The secret (well, not so secret) weapon of The Cars was guitarist Elliot Easton, who not only got perfect tones for the records, but could seriously play his ass off. His solo on this one is a prime example, and the super-tight chunky 8th notes in the verses.

So am I! When I was at UT Austin beginning in 1980, there was a media lab in the Undergraduate Library. You were supposed to request coursework (like Spanish records) but they also had a great collection of popular music. You could request a whole album to be played and I used to request The Cars every time I was up there. And a lot of the times the whole album would be played.
Damn, damn, damn, damn, damn! My favorite band of my college years~!

Easton never wasted a note. I always got the feeling that he had his solos worked to the note before ever going in to record them.
2) At a 2006 confirmation hearing, Kavanaugh told @SenatorLeahy

4) In a 2004 confirmation hearing, Sen. Ted Kennedy asked Kavanaugh under oath whether he had assisted William Pryor’s nomination to the 11th Circuit. Pryor had called Roe v. And some of those licks are incredibly hard to play. I know, I’ve tried.
The lick that ends the solo in You Might Think is one. He actually bends a string to walk through a diatonic scale. Fast. That is not easy to get perfect.

I’ve heard of The Cars as being described their greatest hits album and it’s certainly the first half of one due to they synergy between Easton and Ocasek.

One of my early memories of my family road tripping to visit relatives in the midwest was The Cars. We listened to the Greatest Hits cassette tape to death. It was the one tape in the vehicle which everyone in the car could agree on. One time we drove to New Mexico to visit some of my parents’ friends, it was the only tape in the car. We listened to it over and over again for several hours.

Last month, the anti-abortion group Live Action posted a video to the Facebook page of its founder Lila Rose, claiming abortion was never medically necessary, and Facebook asked the fact-checking site Health Feedback to review it. Health Feedback reached out to us as medical professionals, and we both commented that the video was inaccurate.
What happened next seems less shocking in an era when politicians routinely dismiss fact as fiction: Republican Sens. Josh Hawley (Mo.), Ted Cruz (Tex.), Kevin Cramer (N.D.), and Mike Braun (Ind.) sent a letter to Facebook complaining that the fact-check was biased, and Facebook responded by removing our assessment. Rose’s inaccurate video remains posted.
…
Neither of us is interested in having a shouting match with Lila Rose or Republican senators or any other advocate making claims about when abortion should or should not be performed. This is a question about the practice of medicine and the real-life needs of patients, and those with medical expertise are the ones best suited to answer it. When every major medical group agrees that abortion is sometimes medically necessary, it’s time to recognize that as fact.

Yet I’m encouraged too. All I gotta do is look at contemporary artists and the difference they are making on the path to legendary status legit af. I miss those absent friends. I’m not superstitious in the slightest. Yet, three weird coincidences happened to me when I drove to Tulsa to see Umphrey’s McGee perform at Cain’s Ballroom. The first time I did that Levon Helm died that day. The second time I did that Prince died that day. The third time I did that, last year, my friend I’ve known since the 3rd grade committed suicide.

Guess I’m showing my age but the first set of celebrity deaths I was aware of were in 1963-64 when Eddie Cantor, Stan Laurel, Gracie Allen and Harpo Marx all died within a couple months of each other.
Mom and Dad were really depressed when JFK was assassinated. Thanksgiving was the next week and nobody felt like having the traditional dinner. Mom just popped Swanson dinners in the oven that time and we just didn’t feel like talking at the table at all.
Then Dr. King and Bobby were killed and boy Mom got the blues. She said it was like a 1-2 punch.
Then there was that sad time 69-70 when Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison all died one after the other. Felt like that was when the 60s died.
After Nixon got re-elected Truman and LBJ died within a couple weeks of each other.
And on the job I got the calls that Gene Roddenberry and later Irwin Allen both passed within a short time. Felt like a big chunk of my childhood just dissolved…
Which celebrity death affected you the most?
For me it was JFK. I was 13 at the time. School had just let out for the day and there was a huge crowd of kids standing in the hallway. The principal was shouting YES THE PRESIDENT WAS SHOT! HE’S DEAD! NOW GO HOME!!
Some of the kids started crying.
I ran all the way home.
re: #73 The Pie Overlord!
I was in high school, and it came over the loudspeaker, saying he was shot, and we were all just in shock. Then later came the word that he was dead. I don’t even remember if we went home then or not; just pure shock. That wasn’t supposed to happen in the USA!

I’ll be honest. Kurt Cobain. I had found myself listening to his music, I was led down an exciting musical path and he made me feel alive. Then he killed himself.

re: #73 The Pie Overlord!
Yes I remember that sad day. 3rd grade class. We were watching an educational program on WQED in Pittsburgh, it was a spelling bee. We were spelling the words that the instructor was saying then all of a sudden the tv instructor said that there was a news bulletin. The screen went blank. An announcer said that either JFK or LBJ had been shot and they said Jackie was covered in blood but they didn’t know if she was shot.
The principal came in and turned the channel to KDKA (CBS) in Pittsburgh. We saw Walter Cronkite doing his best to find out what was going on…then he did his best to hold back his tears as he said JFK had passed. We were told to go ahead home and Frank the janitor lowered the flag to half staff as we left. I rushed home. Mom just cried…
Then Mom and I watched as Oswald was coming out of the police station. Mom was on the phone with a friend and said she hoped someone would kill Oswald. Right after that, Ruby shot him. Mom yelled, “OMG He’s been shot!”
We were both stunned…

But actually, RFK bothered me the most. I was old enough to really follow politics and government by then, and he spoke to me. Then, instead of looking forward, we got Nixon. It’s like we were looking forward with Obama, and then BAM!
Now more memories. Mom and Dad loved Mario Lanza and Nat King Cole. They played their records a lot. Both of them really were affected when these two greats passed.
For me, it was when Frank Zappa died. He had been my muse ever since I first heard Freak Out in 1966. Freak Out was the first LP I ever bought and I had to hide it in my bedroom since Mom and Dad would not allow “jungle music” to be played in the house. So when Mom and Dad went grocery shopping I’d put Frank on the record player. Once they almost caught me and I had to pull the LP off the player and hide it in a stack of opera records. That night I got up at 1AM, snuck downstairs to retrieve Freak Out and put it back in the hiding place…
I did this everyday after school scores of times when I was in the 5th grade: I was always the first one home (I rode my bike to school when the weather allowed), I’d insert “Nevermind” into my father’s *big expensive* stereo system and blast “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” One time my neighbor (who was elderly) knocked very loudly on the front door and told me to turn it down. She told my parents, I got in trouble. Was grounded, yelled at, etc.

I was in English class when a student who seemed distressed entered, told the teacher something, and left. She said nothing to us and continued the normal program. It wasn’t until the next class that I learned what happened. Apparently the English teacher was skeptical of the information and did not pass it on. We were all in a state of shock.

I was delivering the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette at 6 in the morning. The paper indicating that Bobby appeared to have won the California primary. I was delivering the papers not knowing what happened until I went to the first tavern that was opened and the TV was on saying Bobby had been shot…Felt like a real jerk delivering the rest of the papers with them saying that Bobby probably won California and the Democratic nomination…

Yet full of amazing subtext that went beyond the usual pop cliche’s. 1/2 garage band, 1/2 art house and 1/2 ironic cool that hit the radio in 1978 like a f’in sledgehammer. Nothing else like it on the wasteland of commercial radio (musicoutfitters.com)
I remember senior year (1972-73) where Jobriath was advertised everywhere as being the next big thing. The first singer who said he was gay. Controversial as all CENSORED. Pittsburgh radio stations would not play his “offensive record”. WIIC (Channel 11 the NBC station) did not show the episode of The Midnight Special where he was singing several cuts from his debut album. The record stores in the Pittsburgh area were pressured by churches to not stock his record. He did a second album that flopped and then he faded into obscurity. His body was found in his apartment, he had been dead several weeks, cause was AIDS. His parents buried him with a marker that showed his actual name and they did everything they could to erase what he did…

The government says there’s no proof the attacks came from Yemen, yet they don’t provide proof they came from Iran.
In an escalating series of moves, Tehran has sought to counter or undermine those sanctions — attacking a handful of oil tankers, seizing others and their crews and assaulting Saudi oil facilities, according to U.S. officials.

Smells. The timing of the story is wrong and too much has already been shown about the drone~cruise missiles that were supposed to be from Yemen.
1) the missiles had to go past the defense zone around Riyadh which is protected by expensive toys bought in the USA. Big embarrassment for the Military/Industrial Complex.
2) even without Bolton, Bibi wants the Mango Moron to start his war with Iran so he can more easily consolidate his power.
No, Iran supplied tech and support to the Yemeni who fired the missiles across the empty quarter. THAT has probably already lead to summary executions in the kingdom. Now they’re scrambling to spin this towards the goal they really want - war with Iran.
You know , I really appreciate Chris Thiles’ virtuosity and musicianship, bit his instrument of choice, the mandolin (half the time tuning, half time playing out of tune, as the folk band saying goes) just sucks as a classical instrument. Go to YouTube and watch any performance of it on a fiddle, and there is no comparison.
The mandolin has intrinsic limitations. It is not an instrument that can legitimately play that Bach piece although he did it as well as it could be done. A very successful fail.

Have to agree about this piece. There are Bach pieces that can be transposed to the mandolin: this isn’t one of them.

Based on Trump’s past record and his belligerent “locked and loaded” comment, my guess is we won’t be involved in any counterattack. Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. So Kavanaugh was caught in a tangle of lies over the weekend? This surprises anyone? Really? He lied through his teeth all during the confirmation hearing, and now we have confirmation of same. He perjured himself in that testimony. That itself is an impeachable offense.
Yeah, add that to the list of things that wont happen because the GOP controls the Senate and removal of yet another person wholly lacking in character and judgment who engaged in high crimes/misdemeanors is thwarted so long as the GOP retains control and can get to 60 votes (and yeah, even if the Democrats retake, getting to 60 is a very long shot). We shouldn’t write all of this off, and it makes 2020 even more important than it already is.
Enablers like Collins must be booted from the Senate, and the race to unseat McConnell is even more important.
And yet all that pales to Trump getting kicked out of office (and ultimately being held criminally responsible for his crimes in and out of office.
The entire GOP shows depraved indifference to the rule of law - and howl when anyone tries to hold them accountable. Hold them accountable. Vote the fuckers out of office, and then hold those who engaged in criminal conduct criminally liable.
It also means that Democrats have to focus on more than just one election - or one election cycle. It means taking the long view of rolling back the GOP at all levels of government. Every election needs to be contested. Every last one. Yeah, I know that there are districts that are solidly red and have been for generations, but you signal to Democrats everywhere that fighting for every district matters, and that their voices matter. It also means that Democrats have to accept those who are not going to have the super progressive far left views - that they need to take a big tent approach, where they can squabble on some policy matters, but align on the big picture - namely that defeating the GOP to protect civil and voting rights and the rule of law is paramount, and that defeating the GOP in the Senate means putting teeth into the checks and balances that McConnell has thrown out the door so that he can remake the federal judiciary in the Federalist/Heritage minset.

A pleasant dream: but on a serious level, I can see only 3 really GOOD shots at flips (ME, CO, AZ) and 2 decent chances (IA, GA). And of course, another chance in GA for retiring Isakson’s replacement. Of course, flipping 5 Senate seats would be a worthy accomplishment in itself, but it is still going to be an uphill slog to gain (D) control (especially as AL is likely to flip the other way).
But even if the Dems gain a Majority in the 117th, it still might not be enough to overcome what will doubtlessly be even more obdurate/hysterical obstructionism by the GOP. Maybe if they still had LBJ as Majority Leader: a Leader who ruled his caucus with an iron hand, and knew (and exploited) every obscure rule of Senate procedures to steamroller opposition: unfortunately, that’s not in Chuck Schumer’s wheelhouse.

So unless they manage to disenfranchise even further for 2020 than for 2018 (which is possible when the Rs camp out to generate a quorum during planned recesses in order to push stuff the governor would veto were he to have a chance), it may be in play too since it’s also a statewide election and can’t just be gerrymandered like the Assembly.

INDEPENDENCE, Ky. (WXIX/Gray News) - A man arrested over the weekend and accused of threatening to blow up a Cincinnati business was targeting Planned Parenthood, a Northern Kentucky judge revealed in court Monday morning.
Daniel Kibler was arrested on charges of possession of a destructive device or booby trap device, terroristic threatening and eight counts of wanton endangerment after authorities searched his home in Independence, Ky.
It was confirmed authorities received reports that Kibler threatened to “blow up” a business in Cincinnati.
Police said they executed a search warrant for his home, where at least one illegal device was uncovered.
Sources said people who know Kibler reported the threats to authorities.
The case remains under investigation by the Kenton County Police Department.
Police declined comment Monday morning, saying they expect to release more information once they notify the organization involved in the threat.

The Times reported that Sacklers engaged in all kinds of sham transactions to try and shield their personal finances from the settlement deal, and now we see that they declared bankruptcy. The states and stakeholders in seeing Purdue/Sacklers held accountable for their wrongdoing will fight the bankruptcy claims in court - claiming that the only reason for the bankruptcy to be filed is to avoid responsibility for the crisis of their own making. And one could make a convincing case that you could pierce the corporate veil and hold them personally liable for the malfeasance by Purdue since it’s a closely held company.

Maybe it’s a ‘false analogy’ fallacy.
X is like Y.
Y has property P.
Therefore, X has property P.
(but X really is not too much like Y)
Mike Huckabee is a Christian. Saint Sebastian was a Christian.
Saint Sebastian was martyred by being shot full of arrows.
Therefore, any criticism of Mike Huckabee is like shooting him full of arrows.

Yeah we heard about their water sports. There is even talk that Putin has video of it in Russia.
Today Google honors B.B. King on what would be his 94th birthday.

Almost, but this would be more like:
X has property P.
Y has property P.
X also has property Q.
Therefore, Y has property Q.

There are two ways of looking at this. The first, is when the person A points out that X has property Q generalizes to Y. The second is when person B who hears person A say that X has property Q implies that Person Y also has it. It’s the second version I’m interested in.

I am glad I got to see him live (in Büdingen, Germany ca. 1996) while he was still with us.

This woman, Zaria Forman, is really talented. She makes “Monumental Pastel Drawings of Endangered Icebergs” - thisiscolossal.com
There is a quick timelapse video of her working on one of these.

Never had the pleasureof seeing him perform. I did, however, literally walk into a conversation between B.B and Les Paul at a club in Manhattan one night. Despite being face to face with two living legends, I managed to recover enough to tell them both how much I loved and respected their work.
Lester was surly. B.B. put out his hand and introduced himself and asked my name. If ever there was a moment that I was a complete goofy fanboi, that was the moment.

Thanks, that’s cool.
The my favorite piece at the Dallas Museum of Art is Fredric Edwin Church.

They have as much variance as mountains, cliffs and other rock formations do on land. Some look like giant slabs, some look like pyramids, some look like tear drops.

Greenberg, Goldberg, Iceberg, they’re all the same…

Luxembourg govt source says the request to have the Bettel Johnson news conference inside came at the last minute - it was, said the source, impossible for logistical and security reasons to relocate everything inside because the Lux PM’s office was too small to host all press
— Tony Connelly (@tconnellyRTE) September 16, 2019
The source also said the only way to manage it would have been to select a tiny number of journalists to go inside and this would have been unfair to the rest. The source said that 140 journalists had been accredited for the meeting.

What’s the logical fallacy where someone immediately jumps to the conclusion that a criticism of a person or a subset of a group applies to everyone in that group.
Maybe a hasty generalization?

USS will obviously need watercraft to keep Cheeto from being harpooned by a passing Japanese ship and beach buggies to intercept gangs of concerned environmentalists who might try rolling him back into the water when he sunbathes on the sand

But mountains and cliffs look the same yesterday and today and tomorrow… icebergs you can’t possibly go looking for “the one in that picture I liked” and expect to ever find it.
