Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Jan 22, 2021 • 7:45:24pm

Repost from downstairs:

DES MOINES, Iowa - The jackpot for the Mega Millions lottery game has grown to $1 billion ahead of Friday night’s drawing after more than four months without a winner thanks to bad luck, poor odds and reduced play partially blamed on the coronavirus pandemic.

It’s only the third time a lottery jackpot has grown so large, but much has changed since the last time such a big prize was up for grabs in 2018. The odds of winning a jackpot remain the same — incredibly small — but for a variety of reasons fewer people are playing Mega Millions or Powerball, the two lottery games offered in most of the country.

And even as the huge Mega Millions prize and a $731.1 million Powerball jackpot won Wednesday by a single ticket sold in Maryland have juiced sales for the games, Maryland lottery director Gordon Medenica noted: “We’re not out of the woods yet.”

Medenica acknowledged sales were dramatically lower before the pandemic, and they tanked even further in the spring and summer.

As I’ve noted for months here now. The sales are way down.

Which means the revenues for the states are way down.

Combine that with other pressures against state revenues, one thing that has been avoided by Republican politicians and Trump is that states and local government are going to need help.

We are not in good economic times, and that has been true for a while.

Trump’s bluster covered up for the real systemic issues we have.

And his marks just repeat his claims. Still. And they will continue, because they cannot believe that they are the marks that they are.

From previous link:

Still, someone always ultimately wins, and it happened again after Wednesday night’s Powerball drawing when a single ticket sold at a convenience store in the small community of Lonaconing, Maryland, hit all six numbers. The winner can take a $716.3 annuity paid over 30 years or a cash prize of $546.8 million.

That part of Maryland is the Cumberland region, Trump territory, and Jesus-land.

Whenever I see winners in such locals, I fear that the local pulpit-pimp will convince the winner to tithe to pulpit-business.

Hank Aaron Never Forgot How America Treated Him. We Shouldn’t, Either

It didn’t matter how many home runs Hank Aaron was able to hit. He endured endless racism inside and outside the ballpark.

STEPHANIE APSTEIN5 HOURS AGO

Years ago, after one of the most illustrious careers in the history of the sport, Hank Aaron donated all his memorabilia to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. His 1957 World Series ring; the bat that struck his 3,000th hit, in ‘70; his Presidential Medal of Freedom, awarded by George W. Bush in 2002—they all rest now in Cooperstown, N.Y. Aaron, who died on Friday at 86, kept only one collection for himself: the boxes of racist hate mail he received.

Aaron never forgot how America treated him. America shouldn’t, either.

The winner can take a $716.3 annuity paid over 30 years or a cash prize of $546.8 million.

If I were to win that, I’d take the annual payments because then I’d have a year to realize that I’d hired a swindling crook to manage my money and could hopefully get the fuck away from him before I received the next allotments.

Unfortunately, I’m 66 so it would be stupid to take the money over 30 years.

I can tell Biden knew him. Henry preferred to go by Henry. Very nice statement. I can tell already that Biden’s tributes will be thoughtful and genuine. Not a big bar to cross but Henry Aaron is a legend. He was the Home Run king as I fell in love with the game and just an amazing person. I read a biography of him last winter.

The Senate’s hands aren’t exactly clean in this either.

They might think they can thread the needle and get rid of Trump ans survive, but they might be underestimating Trump’s capability - and willingness - to punch below the belt. And you know Trump can implicate a good chunk of the GOP Senate (and House) if he feels like they’re trying to screw him.

Prior to that, I was paying the student loan of my ex-wife for the University of South Florida while I was in the Navy.

The Republican long-term plan of starving universities and pushing education costs on people who cannot afford them needs to end.

When my mother graduated from Michigan State University, she had no debt. The Reagan mantra of “greed is good” needs to die in a fire. I’ve spent a fuquetonne of money on college and never benefited from a single class.

It could be Schumer performing a slow-mo shiv on the GOP. It’s sure looking like holding the trial in February is a good thing now. Moreover, that allows more information to come out. Hence all the bad-faith squealing from the GOP about “unity” instead of holding the trial. If conservatives didn’t have bad faith they’d have no faith at all.

I imagine a lot of people aren’t going to be sleeping well. One not-well educated Democrat out here on the High Plains believes that Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer know a lot more than they’ve told publicly.

As for trials with a sympathetic conservative on a jury, a commission on the order of the JFK Assassination commission or the Church Commission seems to be in order here, to bring out all this into public. Let’s see how many sympathetic conservatives we have then versus people who are suddenly “independents.”

Unity should begin with a formal apology on behalf of all or at least the vast majority of Congressional Republicans for continuing to perpetuate the lie that Trump either won the election or that the results remain in doubt and so the legitimacy of Biden’s presidency.

Until that first step is taken, any calls for “unity” should be treated as the cries of sore losers demanding they be given back power that they lost fair and square.

My Republicypher Adrian Smith with his opening salvo of “unity” on his official House page:

The events of last Wednesday were nothing short of horrific. I am appalled at what I saw and fully support the prosecution of every participant and planner of the uprising. Snap impeachment, however, without a complete investigation sets a dangerous precedent. The impeachment vote may feel politically expedient to Democrats, but this is not the correct way to address the violence nor will it bring our country together. Instead we should be moving forward to work on the key challenges our country faces. I remain committed to building on our accomplishments from the past four years, which had given us one of the strongest economies in American history prior to COVID-19, as we safely reopen and rebuild.

Really, the first question journalists right now should be asking any Republicans invited/booked on their shows should be some variation of “Did Joe Biden win the election legitimately?” Because the way they respond to that question shows how serious they are and whether the interview is worth continuing past that point.

If they answer in the negative, cut them off immediately because they’re full of shit.

If they try to dodge the question, keeping asking it until you get a straight answer.

If they try to mumble about “concerns” or “irregularities,” tell them to GTFO because they’re afraid and thus not going to give you honest answers.

Only if they answer in the affirmative is it worth going forward because then you know you’re dealing with somebody who’s actually on speaking terms with reality.

Yeah, starting with my congressman, the venal and execrable Andy Biggs, who still hasn’t apologized for lying to his constituents. Instead, he’s playing to his fan base (which is not congruent with his constituency) with various items of red meat, trying to avoid dealing with charges of sedition in the runup to January 6.

On a separate note, here’s “pastor” Eric Jones instructing his followers on how to pray for our leaders, including a prayer that one of the most religious people we’ve ever had for president needs to get saved. What’s not stated here is whether Jones thinks Biden is unsaved because he’s Catholic or because he’s not a hardliner on abortion. Either are possible.

My response:

Dear Representative Smith:

I just read your January 19 column “Choosing to Come Together.” I see you’ve already mastered the Republican talking point of “unity” and “Democrats are hypocrites.”

There can be no unity without accountability. The insurrection and attempted coup of January 6 must be investigated so the attempted overthrow of our democratic republic can never happen again.

Those who endlessly called elections in other states (such as you) “suspect” or “stolen” helped create the climate which lead to the insurrection which could have gotten you killed as well. Are you that dedicated to the proposition of a non-existent steal that you were willing to die at the hands of Republican supporters? Really?

Since one of the repeating themes of Republican claims were that mail ballots or mailings of voter applications were somehow suspect or tainted, why haven’t you called for an investigation of your own reëlection: After all, our own state secretary of state sent out applications to everyone with polling stations, and large swaths of the Third District are by mail voting only. Is not your own election suspect under the same claims you made about Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Arizona?

We must have accountability, and it is imperative that former president Donald Trump be held accountable for his actions. There is no “rush to judgement” here. Mr. Trump for months said if he did not win then the election must be rigged, just as he did in 2016. We have his speeches and his endless Twitter rants. The evidence is there for anyone who wishes to see it.

Perhaps you don’t wish to.

The folks who laugh and/or sneer at the idea of “participation trophies” want you to know that they managed to get through Jan 20th without beating any cops to death or trampling their own underfoot.

Perhaps because they realized that, rather than being seen as “patriots” leading a glorious revolution against “tyrannical government,” they were instead seen as pathetic losers who nobody would shed too many tears over if they found themselves occupying a room at the Greybar Hotel.

I’d like to see Biden come out in the next few days and say something to the effect of “Republicans in various offices have not simply asked, but demanded that I step in and force my congressional colleagues to stop the impeachment process. They say that doing so will be a sign of ‘unity’ and of ‘healing.’ I’ll forego lecturing them on the separation of powers and the three branches of government, as the last four years show they have no idea such things exist. Instead, I want to thank them for finally acknowledging that I am the president and not Donald Trump. That after months of repeating lies and half-truths about the election, they have finally chosen to accept that I won the election and thus I am the legitimate president. After all, if they did not think so, then how do they think I have any power over Congressional Democrats?”

Didn’t get what happened in the end.

Anyway, this story by Harlan Ellison is better.

E is for ELEVATOR PEOPLE

They never speak, and they cannot meet your gaze. There are five hundred buildings in the United States whose elevators go deeper than the basement. When you have pressed the basement button and reached the bottom, you must press the basement button twice more. The elevator doors will close and you will hear the sound of special relays being thrown, and the elevator will descend. Into the caverns. Chance has not looked favorably on occasional voyagers in those five hundred cages. They have pressed the wrong button, too many times. They have been seized by those who shuffle through the caverns, and they have been … treated. Now they ride the cages. They never speak, and they cannot meet your gaze. They stare up at the numbers as they light and then go off, riding up and down even after night has fallen. Their clothes are clean. There is a special dry cleaner who does the work. Once you saw one of them, and her eyes were filled with screams. London is a city filled with narrow, secure stairways.

Covid vaccine volunteer, 72, struck by lightning after getting Moderna injection (Metro UK, December 18, 2020)

The Moderna vaccine attracts lightning.

A volunteer who signed up for Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine trial was struck by lightning 28 days after receiving the injection. That 72 year-old volunteer, whose name and gender have been withheld, met with the freak accident after getting an actual shot of Moderna’s vaccine, rather than the placedo [sic], during the second phase of the vaccine’s trials. The bizarre incident was revealed in the US Food and Drug Administration’s written media briefing into the safety of Moderna’s new vaccine. Doctors diagnosed the lightning strike victim with arrhythmia - an irregular heart beat - believed to have been caused by the strike. No further updates have been provided on the volunteer’s condition. The incident comprised one of three Serious Adverse Effects (SAEs) suffered by study participants who received the real vaccine - with all of those health scares deemed unrelated to the shot itself.

H is for HAMADRYAD

The Oxford English Dictionary has three definitions of hamadryad. The first is: a wood nymph that lives and dies in her tree. The second is: a venomous, hooded serpent of India.

The third definition is improbable. None of them mentions the mythic origins of the word.

The tree in which the Serpent lived was the hamadryad. Eve was poisoned. The wood of which the cross was made was the hamadryad. Jesus did not rise, he never died. The ark was composed of cubits of lumber cut from the hamadryad. You will find no sign of the vessel on top of Mt. Ararat. It sank. Toothpicks in Chinese restaurants should be avoided at all costs.

A social media post has been shared thousands of times claiming the ‘mainstream media’ were ‘silent’ after 23 elderly people died in Norway after receiving the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.

The Facebook post was uploaded on Jan. 16, 2021 and, alongside the caption, included a screenshot of two articles alleging ‘US media silence’ and ‘23 elderly people dead’ after taking the vaccine in Norway. (here)

The Facebook post lacked contextual detail. Norway is vaccinating residents of care homes, including those with serious underlying diseases. On average, 400 people die each week in nursing homes and long-term care facilities in the Nordic country. Therefore, it is expected that some among this population would die from unrelated causes after receiving the vaccine.

(more at Reuters)

Fact check: Discussion of deaths in elderly vaccine recipients in Norway lacks context (January 20, 2021)

Old conspiracy theories never die, since this one is still circulating today (it appears repeatedly on the RFK Jr. tweet, which has been reported scores of times and is still up because Twitter doesn’t care as long as they make money on it)

“unity” is the result
something to be achieved
the last step in a process
not a declaration designed to bury what happened

I saw Brian Wilson do that song on his ‘Smile’ tour in 2004, and this version is every bit as good as when the man himself did it.

It’s ironic that actual Beach Boy Mike Love - who hated the song when it was being recorded - is in the video.

If you’re ever in the mood for a ‘Surf’s Up’ jag, there are versions by Vince Gill (whoa) and Jeff Beck doing it instrumentally (double whoa) that are pretty amazing.

re: #112 Nyet

This one is for Dr. Lizardo.

L is for LOUP-GAROU

Had Sasa Novacek’s parents come to America from Ireland or Sweden or even Poland, he would not have realized that the woman next door was a werewolf. But they had come from Ostrava, in Czechoslovakia, and he recognized the shape of the nostrils, the hair in the palms of her hands when she loaned him a cup of nondairy creamer, the definitive S-curve of the spine as she walked to hang her laundry. So he was ready. He had bought a thirty-ought-six hunting rifle and he had melted down enough twenty-five-cent pieces to make his own silver bullets. And the night of the full moon, when the madness was upon her, and she burst through the kitchen window in a snarling strike of fangs and fur, he was ready for her. Calmly, with full presence, and murmuring the names of the very best saints, he emptied the rifle into her. Later, the coroner was unable to describe the condition of the body on a single form sheet. The coin of the United States of America, notably the twenty-five-cent piece, the quarter, has less than one percent pure silver in it. Times change, but legends do not.

He did it for a Brian Wilson tribute show, with Jimmy Webb on piano and David Crosby doing harmonies.

Vince Gill, David Crosby, Jimmy Web - Surf’s Up live at Radio City Music Hall, March 29, 2001

He tells a funny story that when they asked him to do ‘Surf’s Up,’ he wasn’t familiar with the song and thought it would be one of their earlier surf-y tunes. He said he had no idea how complex the song was and almost backed out of doing it because it was so daunting a piece of music.

So the winning MegaMillions ticket was bought in Novi, MI. Don’t know anything about the place, other than it seems to be a suburb of Detroit that is a bit better off and better educated than some of the other places in that region.

Anyway, hoping the winner has a level head and doesn’t get scammed by a pulpit-pimp or a former Republican President’s crime family.

I had a couple of winning plays, and had paired up all but one of the numbers… but alas didn’t play all six numbers on the same line.

Better luck next time to all of us.

My wife taped a Frontline episode about Joe Biden that they did recently because he’s president. A couple of interesting things early on:

1. Biden won his first election in 1972 by using contacts he had made while working as a lifeguard to meet black voters in Delaware, which helped him win in the same year Nixon won in a landslide.
2. Jill met Biden’s wife one time at the victory celebration for that election.
3. He lost his wife and daughter right after that.

Yes as did our overall military presence abroad. Bears repeating. Isolationism isn’t dovishness and not every intervention is Iraq. Unfortunately ratfucks like Greenwald, Assenge, Snowden, & their allies like to try to convince people otherwise.

Biden administration ousts Victoria Coates, who was falsely accused of being ‘Anonymous’

Victoria Coates, who was hired as the president of the government-funded Middle East Broadcasting Networks in the waning days of Donald Trump’s presidency, has been fired by the Biden administration, she told POLITICO.

Her deputy at the network, senior vice president Rob Greenway, got a call on Friday from his colleague Kelley Sullivan telling him that she had been notified in an email that she was acting head of MBN effective immediately and that his employment was terminated. U.S. Agency for Global Media is MBN’s parent organization.

You all may have seen this Washington Post article already, but it’s absolutely chilling. Every single conspirator who planned or participated in this attempted coup must be identified, indicted, and sent away for a long, long time.

I’m trying to lose weight too. Unfortunately, this week I took a step backwards on the weight loss scale. Making that stuff may have been a mistake, in hindsight.

Not a mistake at all…going to do it myself once I hit <240 for the first time in 12 years. 2 lbs to go. Down 31 from last January.

That’s awesome! I was down 5 lbs at the end of last week, then a long weekend of drinking and eating a little too much for a couple of days undid most of that. I’ll get the wagon going again; I’ve been carefully watching my calories since then.

Yeah, that’s not going to go over well. He’ll get more support than I would like, but if the Democrats put up anyone who is halfway competent, this guy will be a smoking crater.

Was there something in particular that triggered these protests or was Russia just like: “Fuck it, we’ve had enough of Putin.”?

Alexei Navalny, the leader of the opposition party, was arrested immediately upon his return to Russia following his recovery from being poisoned.

Just how much jeopardy is Putin in here? I know he’s pretty entrenched, but stranger things have happened.

To see both Trump and Putin fall inside the same year would be almost too perfect.

Anthony Scaramucci was interviewed a couple days ago in a podcast called Intergenerational Politics Podcast which is co-hosted by Jill Wine-Banks and is kind of designed to inform young voters about how politics works. It was enlightening in a somewhat nauseating way, but it was also honest and funny about his participation, and a prediction that he made in the last five minutes was kind of (literally) mindblowing. It’s an hour long but it was a good lesson about life in DC.

Alexei Navalny, the leader of the opposition party, was arrested immediately upon his return to Russia following his recovery from being poisoned.

I don’t suppose it helps that he’s being imprisoned essentially for violating his parole — imposed by the Russian government — because he left the country for treatment after being poisoned by the Russian government.
