During the last guy’s wretched administration, press conferences were unbearable, led by one liar after another telling obvious lies, and everyone knew they were lying but still the press played along like nothing was wrong.

But things are different now, so let’s check in and see how things are going with Jen Psaki. The press haven’t changed much, but the administration sure has.

So I mentioned that it’s my weekend and I was going to go on a liquor store run this morning. Well, mission accomplished, albiet a slightly higher outlay than planned.

A six of Pilsner Urquell, the original pils.
A six of Newcastle Brown ale
and
A liter of Famous Grouse.

Plus an old Russian Jupiter 12 35/2.8 lens arrived from Ukraine.

Time to kick back in my little place and enjoy the one warm day this week.

Got my second Pfizer shot very very very early this morning, around 5 am, after a very dark 30 minute drive to the vaccination site. We had Covid back in June when it wasn’t as trendy, I expect this shot to kick my ass later today, like it did to my mate when she got her second in January. woo

Rapper Lil Nas X is producing 666 pairs of Nike shoes called “Satan Shoes.” The shoes are part of promoting a new music video in which this rapper descends down a stripper pole and gives Satan a lap dance. The morals in this country have fallen so fast.

Brilliant marketing ploy. Free publicity and advertising from righteously indiginificated Christian moralists.

TBF, until the vaccines were actually approved, it is difficult to get the appropriate infrastructure in place; for example, refrigeration needs depend on the vaccines themselves. There was so much that was unknown at the time — just because a pharmaceutical firm issues a press release claiming the amazing success of their product, it does not guarantee that internal studies when evaluated by a team of outside experts would satisfy even the looser requirements under “emergency use authorization”.

pretty sure that the GOP would have done their best to monetize it; you pay, you get vaccinated, never mind that we called it a hoax and all of that shit. Also too, expect us to take all of the credit for the work of those in the private sector, regardless if they got federal funds because that’s how we roll.

Arrange for vaccination sites, get states lined up with distribution plans and help them with prioritization (obviously some states like Florida needed it)…there was a lot of pre-flight work that could have been done but wasn’t.

CRAP. The wind just blew down my cedar privacy fence into my neighbors driveway. My neighbor had started moving pieces into my yard so I went out with a battery rotary saw and cut it into manageable lengths and now it’s sitting in my back yard. My insurance company is going to call me back in about an hour to start a claim. My deductible is $1000 so it won’t be a lot. Only one of the pickets broke so I may be able to salvage about 80% of them if I go that route. Posts are going to be a hassle because the guy I hired to set them came in with an auger that was at least 18”. There are massive concrete footings right where I want the new posts to be. I might look into using galvanized posts installed into the existing wood post holes.

Racism was his shtick well before he got started running. His attitude toward the Central Park 5 was very early on; and let’s never forget his birtherism.

i grew up and lived in NY until 1996 so yeah, i know that’s him.
i see his political persona as a separate, way more recent thing that grew quickly.
(and yes i know he toyed with politics back in 1999. that was a different animal imo)

- the escalator got him ‘introduced’
- most of the country that would come to matter to him (ie his future base) mostly only knew him from the tv show
- he got the toe hold based on the show and his name ‘reputation as a businessman’ (also a lie)**
- then he started testing the waters faster and looser
- he found there was a shit ton of people willing to support his shtick (saying out loud the racism, misogyny, bashing foreigners, the disabled, etc.)

- the reaction to the Grab ‘Em tape confirmed it for him. and doomed the rest of us.

** scads of new yorkers and those who knew were screaming ‘you have no idea what he’s really like or what you’re getting into’. it wasn’t enough

re: #94 stpaulbear

When I put up my chain link fence I figured I would have to remove at least one post to allow large equipment into the yard so I used one of these set into concrete. The post slides in and out with no hassles. Well except for having to take the fencing down.

By spinning it as “fight/battle over” voting rights, they give the impression that both sides are in general agreement but squabbling over the details, rather than one side wanting to expand voting rights while the other wishes to narrow the voting pool as far down as needed to maintain minority rule.

I politely replied that we have different perspectives and will never persuade the other of the error of their ways — and one of the likes was from another Trumpster friend. He has taken the route of agreeing to disagree without resorting to demeaning language or hostility.

The only time I now respond to a Trumpster’s comment on their personal page is when I try (usually in vain) to correct an outright error of fact.

Crap, it’s windy here. Now that my fence has blown down I’m waiting for the next thing to be destroyed. High wind weather advisory ends at 9:00 pm and it can’t come fast enough. My nerves are shot with weather paranoia today. I don’t know how Anymouse does it.

I took some of the fence apart to salvage the cedar pickets. They’re about 10 years old and highly weathered but they’re expensive to replace. Working on the fence made me realize how much I’ve been just sitting on my ass for the last year. I’m in horrid shape.

Sorry for whining. I’m in a crappy mood today.

I’d offer to let you join my support group for cranky people, but I’m too cranky to have a support group…

That’s why they parked her in the lake. She’s going to be sitting there for a while, undergoing inspections and possibly repairs. Her cargo does still have to get to its destination; those dildos are wanted by someone somewhere.

Because Georgia simply isn’t bad enough:

We’re sooner to get unlimited gun ownership at this point than any modicum of gun control. Even with the NRA running off fumes, it still basically runs the goddamn country.

Because I’m a lazy about food, I decided a chicken pot pie would hit the spot for dinner. When I opened the microwave to put the pie in, I found the bowl of Chunky chicken pot pie soup (“pub style”) that I’d forgotten about after my fence blew down. My life is so sad.

I thought the operators of the canal provided a small crew to pilot ships through the canal. Seems kind of weird to blame the actual crew for something the canal pilot did.

They do, and there was a report that the Suez Canal pilots, as opposed to their (Central/South) American counterparts in Panama, are very loose in discipline and slightly corrupt.

OK. I disavow my previous comment. The ship itself will still live in infamy from now on.

Panama pilots do have the advantage of not encountering blinding sandstorms. I wonder if there is also an operational difference between a N-S canal and an E-W canal.

Yes they are scary if you never had one before.

They stopped when Dr. put me on beta-blockers.

I had my first one three years ago on the sideline of a Houston Texans game that I was shooting. It looked like I was walking through a flashing tunnel that got bigger and bigger and then it just went away. No pain or anything, but it freaked me the fuck out.

Had it happen to me a couple times over 10 years ago while I was sitting at my desk in the office. Very strange — and I panicked the first time until it vanished.

Same here. Mine were jaggy neon-colored circles that just got bigger and bigger, and then were gone. Total freak.

The NY Times had an opinion piece by Nicholas Ashford promoting the return of the Fairness Doctrine to alleviate the problem of the daily dose of misinformation that too many receive from various media platforms. On the surface, it seems like a beguiling proposal but then I started wondering: what happens if the sane media is forced to host anti-vaxxers who want to respond to infectious disease specialists or climate change deniers want equal rights with scientists or creationists demand the opportunity to responds to evolutionary biologists? How is this managed to prevent lies from gaining a platform?

The author suggested:

A reimagined and expanded version of this policy could enable independent bodies to review inaccurate material and require that technology platforms and broadcast media publish and respond to criticism.

But in these contentious time, when facts have to fight “alternative facts”, I’m not sure that this is a possibility as long as the GOP remains a force for racism and anti-science rhetoric

Contrary to the way most people would guess, the Panama Canal actually does run N-S… or at least it is closer to that than E-W.

It’s more or less NNW-SSE. The Pacific entrance is actually to the east of the Atlantic entrance.

I think he will serve time. Prosecution’s witness today was damning, and there’s more to come. He might not get the charge people want, but he’ll do time or Minneapolis/St. Paul will burn.

I firmly believe he will be acquitted of all charges. Nothing has changed. I was so forceful about that declaration on twitter, because I’m a little afraid of doing such things there anymore.

It’s not going to be good for our country at all.
