Drunk History: How Louis Armstrong Became Louis Armstrong (Feat. Miles Brown) [VIDEO]

Humor • Views: 25,868

YouTube

Louis Armstrong grew up listening to music in the brothels of New Orleans and wound up becoming a jazz legend.

About Drunk History:
Based on the popular web series, Drunk History is the liquored-up narration of our nation’s history. Host Derek Waters, along with an ever-changing cast of actors and comedians, travels across the country to present the rich tales that every city in this land has to offer. Booze helps bring out the truth. It’s just that sometimes the truth is a little incoherent.

I wonder if it was some sort of domestic issue that escalated out of control and into the church, resulting in the shooting.

Granted, it could just be some random spree killer.

Certainly the horrendous 2017 Sutherland Springs massacre in Texas was due to a domestic dispute.

Then it’s pretty much a repeat of this incident: New Life Church shooting

Murray then entered the building’s main foyer where he wounded Larry Bourbonnais, as Bourbonnais was attempting to yell at Murray to distract Murray from hurting others; Bourbonnais was minorly wounded in the forearm with shrapnel. At this point, church member Jeanne Assam, a private security guard working for New Life Church, who was herself a former Minneapolis Police Department law enforcement officer, opened fire upon Murray.

(fun fact: Jeanne Assam, credited by the pastor with potentially saving over 100 lives, was later kicked out by the very same church for being a lesbian).

Barefoot Grin  Dec 29, 2019 • 12:19:42pm

I haven’t watched Chuck Todd’s show on disinformation, but someone posted a link to a mediaite story where both Marty Baron and Dean Baquet—unless there’s wider context I’m missing—seemed to double down on the need to understand the Trump voter (‘we respect the Trump voter’). Of course, a quick look at the comments by the usual chowder heads that go to mediaite demonstrates precisely why it’s a fool’s errand—filled to the brim with “libtards typing on their Obama phones” and “they say they respect us but you can feel the contempt” and “I don’t need the respect of nazis and commie libs!”

I haven’t seen it ever. What gets me as the tweet in 1 said the Dems have to walk over egg shells not to offend rural and white America but there is never any condemnation of how urbanites especially of color are by the Republicans as being nothing but moochers. There’s a lot of self delusion in bright red America and it gets fed by right wing elitists who love to talk up the supposed moral superiority of those areas but ignore they have crime, drug abuse, etc too because they’re obsessed with acting like Red America is the only real America.

This is Briarwood Presbyterian Church (PCA, a conservative Presbyterian denom). The church does not have a seminary. It has a school on two campuses with 1,800 students. The fear expressed with allowing Briarwood to have its own police force is that the police would have yet another reason to suppress bad behavior (read: child sexual abuse) getting out to the public. But they still got it.

IIRC (possibly, and probably not), wasn’t the AL “Church Police” law a matter of legally redefining such forces as official “police/law-enforcement” vs. their previous status as “private security” or something? IOW, allowing them the official latitude to arrest people, etc.?

obama gave official speeches
trump gives campaign “rallies”

some people didnt like obama’s policies
those who ‘hated’ obama did/do so because he is black, not because of his policies, politics or rhetoric

trump’s policies are cruel, regressive, separating, and isolating.
they are also ineffective and mostly counterproductive to his stated goals (ie trade)

people dislike or hate trump because he has thrown down the gauntlet, disavowed them first, and reinforces it daily.

he purposely, loudly and daily denigrates, separates, and attacks.
he creates us vs them.
in his rallies, tweets and out loud he daily shows open contempt for half the country.
he admits he’s not the president of everybody.

blatant criminal behavior and thumbing his nose at convention aside.

BTW, not like it will be an unexpected revelation, but the usual comments have been published (NYT) about Grafton Thomas, the accused machete-attacker at the rabbi’s house in Monsey, NY:

Mr. Thomas, who prosecutors said they believed acted alone, is facing five counts of attempted murder and one count of first degree burglary.

At his arraignment on Sunday morning, Mr. Thomas, who was wearing a white prison suit, pleaded not guilty to all charges and offered no comment.

Some neighbors said Mr. Thomas, who is from Greenwood Lake, N.Y., about 20 miles from Monsey, was an unassuming neighbor.

***
“People are very surprised to find out that this individual is responsible for such horrific actions,” he said. “There was no reason to believe that he was capable of doing anything like this.”

One really has to wonder whether it is just a journalistic convention, or are so many of these violent attackers really the sort of “unassuming neighbors” they are almost-invariably described as?

re: #86 Jay C

One really has to wonder whether it is just a journalistic convention, or are so many of these violent attackers really the sort of “unassuming neighbors” they are almost-invariably described as?

As social animals we’re built to trust one another; as encultured individuals we’re trained to make judgements about self-preservation on the basis of a slate of heuristics about who is “safe” and who has authority that are built on assumptions that are (1) filled with unreflected-on mythology about who “we” are, and who the violent “they” are, (2) assume that people like us are okay people. Most people don’t know their neighbors and largely ignore them, filling in tropes where they have no information should they ever bother to consider them. There’s even an implicit societal incentive to think of your neighbors as “normal” because the alternative—that criminal deviance is always possible is there is no easily-recognizable set of clues for who’s going to get violent—upends the very premise of in-group safety.

And most killers are capable of performing “normality” to a degree sufficient to pass through the extremely limited scrutiny they receive. Not because they’re geniuses, but because we’re bad at detection.

Fire him? No, it’s holding Netanyahu accountable for his misconduct and crimes. Being a politician doesn’t place one above the law.

Except that that seems to be the exact argument Netanyahu is making. And invoking the principle of “democracy” to try to justify it.

i know this is well intended. and i’ve seen it a lot today.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Jewish community and those in White Settlement, Texas. Our country was founded on the principles of religious freedom and diversity. No one should fear for their safety because of their religion, race, gender, nationality, or orientation. 1/2

in this context, i would much prefer “No one should fear for their safety”.

I’ll quote a much-despised ward councilor, who sets the tone in my town long after her departure.

This woman, “Mrs. F.”, lived on one of our great greenspaces, the public park we know as Salem Common. One fall day, she called 911.

“There are PEOPLE playing FOOTBALL on the Common!”
After a few moments to regain his composure, the dispatcher replies, “What’s the score?!”
Click.

Living in the wasteland of the free…

We got preachers dealing in politics and diamond mines
and their speech is growing increasingly unkind
They say they are Christ’s disciples
but they don’t look like Jesus to me
and it feels like I am living in the wasteland of the free

We got politicians running races on corporate cash
Now don’t tell me they don’t turn around and kiss them peoples’ ass
You may call me old-fashioned
but that don’t fit my picture of a true democracy
and it feels like I am living in the wasteland of the free

We got CEO’s making two hundred times the workers’ pay
but they’ll fight like hell against raising the minimum wage
and If you don’t like it, mister, they’ll ship your job
to some third-world country ‘cross the sea
and it feels like I am living in the wasteland of the free

Living in the wasteland of the free
where the poor have now become the enemy
Let’s blame our troubles on the weak ones
Sounds like some kind of Hitler remedy
Living in the wasteland of the free

We got little kids with guns fighting inner city wars
So what do we do, we put these little kids behind prison doors
and we call ourselves the advanced civilization
that sounds like crap to me
and it feels like I am living in the wasteland of the free

We got high-school kids running ‘round in Calvin Klein and Guess
who cannot pass a sixth-grade reading test
but if you ask them, they can tell you
the name of every crotch on MTV
and it feels like I am living in the wasteland of the free

We kill for oil, then we throw a party when we win
Some guy refuses to fight, and we call that the sin
but he’s standing up for what he believes in
and that seems pretty damned American to me
and it feels like I am living in the wasteland of the free

Living in the wasteland of the free
where the poor have now become the enemy
Let’s blame our troubles on the weak ones
Sounds like some kind of Hitler remedy
Living in the wasteland of the free

While we sit gloating in our greatness
justice is sinking to the bottom of the sea
Living in the wasteland of the free
Living in the wasteland of the free
Living in the wasteland of the free

John Lewis has prepared us for after he leaves us.

Still think Edmund Pettis Bridget should be named after him.

here’s parts of what wikipedia says about Edmund Pettus:

en.wikipedia.org

Edmund Winston Pettus (born July 6, 1821 - July 27, 1907) was an American politician who represented Alabama in the United States Senate from 1897 to 1907. He previously served as a senior officer of the Confederate States Army who commanded infantry in the Western Theater of the American Civil War. After the war, he was politically active in the Ku Klux Klan, serving as a grand dragon.

In 1896, at the age of 75, Pettus ran for U.S. Senate as a Democrat and won, beating incumbent James L. Pugh. The state legislature, rather than state voters, elected United States Senators then. His campaign relied on his successes in organizing and popularizing the Alabama Klan and his prominent opposition to the constitutional amendments following the Civil War that elevated former slaves to the status of free citizens. On March 4, 1897, he began service in the U.S. Senate. The state legislature re-elected him in 1903.

Ayep, I’d totally agree. Gold leaf and gold accents in general work well when they’re used sparingly, more to highlight the decor than to dominate it. When you have the latter, the obvious conclusion is that you’re trying to flaunt wealth that you don’t have.
