Edited! I fucked up embedding three videos here. They are below.

A New Year video from us:

Chaski presents Raise a Cup o’ Kindness as a gift to its friends and supporters

Contemplative rather than celebratory, reflecting what we’ve lost.

The first tune is Da Day Dawn, a Shetland song adapted for transverse flute and clarsach from Stout and MaKay.

The second is two instrumental versions of Auld Lang Syne with an introduction by Bob Thomas (born in Shetland, educated at Herriot’s School, founding Strumathon player of Silly Wizard) and his glass of Highland 12. Nine minutes. Hope all of you enjoy it and pass on the link.

On 16 March, 2020, The Who declared a Pandemic. I know that the next couple of months are going to be buckets of blood and pain in the US. So for me, I’m holding off on a Happy New Year until midnight, March 15th, 2021.

Let’s see how well we do as a planet a year after announcing the beginning of a human catastrophe.

So far, I’d give the planet a D+/C- overall, and the US an F+/D-.

Night all. It’s another Stephan Pastis beginning to a new year:

A quick drop in to wish everyone a Happy New Year! Fireworks and weapons are going off here on the rural Oregon coast so the cats are hiding in a cardboard castle I built them (winter thing) while I run the portable dehumidifier next to it to drown out the chaos. My cats embrace technology for a happier life. :)

Time: 2200 hours
Date: New Year’s Eve
Location: Mendenhall Valley near Juneau, AK

The “Battle for the Mendenhall Valley” has been ongoing for the past 6 hours. Neither side is willing to surrender. From my home base in the Central Valley it appears there is extensive fighting in all directions. Very loud explosions and multiple aerial flares are coming from all sides. From the noise it seems the Dredge Lake Militia has more heavy weapons than the Riverside Brigade, who appear to only have small arms available.

Each side appears to have a sustainable supply of ammo to continue for a couple more hours.

Listening to the war on the scanner, there are no peace-keeping forces available for this area. Other battles are occurring in Downtown Juneau and on Douglas Island. At this time it is not clear who controls the Juneau - Douglas Bridge. Reports are that possession has change several time.

I have heard frontline rumors that a cease fire will be announced at approximately 0030
hours tomorrow morning.

I hope we can survive that long. The wife is pissed and the dogs are under the covers.

I will hang in to the end.

There’s a helicopter base on Douglas Island (ERA Helicopters) and multiple helicopters at the Juneau Airport. Plus the NG and Coast Guard helicopters are in Juneau.

I think the Douglas Island helicopters were sent to Hawaii for the season.

Therefore, advantage Juneau.

I think everyone is taking out their frustrations over the past year.

a) Rum (that goes well with everything)

b) Peppermint Schnapps (my grandmother also used it as a nostrum for children with colds or flu)

This site is worth posting every year or two. It was established by a Pitt Communications professor and maintained by his students. The core of it is the huge photo archive of the Department of Public Works—a great starting point for the history of PGH infrastructure. The preservation and technical quality of some of the ancient large-format shots is incredible. The site’s design lets you find locations via GIS, compare them to the spots today. I found a shot from 1950 of the Forbes St. corner where and when I used to run free.

Dr Lizardo  Jan 1, 2021 • 6:10:00am

re: #126 Florida Panhandler

Ah yes, the “KR” measurement. A good example here:

From the Big Bang through the present day, matter and dark matter in the universe are thought to have been concentrated in stars, galaxies, and galaxy clusters, and are presumed to continue to do so well into the future. Therefore, the universe is not in thermodynamic equilibrium, and objects can do physical work. The decay time for a supermassive black hole of roughly 1 galaxy mass (1011 solar masses) due to Hawking radiation is on the order of 10KR years, so entropy can be produced until at least that time. Some large black holes in the universe are predicted to continue to grow up to perhaps 10KR M☉ during the collapse of superclusters of galaxies. Even these would evaporate over a timescale of up to 10KR years. After that time, the universe enters the so-called Dark Era and is expected to consist chiefly of a dilute gas of photons and leptons.

Flag Observances for January

Citizens and businesses are encouraged to fly the American flag on all days, but especially on the following days in January 2017:

Jan 1: New Year’s Day (Federal Holiday)
Jan 18: Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King’s Birthday (observed, Federal Holiday)
Jan 20: Presidential Inauguration Day (after Presidential elections only, Federal Holiday only in the District of Columbia, Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties in Maryland, and the cities and counties of Fairfax and Arlington in Virginia)

All January flag observance days are full-staff days, unless modified by Presidential or gubernatorial proclamations.

With a few hours of daylight I was able to clear and repair the tree damage to the grow tunnel. It looked like the wreck of the Hindenburg on the ground, but everything popped at the pressure-fitted joints and the damage will cost about 5 bucks. Even the irrigation tubing came apart at the fittings. Little or no veggy destruction. So it looks like 2021 wants to be a manageable PITA.

I miss the raccoons that used to live around here. I hand raised an orphaned baby one when I was a pre-teen. The hard part was training him to be an independent guy so I could release him into the woods near our home one day. I succeeded, he even brought his new family back to the house at one point so I could meet them. We used to have a lot of bird feeders and little piles of nest building materials (my mom’s dad was a birder, built bird houses and spent hours watching them. I still have his book of birds of north america) around the yard, raccoons stole a lot of that, lol.

Our stimulusyeahrightsure deposit went in this morning. It’s enough to pay the mortgage and buy some groceries. I’m happy about that, but pissed that these assholes in DC truly think this is going to stop people from working or getting a “real job’. I truly am beginning to think that a requirement to run for office should require living in a lower middle class neighborhood and having to support a family on less than 30K a year. And no cell phone except a basic one, no internet access and an old beat up car to get around in. No access to your wealth or connections if you got them. Then talk some shit, so I can smack you in the head.

I kept trying to write something last night that would be positive and hopeful. In my 60 yrs of life I have seen and been through some shit. Homelessness, domestic abuse, dysfunctional family crap for miles and miles, and yet, this is the first year where I can’t find words to be upbeat. I’m exhausted. A few months ago, I finally got all the coloring and highlighting cut out of my hair. I am nearly completely gray now. I guess I earned all those gray hairs, and lines on my face, but damn. Our system shouldn’t be so weak that one or two people can fuck up whatever they want to by holding everything hostage. Senate rules need to be changed, no one person should be holding that much life/death power over their fellow citizens.

I really don’t think things are going to improve that much after Jan 20th. All these piecemeal measures like Executive Orders aren’t going to fix what’s broken. Not without some serious changes in the rules/laws/”gentlemen’s agreements” or whatever. I don’t know, it’s hard to be optimistic. It’s possible that our GA senate races may go toward the side of good, but I’ve had the rug jerked out from under me too many times to be able to truly believe in my heart that will actually happen. The last three years have been hell on my family. Husband can no longer work, living on a disability check, having to sell off things for any extra money, watching my husband’s health decline, realizing I may be a widow in the next 5 yrs, watching my son struggle with so much, dealing with Cleo and her issues, constantly trying to keep up with all the cleaning and cooking and care, having my birth family dump me like so much trash(for the THIRD time in my life), I’m just tired and done. I feel terribly alone sometimes.

So Happy New Year!!! LOL. At least Trump will be gone and his shitty family too. I guess that’s somewhere to begin looking forward. I am not a prayerful person, but I do pray for my fellow Lizards, Michele, Joe, all who have lost loved ones to covid or anything else, those struggling with burdens so heavy they seem immovable. And for all of us, that this year is better in ANY way from the last. What I want more than anything is for my negative fears and worries to be SUPER WRONG.

The plan was to make the states do all the hard work and blame them (especially Democratic-run states) when everything invariably went wrong.

The trouble with that “plan” is that I’d trust my Democratic run state to do a better job than, say, Alabama. There has been a rough start, but this will probably be better run in places with more involved government and the larger health systems both public and private you get in more urban areas.
Everyone for themselves doesn’t do an efficient job of getting shots into arms.

SuperCapitalism Almost every major invention ever made was by either a private company, or a single person. You leftists need to learn the difference between Corporatism/Phony Capitalism vrs REAL Capitalism. Everything your using right now was INVENTED by the private market!

Not at all true.

DARPA invented the internet and who-the-hell-knows what else. NASA invented velcro, water purifiers, a bunch of different kinds of metal alloys. The Dept of Agriculture invented/discovered hybrid seeds, gazillions of farming techniques, insecticides and herbicides. All the 20th century medical advances “invented” by the private market are built on basic research done by universities under federal grant. Jonas Salk was only able to invent the polio vaccine because he was heading a team at the University of Pittsburgh.

1. They can be undone by the next Republican Senate.
2. Allowing 50 Republicans to be able to submit bills will completely clog the Senate next session.

I’ve done quite a bit of safety and risk analysis over the years for implantable medical device companies. One thing I’ve learned is that, in general, regardless of education people are bad at understanding risk and statistics.

One time I interviewed a handful of electrophysiologists about infection associated with pacemaker implants. The conversations went like this after I did basic introduction of the topic (infection rates for de novo pacemaker implants nationwide are about 1.5% and, of those, a little over 1 per cent develop sepsis and die, blather, blather, unnecessary suffering and ridiculous costs, blather):

Me: Do you think you have an infection rate issue here?
Dr. Blood: No, of course not. We’re one of the best in the country.
Me: Well, did you have any implant related infections last year at all?
Dr. Blood: Just a couple but we easily handled them.
Me: How many implants did you do last year and does couple mean two?
Dr. Blood: We do about five implants a month and I remember three infections - two we handled with antibiotics but one we had to remove the device.
Me: I see. Do you think there’s anything you can do to prevent one of those?
Dr. Blood: Not really. As I said, we hardly have any infections and we can handle the few we do have. We’re one of the best EP groups in the country.
Me: Thanks for your time (but in my head as I’m leaving “holy f***, a 6% infection rate, 4 times the national average, one of which led to a major adverse event and, yeah, that could be a statistical anomaly, but you’re not even a bit interested in understanding that a bit better? Jeez, that’s crazy.)

Something similar happened on the Delaware and Raritan Canal here in NJ years ago. A cow or bull somehow got lose and was seen, Bigfoot-style, wandering around the bike path, but the cops could never quite catch up with it.

Well, the headline doesn’t say that either. It’s actually an issue worth considering - Trumpists have suffered severe setbacks exactly due to the courts adopting the Federalist Society approach to court access. It worked for us this time, but whether it’s a good thing overall is exactly the point.
