Spent some time feeling inferior
Standing in front of my mirror
Combed my hair in a thousand ways
But I came out looking just the same
Daddy said, son, you better see the world
I wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to leave
But remember one thing, don’t lose your head
To a woman that’ll spend your bread
So I got out, whoo
Paris was a place you could hide away
If you felt you didn’t fit in
The French police wouldn’t give me no peace
They claimed I was a nasty person
Down along the Left Bank, minding my own, whoo
Was knocked down by a human stampede
Got arrested for inciting a peaceful riot
When all I wanted was a cup of tea
I was accused, whoo
I moved on
Down in Rome, I wasn’t getting enough
Of the things that keep a young man alive
My body stunk, but I kept my funk, whoo
At a time when I was right outta luck
Getting desperate, indeed I was, yeah
Looking like a tourist attraction
Oh my dear, I better get out of here
For the Vatican don’t give no sanction
I wasn’t ready for that, no, no
I moved right out east, yeah
Listen, on the Peeking ferry, I was feelin merry
Sailing on my way back here
I fell in love with a slit-eyed lady
By the light of an eastern moon
Shanghai Lil never used the pill
She claimed that it just ain’t natural
She took me up on deck and bit my neck
Oh, people, I was glad I found her
Oh, yes I was glad I found her, woo-hoo
Wait a minute
I firmly believed that I
Didn’t need anyone but me
I sincerely thought I was so complete
Look how wrong you can be
The women I’ve known I wouldn’t let tie my shoe
They wouldn’t give you the time of day
But the slit-eyed lady knocked me off my feet
God, I was glad I found her
And if they had the words I could tell to you
To help you on the way down the road
I couldn’t quote you no Dickens, Shelley or Keats
‘Cause it’s all been said before
Make the best out of the bad, just laugh it off, ha
You didn’t have to come here anyway
So remember, every picture tells a story, don’t it
Every picture tells a story, don’t it
Every picture tells a story, don’t it, whoo
Every picture tells a story, don’t it
So we talked to our RW brother today; little of the conversation involved politics. But the part that did: he claimed people had entered the Capitol while Trump was still speaking, thereby proving that some non-Trump organization was behind the invasion. It was so clearly not Trump supporters behind the attack. And he retains belief in all the lies about a stolen election, especially the dead people voting and people voting from empty lots. And, of course, on the coronavirus front, the early nursing home deaths in NY were all Cuomo’s fault, no blame due to the incompetent federal response at the beginning of the epidemic.
And then he rants about how 2022 the GOP will sweep in and get a huge majority. It’s possible he’s right on that one — there is a strong likelihood that we might be experiencing an economic meltdown due to the continuing economic effects of the pandemic.

Within one day of last week’s attack on the Capitol, at least three states introduced legislation to criminalize protest. The bills, advanced by Republican lawmakers in Florida, Mississippi, and Indiana, do not represent new strategies designed specifically to prevent future right-wing insurrections. Rather, they draw from a set of policies that numerous state legislators introduced this summer in order to appear tough on protests against police brutality.Florida’s and Mississippi’s bills in particular represent a new brand of anti-protest laws on steroids, creating penalties for a wide array of activities, from damaging monuments to obstructing traffic. The bills include measures that could encourage harsh law enforcement responses to protests as well as provisions meant to prevent local governments from reducing police funding.
The narrower Indiana bill would broaden the definition of rioting — which the Florida bill did as well — and would criminalize camping at the Indiana state Capitol. The Mississippi bill would also allow the state to strip unemployment benefits from anyone who pleads guilty to participating in disruptive protests.

Critics warn National Guard lacks exit strategy for presidential inauguration (Duffel Blog)
“We have no metric for what success looks like,” said one high ranking officer.
WASHINGTON — More than 20,000 national guardsmen are expected to deploy to the nation’s capital to provide additional security during President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on Jan. 20, but critics warn the National Guard appears to lack an exit strategy.
“We have no metric for what success looks like,” said one high ranking officer. “Is it an hour after the man is sworn in? Is it when the protesters have all left? We just don’t know.”
The ongoing military campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq have left many questioning if this deployment to Washington has a defined objective or could be instead a so-called “Forever Civil War.”
Pentagon officials assured members of the public on Thursday the activation would be strictly limited to the events surrounding the presidential inauguration, but military watchdog groups are skeptical after observing a newly constructed Green Beans Coffee shop inside the Capitol visitors center. Green Beans Coffee is a popular cafe typically found in military bases located in forward-deployed bases in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Africa.

Trump has always screwed everyone who worked for him. He shafted contractors and businesses who fulfilled the terms of their contracts, because the only thing he and Trumpworld ever cared about was pulling one over on everyone else. It was his profit, and you weren’t allowed to take a penny more. Trump would engage in lawfare to reduce smaller businesses to nothing - because they couldn’t afford to fight Trumpworld.
Trump even fucked over his lawyers, even when they did their jobs competently.
Rudy’s a weird case, because Rudy has done a spectacularly awful job, but Trump screwing Rudy gives Rudy incentive to fight to get the money he wants or else spill the beans to avoid prison. Weird dynamics here, but nothing surprising. Trumpworld loyalty always flows to Trump and nothing goes the other way.

“…The concern of Nakasone and others, current and former officials said, is that the White House is seeking to “burrow” Ellis into the job in violation of a long-standing policy that prevents embedding political personnel into career civilian positions prior to a change in administration.
Nakasone recently got a verbal indication from the Office of Personnel Management that the policy did not apply to intelligence community employees, according to one U.S. official. On Thursday, he requested a written legal opinion on that point, according to two officials. He has not yet received that written opinion, the officials said.
Ellis previously was chief counsel to Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), a staunch Trump supporter and former chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. Ellis joined the White House in 2017, when he became a lawyer on the National Security Council and in 2019 he was elevated to senior director for intelligence.”

Depends on the cutoff time where you are, but here in Nashville, it’s generally about 9 PM CST the night of the draw.
PowerBall boffins expect today’s drawing to be 29.9% coverage (of the possible combinations), which means a lot of ticket buys.
Also means a good chance of someone winning it.
Which is why it is very rare to get jackpots higher than tonight’s $640M.

Things my mom, a grocery worker, endured 2020:
1) Being slapped for running out of TP 🧻
2) Called a B*tch almost daily
3) Spit on by anti-mask
4) Breaking up fist fights
5) Covid sanitation policies
Yet people still don’t think she should make $15 per hour.

OK, I will freely claim absolutely NO expertise in the details of Federal hiring laws, but ISTR reading somewhere that many of the Trump Admin’s spate of “last-minute” appointments were being done to insert (or TRY to insert) loyal wingnuts into various administrative positions that fall under some sort or other of “civil service” protection, so that they can’t just “be fired”. Or at least not as easily as the “political” appointees.

That has to do with Trump’s executive order regarding the Civil Service.

“Acting” director circumventing normal chain of appointment. I’d think Joe/Kamala would have a good case.
That EO up there allows any director (acting or not) to circumvent normal federal hiring rules and allows that director to hire anyone he or she wants.
Since directors are normally political appointees, that means they can hire partisans rather than those actually qualified for the job.
That EO was written on October 20, 2020, and it predicted at the time he would do precisely this (install hacks in various departments such as VOA, DOD, NSA, &c).

It’s the usual Repub concern trolling, in this case the idea that the public ceremonies be “postponed” due to the danger posed by the pandemic to attendees.

So I still have time! Being serious for a moment, I do occasionally buy a ticket as a passport to dreamland.
For the first time in 2 years, I purchased lottery tickets yesterday. Told the store clerk I was wasting some money on the Megamillions. Maybe I’ll get tickets for the Tuesday game — or not. As you say, it’s fun to fantasize for a few hours about a prize that few of us will ever see. As long as it’s money you can spare, there’s probably no harm.

This is my plan as far as gambling in general. Mrs. Fish has never been to Vegas (I have, once, but as a teenager so I couldn’t participate in any activities) and would love to go. I told her the ground rules: We’ll set up a budget. There will be no deviating from that budget; once we’ve lost that money, we’re done, period. It will be treated as spending money for the purposes of accounting. If we come away with some wins, or less losses than the budget allowed, then good for us.

The talk about “delaying” the inauguration started only in the last couple weeks. And it wasn’t started due to “concern” over the pandemic, it was started as a way to respond to people pointing out that any “fraud” concerns would be moot on Jan 20th. So they can feel free to spare me the BS about it being due to the pandemic.

That’s a solid strategy. I’m not a gambler, so walking through the casinos with the Mrs. was only to show her the sights on the Strip and downtown. If you’re going to spend money in Vegas, do it with the shows and food. They’ve got Broadway quality shows and acts, and there’s a seemingly endless supply of good restaurants.
We are partial to the Hugo’s Cellar at the Four Queens Casino on Freemont St. if you want a nice steakhouse experience that goes old school. There’s also the free stuff, like watching the fountains at the Bellagio like Danny Ocean or Treasure Island or the Mirage volcano or the lights on Freemont St.
Or drive out to Valley of Fire State Park or further out to Zion NP or Grand Canyon. :)

Doubt I’ll go to Las Vegas again for just Las Vegas. The last few times it’s just been a convenient place to get somewhere else like Death Valley or Zion. Actually, quite a bit of scenic stuff not too far from Vegas if that’s your thing. Besides Death Valley and Zion, there’s hiking at Red Rock Canyon, Mt Charleston, Valley of Fire SP, and Snow Canyon SP within two hours and kayaking Black Canyon below Hoover Dam is a way fun diversion from all the noise and neon. Road trip up US93 and catch Valley of Fire and Cathedral Gorge and other state parks up to Great Basin National Park with a side trip on the ET highway or along the NV part of the Loneliest Road in the US (US50).
re: #151 lawhawk
The Grand Canyon I didn’t get to see, but we did drive out to the Hoover Dam, because my dad has been a civil engineer for decades and what engineering nerd could pass up an opportunity to see one of the greatest engineering wonders of the world? I admit it gave me vertigo to see the drop into the river bed on the far side of the dam, but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience overall.

As for gambling - this should be your entertainment/discretionary budget. I don’t go to movies (even when the theaters were open), I don’t go to fancy restaurants.
The lotteries are my entertainment. (Besides whatever I can find on Youtube, etc.)

Chef Jose Andres deserves a medal for what he has done all over the world.
I think we’re going to split our “stimulus” money between a local food bank and World Central Kitchen since we are in the fortunate position of not needing the money.
We had a discussion with Mr. C.’s sister and brother-in-law this afternoon about whether the stimulus should have gone to people who don’t need it. We were on the side of it being easier and faster to send it to everyone and many of us who don’t need it will just send it on to food banks and the like.
BTW, Vegas pays out much much better on their games, than do the state lotteries.
The state lotteries are horrible for payouts. Really really bad.
Most casinos, whether Vegas or your local outfit, pay out pretty well on their games because they know they are in competition with each other.

Yeah, I’m not a Vegas fan, but there is lots of cool stuff in NV. Great Basin NP is amazing (IMHO) Spring can be gorgeous, but if you want to go all the way up Wheeler Peak and see the Bristlecone Pines, you need to wait for the snow to have melted. And therein lies the problem with the Intermountain West-massive elevation changes to see the cool stuff so it will be too hot or too cold (or both) for part of your trip.
I’d love to do the Hoover dam tour sometime.
