re: #563 goddamnedfrank

There absolutely is honor in her telling her subjects that she can tell when she’s being flagrantly lied to and disrespected by a fucking buffoon so that he can lead them all over a goddamned cliff.

Yet, what if she did, and then a future PM who is facing major political opposition asked her to intercede on their behalf? She certainly couldn’t refuse, as the precedent had been set for the Crown inserting itself into a political crisis.

In the case of the Council Tax that so many people objected to under Thatcher, she quietly paid it for her entire household staff, sending the message that she did not approve without saying it out loud.

Hard to read her on Brexit, though.

Sure she could. “Brexit was an existential threat, this isn’t.” Or, “Like the US Supreme Court, I’m not bound by precedence.”

What constitutes an “existential threat”? The UK will not cease to exist on Nov 1st if no-deal Brexit becomes a reality.

As for precedent, Liz isn’t immortal. Eventually she will be gone and either Charles or William will take her place. Do you think she wants to set a precedent for their interceding in the actions of the elected gov’t if they feel that a matter is an “existential crisis”?

Nuclear negotiations have been at a standstill since a February summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Vietnam collapsed after the U.S. side rejected North Korean demands for broad sanctions relief in exchange for a partial surrender of its nuclear capabilities.

The North since the breakdown in Hanoi has repeatedly demanded that Washington remove Pompeo from the nuclear negotiations, accusing him of maintaining a hard-line stance on sanctions and distorting Pyongyang’s statements, while avoiding direct criticism of Trump.

Trump and Kim met again at the inter-Korean border in June and agreed to resume working-level talks, but there has been no known meeting between the countries since then. The North in recent weeks conducted a slew of short-range ballistic missile tests in what’s seen as an attempt to increase pressure on Washington and Seoul over the slow nuclear diplomacy.

She’d be inserting herself now by refusing to go along with Boris’ rank bullshit, so I don’t see how that creates some precedent that obligates her to act on behalf of any future PM. The only precedent she’d be setting is “hey, just don’t fucking insult me by flagrantly lying straight to my goddamned face and expect me to go along with it.”

Prorogation has generally been a formality, the PM requesting such and the Crown granting it. And PMs have requested it in the past for less than savory reasons, generally to avoid politically damaging votes or even to avoid votes of no confidence. If Boris had lost a vote of no confidence or there were evidence that he was requesting prorogation for illegal reasons, she might have a reason to deny such. But holding off votes in the Parliament in order to run down the clock, however unsavory it may be to Liz, is not grounds to deny the request.

I really don’t get the appeal, at all, of this formalistic argument around what does and doesn’t constitute “official” grounds when the facts are that:

A.) He straight up fucking lied to her, and
B.) The consequences of that lie are so incredibly dire for the people who are ostensibly her “subjects.”

She’s been on the throne for longer than most of us have been alive, he’s neither the first PM to lie to her or the last. And her “subjects” elected the people who put that buffoon into power. Her “subjects” also either voted for Brexit or declined to vote at all, figuring it would never happen and so showing up to vote was pointless. I can certainly see the appeal in sitting back and watching her “subjects” forced to face the reality of their desires for “sovereignty.”

My point is that leadership isn’t passively, in the name of tradition, allowing yourself to become a tool used to harm the very people you were literally born to lead.

And if you aren’t going to be a leader when it couldn’t count more, then you have no fucking business being a monarch (I mean honestly nobody does, but that’s another argument.)

Getting rid of the monarchy wouldn’t fix much, it would just remove an excuse for when shit like this happens. I mean really, would people give much of a shit about Liz if they hadn’t pinned their hopes for Boris getting his just deserts upon her kneeing him in the bollocks?

You can’t bring a gun into a Mormon facility:

Mormon leaders explicitly ban guns from houses of worship

washingtonpost.com

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has placed an explicit ban on bringing guns to church by adjusting a policy to say firearms are prohibited for anyone except police officers, according to Daniel Woodruff, a spokesman for the church.

///snip
While the new policy on firearms applies to the entire church, a letter about the change was recently sent to local leaders in Texas and shared with members, Woodruff said. The letter was sent because of a change in state law there that will permit the carrying of open and concealed weapons in places of worship unless a person is notified that it is prohibited.
