Yo-Yo Ma’s #Songsofcomfort: “El Cant Dels Ocells” (Song of the Birds) - Catalan Folk Song

Music • Views: 22,656

YouTube

Last May I was in Lima, Peru, where I met some of the amazing artists of the Shipibo-konibo tribe. I learned how their spiritual practices, painting, and singing transmit their profound knowledge of the Amazon across generations. When they first moved to the city, they settled together in Cantagallo, a densely packed neighborhood in the heart of the capital. Like so many, the Cantagallo community is facing tremendous challenges today. This is for them, and for the many millions who don’t have the luxury of distance.
El cant dels ocells (Song of the Birds) #songsofcomfort
🇵🇪

This video was originally released on May 20, 2020, as part of Yo-Yo Ma’s #SongsOfComfort project, which was launched at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic to provide comfort in a time of anxiety and fear. The project inspired thousands of people around the world to upload their own songs of comfort in the months that followed.

Repeated from the previous thread, as this is important to me, on “low education Trump voters.”

re: #213 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

Same with me. That’s just a reframing of the “economically anxious” argument.

The number of people in my town with only a high school education or lower is three. The same three who did not vote for Donald Trump. (Five of the university-educated also voted for Joe Biden, and three others for Jill Stein and two for Gary Johnson.)

It would take no effort for conservative propagandists to turn that right around and say “See, it’s the Democratic voters who are uneducated: They don’t know any better.”

The correct answer is not education, or age, or other determinants. It is “fascists,” “racists,” &c.

I seem to recall that numerous key posts went unfilled under Trump because he could not find qualified people willing to take them.

Yeah, Sasse says all the right things here, but (even giving him the benefit of assuming that he may be serious - always chancy with Republicans) - when he says:

I have a sinking feeling as to exactly what choice about half of all GOPers will make, (and they won’t like Ike)…

I don’t give him the benefit of the doubt, as he’s one of my senators.

He has consistently voted with Trump; he voted against both witnesses and conviction in February, he knew exactly what he was doing.

All he’s doing now is trying to cover his butt.

Looks like the Republic of Ireland is following the example of Scotland. From the Irish Mirror via The Star: Government says Donald Trump won’t be allowed jet into Ireland to play golf

Speculation has been mounting that Trump could make a last minute trip to his hotel at Doonbeg, Co Clare, ahead of President-Elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20.

It comes after Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon warned that Trump is not welcome in her country to play golf, as the country enters a new strict COVID-19 lockdown.

And now The Star has learned that the Irish Government also won’t be allowing Trump, who is said to want to flee the US, to use golf as an excuse to come here — amid a global pandemic.

In a statement to this paper, a spokesperson for the Government confirmed that anyone flying into Ireland, including Trump, can only come here for essential purposes.

There’s nowhere else on the British Isles where Donald Trump has a golf course.

When I mention that countries in Asia, such as South Korea and Vietnam, are doing far better at controlling COVID, our RW brother laughs and says (approvingly) it’s because they bar others from entering the country. There is something to be said about closing borders when a high contagious air-borne disease is rampaging throughout the world. It’s difficult to control it in your own nation if you admit others from elsewhere, where the disease is not controlled.

This was the case over the nine (count ‘em, 9) discarded ballots that the Trumpsters were claiming were absolute, indisputable proof-positive of vote-rigging in PA.

So with the ones John Fetterman dug up, this makes, what? A whole dozen or so “bad” votes? Out of 6.9million cast?

Idea from a letter to the editor at electoral-vote.com

R.S.B. in Ventura, CA, writes: The biggest gift Chuck Schumer could give President Biden would be to adjourn the Senate to a date at least 10 days beyond the date of the adjournment. By adjourning the Senate for 10 days, it would allow President Biden to appoint all 1,000+ Executive Branch Secretaries and political appointees that require Senate confirmation on the day of adjournment to Recess appointments, with the intention of having the Senate confirm all 1,000+ appointees within 300 days of the recess appointment, or before the current session adjournment at the end of the year. This requires a concurrent resolution with the House, which Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) can provide, and a majority vote of those Senators present, with no debate allowed. Amendments are allowed but can be easily defeated. Due to the extraordinary situation this country finds itself, as unconventional as this approach would be, it would be warranted to prevent any obstruction by the opposition of any and all appointees Biden needs on the 21st of January

Will say it again: modern government needs skilled professionals whose careers last longer than any one administration. They are needed for continuity along with expertise and cannot just be swapped out each go-around. And truly qualified people are in short supply, which is not the case with lackeys, yea-sayers and political hacks

They have to think of the nation’s interests beyond the interests of whichever President they are serving under.

Is “Billionaire Joe” related to “Governor Pete”?

Yes. Joe Ricketts is the founder of TD Ameritrade. Pete Ricketts is one of his three sons, who became a billionaire by working at (wait for it) TD Ameritrade.

Joe Ricketts also owns the Chicago Cubs. He also owns High Plains Bison, which sells bison meat at Wrigley Field.

In September 2017, Ricketts wrote, “I believe unions promote a corrosive us-against-them dynamic that destroys the esprit de corps businesses need to succeed.”

Fuque workers succeeding. They are “human capital stock.”

His group Taxpayers for Common Sense successfully targetted and ended earmarks in 2010.

He also served on the Koch’s American Enterprise Institute board. In 2012, the New York Times wrote about a publication Joe Ricketts wrote entitled “The Defeat of Barack Hussein Obama: the Ricketts Plan to End His Spending for Good.”

His daughter Laura distanced herself from the family, working as a bundler for the Democratic Party.

He has a philanthropist organisation which funds training teachers in poor countries; in the United States, like our governor, he wishes to abolish public education.

I just watched Beau’s latest video and I usually like him but he missed today’s target by a mile. He was bitching about how Biden’s only platform during the election was “I’m not Trump”. Biden’s policies are definitely not Trump, but Biden was also providing some strong indicators about what his platforms would be. It wasn’t hard to know where he stands and what he wants to do. He was making policy videos in his basement.

Beau has stated in the past how much he dislikes Biden. I hope his knees don’t get all jerky now that Biden is in.

How will you sign up? A state website is under development but won’t be ready until later this month. As officials acknowledge the slow website rollout, local health departments are stepping in with temporary online forms to bridge people to the as yet unveiled system. But the new state site will be the focus within weeks, perhaps rendering those forms moot.

When? Soon for the next group — as early as Feb. 1 in Douglas County. The first people ages 75 and up already have been vaccinated in western Nebraska. But it might be May or June for much of the general public.

For all the publicity over the initial rollout, the slow flow of vaccine into the state remains the biggest problem.

and

In North Platte last weekend, a community clinic for the 75-plus group left some seniors in line outside for three hours, and people with limited mobility had to climb steps.

Although the state is placing a lot of emphasis on its forthcoming website — and the ability of seniors having the internet savvy to access it — officials say they will have a phone system to supplement vaccine registration.

More questions than answers as Nebraska gears up for biggest vaccination campaign in history (Scottsbluflf, Nebr. Star-Herald)

QAnon and Trump actually won the election feel to me that they have if we don’t stop it the potential to turn into the Protocols of Elders of Zion and the stab in the back legend for our times. It feels like we have lost so many people to a basic reality. I don’t expect conservatives to agree with me on issues. I do expect a basic reality. And the basic reality has been that from the start Trump has repeatedly attacked the democratic process. He was literally pulling a heads I win, tails you lose back in 2016 where he said as he did now four years later “If I lose it is fraud.” We’re never going to eliminate conservatism as an ideology. The problem is what it means to be a conservative now in 2021 is to be inherently anti democratic. I’m not defending Trump’s elected predecessors by a long shot here but it is the difference between a 50% and a 0 on a test to use an analogy.

I’ve felt anger, sadness, confusion, and uncertainty a lot the past year but especially now. Wasn’t only a month ago that they scoffed at the idea of a coup attempt. Well what we saw last week was a coup attempt. We went full fucking circle from 9/11. Letter from my Republican state senator to the Star-Herald

STEVE ERDMAN: Move Game and Parks to Sidney

How convenient, Senator, that Sidney is in your own district.

He touts five reasons for this, four of which are horeshit. The fifth (lots of office space since Cabela’s was purchased by Bass Pro Shops and they closed the main Cabela’s office building) almost makes sense, if Game & Parks already didn’t have office space in Lincoln (you know, where the seat of government is),

He also uses the phrase “you can smell the taxes” (regarding those evil civil servants who work in Lincoln and spend their money in Lincoln and Omaha). Without a shred of irony, he has no problem with the same civil servants spending tax money in Sidney or Bridgeport.

So moving a large state agency to a town of 6,000 people is just the solution for this.

Yes, New York can serve papers on someone anywhere in the country. What they can’t do is send officers to arrest him in another state, but they can coordinate with the local police department and court system in Florida to have him arrested and extradited to New York to stand trial.

I understand the feeling and the need for a break. After Obama won, I took a four month sabbatical from even looking at all political blogs to detoxify myself from years of Pajamanoid brainwashing.

Outside of that break, I’ve been trying to keep myself “up to the minute” with the twists and turns of apocalyptic American political craziness since September 2001. After almost 20 years, I’m exhausted. I’m not 35 anymore, or 42 for that matter, and the last four years of the Trump nightmare has taken its toll.

I’ve toyed with the idea of again taking a multi-month break from online life to decompress and detoxify, to again regain some sense of equilibrium.

For some reason, though, I don’t think it will be as easy as the last time.

NSA head attorney needs, obviously, a Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Intelligence (TS/SCI) clearance with access to a lot of compartments. Criminal activity and questions on allegiance to the United States (like support for an insurrection) is grounds for denial of clearance, where you do get to sit in a little room in Northern Virginia for however long it takes to go through the administrative procedures (which can easily be over a year). So anybody who has anything solid on this guy, drop a dime on him to the FBI.

Here’s a current list of _current_ plans for DC Inauguration related closures. I would guess that this list can change at a moment’s notice.

Additionally, while I have lived in the area for many decades, I do not always remember what roads are one way in what direction at what time; nor what turns are permitted and when. Let alone who can park on what street at what time. Nor will I be able to remember all of these changes let alone the ones that are enacted after this list was compiled.

I remember that generally having LEO (Law Enforcement Officer) attention in a time of tension is usually not a good thing. Nor is getting attention from trouble-makers generally a good thing.

I think that I will not venture into DC the next few days.

Would refusing to do one’s job in accordance with the Biden policy agenda constitute cause? I don’t know but I’m thinking maybe, since that agenda eventually becomes simply one’s supervisor saying “do this, and do it this way.” If the magat is clever enough to avoid direct insubordination by refusing and instead chooses to just do a piss-poor job of it, wouldn’t the resulting terrible job performance also count as cause?

All kidding aside, I really do not see any major pressing reason for the KC Chiefs or the Golden State Warriors to change their names. Those words have means outside of references to Native Americans good or bad. Chief and Warrior are not even native terms. They are terms white people used for them and always have had other meanings as generic terms to describe someone who leads and someone who fights. Remove any mascots or symbolism that’s problematic, rename Arrowhead Stadium, and move on. KC could change the symbol to a locomotive or something and you could put a Klingon on the damn GSW logo.

Altanta Braves on the other hand, harder to argue this.

Depending on where they live, having someone deliver groceries (Instacart, Shipt) is an option. We even have those services here, where we don’t have food delivery services like Grubhub/Doordash.

Oh, he could absolutely do delivery, they live in south east Massachusetts, it isn’t like they are out in the boonies. I’m sure there is a stop&shop within a mile of his house that will either deliver directly or through peapod.

I hope Biden gets the whole news cycle for a few days after the inauguration.
But I have a hunch that one of the big stories will be the avalanche of court cases filed regarding Trump the moment Biden is sworn in from both the feds, states and private companies since the date on the paper, and the order of cases might be important, especially if it is suspected that there isn’t enough money to satisfy all the claims.

We will see in a few days.

I have been thinking about QAnon, their delusions, and my relationship to this site. I love being here and getting news and everything else, but it has consumed me needing to be so up-to-the-minute. I blame Trump and Republicans for that, but I also realize that I won’t stop unless I take a break and get through some withdrawal symptoms. So, probably starting on Thursday, I will need to sign off here for a bit for mental health reasons.

Last night I was thinking about whether my LGF use case was changing after January 20th. Hopefully I will not need to spend so many hours doomscrolling through different social media. And it is time to start planning for the beginning of spring yardwork season. Plus there are a number of projects that I want to move closer towards completion.

I do think that LGF will remain a primary source for me.

I had heard that many organizations are facing this same issue. Somewhere I read that MSNBC was talking to all their leads about the direction of the network after January 20th. Lincoln Project has already announced their intended post inaugural direction. I have no doubt that this is playing out in a lot of places.

But yes, the current administration was, essentially, a serial abuser. And many would benefit from a breather to do some healing.

Green Bay drafting a quarterback last year lit a fire under Rodgers. That offense is operating with tremendous precision. Would love to see a repeat of Super Bowl I - which officially was known as the AFL-NFL World Championship Game. Fun fact about that game: There were two second half kickoffs because NBC - which had the AFL contract - was not out of commercial when the OK to kick off was given by CBS - which had the NFL contract.

I just heard from my wingnut sister; she’s still all-in on “Antifa did all the damage”. She tells me that the plot to kidnap and kill the Michigan governor wasn’t a real danger, just some silly LARPers, that if they’d really wanted to do such a thing they’d have done it. Because the right wing is so well-trained, so disciplined, if they were serious about they’d have achieved their aims.

Also, that no police anywhere have done anything wrong. And “defund the police” has them feeling so embattled we’re lucky they all don’t just quit their jobs and go home to protect their families. Same with the military; because Antifa is the real danger.

No such luck. There’s always an election going on somewhere.

Virginia and New Jersey have gubernatorial elections this year.
ballotpedia.org

There are 748 executive seats spread across 13 distinct types of offices in the United States. Of the 13 executive offices, only seven exist in all 50 states: governor, attorney general, superintendent of schools, insurance commissioner, agriculture commissioner, labor commissioner and public service commissioner.

Other common offices include lieutenant governor, secretary of state, treasurer, controller, auditor and natural resources commissioner.

April 6 is the Consolidated Election in Cook County, Ill. About 700 school board candidates are on the ballot for 145 seats. Municipal seats are up all over the state.

Statewide in Illinois is the Consolidated Primary election on February 23 for municipal candidates.

re: #230 Mattand

I found that my MSNBC viewings have dropped off a cliff, because they were basically repeating everything I had read about during the day. I really am not learning anything new when I watch them.

I’ll probably keep up the same reading pace after Tuesday, though. I have a feeling I’m going to be dealing with a lot of “Why hasn’t Biden solved four years’ worth of disasters in 100 days????” bullshit from conservative and ‘independent’ acquaintances.

I agree, there will probably be a lot of silliness and invented silliness from the various media. Much of it, I will view as trial balloons by anonymous republican operative sources. Essentially throwing plates of crap against a wall to see what might stick.

As you point to, Trump provided a lot of content. Which the media loved because it brought in a lot of terrified viewers. Going back to quiet competence and non-life threatening activities will be a difficult thing for the media.

I also agree that MSNBC rarely matches the quality of raw information provided by the many alert and knowledgeable lizards here.

I use MSNBC for a couple of things…

I have generally found Rachel Maddow, in particular, very useful when she focuses for a whole segment on a particular issue. It reduces some of the assembly I would ordinarily have to do on my own.

I also have found useful the fact that network has access to a good list of the movers and shakers in Congress. This provides, at least for me a more complete understanding of key players’ views. I suspect that MSNBC will also have good access to the Biden Administration.

Finally, I have found that I can concentrate on making dinner whilst half listening to the shows.

I just finished working my 2020 income taxes.

My federal taxes went UP compared to 2019 and my refund went WAY DOWN…

Meanwhile Coworkers are pissed off about the FICA whammy since Trump stopped FICA withholding for Federal employees and now folks will pay double the FICA tax PLUS penalties until they are caught up…

I’m one of the lucky ones who knew Reagan was full of shit when he changed the Federal Employee Retirement System in 1984. I did not switch to it, kept my old Civil Service plan which spared me from Trump’s Stop FICA withholding scam!

My big problem with Maddow is that she gets stuck in these goto loops where she rephrases the same point five different ways, while the same 8 seconds of video is repeated ad nasuem during the segment.

That said, she’s by far the best journalist on TV. It’s not even close. That’s why it’s so painful to know that Chuck Todd is somehow her boss.

IIRC, the idiot who had his feet up on Pelosi’s desk stole a document and claimed he left a quarter behind, because that somehow made it a legal transaction.

As a reminder, this is a guy in his late 50’s, barely a few years older than me, navigating this world with the mentality of an 11 year old.

In a perfect world, all of these fuckheads would get 10 years minimum with no chance of parole for Jan 6th.

What’s even better is the “document” he stole was a piece of mail. Never, ever piss off a postal inspector. You’ll find yourself in prison for a long, long time.

I haven’t been on regularly as much though still engaged with the news. It makes me feel all sorts of emotions. I’ve felt anger, sadness, confusion, and uncertainty a lot the past year but especially now. I’m not someone who is saying I told ya so about Trump, it’s more like a silent anger at the people who has supported this madness without question and disparaged people like us. Wasn’t only a month ago that they scoffed at the idea of a coup attempt. Well what we saw last week was a coup attempt. We went full fucking circle from 9/11. Those terrorist assholes on the Capitol succeeded where the hijackers of 93 could not.

I had noticed that you hadn’t been contributing as much to the conversation but hope you will be resuming your regular discourse here. We are heading into unchartered waters — a post-Trump era, with a Democratic President and Democrats in charge (barely) of both Houses and at least 60 million people inflamed by lies spewed by the President and his enablers about the legitimacy of the election and the character of the incoming administration.

On CNN, William Cohen just compared the New Yorker footage of the siege to scenes from World War Z — where those infected with the virus stormed the walls everywhere. He said we need to be angry about what’s happening to our country — that there is a moral rot descending on our country.

Let’s hope that this virus loses its potency over the next few months or our nation may not recover from this fascist interlude.

Record gun sales leading to ammunition shortages in Lincoln, elsewhere

The tumult and uncertainty of last year led a record number of people to purchase firearms in the U.S., and that’s leading to a shortage of ammunition.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation performed nearly 39.7 million firearm background checks last year, 11.3 million more than in 2019.

Not all those background checks were for firearm sales, but data from the National Shooting Sports Foundation suggests sales last year hit 21 million, a 60% increase over 2019 and 34% more than the previous record.

Kevin Bahr, manager of Nebraska Gun in Lincoln, said there have been similar demand spikes in the past, such as after the Sandy Hook school shooting in 2012, but the difference is how long it has lasted this time.

Bahr said demand for firearms and ammunition spiked after the coronavirus pandemic started, and it has been pretty high ever since.

“…A pro-Trump nonprofit group called Women for America First hosted the “Save America Rally” on Jan. 6 at the Ellipse, an oval-shaped, federally owned patch of land near the White House. But an attachment to the National Park Service public gathering permit granted to the group lists more than half a dozen people in staff positions for the event who just weeks earlier had been paid thousands of dollars by Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign. Other staff scheduled to be “on site” during the demonstration have close ties to the White House.
…..

Maggie Mulvaney, a niece of former top Trump aide Mick Mulvaney, is listed on the permit attachment as the “VIP Lead.” She worked as director of finance operations for the Trump campaign, according to her LinkedIn profile. FEC records show Maggie Mulvaney was earning $5,000 every two weeks from Trump’s reelection campaign, with the most recent payment reported on Nov. 13.

…………

The AP reviewed social media posts, voter registrations, court files and other public records for more than 120 people either facing criminal charges related to the Jan. 6 unrest or who, going maskless during the pandemic, were later identified through photographs and videos taken during the melee.

The review found the crowd was overwhelmingly made up of longtime Trump supporters, including Republican Party officials, GOP political donors, far-right militants, white supremacists, off-duty police, members of the military and adherents of the QAnon myth that the government is secretly controlled by a cabal of Satan-worshiping pedophile cannibals.

I think I may have reached the final straw with my right wing Trumpist friend. In the midst of a conversation where he, apropos of nothing, decried the “hypocrisy” of condemning the Capitol Terrorist attack on 1-6 when there “wasn’t a peep in the lamestream media about BLM burning and looting” last summer, he also said that “blacks have never had it better in America,” and cited racial quotas, free education, social engineering in every media source - see any commercials without blacks in them?” and it goes downhill from there.

He is also certain that ANTIFA was behind the 1-6 attacks and not Trump supporters since conservatives always have peaceful and respectful protests.

I just can’t even…

I’ve known the guy for more than 30 years, but he’s a cultist. He needs deprogramming. I’m muting him indefinitely.

Barrett will have to have some kind of home crisis to make her think outside the confessional.

The pastor burrito is my go-to item at a local restaurant. It’s always the thing I want.

re: #328 thedopefishlives

I have not. We’ve been through Inuyasha, the original Dragon Ball, and 1-1/2 seasons of Death Note so far, plus a few others.

Nobody asked, but I’m old school - Gatchaman and Space Battleship Yamato, and all that. The first season of 21st century reboot of Yamato (SBY2199) was good. (I didn’t care much for 2202).I

Assuming that you’re streaming, which service are you using? I’ve rested my subscriptions to Crunchyroll and Funimation for a bit.

I got on the Funimation train. Netflix has some, Hulu has an entire section dedicated to dubs, which is nice. That’s where we found Inuyasha.

I do love a good al pastor burrito - I suspect the pineapple wasn’t a bad addition (at least it’s not French fries). I usually gravitate toward beans & rice and lettuce and jalapenos - just the way I like a burrito - but al pastor is one of the first meat varieties I choose, then carnitas, then steak & prawn, then chili verde, then tofu, then chicken unless there’s a burrito stuffed with a chile relleno option …that’s fuckin’ heaven.

We watch the dubs because we like to still be able to catch the action when we are interrupted by fishspawn, and not have to focus on the subtitles. Finding the Hulu section, and Funimation having like 3/4 of their library as dubs, was a godsend.

My refund is about the same as it was. I think I adjusted my withholdings this year to make sure.

Ours should be ok since MrBWS got laid off (May 7, 2020) when these shenanigans were starting up.
OTOH, his estimated Social Security monthly benefit (which starts in May 2021) took a big hit since he’s been unemployed since then.

I like it when either option is available. I prefer original audio with subtitles, but there are times when I just cannot give subtitles undivided attention.

I’m not sure if non-English content on Hulu and Netflix have that ability, or if I’m just stuck with one or the other.

I think they do, but it’s specific to a few shows. Most of them are one or the other.

Stick with the originals, folks. Even when they’re campy, they’re better than this.

Something just struck me as I was thinking of this further.

There are so many places and things I want to see in the world but will not because of the politics involved in the places. Ruins of Babylon. Pyramids of Giza. Petra. Jerusalem. Hagia Sophia. Mohenjo Daro. Great Wall of China. Forbidden City. Ruins of Great Zimbabwe. Samarkand. Red Square.

Then I though, “You know if I wasn’t already in the US and a white male who can be ignored by the crazies… I sure as fuck would be adding things in the US onto that same list, for the same reasons now. No Grand Canyon, Carlsbad Caverns, Hoover Dam, Mounds at Cahokia…”

FUCK.

January 6th WAS a wake-up call, just not the one the Trumpers anticipated. The law-enforcement response in the days afterward, along with their friends and relatives turning in many of their number to the authorities has shown that they don’t have the popular support they thought they had, and that the pass for their lawlessness their whiteness and professed support of Trump and “the Blue” gavr them has limits.

That’s the part that’s funny to me. They are so isolated in their infobubble that they came home and didn’t realize how abhorrent they had become to the people closest to them, who promptly turned them in.

“Back the Blue” is pretty hollow after an assault on cops that killed one of them. It just goes to show that the “Blue Lives Matter” movement was always about white supremacy, just like we thought.
