re: #385 Belafon

I’m curious when North Carolina’s redistricting will occur and what those maps will look like.

re: #390 Anymouse 🌹🎃

They are required to have the redistricting complete by September 18.

The NC House and Senate have started on the project.

North Carolina legislators who are redrawing dozens of General Assembly districts that judges deemed illegal partisan gerrymanders turned Monday to considering district lines generated by a key expert for those who successfully sued over the maps.

The House and Senate redistricting committees met to figure how they would enact new boundaries for the 2020 election by a court-mandated Sept. 18 deadline. Last week, a three-judge panel declared Republican mapmakers violated the state constitution by manipulating districts created in 2017 to help elect a maximum number of GOP candidates and make it nearly impossible for Democrats to win majorities.

Here, all the thunderstorms moved across the Wyoming line into Nebraska, and a bunch of thunderstorms in Colorado have now moved into my area as well.

Bishop barely held NC12 for the GOP.

Reminder that this district has not sent a Democrat to the House since the 60s.

The main thing to take away is that he barely held on to an R + 12 district.

Repub barely pulls off a win in a special election after spending double what the Dem did, in a ruby red district where he should have been able to sit at home and eat donuts for the entire race. And yet this is supposed to be a sign that the Dems need to forego a progressive candidate and adopt a Repub-lite one.

Fucking hell.

I’m not sure how a special election which does not change the makeup of the House at all means bupkis anyway.

No party wins every election. The idea that the Democratic Party needs to change its strategy based on one of 435 seats (particularly when the 2018 election was a blowout for the Democrats) is ludicrous.

I just went out to lower the flags for 9/11.

I got pulled over by a deputy sheriff in the alley next to the park. (He followed me from my house.)

He wanted to know what I was doing, so I told him. He asked if he could help. “Sure.”

He got out of his car and rendered a hand salute as I lowered the flag to half-staff. He then followed me over to the village hall and did the same there.

He then asked about the Gold Star Family plate, which I explained; asked if I’d been in the military (yes), and thanked us both for our service (sigh). I thanked him for helping with the flags.

Moreover, China can bring more woe to bear on any House district which went for Trump. China doesn’t have to worry too much about things like public opinion if imposing retaliatory tariffs or outright refusing to trade in certain sectors of the USA market.

The idea that “China could sink the US Dollar or the US economy by dumping Treasury bills” always seemed unlikely to me. Sure they could, but there are more effective and faster ways to do it (like what they’re doing now).

Unfortunately, the GOP is fine with carving up the USA and selling it off for parts, as long as they get their cut and remain in power.

A Special Request: Pitch In (goes to Juanita Jean’s: The World’s Most Dangerous Beauty Salon)

[whole post]

We are having a special election in Texas for a State House seat vacated by a Republican who thought he might have problems winning again. He was part of Texodus - Republican incumbents dropping like flies.

The special election is Tuesday, November 5th. In Texas, a special election is a free for all - everybody runs and it’s winner take all. If nobody wins with 50% plus one, there will be a run-off between the top two vote getters.

Republicans are running six candidates. Six. In political science terms that’s officially referred to as a crap shoot. The sole Democratic candidate is Eliz Markowitz. Yeah, yeah, it’s hard to believe that Democrats got our act together and fielded only one candidate so that the Democratic vote isn’t split six ways to hell and back.

I know Eliz personally and I am asking you to toss a few dollars her way. She’s smart as the dickens and has all the right bright ideas. She’s hardworking and willing to do her part. She’ll make you proud.

This is a flippable district and will give the winner a leg-up on the 2020 election. Texas redistricting happens every ten years and 2020 is the year. So, we have a real chance in this seat but she needs money now to get the vote out. Send her some damn money.

Then email her with your best wishes and to let her know that you’re not some weirdo in Montana stalking her. Eliz@Eliz4TX.com

The GOP is running six candidates?

Good lord. It some of them don’t drop out before November 5th, I can foresee a situation where they all end up splitting the vote and Markowitz gets an outright win because it’s 50% + 1.

I can’t help but think the GOP is getting increasingly nervous about their prospects in Texas - if they lose Texas, it’s pretty much all over for them as a national party.

On a side note, got around to watching the Season 3 premiere of The Deuce yesterday evening, and it was great. Looks like this is gonna be a great final season for one of the most criminally underappreciated shows on TV.

Jamal Khashoggi ‘murder recording transcript’ is published (goes to the BBC, more at the link):

A Turkish newspaper has published new details of a recording which reportedly captured the final moments of murdered Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

The prominent government critic was killed in Saudi Arabia’s consulate in Istanbul last October.

The pro-government Sabah newspaper says the transcript is from a recording taken inside and later obtained by Turkish intelligence.

It includes information such as the journalist’s alleged last words.

Khashoggi wrote a column for the Washington Post newspaper and was based in the US before his disappearance.

He was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on 2 October 2018 to obtain papers he needed to marry his Turkish fiancée.

Not my favourite place to link (Fox & Friends Facebook page), but they have the article I’m looking for here.

(video, 3:10 with an interview of the film makers now exempt from public accommodation laws because they are Christians)

A so-called religious liberty case was brought in 2017 against a pair of film makers in Minnesota who film events such as weddings. They refused to film a wedding because of Teh Geyh.

Minnesota courts ruled the film makers violated public access and state human rights law.

Enter Christian legal people to carry the case forward on their behalf (Alliance Defending Freedom, a group which argues legal cases to impose theocracy on the nation). A Federal appeals court overturned the Minnesota courts, arguing their I Amendment right to freedom of religion was unfairly restricted by Minnesota human rights laws.

Just looking up the case, churches across the spectrum from moderate so-called mainline Protestants and Catholics to the fundamentalist evangelical churches are all praising the ruling as a victory for religious freedom (over human rights).

I can see the day coming when I won’t be able to go grocery shopping within a hundred miles because I am Teh Geyh adjacent (my sister and everyone here knows that) or because I an atheist.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. It’s 9/11. The day is reminiscent in some respects of that fateful day 18 years ago. Commuting to work with a loved one, looking out at a sunny sky, but instead of twin towers, there’s just a solitary skyscraper there. 1WTC. The Freedom Tower.

But what exactly do people remember about the day? What about it still resonates? What about those who were there and saw it in person, or smelled the indescribable smell that hung over Lower Manhattan for months afterwards?

I have written endlessly about the WTC, Ground Zero, the rebuilding process, and my thoughts about the entirety of the event. I’ve written about it here and at my old blog. I don’t write at my old place anymore, but this is what I wrote on the 15th anniversary.

In the three years since I wrote that, I remember that I rode in with my dad on the fateful morning and that I left him in Hoboken to take my PATH train to the West Village, while he would take PATH to the WTC.

He never got on PATH. He stayed in Hoboken. He watched from there. I wouldn’t know that for more than an hour, as phone lines jammed as everyone in NYC metro was on the phone simultaneously trying to figure out who was where and if you were safe. It was total chaos and unnerving to so many. And then the silence after the towers fell and that the only sounds heard across much of the city was sirens of emergency vehicles flooding towards lower Manhattan as NYPD and FDNY and emergency personnnel from the entire region went to help those who went into the towers to fight the fires and rescue people. 343 firefighters were killed on 9/11. 23 NYPD were killed. 37 PAPD and NJ PD were killed. 8 EMT from other emergency services were killed.

But the toll continues to this day. Hundreds have died since of 9/11 related ailments. In fact, we’re close to the number who have died of 9/11 ailments as those who died on 9/11 itself.

The GOP fought tooth and nail to prevent passage of the Zadroga Act to help those first responders. They fought and delayed passage of its extension. They fought and delayed making it permanent. They had to be shamed into action.

So when you see GOPers like Trump honor first responders, know that it is only about using them as props - the moment the cameras are shut, the GOP don’t care, because they never cared. Had they cared, they’d have done so much more so much sooner.

Construction at the WTC continues to this day. 2WTC is still just a stub and the developers are looking for an anchor tenant. The old Deutsche Bank building site is still in development, but the performing arts center is underway and the transit hub and shopping mall is done.

The museum is there, as is the memorial. I urge those who haven’t visited NYC to see the memorial; I can’t bring myself to go the museum - too many bad memories of the day. I can picture it all.

And yet we have a guy in the WH who thinks only of events like 9/11 about how he lied about having the tallest building in Manhattan or NYC (he didn’t), made up conspiracies about Muslims celebrating, and a host of other nonsense. He even made today’s memorial about him (posting photo of him and Melania in silhouette looking out over Shanksville). It’s not about those who lost loved ones or who were murdered. It’s about how he can promote himself and his brand. Heck, his first tweets this morning were about polling poorly. This is how a sociopath thinks.

This is not what we need.

Fort Worth police say mass shooting prevented by father who reported own son

Police in Fort Worth said Tuesday that a mass shooting was averted after they received a call from a father who reported his own son.

The father said that his 27-year-old son wanted to buy guns and go on a rampage, according to our sister station KXAS.

“He wanted to kill many people. He wanted to do something that was very similar that took place in the Midland-Odessa area and he basically wanted to mimic that,” said Ofc. Buddy Calzada with the Fort Worth Police Department.

According to local police, the man withdrew between $600 and $700 and then went to several shops to by guns. He was denied because he failed background checks.

“The great part is that somebody, which would be the father in this case, was able to reach out to police with valid information and we were able to do something very significant,” Calzada said.

Police say the man has had multiple interactions with law enforcement and was diagnosed with several mental health issues.

He is now at a local clinic receiving treatment.

re: #170 Dr Lizardo

9/11 has become, after the passage of 18 years, something of a theme recently on alt-history discussion boards, usually, “What if 9/11 never happened?” and variants of that theme.

As something of a casual aficionado of alternative history, for me, it’s an interesting point to ponder.

Or…

If Bush v Gore had gone otherwise.

Would Gore have paid attention to Richard Clarke and John O’Neill and taken appropriate action to prevent 9/11? Or would it have happened anyway and it been hung around Democrats’ necks for generations? Would President Gore have done appropriate follow-through in Tora Bora instead of getting sidetracked by Iraq, and caught Bin Laden within a few months? Would Iran’s considerable assistance in our original invasion of Aghanistan provided a basis for improving our relations with them?

The world witnessed the power of American defiance.

I had to read that a couple times to figure out what the fuck Trump meant by that. I still don’t know. I don’t think he knows either. American resilience to be sure, but defiance? We were laid low on 9/11.

Because on 9/11, we got hit by a small group of terrorists who exploited all kinds of failures in security, intel, and killed nearly 3,000 directly and had opportunity to kill thousands more had the towers fallen across lower Manhattan instead of essentially within the WTC site.

After 9/11, we learned that the US would strike out at Iraq and minimized the effort to go after al Qaeda, which carried out the attack, or the Taliban, who harbored the al Qaeda leaders. Trump now invited and disinvited Taliban from Camp David just this past week.

What defiance did the world witness? That Americans would lash out at completely unrelated bad actors? That we’d waste resources and capital on endless war with uncertain results? That we’d engage in nonstop security theater ever since?

It’s been a while, but I believe some of the hijackers had been in the US for over a year before the attack. So it’s likely it still would have happened. We likely don’t go into Iraq, but it is entirely possible that Saddam Hussein dies of natural causes in the ensuing decade (he was 69 when executed) and Iraq devolves into a civil war as his sons fight for control - one which destabilizes the region and possibly sees other powers in the region enter the war (and given our alliances, possibly sees us enter).

Afghanistan remains the real question. Would there have been some sort of Marshall Plan for Afghanistan, or would we be fixated on an exit strategy no matter what?

They are making a mockery of it, but fortunately the court planned for that, and since its decision is entirely based on the state constitution, there is no appeal for the GOP to take. NC will have fairly drawn districts in 2020, even if a master commissioner has to draw them.

Lyrics according to Youtube:

Huh uh Come on honey/huh uh count your money/huh uh what’s so funny? there’s a riot living inside of us

I got paranoia baby/and it’s so hysterical/cracking up under the pressure/looking for a miracle

Huh uh come on honey lying in a bed of blood and money
Huh uh what’s so funny?
We are rivals in the riot inside us

I’m impressed with the presence of none
I’m possessed by the heat of the sun
Hurry up cause I’m making a fuss

I’d be surprised if that were anything other than a movie prop. Transferable M2HB’s are obscenely expensive ($25k & up) and I just don’t imagine even a fool gun nut leaving one out like that. That mount is one designed for .30 cal too so it wouldn’t hold up to .50 cal recoil (why yes, I was in a gun jeep scout platoon once upon a lifetime ago. We had goddamn worn out M-60’s because the M151 jeep couldn’t handle M-2’s. ).

Before Newt there were some decent Republicans in Washington — but now? no way. This is no different from the Brexit debacle and Johnson’s prorogation of Parliament. from this am’s electoral-vote.com:

- Despite the trade war, the trade gap with China is growing

- The trade gap with other major trade partners is also growing

- Business investment was down sharply in Q2

- The New York Fed announced this week that it predicts a 1-in-3 chance of a recession in the next 12 months, its most bearish prediction since 2007 (when, in fact, a recession did happen)

- In August, the U.S. manufacturing sector shrunk for the first time in three years

- Also in August, job growth slowed significantly, with the result that the U.S. is averaging 143,000/month this year compared to 208,000/month last year

- It was just announced that the number of uninsured Americans rose last year, the first time that’s happened since the adoption of the ACA

- The Senate is arguing bitterly about next year’s spending bills, specifically wall money and abortion coverage, and another government shutdown is possible

Kentucky Democrats Should Not Play it Safe Against McConnell Nancy LeTourneau, WaPo

Some criticism of Amy McGrath:

Not long after McGrath announced her candidacy, she said that, if she’d been in the Senate at the time, she probably would have voted to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. After a backlash broke out among Democrats, she changed her mind and said that was a mistake. The whole episode made her look weak, which is deadly in a race against McConnell.

During an interview on MSNBC, McGrath identified herself as a “moderate,” which might not be a bad position to take in Kentucky. But take a look at how she defined the race.

“Kentuckians voted for Trump, they wanted to drain the swamp,” McGrath said. “And Trump said he was going to do that. Trump promised to bring back jobs, he promised to lower drug prices for so many Kentuckians. And that is very important. And who stops them along the way, who stops the president from doing these things? Well, Mitch McConnell.”

That sounds like a calculated strategy to pursue in a state that Trump won by almost 30 points in 2016. But to blame Mitch McConnell for Trump’s failures strains the imagination. The two have consistently worked as a team in efforts that have hurt the working people of Kentucky.

LeTourneau is afraid that McGrath will lose the race by imitating Alison Lundgren Grimes.

Tallest in Lower Manhattan: 70 Pine. Trump’s 40 Wall was shorter.

Saddest part is that they just don’t have a clue what an insurrection would entail much less require of them. One could pull off a VCesque revolution in America if you had 1) a superpower or surrogate providing arms, ammunition and explosives (and ECM to counter the Reaper Drones) and 2) a constant stream of recruits because casualties will be much higher than those fools understand.

More likely anything here would end up like the post WWII communist uprisings in Greece or Malaysia (Communists in Greece had no outside support, in Malaysia they had inadequate support) where all that happens is the rebels end up dead and the government has an excuse to become even more authoritarian.

The current lead Google story about the 9/11 anniversary is about the son of one of the victims using a speech he made at a memorial service to attack IIhan Omar for her “some people did something” comments.

Oh and it’s from the Washington fucking Examiner.

Six people have died from vaping related illnesses so far. SIX.

And that’s enough for the government to plan a ban on E-cigarettes.

Trumpworld proposing a ban on e-cig flavorings?

What does that actually mean? No one knows. It’s not a ban on e-cigs. It’s a ban on flavor compounds, even though there’s some evidence that it might be a form of vitamin E involved, or cannabis compound? Or something yet to be identified.

Of course this is precisely the kind of tact Trump would take. Make some grand statement, but when you dig in, you find it’s vaporware and no one knows anything about the specifics.

Philip Morris is really pushing their Iqos e-cigarette here in the Czech Republic - I’ve seen a few stories about the purported dangers of classic e-liquids/e-cigarettes…..yet strangely (ahem!) I see nothing about the purported dangers of Iqos or Glo e-cigarettes.

Greg Sargent, WaPo: Trump’s war on truth just got a lot more cult-like

Some really strange things as you get down into the article.

The first: Republicans are now accusing the Republican National Committee of concealing internal data about Trump’s unpopularity from down-ballot Republican candidates.

and

… the second new example of this war on information: Trump is now using data provided to him by the Mexican government to paint a misleading picture of what’s happening at the border — and is even using it to displace information provided by his own government.

291
The Ghost of a Flea  Sep 11, 2019 • 11:20:08am

The attempt to present post-9/11 as a period of unity is itself telling, since reactionaries and revanchists immediately leveraged the feeling of common grief to coerce people into compliance.

I keep saying it, but like the invocation of “civility” the invocation of 9/11/01 is a bad faith exercise for many of these people.

It’s not really a one or the other thing.

It’s more like…emotional abuse in a domestic settings, where the abuser takes an event that has shared emotional resonance or trauma and turns it into a means to get compliance. It works precisely because the social emotion is genuine for most.

I hate this bulkshit. If God was really judging us, don’t you think he would have stepped in with some smiting when our forefathers committed genocide against Native Americans and brought slaves from Africa? Nothing of the sort happened. You can say this is because God doesn’t exist or because God doesn’t do that kind of interfering, but holy crap! Don’t say this is God’s judgment when terrible, terrible things happened in thr past and nothing happened. One might come away with the idea that your god doesn’t care about genocide and slavery.

On this day in 1297, a Scottish army led by William Wallace defeats the English at the Battle of Stirling Bridge.

It was nothing at all like what they showed in Braveheart with the English cavalry attacking in line and getting impaled on spears.

They came over the bridge four abreast, and tried to reform on boggy ground, The Scots took advantage of that and set on them with spears.

But I guess that cinematographic image would have evoked a degree of sympathy for the poor helpless horses getting set upon and so they reworked it to show the arrogant English nobility getting hoist by the petard of their own arrogance.

A Lizard earlier today posted his/hers block list in response to a post by Teleski getting bombarded by followers of an individual he was critical of. Block lists are both a blessing (filter out the asshole preemptively) or a curse (you blocked someone whose tweets you want to see) without knowing it.
