he wants to hear, instead of what he needs to hear.

The bigger problem is that even if these advisers did in fact tell Trump what he needs to hear, he’d simply disregard them, no matter how strongly they presented their case.

Because it’s not what Trump wants to hear and if he doesn’t want to hear it, there’s nothing they can do.

One big reason - outrage fatigue. Mrs. FBW, who started watching the news religiously after Trump was elected, has now stopped watching it entirely. I think initially it made her feel like she wasn’t alone in her anger and dismay, that there were tens of millions who felt the same.

Now, 2 1/2 years later, it just makes her anxious without any feeling of power.

Meanwhile, Trump just keeps going. Remember about 6 months back, when we felt we’d scored a victory because Kirsten Nielsen resigned and DHS was going to end the child separation policy?

So, how do things look now? They look worse, don’t they. Trump runs into resistance and makes a feint at retreat, then just keeps going. Weak people who compromised their humanity resign and are replaced with genuinely horrible people.

And everyone trying to resist this gets worn out.

We do that at our own peril. It is on the census, because 3 hours ago he literally said “John Roberts has made his decision; now let him enforce it”, and SCOTUS no more has a police force to seize the illegal forms next March than it had an army to guard the edges of Cherokee and Chickasaw territory in 1830.

This is literally a high crime that should be enough by itself to get him convicted, but the Rs in the senate will still merely circle the elephants.

I’m not seeing this in the American media, but the story is now in the Czech media.

This is via Google Translate: in spoiler tag, as it’s rather long.

Russian bathyscaphe, on whose deck 14 people died on Tuesday, was said by the Russian media to have been designed to cut submarine Internet cables. The submarine is now based at Severomorska in the Murmansk region of northwest Russia. The Kremlin said earlier on Wednesday that some of the information, including the functions of the bathyscaphe, are a state secret.

President Vladimir Putin canceled an event due to the disaster and met Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu instead. According to TASS, he ordered him to fly to Severomorska and arrange for a thorough investigation of the causes of the fire on the spot, as well as the provision of survivors’ assistance. “When I return, personally report to me,” Putin ordered. The President’s spokesman on Wednesday said some information about the accident is a state secret.

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, who had arrived in Severomorska to investigate the incident, was not much more common on Wednesday. He said that the fire broke out on the scientific-research deep-sea apparatus of the Russian naval fleet in planned research in the Russian territorial waters of the Barents Sea. “14 crew members died. The others were saved, “he said, without specifying the number of rescuers.

E-mails and billions of dollars go through submarine cables
According to him, the people on board were “unique military specialists - highly qualified professionals who did important research on the Earth’s hydrosphere.”

The Russian press also came up with information about the alleged submarine function. According to RBK and Novaja Gazeta, it was supposed to be an AS-12 vessel equipped with a nuclear propulsion unit designed to cut undersea cables. They keep the Internet running around the world. However, both Russian media outlets cite anonymous sources.

The AS-12 submarine first appeared in 2003, but its particular equipment was and still is largely subject to rumors. The Russian government has been doing great secrets around her, she writes, among other things, the Business Insider server , referring to Radio Free Europe. For example, in 2012, the submarine participated in a survey aimed at confirming Russia’s demands for expanding the borders of its Arctic continental shelf. According to official statements at that time, she collected samples from a depth of 2500 meters. Normal submarines can only dive to 600 meters.

American and other Western experts have warned for a long time that the Russians are moving around fiber-optic cables through which millions of emails, text messages and other trillions of dollars from international transactions go through daily.

Of course, the GOP fanatics were frothing at the mouth over Obama. So I suppose that it is remotely possible that somehow we will get through even a second term of Trump. After all, he hasn’t started a war and isn’t bombing Cambodia.

The design of these things, as we know of it, is to have several bathyspheres connected together and then covered with a more conventional submarine shell that’s unpressurized. It can descend to multiple thousands of meters. Two of its possible missions would be intercepting communications on undersea cables or destroying them. There’s some satellite communications backup for these cables, but it’s expensive and would be only for high priority communications. Cutting the cables would cripple internet communications.

There was some talk about this vessel (the Losharik) trying to retrieve a nuclear powered submarine drone. I don’t know if this is the case.

Whatever they were doing, fire on a submarine is a submariner’s worst nightmare and it would have been a horrible way to go.

“…When it was almost time to leave, Sevier asked to see a 3-year-old girl, and then two other children. But by that point, the friendly and accommodating Border Patrol agent assisting her earlier in the day had been replaced by a dour guard, wearing a surgical mask, who claimed that he couldn’t find the toddler. “We can wait,” Sevier said, as she recalled to me in an interview. Her tone was polite but firm; she knew that she had the right under a federal court settlement to examine whomever she liked.

“She’s having a bath,” Sevier recalled the guard as saying, a luxury one official told her is available only to babies removed from their guardians. In the facility’s standard cages, there is no soap or showering for the kids. Though 72 hours is the longest a minor can be legally confined in such a facility, some had been there almost a month. Sevier waited.

Finally, the guard returned with news. He had found the girls after all. “We located the bodies,” he said, in paramilitary slang. “I’ll bring them right in.”

Got to make sure we’re dehumanizing the dangerous 3 year olds with paramilitary slang.

That really is the question I want to pose to the Dem leadership: “Then what?” We’re supposed to be thrilled about Robert Mueller testifying before Congress months after it would have made a major splash in the pond, but then what? We’ve got all these court cases against Trump over testimony, over documents, and over WH secrecy. But supposing we won them all tomorrow, then what?

There really doesn’t seem to be anything on the other side of the equation.

Mother Jones obtained a photo of a card that is being distributed to participating service members with instructions from the Pentagon about what to say—and not to say—when speaking with members of the media. The Department of Defense would like service members to be clear that they are “proud” on several levels. Under the overall messages, the guide suggests: “I am proud of my job and my vehicle/tank. I am glad to share my experience with American People.” It also proposes that they say: “I am proud to honor the Nation and the Armed Forces during this Independence Day Celebration.”

That’s followed by “Dos” and “Don’ts,”—do “smile and have fun,” don’t guess, lie*, or speculate.” And the card closes with general tips for talking to a reporter. “Relax and speak to America,” it recommends.

as i posted downstairs this AM re as to the tax return lawsuit and drama (edited down)
- the Supreme Court orders Mnuchin to turn over Trump’s tax returns
- Trump may order him to refuse.
- This would probably trigger the House to impeach Mnuchin.
- Trump may order all the senators not up in 2020 and those up but not vulnerable to vote for acquittal
- At that point, what could Neal do?

- there’s only so much power and it takes time to line up the ducks
- and as we’re seeing there are inherent weaknesses in the system when one side ignores the norms and conventions and starts pushing the limits further than anyone ever figured
- and even if the other side (dems) did that to, what exactly can they do?

COLUMBUS - A federal judge has temporarily blocked Ohio’s ban on abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected.

U.S. District Judge Michael Barrett in Cincinnati granted a preliminary injunction against Senate Bill 23 on Wednesday. In a 12-page order, Barrett, who was nominated by President George W. Bush, concluded Ohio abortion clinics challenging the law were likely to prevail.

“This court concludes that SB 23 places an ‘undue burden’ on a woman’s right to choose a pre-viability abortion, and … plaintiffs are certain to succeed on the merits of their claim,” Barrett wrote.

The law, passed by Ohio’s GOP-controlled Legislature and signed by Republican Gov. Mike DeWine, would have penalized doctors who performed abortions after a fetal heartbeat was detected - as early as six weeks gestation with a transvaginal ultrasound.

Barrett noted that six weeks gestation is just two weeks after a woman’s missed menstrual period, and attorneys for the state did not provide testimony that viability exists at that stage.

“A woman with irregular periods likely will be denied the opportunity to seek an abortion altogether because she will not realize that she is pregnant in time to choose her fate,” Barrett wrote.

I’m not sure if I said it here, but this is the reason I don’t ever expect Trump to be impeached, and why I believe the leadership is dragging their feet every step of the way. The closer we get to the primaries, the convention, and then the election itself, the easier it is to complain about how there’s “No time” to do anything other than pray that we win next November. And that Mueller’s testimony is not a vital part of building a case, but is just another exhibit in a meandering sideshow of a “fight” that will never go anywhere.

That really assumes that Donny views sick and dying refugees as a problem. From all indications, he sees that as beneficial to his plan to scare future refugees into “turning back.” That if they get here, all that will happen is they’ll be put in cages and left to rot (perhaps literally).

I think we all know that answer to “What next?” Donny’s going to go out there tomorrow to act like a third-world dictator, then return home to televised fellatio courtesy of Faux, who will act as if this was the greatest presidential speech since Washington gave his inaugural address. And that will spur him to look for ways to not only politicize other national holidays, but to increase the size and scope of next year’s July 4th campaign rally because the public spectacle appeals to a reality TV “star.”

Seeing speculation now that tomorrow is likely to be a shitshow because it’ll turn into Inauguration 2.0, that the WH so badly botched the organization and preparation that most of those they wanted to show up already have other plans. That they’re struggling to get the “VIP” seats filled because most of the donors and Republicans they wanted to show up…already have other plans. And that D.C. is already so massively lop-sided against Donny, that the odds are his few “supporters” will be crowded out by the protestors who are moving Heaven and Earth to show up.

Ever since God — or someone; who knows? — called Mike Pence home when he was supposed to be flying to New Hampshire to give a talk on opioids yesterday, speculation has run rampant about what really happened.

And, yes, I know that lede has a double meaning — making it sound like Pence was scheduled to give a talk “about opioids” and also give a talk “while on opioids.” But both can be true, right? Honestly, though, why would Pence give an opioid talk. It’s way too ironic, even for this administration. The dude is opioids, FFS.

But that’s not the point of this diary.

Donald Trump is dead … I heard.

I’m hearing.

People are saying.

Many, many people.

So here’s what happened: Tomorrow’s big reveal was supposed to be that the federal government was commandeering the annual July 4 Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest and moving it to the National Mall as a fitting warmup for Trump’s Super Blowout Independence Day celebration. Because this is America, goddamn it.

And Trump was going to be the headliner. But while practicing yesterday, he choked to death on a footlong.

That’s what I’m hearing, anyway.

I’ve little doubt they made this choice not because it was absolutely horrid to ever think such a thing was right and moral…but because they got caught and couldn’t handle the negative press.

There was going to be a shitstorm whenever it happened. They were probably wanting to get it further in the legal process before the shitstorm hit so that it would be harder to dislodge from the legal process.

Honestly, it would not surprise me that Trump turned on Faux yesterday, saw himself getting the third degree from them for not “fighting” the census issue, and called Bill Barr with orders to make the citizenship question happen or else he’d “lose confidence” in Barr. And so we see the DOJ in full Chinese Fire Drill mode, trying to find some way to get this question back before SCOTUS in the hopes that they can then twist Roberts’ arm into approving the inclusion of the question.

The other thing in the transcript is the plaintiff’s counsel brought up the fact that the Gov’t had insisted they needed an answer before 30June to print the questionnaires, and if the Gov’t is now saying that they could still print the questionnaires even if it took another week or so, then the Gov’t misrepresented the facts - which I suspect would not go over well with the judge.

For that matter, several observers say that even if the government came right out and SAID the primary and secondary purposes would be to have a chilling effect on PoC census compliance and to shift reapportionment’s benefits to the South and the White Midwest, SCOTUS would rule in their favour.

Literally, these folks say, the only thing saving the Republic for a couple more weeks was that Trump ordered DoJ to dissemble about the purpose. Because SCOTUS is fine with establishing a white-supremacist society, but it gets FURIOUS when you lie to it.

The situation was put in the framework of Facebook’s lawyers saying one thing and then Zuckerberg himself making a public statement saying another, at which point she’d drag the lawyers in to say that she doesn’t seem to think they’re speaking for their client anymore. But the implication is pretty clear: She doesn’t think the DOJ is telling her the truth because they say one thing and then Donny says something totally at odds with what they’re telling her.

To be fair, he didn’t specifically say they weren’t speaking for their client.

I’ve been told different things, and it’s becoming increasingly frustrating.

If you were Facebook and an attorney for Facebook told me one thing, and then I read a press release from Mark Zuckerberg telling me something else, I would be demanding that Mark Zuckerberg appear in court with you the next time because I would be saying I don’t think you speak for your client anymore.

The judge seems to be trying to be fair to the DOJ by not just going with the plaintiffs motion to order a stipulation that DOJ will not further pursue the matter about the question and will publicly counter any statements put out in public that they are continuing to do so. The response was to comment on how that made the court uncomfortable, effectively putting a clamp on Donny’s tweets until the whole matter is settled. BUT the court also can’t have him shooting off his mouth how they’re going to continue to pursue the matter, laying out to the DOJ that it appears they’re not speaking for their “client” anymore. So they have until Friday afternoon to either get their shit together…or the court will consider ordering the stipulation be imposed.

re: #240 Blind Frog Belly White

So either Trump shuts up, or the DOJ has to openly declare they’re ignoring him.

More like the court’s ordering the DOJ to decide how it wants to handle this going forward. As of yesterday, they were signaling compliance with the injunctions and printing census questionnaires without the citizenship bit. But then their “client” blurts out that he doesn’t intend to comply with the injunctions and now the DOJ is basically they’re under orders from their “client” to push this case before the SCOTUS bench again. That after months of insisting the matter how to be resolved before a June 30th deadline, they’re now acting as if they’ve all the time in the world but also asking the court to tell them how they can fast track this whole matter back to the SCOTUS.

So the court is wanting to know if the DOJ is planning to comply with the injunctions or not. And if they’re not, then the court may be forced to take steps it’s avoided before now because it believed that the DOJ was acting in good faith.

Once again: TRUMP’S STANDING ORDERS LIKELY ARE “OPEN FIRE IF ANYONE APPROACHES THE VIP AREA WITHOUT AUTHORISATION”. It might be worth it in the long run, but anyone planning to try it has to understand going in that they’re undertaking a suicide mission, not just setting up to be arrested. Likely the same with bathing in the reflecting pool.

Trump is such a miserable bastard.

He could never have reached this point if not for the complicity of the entire GOP. Trump is evil but so are his enablers. Of course, after Hitler took complete control, the enablers were forgotten and he became the face of evil. I assume that will be eventually true about Trump — he will loom large and the GOP enablers will be forgotten so that they can return and inflict damage in the future, assuming that we ever gain a Trump family - free future.

I retract my statement of yesterday:

Re: The citizenship question. Trump did what he always does: make some absurd or criminal statement and then back down when it turns out that it is indeed illegal and the rest of the government won’t support him on it. That’s why I don’t share all these fears that he’s going to stay in the WH if he loses in 2020.

The DOIJ (Department of Injustice) is backing Trump and it is clear that Trump is on his way to becoming President-for-Life, with the collusion of the entire GOP.

Gonna say it again.

McCarthy hearings. No one did anything until a tipping point.
Civil Rights. No one did anything about the dogs and fire hoses and murders until a tipping point.
Vietnam War. No one did anything about the lies and murder until a tipping point.
Reagan. Nonstop lies and thievery and tolerated by the media.
Bush II. Evil Cheney, Patriot Act, illegal aggression, thievery.

I remember the Republicans “rallies for decency”. I remember how they controlled the media, how the long-hairs should be shot (and were, at Kent State and Jackson State???), how the police rioted in Chicago and Madison and hundreds of other places; how the National Guard was deployed to American cities. The assassinations. The lies of Reagan, Bush I, Bush II and the evil Cheney.

This is fucking America, folks. Always has been, always will be. Always will be a fight between those who hate the other and fight progress, and those who seek a better life for everyone.

I’m not saying to be complacent. But this isn’t any darker for me than every other Republican administration since the 1950’s. And a bunch of you voted Republican in the past. Think about that for a minute. It ain’t over. And I am not an optimist. But these things are always at the worst right before the tipping point. I’m sticking with my forecast of recession this Fall, and then the tipping point.

“and accordingly all experience has shown, that mankind is more disposed to suffer when evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long chain of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evince a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right…..to overthrow such government and provide new forms for their future security” from memory forgive any mistakes

NOAA’s weather forecast for the DC area tomorrow.

Things definitely looking more active on Thursday. Shortwave
trough approaching from the west will start to have a
significant influence on the weather, enhancing lift. Otherwise,
conditions will not change, so we`ll have the trough interacting
with a highly unstable and very moist environment - a recipe for
plenty of showers and thunderstorms. Have maintained likely POPs
for afternoon/evening, and while it won`t be a constant
downpour, the intervals of showers and t-storms will likely put
a damper on outdoor activities and may result in some event
cancellations or postponements. Any storms may also produce
gusty winds and torrential rain, so a few severe thunderstorm
and flood warnings would appear likely. Temperatures lower 90s
and heat indices near 100, but this is likely slightly below
today`s readings.

YAY!

Why am I just finding out just now that Randy Quaid is a MAGA cultist who does dramatic readings of Dear Leader’s tweets on Twitter? I really wish I didn’t just find that out.

Has Ms. Broussard seen ANY sci-fi movie or TV series? Parallel universes are always a BAD IDEA. You either get the evil version of yourself, or learn you ARE the evil version of yourself.

Do you think they’d let us? I mean, we have Donald J. Trump as our President. I wouldn’t let us live there.

Seen on the local broadcast news last night. Not presented as a climate change story, but…

Pearland woman finds horde of invasive worms known to carry dangerous parasite in backyard

…the creepy creatures are known as the New Guinea Flatworm. Only found in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico, the dark-brown worm is a predator of snails…

Aside from their unsettling appearance, the worms are known to pose a threat to animals and humans by carrying the parasite Angiostrongylus cantonensi, otherwise known as rat lungworm, according to the TISI.

Angiostrongylus cantonensis causes eosinophilic meningitis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Infected people often present symptoms of bacterial meningitis, such as nausea, vomiting, neck stiffness, and headaches.

The CDC states anyone infected with the parasite usually can be healed without specific treatment because the parasite cannot survive for long in the human body. In rare cases, serious complications can occur, leading to neurologic dysfunction or death, according to the CDC.

Trump’s D-Day speech in Europe this year was totally appropriate. He may very well surprise us, repeat that performance and not go off script. Regardless of his performance, I just want him and his entire despicable administration gone forever.
