Great Segment From Rachel Maddow: White House Struggles to Clean Up After Trump’s Incoherent Spectacle at G7

Politics • Views: 46,977

YouTube

Seeing all of Trump’s G7 insanity laid out like this is really something. He’s just laying waste to the reputation of the US and the office of the presidency.

Rachel Maddow reviews a string of a string of instances from the G7 summit in which Donald Trump said something false, or self-contradictory, or simply absurd, making himself a global laughing stock, compromising the credibility of the United States on the world stage, and leaving the White House scrambling to offer corrections and clarifications.

Point 1: The prospective student would _already_ have been vetted, much more formally and including social media, by the State Dept to get his visa in the first place. This was an ad-hoc decision by a petty functionary

and one who knew that current policy would support his petty decision

as I understand, these “anti-American posts” were not even the student’s own, but just appeared on his timeline.

The American press and the general American political climate has adapted to start to see Trump as sine sort of normal, but when he gets overseas, his level of insanity really stands out.

It’s just exhaustion here at this point, really. I’ve had to really step back from watching news and reading blogs on the internet, because it has been affecting my health & sanity.

I say this as a former wire editor for a daily newspaper, who cut his teeth having to read & track about 1,000 stories a day, and pick out the ones that should make the limited news hole.

I. Just. Can’t.

Trump’s disapproval hits 54% at 538, highest in awhile; he’s now 12.5 pts underwater. As long as most of the people who bolted the Democrats for Stein or Johnson come home, Trump can’t win legally. The funny thing is if he could quit tweeting and talking and knock off the disastrous trade war Trump could probably coast to reelection on the economy. But if Trump could control himself, he would’ve already done it. projects.fivethirtyeight.com

Today’s modern right wing world leadership is increasingly relying on economic magical thinking, crass greed over altruism, concentration camps and dead immigrants, and nuclear bombs to solve that hurricane problem.

I’m not for certain we can live through this era of Early 2000’s Era of Fascism.

when people write “let’s make this a meme” or “help this go viral” misses an important aspect of how these ideas work

you cant will, want, or direct this stuff to happen.

to be authentic and to have staying power, they have to be organic (as it were)

they evolve naturally. not because you think you’re clever and you want it to, and by gosh it just should be popular!

two very good recent examples:

this bret stephens thing
‘moscow mitch’

(anyone seriously hear ‘leningrad lindsay’ any more?)

“The law includes exceptions for medical emergencies, but not for rape or incest. If courts don’t uphold the eight-week ban, the measure includes a series of less-restrictive bans ranging from 14 weeks up to 20 weeks.”

Steve Doocy dismisses criticism that Trump is violating the emoluments clause: “I’m sure the president has asked the lawyers, ‘hey, how can I donate this, how can we possibly work around it?’”

whether he has or not, he never seems to donate anything he promises to

so he donated zero

Log Cabin executive director resigns over Trump endorsement

The executive director of the Log Cabin Republicans has resigned following a controversial decision by the organization’s board to endorse President Trump, the Washington Blade has learned exclusively.
….
The resignation follows intense criticism of Log Cabin, which announced its support for Trump earlier this month without its members having met with him or having received any explicit commitments in exchange.

Sources said Henry’s discontent with Trump and dissatisfaction with Log Cabin’s approach to defending its Trump endorsement in the media were key among her reasons for stepping down.

Henry’s name was not signed to the op-ed in the Washington Post endorsing Trump, which was signed by Log Cabin board chair Robert Kabel and vice chair Jill Homan. The op-ed was largely based on the Trump administration’s stated global initiative to decriminalize homosexuality and an HIV/AIDS plan — both of which have yet to yield any results.

Sources say disagreements about the direction of Log Cabin — with some wanting to pursue pro-LGBT policy goals, while others wanted to support Trump — led to a decision to prohibit Henry from speaking publicly for the group.

ICYMI: The August issue of National Geographic has this really great article:
The first Europeans weren’t who you might think

Those master race white Europeans are in for a huge wakeup call.

It also explains why some (perhaps many/most) of us “white Europeans” aren’t so pure white after all when we get out 23&Me/Ancestry results.

The idea that there were once “pure” populations of ancestral Europeans, there since the days of woolly mammoths, has inspired ideologues since well before the Nazis. It has long nourished white racism, and in recent years it has stoked fears about the impact of immigrants: fears that have threatened to rip apart the European Union and roiled politics in the United States.

Now scientists are delivering new answers to the question of who Europeans really are and where they came from. Their findings suggest that the continent has been a melting pot since the Ice Age. Europeans living today, in whatever country, are a varying mix of ancient bloodlines hailing from Africa, the Middle East, and the Russian steppe.

SPOILER: “pure Europeans” would be Neanderthals and they couldn’t hold off the “invaders” from Africa, the Middle East, and Russia/Siberia.

The 2nd Circuit hasn’t ruled yet on whether House Dems can enforce the subpoena for whatever tax returns and other responsive records Deutsche Bank has — after hearing arguments, the court had asked the banks if they had docs, and they filed responses

i wonder

“The bank, in its filing Tuesday, argued that there are ‘statutory, contractual, and privacy concerns’ that have made it reluctant to name whose tax returns it has that would fall under the spring 2019 House subpoena.”

can you write a contract that precludes a subpoena from the US House of Representatives?
im thinking not
and so what they’re concerned about is the backlash after - ie the civil suits from the individuals, if they comply

SPOILER: “pure Europeans” would be Neanderthals and they couldn’t hold off the “invaders” from Africa, the Middle East, and Russia/Siberia.

Invention of the paved road and the sail ended “pure” anything. Humans always screwed anyone they meet.

Populism in Trumpian America sneaks into everywhere:

NASA Administrator Says Pluto Is Still a Planet, And Things Are Getting Heated

[…]

But not everyone agreed with the International Astronomical Union’s ruling - and now NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine has added his voice to the chorus declaring support for Pluto’s membership in the Solar System Planet Club.

“Just so you know, in my view, Pluto is a planet,” he said during a tour of the Aerospace Engineering Sciences Building at the University of Colorado Boulder.

“You can write that the NASA Administrator declared Pluto a planet once again. I’m sticking by that, it’s the way I learnt it, and I’m committed to it.”

[…]

Sure, there are scientists who would still like Pluto to be officially designated a “planet”, but the argument is never, ever based on “it’s the way I learnt it”.

Everything, and I mean everything, that Trump has touched will need to be fixed when he is out of office.

Debates have NOTHING to do with policy. NOTHING. It will be Trump ignoring all the questions and attacking the Dem. The Dem then wastes their time trying to defend themself. Meanwhile, the “moderators” say and do nothing. Repeat for 90 minutes.

Don’t give him the airtime he wants. Just don’t do it.

This might be interesting for other reasons as well. I have a coworker who likes to talk science in the same way he likes to talk football (I’ve even mentioned that he’s being an armchair scientist). But he had been hung up on dark matter, specifically how, according to him, it makes it hard to accept scientists since so many of them just accept dark matter. After a lot of talks with me and a number of videos, he’s gotten to where he understands more of how the current emphasis on dark matter really works in the scientific community.

But I digress. This clock could be interesting for reasons of computing dark matter. Far enough out, we might detect a change in the course that cannot be explained by general relativity by itself. It would either be explained by general relativity + dark matter, or we might get the kind of information we need to determine if dark matter doesn’t properly describe it.

Impeachment is a process. You go through the process whether or not the outcome is perceived to be in one’s favor. This is not a court of law.

re: #289 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

I still believe the problem with impeaching Trump, and the Senate convicts (a long shot), all that will happen is Pence will make a blanket pardon.

Then Pence will run on being called by Je$u$ to heal the nation and that the Satan-serving Democrats have to be defeated, and tens of millions of old religious folk will say amen and then we get 4 more years of disaster, just with fewer tweets.

The second part won’t work. He’s not going to win a lot of people who hate Trump, and conviction will make a lot of voters angry at Republicans.

No, if 20 Senate Republicans voted to remove Trump from office to be replaced by Pence, the deplorables will be incensed that Pence plotted a coup against Dear Leader and He’d lose in a landslide.

Nope, it’s the court of public opinion. Which can be much worse.

But people will vote for Pence who might otherwise just not vote for anyone if Trump is the candidate.

re: #290 BigPapa

Yes, but I think we are at a point where what matters is strategy, a strategy that has to take down not just Trump but the Republican Senate. The latter is exactly why Trump is not held accountable for anything, and why so much badness has happened. The GOP as a whole is now complicit in destroying what it means to have good governance.

Which is why I doubt the Senate as it is now constituted will convict.

We’re at the point where the majority of GOP leaders have decided that it is more important for them to abuse their power as much as possible no matter what Trump does (or does not do.)

Correct, this Senate would never convict Trump. Even if the news from Deutsche Bank is confirmed, Trump would deny it and say the documents are forgeries.

298
BigPapa  Aug 27, 2019 • 7:55:41pm

Even if Trump is impeached and not removed that isn’t a failure. It’s a ‘choose your side’ for the next election. Triangulating if impeachment would actually result in removal isn’t the point.

I agree that it is important to get the truth out and an investigative process has to be public.

But Trumpers want to believe Trump is a martyr. Trump probably wants to be shown as the martyr standing strong against the evil Democrats.

Perhaps you think I have too negative a view of our fellow Americans, but I really do believe that enough of the electorate are full-in on delusions.

Remember, Trump got more votes than any other Republican in history. And Trump is not unpopular among Republicans.

We agree about the mass delusion and pretty much everything else.

What I think we don’t agree on is whether you start an impeachment proceeding against a president with confidence of removing him from office being a primary vector.

I know there’s a perception that a successful impeachment may fail to remove him from office. One can make an assumption that he becomes stronger. I don’t believe that. There’s not a downside to engaging in impeachment proceedings. His sycophants will no doubt trumpet the vanquishing of enemies.

But an impeachment lacking a removal from office by the Senate will not get him more votes. There is no upside for Trump on this.

Nope. The one thing I know is this: Impeachment won’t solve our problems. The only debate on this is whether it will hurt, help, or do nothing. Only voting will fix things. And it’s going to be messy and dangerous in late October when voting starts, up through the day he’s removed.

Edit: To be clear, I am talking only about the House’s part. The Senate won’t do jack.

Removing Racist Grandpa from office won’t fix things. It’s a huge component but there will be so much more work to be done. It merely moves the timeline to success up a bit. A success that still has to be fought for, earned, and a little luck may be needed to be sprinkled on top.

The FEC is mostly an after the fact commission anyway, especially the way the Republicans treat it.

We have one party that basically views Democracy as an impediment to their goals. They currently control one chamber of Congress, the presidency, and the SCOTUS. It’s not going to be easy. We have to get people registered to vote, get Democrats out to vote, and be ready for what is coming.

I fully expect white people to show up threatening minorities at polling locations. And I expect the police to look the other way on some of it (it’ll be more likely the further you are from a big city). It won’t be pretty, but it might actually scare a few of the Republicans who think everything is just fine.

I totally believe we are in a civil war right now. We are trying to decide what country we want to be. We’re just not standing with guns completely pointing at each other yet because the ones in charge are the ones who would like a riot. So we have to organize the way that others have when they aren’t allowed to use force and win by numbers.

The real number that matters is what % the actual vote needs to reach to beat the fuckery

I’m calling at least 5%. With no FEC, could go as high as 10%.

As bad as Racist Grandpa is acting and poll number reaction the next election needs to be a crushing and overwhelming defeat. A close election won’t work.

We do all these various things here: Coat drives, shoe drives, school supply drives. I have a friend who organizes a huge purse and jewelry sale that raises funds to help low income schools around the city.

I have another friend who works with various groups to keep kids fed when school isn’t in session. (Lots of kids get one solid meal at school and that’s it, so when school isn’t in session, they are struggling for ANY meal.)

How is it that we’ve come to fuck you if your poor, starve.

There just isn’t the proper words for how angry and frustrated this makes me every God Damn day. I can’t handle it.
