A film by Yulia Mahr.
Declaration Readings: Eleanor Roosevelt, Kiki Layne, Hiba Sellaoui

“The opening words of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, drafted in 1948, are “All human beings are are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” These inspiring words are a guiding principle for the whole declaration but, looking around at the world we have made in the decades since they were written, it is clear that we have forgotten them. The recent brutal events in the US, leading to the tragic deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, as well as countless other abuses around the world, are proof of that. At such times it is easy to feel hopeless but, just as the problems of our world are of our own making, so the solutions can be. While the past is fixed, the future is yet unwritten, and the declaration sets out an uplifting vision of a better and fairer world that is within our reach if we choose it. VOICES is a musical space to reconnect with these inspiring principles and Yulia’s striking film depicts this inspiration in a beautiful way, while offering a glimpse into her full length film of our project to come”

“…In 1930, during the administration of President Herbert Hoover, Congress passed the Air Mail Act of 1930. Using its provisions, Postmaster General Walter Folger Brown held a meeting with the executives of the top airlines, later dubbed the “Spoils Conference”, in which the airlines effectively divided among themselves the air mail routes.”

This is the sort of shit that got us involved in two wars that killed or maimed millions, cost us trillions that we’re never going to recover, and ruined our reputation in the Middle East for at least a generation.

At some point, inviting known liars onto your show just to see what their latest lies will be does nothing but get people killed.

America is about to see what smart Republicans saw in Kamala Harris years ago, WaPo

By Dan Morain, a former reporter for the Los Angeles Times and editorial page editor of the Sacramento Bee, has covered California politics and policy since 1991.

A look at Harris’s rise in California politics. Among her earliest supporters were the Pritzker (IL governor) family and Charles Schwab. She was one of the earliest supporters of Barack Obama, and he in turn helped her.

Smart Republicans could see Kamala D. Harris coming years ago, and they tried to smother her early. Now that Joe Biden has chosen the first-term senator from California as his running mate, America is about to see what those Republicans could see long ago: Harris is a quick learner and gifted political performer with genuine star power.
It’s facile to compare Harris to former president Barack Obama, though the two are friends. Harris, 55, is the daughter of two academics, a mother from India and a father from Jamaica, who separated when she was 5. Harris and her younger sister were raised primarily by their mom.

Thanks! The sausages were cooked in the same pan as the potatoes so the spuds picked up some serious flavor from the sausage. It was an Andouille recipe so there was some heat involved. The fat was tinged red from the cayenne. As plated, the red specks are Aleppo pepper.

Never one to be tethered to the facts, Rep. Collins (R-Ga) claims FBI lawyer falsified document to “sabotage [Trump] campaign.”

If so, the FBI lawyer was a little tardy.

Didn’t have the same experience with Catholics who endlessly harassed me in school and loved to bully who they called “N-CLANG” head.

And that goes double for the Catholic teachers who vehemently hated me because Grandpa and Grandma Bacon led the Steelworkers Organizing Committee during the 30s. They were VIRULENTLY Union Haters and let me know it!

Everyone has different experiences Joe. My great grandfathers were both UMWA and devout mass goers.

That’s because the contractors who cover those things generally don’t get to demand the sort of money that weapons manufacturers do. Not as much money in the upkeep of barracks as there is building fighter jets that will spend most of their lives sitting in hangers waiting for “The Big One.”

Artist Luchita Hurtado died Thursday, August 13 in California. She was 99 years old. She had her first major exhibition two years ago at age 97, but she had been creating art since she was quite young. It had just been stored away. Here’s an obituary:

theguardian.com

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art had staged a retrospective of her art earlier this year. The museum is currently closed but the exhibition remains in place in hopes that the museum will be able to reopen so people can see it.

Here’s a link to the LACMA exhibition: lacma.org

Anyway, take a few minutes and look at this woman’s paintings. They’re remarkable.

Second cat has had his bath. He’s an oddball. Had to be coaxed from under the bed with the sound of kibble, came right into the bathroom for his drink of water (we keep a waterbowl in the tub), and hung around with me while I set up the bath (in an empty tub with a 6 qt. tub of water, generic baby shampoo). He sang during his whole bath. He’s part Siamese, in the ‘points’ of his coat color, and his vocal chords. His fluffiness is beginning to return.

Trump will probably demand that his brother be buried somewhere along a fairway at Bedminster so that he can doff his MAGA hat briefly has he rides on by to whatever trap his ball is in that he’ll throw out when he thinks no one is looking. And he’ll make his brother’s family pay for the burial.

Since he mentioned that he has a revolver and is looking to get a shotgun for home defense, I don’t think either myself or my mother will visit him anytime soon. Since he’s retired, all he has on is Fox News, and when we were talking about the COVID19 vaccine, he said again that I wasn’t reading the ‘right news sources’.

When I told him Trump was a lair, he cited the fence, immigration, and military as wins. And when I further pressed him about Trump’s idea about pardoning Edward Snowden, he dodged it.

In the early 90s just after Clinton was elected my parents had some of our dear friends from the Presby church we attended over to after-service lunch (as one does). In the middle of the meal the woman next to me leaned toward me and whispered, “aren’t the Clintons the most sinful disgusting people on earth?” That was the beginning of my realization that a shared faith meant that my parents also broke bread with a lot of assholes. That’s “destroy the village to save it” thinking. You can’t undo the cheating of the legitimate process by simply dashing the process and installing the “loser.” Biden wouldn’t be the duly-elected leader, he’d be the guy installed in a coup whose legitimacy would forever be in question. Nothing he signed or ordered would be safe from challenge in the courts.

They won’t find out. The fact that conspiracy theorists are being used as part of a conspiracy to use conspiracy theorists to spread disinformation via conspiracy theories will be dismissed as a conspiracy theory disseminated by Soros and Gates as a conspiracy to implant the idea among conspiracy theorists that conspiracy theorists are being used as part of a conspiracy to use conspiracy theorists to spread disinformation via conspiracy theories.

on this:

we already know the expected ‘spike’ is a fantasy:

- 129 million total votes cast in 2016.
- USPS handles 472,000,000 pieces of mail a day.
- project 70% of mail in of all ballots in 2020 = 84,000,000.
- Sent in over 5 days = 17,000,000 a day, that is an increase of 3.7% over those five days.
- Spread it over 10 days = 1.8% bump. Not much really.

yes - during the month of December the PO handles 15,000,000,000 articles.

- trump is trying to scare people into not using mail in, and then not voting at all.

The only issue will be willful negligence and illegality by USPS workers (defined as everyone from Lejoy on down)

I just now almost had a teaching moment with my wife. I heard her calling from the bathroom, so I went to see what was up. Turns out that one of my sons had left the toilet paper roll on the far side of the sink, so she couldn’t reach it. I took the opportunity to teach some American cultural history:

Wife: “Hurry, hand me the roll.”

Me: “Did you now that when I was a child there was a TV show called ‘Branded’, and we made a funny….”

Wife: “Just hurry up and hand me the roll.”

Me: “So we changed the words to the theme song to ‘stranded, stranded on the toilet bowl; what do you do when you’re stranded… and you can’t reach the roll’.”

Wife: [had already done the half waddle to grab the roll and completed the other half waddle back to the bowl and was glaring.]

I either taught her self reliance or I’m sleeping again on the sofa.

The first ballots will be cast in about 3 weeks. This is a good year to get it done early, if that’s a choice. Our state was forced to liberalize absentee voting a bit, but remains determined to undermine mail voting with or without Trump’s help. Our county holds the 5th largest city, and exactly 2 clerical persons are assigned to handle the multiple (3) mail excursions necessary to apply, receive, and re-submit a vote. They won’t start accepting requests until 9 Sep.

You can’t get there from here.

I was growling this morning because our church band was complaining that we need to just let the pandemic play out, open everything wide open, we all catch the disease and earn the fabled herd immunity. The thing these people don’t think about - well, besides the fact that that would lead to more than 70 million people dead worldwide based on current mortality rates - is that this isn’t the goddamn flu. You don’t just get sick, recover, and go on with your life. There are a number of long-term effects that are poorly understood that could leave you moderately or severely disabled for the rest of your (probably shortened) life. But, you know, COVID-19 is no big deal, because they don’t think they’re in an at-risk group.

He’s probably using an expired mask and tubing. I keep a bunch of my old tubing, nasal pillows and humidifier tanks in my art scrap pile. The resupply schedules are very aggressively designed to be profitable for the manufacturers and middle men. In the past, when I’ve been pressed and had to make do, the first thing that actually wore out was the elastic headband.

Still an inexcusable situation, and yeah if he actually can’t use the device at all that’s fucking dangerous no matter how severe his apnea actually is.

Hmmm Kasich said a prominent GOP Congressman is going to endorse Biden tomorrow. Wonder who. I really have no idea who that could be.

If it’s an active GOP Congressman, then I will thank him on Twitter.re: #228 Backwoods_Sleuth

I don’t recognize the n over ⌄ tattoo left of the Bitcoin symbol.

Anybody?

Several possibilities. One likely candidate is a pseudo-Viking affiliation:

The ancient Vikings even had their own chevron symbol. Much like how the Spartans would equip the emblem on their shields, the Vikings would also have a symbol for chevrons on their equipment. This symbol was a good luck charm to not only warriors but anyone in the presence of the chevron.

I assume it’s an active one since he’s had former GOP Congressmembers already. My former Senator backed him a long time ago. I have tons of respect for John Warner even before that and even before he endorsed HRC. Voting against Bork and refusing to support Oliver North was ballsy.

Masonic calipers & square

I thought of that but it seemed unlikely that these people would go for Masonic symbolism. It’s the right shape, though, if you compress the top element a little.

hi

We’re home.

Grr. My wife and I were sitting outside our motel room in Valentine this morning having a smoke. Out of a room on the other end comes a group of twenty-somethings (maybe fifteen) waiting for a bus to take them to the Niobrara River for a rafting trip.

They were all talking about how “old people” are ruining their fun over Covid-19, and they just need to die and get out of the way. Maybe they could spread the disease amongst people at the state park while they were there.

I said nice and loudly to my wife to make sure they could hear me, “Did I hear them tell me ‘thank you for your service? I thought that’s what they said.”

Lots of nasty looks but they shut up.

In the meantime, one final photograph. This is the Niobrara River Valley eighty miles west of Valentine on US-20 (the Mountain Time part of Cherry County), taken on our way home.

Pavone wants Catholics to vote against a fellow Catholic and for the guy advised by assholes who believe they’re not Christians.

It’s almost as if religion doesn’t belong in secular governance. Who’d’ve thought that, except the founders of the nation?

So many of these religious asshats are un-American.

An awful lot of people don’t understand how the Post Office works. So-called junk mail is one of the most profitable parts of the postal service. Bulk mailers (the correct term) label all their mail in a manner prescribed by the Post Office and pre-sort it before putting it out for delivery by 3 or 5-digit Zip Code (generally three digit for rural areas), saving the Post Office a lot of time and money.

M4A really is just the free college for all of this election. It’s a cute slogan that Bernie used to go after gullibe, idealistic lefties and not something that has any serious legislative merit and juice to it.

My parents were of a generation of free college for all (white) students…

Of course, back only about 25% of people even wanted to go to college. And 1/4 of them couldn’t meet the GPA and entrance exam requirements. If you wanted to be a tradesman, or a factory worker, the unions paid you an apprentice wage while you trained, and guaranteed health insurance and retirement. Blue collar work was a respectable middle-class income.

That free college sure made all the difference in the world to my family. As a teenager dad had cardboard in his shoes to keep hot asphalt from burning his feet through the holes. He ate 4 or 5 times a week. Mom’s family was a little better off, they ate every day (sometimes even twice a day!) and had enough winter coats that if the cousins took turns everybody could leave the house on a regular basis. But no way in hell could either of their families have saved up enough to pay for their education, and loans would have crippled their finances for most of their lives. Instead, dad became a doctor and a lawyer, mom was a lawyer, and I grew up with a swimming pool and summer camp and a horse.
