Miscarriage is devastating. So difficult to understand. It’s like grieving in reverse: Instead of memories, you have hopes to hold on to. Who are you mourning?

I believe in a soul - I have to now - in as much as something to represent the difference between being alive, or inert. The force that is at the source of every person, the fundamental burning core. That place inside us where, when we are totally alone and in darkness, we are all the same. And, being the same, never truly alone.

This music was written in a blur after driving home from an abandoned tour in Germany to collapse inward in grief. I’m sorry to everyone I let down then. I can remember the hour or so it took to write only as a single snapshot from outside myself.

It is dedicated with constant love to a life never lived. I wish we’d got to meet you.

At todays rate, the 100 million shots appears to be a do-able target.

My wife and I are 64, we’ll probably be eligible in the spring time. I’m not sure if we will get the shots through Kaiser Permanente or the State/County. We registered through the state. I’ll take what is available ASAP.

Remember, the vaccine doesn’t prevent you from getting Covid-19. You will just have minimal, if any, symptoms. You can still infect others.

I’m 66 and live in Fairfax County, Virginia.

Fairfax County, Va has something over 1 million inhabitants. It has almost 200,000 on the waiting list.

The County Health Department opened 1c the day Azar announced that HHS was releasing its extra stocks of vaccine. But before HHS announced that there were no extra stocks of Vaccine.

Currently the County is getting 18,000 doses of vaccine a week. (Although it isn’t clear whether that includes second doses as well.)

I signed up on the waiting list through Kaiser. I have heard of people getting vaccinated through private physicians and the Veteran’s Administration in Clarksburg WVA.

Most of the folks that I have heard have received vaccinations are 75+ and a the VA is reportedly prioritizing pre-existing conditions as well. The county is also prioritizing First Responders, Medical Personnel and Teachers.

I expect to be waiting for a while.

If you’re in CA and have Kaiser, they’ll probably be your source. I think they’re still working on 65 and above right now, but you might want to call them.

Kaiser seems to be using their vaccine in Southern California mostly. It is worse off than the Bay Area. I just saw my doctor yesterday, no mention of when it will be available. I walked out on my blood test. That department is really slowed down because of cleaning everything after each patient. I’ve been to Kaiser 3 times since the pandemic started, they are pretty much operating in crisis mode. I just don’t think they will be first to have vaccine available here.

re: #8 Dread Pirate Ron

Everything I’ve seen from Kaiser in Southern California is basically this:

“The state says we can give the vaccine to people 65 and up (Phase 1B)… BUT, we don’t have enough so we are only giving it to health care workers at the moment.”

A buddy of mine ordered plans for a hammered dulcimer (in the late 1970’s when such instruments were not widely available) from the Smithsonian Institute and built one which we used in our band.

That scene made a huge impression on me when I was a little kid. That said, I already knew that the swastika was BAD because one of the older kids had drawn one on the sidewalk in chalk, said to the surrounding kids it was illegal (it’s not, but you know how “illegal” gets the attention of people) but *she* was letting us know this so we didn’t get in trouble. Then she drew some more lines and it disappeared.

It’s really kind of weird what we learned through the kid grapevine in a lower middle class housing development in the mid 1960s.

What is this “call his mother”? My grandmother used to call my father at 5 am in the morning, when she knew she would find him at home and the call rates were lower (remember that?). If I wasn’t awakened by the phone ringing*, I was awakened by my father’s rising voice trying to reason with my grandmother about something or another.

* We had one bell for all the phones in the house, it was a modified doorbell, it was mounted at the bottom of the stairs from my bedroom, and it was LOUD. This was also back in the day when the phone company charged for each extension. My dad was enamored of such things. On the same wall as the doorbell/ringer, he had a mechanical timer on the heater which was set to turn off at 11 pm and turn back on again at 4:30. We were warned not to touch it. If we were cold, we could go back to bed. Even to this day, I still get weird about hearing a heater running.

I got my first Pfizer Fauci Ouchie jab at my local VA on the third. They were doing 750 that day and it was all very efficiently set up logistically. I was in and out, literally, in 30 minutes. I’m 73 with a heart condition that doesn’t affect me but qualifies. I had registered ahead as willing to go and that sped things up.

What an amazing feeling of lifting of tension and dread it was. I napped for most of the next two days. (Way too cold to be outside doing things.)

Anti-maskers tend to be more sociopathic? Who could have guessed?

Researchers from the State University of Londrina found that people who reported “antisocial traits,” such as low levels of empathy and high levels of callousness and risk-taking, were less-likely to comply with Covid-19 prevention measures, such as wearing a mask and social distancing.

In this case, “antisocial” refers to traits that are typically present in people diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder, which is defined as “a chronic and pervasive disposition to disregard and violate the rights of others,”

If the J&J vaccine simply prevents Covid-19 from killing people and preventing serious on-going conditions I’d consider that a win. We get another “nasty flu” virus floating around, but it’s also a lot better than 500,000 dead and segments of the economy seriously compromised.

re: #72 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)

If the J&J vaccine simply prevents Covid-19 from killing people and preventing serious on-going conditions I’d consider that a win. We get another “nasty flu” virus floating around, but it’s also a lot better than 500,000 dead and segments of the economy seriously compromised.

Likewise (and it’s what epidemiologists are saying too). The vaccine would put covid in the “really nasty cold” area, since people are hospitalized and die of the flu.

One year ago today, betting markets gave Joe Biden a 5.9% chance of winning the presidency.

I think we can safely conclude that the political betting markets are dumb. It’s blind name recognition and the shallowest of political headlines. Either the investors have no clue, are completely ideologically committed anyways, or are investing assuming that everyone else is one of the first two.

These markets are probably at the “reliably wrong” level, where you can usually figure out what’s happening by assuming the opposite of what these things are telling you.

It’s the fact that bookies in other countries actually allow people to bet on US politics that’s kind of fun. I’ll bet a few people put down 20 quid on Biden at 15-1 odds in January…what’s the harm in a bet like that?

I remember reading a few stories about people who made long shot bets 300-1 in a lark and then wound up winning.

The Pie Overlord!  Feb 7, 2021 • 8:54:05am

All the snowstorms reminds me of this classic: (in spoiler tags if you’ve seen it a zillion times before)

Dec 8. - It’s starting to snow. The first of the season and the first I’ve seen in years. The wife and I took our hot buttered rums and sat by the picture window. Watching the soft flakes drift down, clinging to the trees and covering the ground. It was beautiful.

Dec 9. - We woke to a lovely blanket of crystal white snow covering the landscape. What a fantastic sight. Every tree and shrub covered with a beautiful mantle. I shoveled snow for the first time in my life and I loved it. I did both the driveway and our sidewalk. Later, the city snowplow came along and accidentally covered up our driveway with compacted snow from the street. The driver smiled and waved. I waved back and shoveled it again.

Dec 10. - It snowed an additional 6 inches last night and the temperature dropped to around 11 degrees. Several limbs on the trees and shrubs snapped due to the weight of the snow. I shoveled the driveway again. Shortly afterwards the snowplow came by and did his trick again. Much of the snow is now brownish-grey.

Dec 11. - Warmed up enough during the day to create some slush which soon became ice when the temperature dropped again. Bought snow tires for both cars. Fell on my ass in the driveway; $145 to a chiropractor, but nothing was broken. More snow and ice expected today.

Dec 12. - Still cold. Sold the wife’s car and bought a 4x4 in order to get her to work. Slid into a guardrail anyway and did considerable amount of damage to the rear quarter panel. Had another 8 inches of the white shit last night. Both vehicles covered with salt and crud. More shoveling in store for me today. That goddamn snow plow came by twice today.

Dec 13. - Two below zero outside! More fucking snow. Not a tree or shrub on our property that hasn’t been damaged. Power was off most of the night. Tried to keep from freezing to death with candles and a kerosene heater, which tipped over and nearly burned the house down. I managed to put out the flames, but suffered 2nd degree burns on my hands and lost my eyelashes and eyebrows. Car slid on the ice on way to emergency room and was totaled.

Dec 14. - Goddamn mother-fucking white shit keeps coming down. Have to put on all the clothes I own just to get to the mailbox. If I ever catch that son-of-a-bitch that drives the snowplow I’ll chew open his chest and rip out his heart. I think he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then comes down the street about 100 mph and buries our driveway again. Power still off. Toilet froze and part of the roof is starting to cave in.

Dec 15. - Six goddamn more fucking inches of fucking snow and fucking sleet and fucking ice and god knows what other kind of fucking white shit fell last night. I wounded the fucking snowplow asshole with an ice axe but he managed to get away. Wife left me. Car won’t start. I think I’m going snow blind. I can’t move my toes. Haven’t seen the sun in weeks. More snow predicted. Wind chill is minus 22 fucking degrees. I’m moving back to Florida.

Put the duck on the rack itself with a deep pan below it to catch all the fat. After the first couple turns of the bird, add the potatoes to the drip pan beneath the duck as it cooks. To finish the potatoes, remove them, give them a smash and fry them in an ungreased fry pan. Finish with salt & pepper. Makes really nice little smashed circles that are crisped up and not fatty.

I’m sure you meant confit de canard, but autocorrect did you wrong.

For duck legs, I brown them upside down in a non-preheated frypan before putting them in the oven at low heat and slow (like, 1 and a half hours). At that point, it pulls apart like confit but technically isn’t. You can’t cook duck or goose anything like chicken or turkey, since they’re so much more fatty.

I haven’t tried guinea fowl, but I understand that it’s got less fat than chicken and you have to be careful not to dry it out.

If, in fact, we are entering a period when Americans are hungry for big government action and look askance at Republicans’ extremism and obstructionism, Republicans may have severely misinterpreted the public mood. In that case, Biden’s instinct to move quickly and boldly, despite a lack of GOP support in Congress, may prove prescient. Duck! Ah, duck is great. You need to prick the skin all over so that the fat drains off. Have a rack raising the bird in your roasting pan is a must. Rub it with classic herbs like parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme, basil, savory & rub in a bit of garlic. This is best on the inside cavity and under the skin. While baking, I like simply to baste it in olive oil and I never bother turning it if I have the rack so that the heat can get all around it.

Avoid the temptation and don’t molest the poor thing with that nasty orange sauce. BBQ can be good but I like just the classic herbs and oil above.

A stuffing of corn bread with apple, celery, carrot, onion, garlic, walnut and raisin is a go to for me as the primary side with a nice green veggie.

A nice bottle of burgundy will complement this well.

The Independent:

ISRAELI HACKERS TAKE DOWN KKK WEBSITE AND REVEAL INFORMATION ABOUT WHITE SUPREMACIST FOUNDERS

A website run by members of the white supremacist organisation the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) has been breached by Israeli hackers.

The hackers, who are a collection of anti-fascists called Hayalim Almonim - Hebrew for “Anonymous Soldiers” - exposed pictures, names, and personal information of members of the Patriotic Brigade Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.

The KKK website, which originally contained white supremacist imagery and a link to join the society, was defaced, according to the Jerusalem Post. The site has now been removed.

Phrases including “SHABBAT SHALOM! GOODNIGHT WHITE PRIDE ;)” were posted to the top of the website. “Our objective is to strike terror into the hearts of the enemies of humanity,” Hayalim Almonim told the Jerusalem Post.

“Neo-Nazi and other white supremacist groups believe that Jews have an all-seeing eye. Our desire is to make their fantasies a reality, and exploit their conspiracy theories as a form of psychological warfare.

“We want them to know, wherever they are in the world that will find them and expose them. We will destroy their lives. And we will bathe in their tears, and mock at the gnashing of their teeth. There is nowhere that is beyond our reach.”

I love love love lamb!! but found lamb is very different based on where they’re ranched or whatever it’s called. New Zealand lamb is the best. The rest is ok at best.

Mom used to serve leg of lamb once a month…UNTIL we watched an episode of Alfred Hitchcock where Barbara Bel Geddes did something VERY NAUGHTY with it. Dad looked at Mom and said…NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!

Opinion: How much did 2020 change the country? Jen Rubin, WaPo

I’ll estimate by 2022 about half the GOP congresscritters will be lying about having supported COVID relief in 2021. I understand the no-enemies-to-my-right tactic not to get primaried, but it doesn’t work forever and the country’s going to be in a significantly different place by that time.

Plus, voting against relief means you’re a sociopathic genocidal piece of shit, and it should count for something, even if they don’t think so.

Semi-apocryphal tale about Robert Merrill:
The Metropolitan star went to a bank while touring, and tried to cash a $100 check—but he had left his ID in the hotel room. The teller declined the check, and Merrill asked for the manager. Manager, knowing of the singer, said “I’ll approve the check if you will sing a few notes so I can be sure.”

Merrill: “If someone sings a few notes for $100, you can be sure it’s not Robert Merrill.”

We were in Paris on an anniversary trip and the Mrs. had ordered steak and I ordered duck from Ambassade d’Auvergne which is a really good spot to try regional French cuisine. The steak came out just this side of mooing, and the Mrs. liked her steaks more medium at that point. So we swapped. It was a great meal either way.

It was first time she had duck, and loved it. Perfectly done.

Best part of the meal was aligot, which is a cheese-potato mixture which was absolutely divine with the duck fat and steak drippings.

I once guided a DoD explosives team on an evaluation tour of all our bases in Italy and Turkey. One was in a tiny remote village outside of Pavia—a total whistlestop. We went to the only restaurant, where the (Italian only) waitress gave us the (Italian only) menu. My Tarzan-level Italian got us through it until we hit “anitra”. We were so impressed with the waitress’ barnyard pantomime that one of the guys ordered it. So she went off to the market to buy a duck.

My wife and I got ours yesterday, it was a matter of luck - I was at the clinic site performing the shots for our area when they refreshed that vaccine was available, all availability for 5000 shots was gone in under fifteen minutes after I hit the schedule button and got us in. I ran to the neighbor’s house and all slots were gone by time he got logged in.

Even if you are under the age you can qualify if you have any health complications, the list of them is quite extensive.

This would be a good time to tell you that landline signal voltages are low and safe, but that the ringer voltage, for a couple seconds, can be around 90 volts.

Reminds me of an odd dream I had last week: I’m at a table with three other people, apparently the topic is Mars, specifically life on Mars. Apparently some device we sent detected possible signs of life (real signs, not the purported life implications of some other long-ago lander), and I argued that if we had only one shot then we should go for it - go there and follow up on the initial discovery. Another person at the table apparently was dismissing it. Then I am looking down through a microscope and see some little critter moving around.

Anyway, that was a dream. In real life I doubt there are living things on Mars. It is quite hostile (like almost all the universe).

Dunno from “separate ringer”. That’s the voltage for the phone’s internal bell. (Painful, not usually harmful.)

Excellent show.

I still remain hopeful somebody will do a series on Kim Stanley Robinson’s Mars trilogy (Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars).

Something from that series that has stayed with me; because a Mars day is about 35 minutes longer than an Earth day, they stay on a 24-hour clock by initiating the Time Slip at the end of each day, wherein the clocks are paused.

How the GOP Surrendered to Extremism

Sixty years ago, many GOP leaders resisted radicals in their ranks. Now they’re not even trying. It’s an image that still shocks in its feral intensity: On July 14, 1964, supporters of Barry Goldwater, the arch-conservative senator from Arizona whom the Republican Party was preparing to crown as its presidential nominee, unleashed a torrent of boos against New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller as he spoke at the party’s national convention in San Francisco.

More than half a century later, Goldwater’s army of conservatives from cookie-cutter Sun Belt subdivisions howling their discontent at Rockefeller—the embodiment of the GOP’s centrist, East Coast establishment—remains a milestone in the right’s conquest of the party. The atmosphere was so heated that Jackie Robinson, who was a Rockefeller supporter, nearly got into a fight on the floor with a Goldwater acolyte from Alabama.

What’s less remembered is why Rockefeller, who had lost the nomination to Goldwater, was standing behind the lectern in the first place: to speak in support of an amendment to the party platform that would condemn political extremism. The resolution repudiated “the efforts of irresponsible extremist organizations,” including the Communist Party, the Ku Klux Klan, and the John Birch Society, a rapidly growing far-right grassroots group obsessed with the alleged communist infiltration of America.

I remember this. The Birchers and their deranged allies howled like mad dogs and it went on and on. It was amazing at the time.
