President Donald Trump announced that a ban on travelers to the United States from Europe would be in place for the next 30 days, in an attempt to stem the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.Calling coronavirus a “foreign virus,” Trump attacked Europe for not taking the same actions to control the disease that he had. “As a result” of Europe’s inaction, Trump said, “a large number of clusters” of coronavirus “were seeded by travelers from Europe.”
Trump said “these prohibitions will not only apply to the tremendous amount of trade and cargo, but various other things as we get approval.”

The NBA cancelled the season (suspended, but it’s cancelled for all intents and purposes).
Two hours ago, the board of governors was considering playing out the season without fans in the stands. Then a player was diagnosed with it (and the player was a fucking lunatic because before the diagnosis, he licked microphones in the media room).
The league acted after that player was diagnosed.
Expect the NHL and MLB to follow suit in short order.
Sociopath Trump didn’t focus one bit on public health and is lying their asses off about how they’re prepared.
None of them are prepared for any of this. None of them know what they are doing, and it’s going to get a lot of people killed - and this disease doesn’t care what religious group you belong to, what race you are, or what political affiliation. It will spread and affect your lives in ways you don’t yet understand.
Check that - the people who are poor are going to suffer disproportionately since they will be unable to get care. People who live away from hospitals will find themselves on their own because the health system is overwhelmed.
Trump has done precisely dick to activate the military to help. That right there is the tell he doesn’t have a clue and no one is bothering to do what need be done. He’s leaving it to the states, and they’ll be overwhelmed in short order.

Every generation needs to be taught what conservatism really is.
Since schools can’t do that, it’s up to parents and other concerned individuals to teach the next generation.
That phrase “the voters have memories of goldfish” comes from the fact that people are not taught that conservatism only cares about power and money, and will kill as many people as it needs to do that.
Every country, every century, throughout time.
This one sentence is such an encapsulation of what a mess this WH is. Announced a ban on cargo they didn’t intend. As well as one on “various other things,” which includes…what? And from whom is he seeking approval for this ban (or is it an exemption)? He’s the president. https://t.co/aCmxMhCJrc

And yet, conservatives in this country fought on the side of the CSA. Prior to that they fought on the side of the Crown.
The Roman Empire fell because of the Catholic Church’s ascendancy, followed by a thousand years of dark ages.
They again plunged Europe into the Thirty Year’s War when their power was challenged, while Martin Luther was spinning up antisemitism in Germany.
Kaiser Wilhelm and Adolph Hitler plunged all of Europe into war and death twice in twenty years.
I stand by my statement.
I just watched the video of Trump’s address in the previous thread and he seemed really off to me. Two things jumped out at me:
A) very fatigued and tired. Slow delivery and cadence, very forced and without energy.

UPDATED w/ @mikedebonis @seungminkim House moves toward quick vote on Democratic coronavirus package https://t.co/YQrGhcEBLT
— Erica Werner (@ericawerner) March 11, 2020
Outlines of the plan were shared Wednesday evening with Trump administration officials, with the hope of reaching a bipartisan deal ahead of the vote. The legislation includes free coronavirus testing, up to three months of emergency paid leave benefits to all workers affected by the coronavirus, and could also include an 8 percentage point increase in the federal share of Medicaid payments to states, lawmakers and aides said.
The House effort shows the urgency with which political leaders are moving to contain the economic turmoil caused by the coronavirus outbreak. Although the Senate may not have time to act before a congressional recess scheduled for next week, a number of Republican senators indicated openness Wednesday to at least some elements of the House plan and said it was important to act quickly…
Events were developing rapidly on Capitol Hill after the World Health Organization announced it was declaring the coronavirus a pandemic. A senior administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss internal thinking, said that the White House would review details of the plan before commenting. But this official was complimentary of the effort by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), saying, “From the beginning, ideas the speaker had were important parts of the conversation.”
Grassley could have just said “We don’t want to govern”:
Some GOP senators were waiting to take their cues from the White House. “A lot of it will depend on what the White House says,” said Senate Finance Chairman Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa).

Since last week, I’ve been pushing at work for my group to prepare for possibly working at home. We’re a software group, and have moved our development offline. I’ve been suggesting exploring something like github so we can do development. Our company’s response right now is to ban all unnecessary travel and to have us register a phone number and email to receive emergency updates. I keep telling them we don’t want to be in a position where the company says “You have to leave by the end of the day. If you have the ability to work from home, you can do so, otherwise it’ll be vacation.”
But everyone else really is in that mode of “it really isn’t that bad.” The conservative guy I argue with is having trouble reconciling what he’s hearing - especially after I sent him the NCAA notice - with what Fox is telling him. I’m off tomorrow and Friday, so I don’t know what he’ll think about that. And things could change drastically by Monday.

How soon before the money guys running the Republican party tell the RNC and other leaders to get this idiot out of office ASAP? It feels like we’re getting close to it currently.
How long before the money guys funding the GOP figure out it’s the GOP’s policies which cause recessions and depressions? I don’t get the idea they are particularly smart.
That and you can make money in a falling market if you know what you’re doing.

Even as many large gatherings are cancelled, brain-dead inmates at the University of Dayton decided to hold an extra one:
UD campus police disperse crowd of more than 1,000
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Dayton Police and the University of Dayton Police responded to Lowes Street in the South Student neighborhood on reports of a massive crowd.
University officials said the crowd gathered around 11 p.m. and began throwing objects and jumping on cars. Students said they were celebrating the cancellation of classes due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Police in riot gear fired several pepper balls into the crowd. Units from across the city were also called in to help after verbal orders to disperse were ignored. University Officials said at least one person was hurt by a thrown bottle.
University officials also said the crowd dispersed after 2 a.m. It is not clear how many arrests were made.

A buddy of mine went to the Rockets game last night. Here’s how the text went a few hours ago:
Me: NBA looking at putting season on hold. Decision to be made by tomorrow. Either hold or no fans.
Him: I went to Rockets last night. Feel fine. Such a massive over reaction
Me: Thanks, doctor. If you had it, you wouldn’t know it yet.
Him: Whatever. It’s a bad cold in healthy people. Only people with compromised immune systems die. Like with the flu
Me (an hour later when the NBA canceled the season): Rudy Gobert for the jazz tested positive. He’s 27 years old.
Him: *crickets*

I just watched the video of Trump’s address in the previous thread and he seemed really off to me. Two things jumped out at me:
A) very fatigued and tired. Slow delivery and cadence, very forced and without energy.
B) labored breathing. I don’t know if it was chest congestion or what but he really seemed to be taking some shallow breaths and long pauses throughout the spiel.
Not going to go all CT here, but I really do wonder if he’s sick and they’re just pumping him up with whatever they can to make it through that speech.

It wasn’t super busy. The paper aisle had reasonable piles of toilet paper, and more importantly paper towels. Nothing beats paper (towel). I worry that the local business owners who are all painfully R are going to work us all until we are sick and then bill us our vacation days if a proper quarantine ever gets declared. I picked up paper towels, about 30000 calories (big bag of rice, other stuff), ibuprofen, and a bottle of rum, cuz I can’t watch Trump sober.

But everyone else really is in that mode of “it really isn’t that bad.” The conservative guy I argue with is having trouble reconciling what he’s hearing - especially after I sent him the NCAA notice - with what Fox is telling him. re: #182 Belafon
Futures are essentially bets on what one (or many) equities will cost at some time in the future. I’m not sure exactly how that translates into the general market numbers, but it’s what relatively aggressive (I’m not going to say smart) money thinks will happen early in the day tomorrow. Usually the overnight futures are a self-fulfilling prophecy, but as events go down during the day the market will drift from that prediction.
Don’t invest in futures unless you really, really, really know what you’re doing. Scarier than shorting.

The census is supposed to count where people are as of April 1.
Hundreds of thousands of college students who would normally be counted in their (blue) college towns will be home in probably redder areas instead because their colleges have closed.
That’s going to mess with redistricting in an ugly way that will last for a decade. Especially in places like NC, OH and GA where the GOP is in charge.

Tests indicate coronavirus can survive in the air
Federally funded tests conducted by scientists from several major institutions indicated that the novel form of coronavirus behind a worldwide outbreak can survive in the air for several hours.
A study awaiting peer review from scientists at Princeton University, the University of California-Los Angeles and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) posted online Wednesday indicated that the COVID-19 virus could remain viable in the air “up to 3 hours post aerosolization,” while remaining alive on plastic and other surfaces for up to three days.
“Our results indicate that aerosol and fomite transmission of HCoV-19 is plausible, as the virus can remain viable in aerosols for 42 multiple hours and on surfaces up to days,” reads the study’s abstract.

I’m hoping to get a follow, so I can better say what she said, but she basically said treat it like pneumonia or (I think she said) bronchitis. She also said prepare for it, because you don’t want to leave the house except to go to the doctor. IIRC, get advil and tylenol so you can alternate those every three hours to keep the temperature down. Get a humidifier, but if you can’t, sit in your bathroom with the shower running. Make yourself some soup in advance and freeze it.
But this advise was only if you are otherwise healthy enough to take care of it at home. Any prior breathing problems probably means you need more extensive care.

The classic example of a fomite is a park water fountain from which many people drink. Infectious agents deposited by one person can potentially be transmitted to a subsequent drinker. However, many objects that we come into contact with can serve as fomites: doorknobs, elevator buttons, hand rails, phones, writing implements, keyboards, toys in a day care center, etc. Even a stethoscope can serve as a fomite if it isn’t cleansed.”

To your specific query, a future is a contract to buy or sell an underlying asset at an agreed upon price sometime in the future, even if its actual value has changed. It is something you can trade on an exchange. An option is very similar, except you are not obligated to buy or sell if the underlying asset is worth less than the contract when its future date is reached, though you are out the money you spent on the option. I am not sure of the exact hours for the futures markets though I think it is different depending on the underlying asset type.
Underlying assets can be many things including stocks (limited partial ownership of a company), and there are some stocks that represent baskets of other stocks, like ETFs. You can buy and sell these just like regular stocks, but the value is based on all the stocks in the basket that they represent. You can also buy and sell a future contract on an ETF that represents a basket of stocks.
The DJIA (DOW) is an index that tracks the performance of 30 large publicly traded companies based on the stock values. There is an ETF that represents them all, and a futures contract that can be placed on it.
When you see a metric that says the DJIA (DOW) futures market is down 1000 points, it means the price of future contracts on an underlying stock (ETF) that represents the value of the 30 companies listed in the DOW/DJIA is worth that much less than it was when the stock market closed.

Shrug. I have no idea WTF Leslie Knope is nor do I care. As for philosophical responses to My Corona, I’ll stick to the stoic emperor.
Parks & Rec was a workplace sitcom set in a midwestern small town, Amy Poehler headed the department. It’s about local government.
Joe Biden is Leslie Knope’s hero.

A believer may argue God needed Bowie for his band, whereas Satan likes Trump right where he is.
Nice!
