Boris Johnson: Yay, the UK is the first country to authorize an anti COVID-19 vaccine!
Vladimir Putin: Who needs authorization — Start the vaccinations immediately!
This brings back memories of a trick Dad pulled on me.
When I was 4 years old we had dinner in our living room. TV was showing Warner Brothers cartoons. Mom bought out the dinner plates and hmmm thought it was chicken I was eating.
Bugs Bunny cartoon was on the TV. Dad said, “You know what you’re eating, Joey? You’re eating Bugs Bunny!”
I was horrified ran upstairs to my bedroom and cried thinking Mom and Dad killed Bugs Bunny. Dad went upstairs to try to calm me but I kept screaming at him…

Weren’t there reports that Russians refused to take the vaccine because they were skeptical about its safety and effectiveness?

re: #314 Barefoot Grin
That’s really something—great photos. After college a couple of friends and I met up at a friend’s uncle’s place in Minnesota in order to drive around the PNW. When driving across ND my friend was going about 100MPH saying “you can see fifty miles in front of you, it’s not like they can set a speed trap here” before a state trooper appeared behind us.
The folks who run ghostsofnorthdakota.com and ghostsofminnesota.com do a great job with their photos. I can get lost on those for hours.
Yeah, some places you can see for miles. So can the troopers. Plus, they sometimes use planes as part of the speed limit enforcement. Montana used to have no defined daytime speed limit beyond “reasonable and prudent”. Back in the 70s when federal law (loss of highway funds) set nationwide speed limit to 55mph, Montana would issue $5 fines for “unnecessary waste of natural resources” so they could keep getting federal highway funds. I had heard that some jurisdictions allowed you to prepurchase coupon books and you’d rip out a $5 coupon and hand it to the trooper if you were stopped. That, though, might be urban legend.
re: #5 🌹UOJB!
Damn but that’s a pretty bad dad fuck up.
My daughter said to me, on the way to école maternelle, so she was about 3-4 years old, “dad, is it true that father Christmas doesn’t exist?”. Impressed by her maturity I confirmed the truth. And was stuck outside the school with my daughter howling in inconsolable grief while all the other parents stared at me in disgust.

I had a friend who moved to Montana. He said the only thing that kept him from going at super high speeds were dangerous cross winds.

There is going to be a shit river of petty and large-scale corruption evidence pouring out in the next years as all this gets exposed by either prosecutors following the money or angry people with scores to settle. In Russia, the cover you get from the powerful to commit and hide your own crimes is called “krisha”, the roof. You lose that, you’re fucked. Same with Republicans now.
re: #318 Hecuba’s daughter
And this morning Trump called Kemp to ask him to overturn the results. Trump may have no interest in doing his Constitutionally required job, but he does work overtime to protect and enrich himself. Kemp has been silent over the past few days while other Republican members of his administration have stood up for justice. Kemp is a man with no morals or ethics — let’s see if this one time in his life, he will stand for the rule of law when facing pressure.
I think the Republicans’ own craven nature actually works in our favor in this case.
Because Biden won 306 electoral votes, no state in contention flipping on its own will be enough to give Donald Trump the presidency. Thus no Republican wants to be the first to possibly light their political future on fire/be the first to get an appointment with madame guillotine when they have no proof it will make a difference who in the White House come February.

Two contrary arguments —
Not if they think this will get the ball rolling and allow the coup to proceed. Or if they think this won’t make any difference so it will only help them with the base. Then if it succeeds with one, other states may decide to join in.

Then my argument would be thank goodness for Tom Wolf (Democratic Goveneror of PA) because without him engaging in this craziness it takes three states flipping their results, so once again we’re back to the argument of two people have to go “first” for this crazy coup to work.
2/ We throw people in jail for sharing state secrets with foreigners, military plans, etc. because it’s national security. But the security of the state, the republic stands prior to concealing its secrets or military plans. It’s the most central national security.

Actually that article says the envelopes with signatures were preserved.
The privacy envelopes were among the items that were also shredded—after the election was certified—but not the mailing envelopes with the signatures.
Signature matching is bullshit, the weakest authentication method known to humans. That’s why Trump is stamping his feet and demanding more signature matches, because they’re bullshit and easily exploited.

You throw out all mail-in ballots in Democratic strongholds — which heavily favor the Democrats. You know that’s what Kemp wants — his whole career has been in suppressing votes and he sounds as though he’s on team Trump.
Hopefully the Democrats are prepared to fight viciously with no hold bars to stop this.

This is the reason that self-pardons are obviously not legal. You don’t make a list of instructions and rules for the president to follow and then have the last one be “You can just ignore this and do whatever you want with no consequences if you fill out this form.”

Signature audits are impossible due to the way things work in Georgia. The signatures are verified, then detached from the ballots so that the vote itself is kept secret. This is a feature of the system, designed to prevent pay-for-vote schemes where corrupt election officials can verify that the bought voters did, in fact, vote the way they were told to.
And by “easily exploited,” I mean exploited by Trump, not exploited to commit voter fraud. Because voter fraud is virtually nonexistent in the United States, despite the lies peddled by the conservative movement for decades.

Added point: as I’ve explained during impeachment you can’t indict a sitting president because he would effectively be on both sides of the “v” as the DOJ exercises delegated presidential power under our system. The point of pardons is to avoid or repair miscarriages of justice. Since the president, at least theoretically/technically, has ultimate control of the DOJ he couldn’t be subject to such miscarriages of justice.

47% of the country is just fine with authoritarian rule as long as it secures white supremacy and/or “owning Libs.” This is especially true for the craven Republicans in Congress who for decades pretended to care about the country, service members, and national security and all the while only serve themselves personally and cynically use their constituent’s own prejudices against everyone. Fuck them all. They are traitors.
If George Will is the model of a good repug, we’re in even worse trouble than I thought.
He is desperately afraid of prison. I don’t know what he has done, but he does and he shows every sign of panic, burning whatever cred he may have once had on a long shot chance of keeping his protector in power.

Both of them. Kemp asking for something that can’t be done (since the ballots and signatures have long been separated) to try to appease Needy Amin is pretty weasely.

I’m seriously wondering if Trump’s rally tonight might turn into a riot.

Gotta say, I posted the same idea here a while back. Minus the confirmation note.
I don’t suppose your brother and I are the only people to have thought of it.
Hardly. I would assume anyone thinking about deciding on the legality of a self pardon would do so as well.
I learned today that my uncle (father’s brother, last of his generation) passed away from Covid at age 97. My cousin said he was fighting it off well, and then suddenly just couldn’t hold on any longer. We spoke every week: he was so looking forward to making 100. Walked every day, keeping as fit as possible. Damn. He was a good man.

Trump’s like a drug addict whose pills were taken away, and now he’s going around in a cold sweat, ransacking the house, desperately swallowing anything that’s vaguely pill-looking. Sad, pathetic, ridiculous. https://t.co/RGnFCbhr6n

I have no problem with the notion of a transition period. Assuming that the side transitioning out accepts that fact.
But it was clear to all that this was going to happen, Trump’s brand depends on it.
What upsets me still is how close he came to pulling it off. Without Covid, he would have won handily.
Only the record turnout is what got enough GOP operatives to see that trying to turn it for Trump was just not a viable option and stop intervening on his behalf.

In seasonally appropriate news: I actually went so far as to hang a wreath on the front door and throw some holiday lights on our little camellias out front. We used to have somewhat more robust shrubs to put lights on, but replaced them a couple years ago. I think it will take a couple more years before they don’t look a bit silly lit up-but what the heck.

This. The current situation demonstrates why a lame-duck with power is a problem.

Next weekend is the annual Christmas tree sale in our village, we will be down to fetch us a proper family tree. But I will wait for the Schmuckfest until the other kids arrive on the 19th.

I’m actually not so sure about that… take a look at the polls throughout the entire year of 2020
If Covid actually was why Biden won we would have seen some major spikes as Trump’s handling of it got worse and worse, instead the major spike in Biden’s favor happened at the tail end of September, though I’d need to go review exactly what was happening then to give better data…

Of course Biden would say these kind of things. It’s the kind of politician he learned to be, and probably his own personality is such that he wants/needs to think better of people.
But I think the people who need to hear that kind of message don’t care. All those people giving Newsom the middle finger will despise Biden for being so kind.
Trumpers like Trump because of his ugliness, not in spite of it.
Biden wants to be Presidential. But half the country despises “presidential.”
