CDC Director Calls BS on Trump: COVID Vaccine Unlikely Before Next Year

Politics • Views: 20,324

Donald Trump is telling the US there will be a vaccine for COVID-19 in a matter of weeks. He’s lying again, of course, and we all know it, but here’s Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control, not mincing any words.

Top Trump administration health officials testified Wednesday that a vaccine for COVID-19 is not likely to be widely available until next spring or summer, and that wearing a mask, in the words of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield, remains “the most important, powerful public health tool we have.”

“I might even go so far as to say that this face mask is more guaranteed to protect me against COVID than when I take a COVID vaccine,” Redfield told a Senate panel on Wednesday.

Trump says vaccine is going to be ready is all the Trumpists will hear after Fox and OAN and the right wing echo chamber repeat it endlessly.

CDC Redfield’s refutation will get not nearly enough play, even though he’s the actual expert on such things.

Trump and the GOP think they can lie their way through a pandemic made exponentially worse due to their corruption, malfeasance, and cruelty.

And I’m like “who the hell are all these idiots that think we’ll be back to normal by sometime next year?”

That MIGHT have been possible (to an extent at least) if Trump hadn’t flushed everything down the toilet from the beginning, but not now.

The original vaccine estimates from back in Feb/Mar when this thing was JUST starting were 12-18 months. That means March 2021 at the EARLIEST and most likely not until Summer 2021.

And also, what about distribution?? Just because a vaccine is proven effective doesn’t mean there’s a billion doses ready to go and even if there is, there are plenty of tough ass logistics to straighten out to GET THOSE DOSES TO THE PEOPLE. Add probably another month for the vaccine to take effect until we can officially make the call of “okay, we’re good now.”

It’s only a matter of time before Trump claims that he’s going to do another round of tax cuts, with no tax bill in Congress and no actual policy. He’s just going to announce it thinking that it’ll swing voters. That’s what he tried in 2018 (and failed). He’s a one trick pony.

And the number of those “willing” is probably likely to decrease - possibly drastically - in the first few months of a Biden Administration as the RWNM gins up hysterical opposition to “the Democrat vaccine”…

(And the Q-nuts likely latching onto, and floating, some bizarre conspiracy theory about the vaccine that will make the “Bill Gates’ nanochip” nonsense look sober by comparison….)

Not just lied and suppressed the video, but lied about the entire incident, lied about what Prude did, and then tried to blame Prude for his death when it was the actions of RPD officers who caused his death.

He suffered a mental health issue, and was killed by cops.

This is an all too frequent occurrence.

There’s also reports that AG James’ office didn’t handle this appropriately either (as the AG has oversight and ability to charge officers in these kinds of officer involved deaths). No one in the chain of command looks good here. We are failing our most vulnerable citizens.

Have to say that what concerns me about the vaccine were the reports that it might be only 50% effective at reducing transmission. So instead of a vaccine that is for some period is basically 100% effective, we end up with something that will require that we continue living in a partially opened economy for an indefinite period of time. Of course, if they develop a truly effective treatment, then we may be able to resume normal life. Or maybe the disease will mutate into a far less lethal strain.

The skyrocketing case numbers in Spain and France are very concerning — but deaths there still remain low — so maybe those cases represent the mild or asymptomatic patients who formerly were not counted,

The guy across the street from me is one of those educated, low information Republicans. I didn’t try to convince him to vote for Biden because he’ll have to come to that conclusion on his own, but we got onto the virus. When we talked about all of the stuff ending, his first statement was that it would happen right after the election. I didn’t press him on it, but it sounded like he had bought into the idea that this was being set up by Democrats and all Democrats would stop going after it right after the election, kind of like Republicans did with Ebola. I told him at the earliest, I expected things to change in March of next year. And I told him that while I support agressive attempts to get a vaccine, I wanted it to be safe, which once again meant next year. And I finally told him that it wold be health care workers, and probably the rich, who would get it first.

I think I got through to him a little.

If we could immediately make half the population no longer carriers, that would significanly slow down the spread of the virus.

The annual flu vaccine is like that. I remember being bemused on hearing that after I started getting them. The idea is just to reduce the transmission rate below 1.0. That way, the disease just naturally dies out. So it’s not so much about protecting you as it is about society protecting itself.

Keep Rx below 1. Masking and social distancing can do that in the absence of a vaccine. But with enough people ignoring the rules/guidance, the Rx keeps pushing above 1, meaning we will continue to face outbreaks. NY just pushed back above 1 for first time in more than a month. That’s roughly in line with Labor Day being when the infections spread. With schools starting back up, it’s going to get rough…

A 50% effective vaccine against SARS-Cov-2 right now would be a Godsend. There will be more and better vaccines in the future but they’re years away, this disease is here right now, it spreads easily and no-one is guaranteed immune — if someone suffered a severe case triggering a serious immune reaction then maybe they’re safe from a second case but a lot of folks who got through COVID-19 with some bed rest and a couple of weeks of discomfort are ripe for Round Two. Hell, a vaccine with 30% efficacy by March next year would be cause for celebration.

Charlie Kirk is an asshole.

Teenagers, some of them minors, are being paid to pump out the messages at the direction of Turning Point Action, an affiliate of Turning Point USA, the prominent conservative youth organization based in Phoenix, according to four people with independent knowledge of the effort. Their descriptions were confirmed by detailed notes from relatives of one of the teenagers who recorded conversations with him about the efforts. WaPo

Even 50% effective will drop the rate of transmission below 1 once enough people are vaccinated, then the virus will fade out, and life return to close to normal. I’m going to keep wearing a facemask though.

Turning Point Action, whose 26-year-old leader, Charlie Kirk, delivered the opening speech at this year’s Republican National Convention, issued a statement from the group’s field director defending the social media campaign and saying any comparison to a troll farm was a “gross mischaracterization.”

“This is sincere political activism conducted by real people who passionately hold the beliefs they describe online, not an anonymous troll farm in Russia,” the field director, Austin Smith, said in the statement.

He said the operation reflected an attempt by Turning Point Action to maintain its advocacy despite the challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic, which has curtailed many traditional political events.

“Like everyone else, Turning Point Action’s plans for nationwide in-person events and activities were completely disrupted by the pandemic,” Smith said. “Many positions TPA had planned for in field work were going to be completely cut, but TPA managed to reimagine these roles and working with our marketing partners, transitioned some to a virtual and online activist model.”

The group declined to make Kirk available for an interview.

Convenient how they stop believing Covid is a hoax when it becomes a handy excuse to explain shady behavior.

Unfortunately in most English speaking countries, and America especially, mental illness is regarded as weakness and/or a lack of faith. Qualities that make the people suffering from mental illness as beneath contempt.

It’s not much better here in Canada, and as a sufferer of mental illness I can attest to that.

My personal opinion is that the isolation, both physical and cultural, is responsible for this attitude. “We’re special so we don’t have to be nice.” A fair bit of Puritanism has woven itself into our culture as well, and Puritans are not big on kindness.

Maybe you need to point out that this is a disease that is worldwide — that it’s not just Americans afflicted with it. Too many of these Trump supporters seem to think it’s something manipulated by the Democrats to defeat Trump, rather than a pandemic striking everywhere. And you could point out the countries that seemed to do really well in managing it.

Of course, if we had retained the pandemic response team, our programs to detect possible threats, and the doctors embedded in China to look for new emerging diseases, there might not be a pandemic on this order anyway. There is that infamous recording of Trump acting as though medical specialists are another part of the gig economy: See about :51 into the video: Trump Explained Why He Fired The White House Pandemic Team | NowThis

Any vaccine is going to find itself rejected by large parts of the population. It would still lower the transmission rate, but keep in mind that those idjits who reject the vaccine will also be likely to ignore or reject any other common-sense methods to reduce the spread of infections.

What we really need to get the economy and public life back in full swing is quick, reliable testing - one that produces results within minutes and can be used at all large gatherings and public events.

You’d still have to make people follow the rules on getting tested, by making people get tested, making them stay home and away from others. A small detail I wasn’t clear on: SARS-CoV-2 is the virus and COVID19 is the disease (vs SARS-CoV-1 as the virus and SARS as the disease).

I thought SARS-CoV-2 and COVID19 were interchangable.

Also, there are more than 1550 known viruses.

They haven’t had much effect on the general public up to now, I see no reason to think this will work on anyone except the hard core.

WAPO

Philip Bump: “A number of recent polls at the state level have measured both the presidential election and Senate races. If people were wary of revealing support for Trump specifically, it’s safe to assume that Trump would trail the Republican Senate candidates.”

“For the most part, though, the opposite is true.”

so if they’re participating in the poll and don’t support trump or actually lie and support biden, it would show in the poll

further (not in the article) when a pollster encounters someone who wont participate in the poll at all, they keep dialing til they get someone else - hence the polling model still works

there is no untapped market left.
and the pool of trump supporters who are also unwilling to participate in polls is far smaller than the actual true undecideds who participate.
there arent enough of them to skew all the polls.

The annual flu vaccine is like that. I remember being bemused on hearing that after I started getting them. The idea is just to reduce the transmission rate below 1.0. That way, the disease just naturally dies out. So it’s not so much about protecting you as it is about society protecting itself.

Also to reduce the severity of your illness.

Even 50% effective will drop the rate of transmission below 1 once enough people are vaccinated, then the virus will fade out, and life return to close to normal. I’m going to keep wearing a facemask though.

Good idea. The flu comes back every year.

We did assassinate the top Iranian general Qasem Soleimani at the beginning of this year. They haven’t yet really struck back, but then maybe they are watching us disintegrate under Trump and they figure there’s no need for more aggressive action.

Not that I would have expected Republicans to vote for it, but it should have been one of several articles of impeachment against the orange idiot.

I’ve wondered what medical facilities are in the vicinity of ICE detention centers. Anyone getting surgery (involuntarily) has to be going somewhere, since the centers don’t do those medical procedures.

Many ICE detention centers are out in rural areas. That’s how they end up there, because local jurisdictions are *desperate* for jobs, even these jobs. The Irwin County Detention Center is located in an area that is smack in the middle of a pentagon formed by Jacksonville, FL, Tallahassee, FL, Columbus GA, Atlanta, GA and Savannah, GA. It is the sticks.

I also looked to see if a hysterectomy could be done as an outpatient procedure and the answer is, why yes, it can be done as a day procedure if it is a so called laparoscopic or keyhole surgery. And the local hospital, Irwin County Hospital, does perform hysterectomies (doesn’t say laparoscopic or other).

irwincntyhospital.com

I still have questions about whether this is actually happening, but I am pretty darn *certain* that detainees are receiving crap medical care. If we can’t even treat jailed citizens like human beings (I’m looking at you, Arizona), what makes anyone think we’re going to treat ICE detainees any better???

So 538 has ticked over to 76-1-23 today. This seems to be on some good state polling (I don’t see now MN can be considered competitive at this point, and WI is getting there fast).

Ohio, Texas, Georgia numbers are close-ish, but I don’t really expect to see wins there unless it’s a total wipeout. PA is looking good. Florida is light blue on my internal map, but I expect we won’t know until election day.

I see the election something like this: 270towin.com

Note that Biden wins without Ohio, and without Florida. And can lose either Arizona or Pennsylvania and still get over the line. And has plenty of bonus states. Though I really don’t want him to be showing up at the EC vote with 270…
