Hey, I have a question for the Navy types here.

Is it true the Swedish Navy have barcodes on their ships so at the docks they can Scan da Navy in?

So about that new strain in CA. The vaccines still provide some protection, though not as much as for other variants. Also this:

“Chiu cautions, however, that this increased risk of death may not be a sign that the variant is inherently more lethal. Rather, it might simply be a reflection that its greater transmissibility caused hospitals to become so overwhelmed and healthcare resources to be stretched so thin that more deaths were the result — especially in Southern California.”

Only thing I know which resembles a barcode is on the sides of SECG vessels, yellow thin band and broad band on blue background:

Considering that it’s written by the lawyer who just spewed the incomprehensibly bad “letter to please let me recoup my lawyers’ fees for this case I worked pro bono”, Mr. Paul M. My church bought a plot of land for their new campus. The land by itself - absent any actual construction or planning costs - was $700k. And that’s in a massively rural area where land isn’t exactly at a premium price.

I don’t live in Texas, but I can tell you in my part of the Deep South wild temperature swings are pretty common during parts of the winter. In my particular case it is my proximity to the Gulf of Mexico that is the primary driver. Usually the moisture generated by the Gulf is enough to keep the coldest weather systems from getting this far south but sometimes the jet stream takes a real dip and we get a polar vortex.

Every February we’re guaranteed a few days of blistering cold. Been like that for at least a decade now as I recall. But without fail, not long after the cold snap, we’ll see days with highs in the 60s and sometimes even low 70s.

I’m sure climate change is making the swings a bit worse, but they are not a new phenomenon.

there’s oodles of news, but unless there’s violence, lawbreaking or a certain amount of sensationalism involved, our media isn’t that concerned.

If it bleeds, it leads is very real.

With who is in charge now, legislating is boring, courtesy and discussion mostly rule the agenda versus committing treason or declaring one political party a group of country-hating, freedom-hating vicious armed radical snowflakes who look to legislate away another group’s established rights to commit crimes.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell will support Merrick Garland’s nomination for attorney general, five years after blocking the judge’s path to the Supreme Court…

The Senate Judiciary Committee held a two-day confirmation hearing this week for Garland. Some Senate Republicans criticized Garland for not answering enough questions, but several have already announced their support for him to lead the Justice Department, including Sens. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) and John Cornyn (R-Texas), a McConnell confidant. Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, also spoke positively of Garland on Monday…

Not this year. We still have snow on the ground, and we’re on the coast!
We usually don’t have a true spring until the switch is thrown in early May.

we had upwhere to four inches of snow and ice.
notice the thermometer in upper right.

That white stuff? Mostly ice about an inch thick. Gonna take awhile to thaw.

That fiery picture? That was a BLEVE. One of the tank cars cooked off.

The better have drawn a 1/2 mile circle and gotten everyone inside it out.

I remember seeing a close-up video of a chain of BLEVEs from a truck in Russia that was carrying tanks of some compressed flammable gas that had gotten in an accident and was on fire. It was a frightening sight.

Finally got the Airdyne assembled and it is now in the office/sunroom. My mother took the first spin; discovered that you have to lead in with the right foot for the fan to kick in (maybe?)

Since both of us have Galaxy Watch 3’s we got all the telemetry we need on our wrists - except my mother can get blood pressure and EKG due to the latest update for Samsung devices, while I’m out of luck with my Pixel 4 - I attempted to do a sideload via the Tizen SDK and had no luck. While she gets Blood Pressure and EKG, we both have pulse, pulseOx, and heart rate.

I went to go look her up. This is in the trivia section of her imdb entry:

Skated for Gotham Girls Roller Derby (Team: Manhattan Mayhem) under the name Margaret Thrasher, Prime Minister of Your Demise.

Neera Tanden is unavailable for comment.

Garland is a white male — a big advantage in gaining GOP approval. As someone pointed out downstairs, Manchin’s opposition to Tanden is purely personal and not political. She attacked his daughter (who so merited it) but family takes precedence over work obligations.

WaPo: Net neutrality law to take effect in California after judge deals blow to telecom industry
Decision could open the door for other states to pass open-Internet rules the Trump administration opposed

California may soon begin enforcing its first-in-the-nation net neutrality law after a federal judge on Tuesday ruled against broadband providers that had sought to scuttle the open-internet safeguards.

The ruling amounts to a major victory for advocates of rules that require AT&T, Comcast, Verizon and other telecom giants to treat all web traffic equally, potentially setting the stage for states nationwide to follow California’s lead and try to adopt tough new protections of their own.
