Re the discussion downstairs about insulin: An IRL RW Trumpster friend on Medicare was complaining because last August Medicare stopped covering the insulin he was taking and was working just fine. They forced him to switch to a different brand that apparently kicks in at a different time leading to a lot of overnight low or high glucose alerts. Medicines that are nominally the same do not always function the same way. Generics are not identical to the name brand.
We have a real problem with the pharmaceutical industry; costs must be brought under control and the patient’s well-being must come first. Capitalism, unless tightly regulated, will be the death of us all.
re: #9 Hecuba’s daughter
Agree. A dear friend is constantly being yanked from one diabetes med to another (or 3 or 4), and he just can’t get level. Another friend has plenty of money, good insurance, and they paid for him to get an insulin pump installed, and he never has to worry about a thing about it. My first friend is losing a foot, has had heart attacks and strokes, and is very afraid of kidney failure. Both his parents died of diabetes that could not get treated properly because of money. grrrr
And this is why more women should be in charge of things.

What’s the downside of humoring That Fucking Guy? The shitshow we now have going on here in Maricopa County, to the point where the few remaining sane, sensible, conservative Republicans (all of whom seem to be on the Board of Supervisors) are going nuts trying to deal with the fraudit. Apparently the ballots were moved to the state fair grounds today, with none of the security you might expect from an alleged audit.
*cough* some of us here in Maricopa County have jobs, are on call and can’t just run to Phoenix (at least 30 min drive) to protest. Believe me, I’ve thought about it, but again, I work, and I’m on call. Oh yeah, and the aforementioned armed MAGAts…
— Dee *Professional Cat Herder* Holmes (@mmmirele) May 16, 2021
And yeah, I really thought about it a LOT…but these guys are all packing heat.
I did go out and protest at Mark Driscoll’s Circus of “Where’s Jesus?” this afternoon, but knocked it off after only hitting one service. I did NOT like the way I was feeling. Basically, I should have been sweating A LOT (it was 97 out there) and I wasn’t sweating much at all.
There were a couple of changes this week at the circus. This bus, which had been parked next to the sidewalk on McDonald Dr., was moved behind this dumpster. I don’t know if it was because I posted pictures of it on Twitter. Driscoll is notorious for a statement he made about 2012 about how there were going to be bodies behind the Mars Hill (his previous church) bus. He thought he was being smart and snarky but maybe not.
Mark Driscoll had the bus moved to behind a garbage dumpster at the back of the church lot. Thst’s not where ut was last week. @wartwatch @watchkeep @wthrockmorton @DCEagle1 @StuffCCLikes pic.twitter.com/1TlsnTcX2x

What he did was have people park their trucks nose to tail in front of the area in front where he’s got the grill, the faux Airstream, the picnic tables, etc., etc., in hopes of blocking me and my signs. Unfortunately, as I told the two sign-wavers that came out today, Scientology did it better. Back in 2001, Scientology rented every U-Haul they could get their hands on in the Tampa-St. Pete area and proceeded to park them around buildings where they didn’t want the Sea Org and the “public” (Scientology members) to see our signs.
Finally, because it’s a picture of That Fucking Guy as a car window shade, it’s behind the private button.

That’s all we heard for 4 years: “What’s the downside for humoring him?” When it wasn’t “sane” Repubs excusing their cowardice, it was “moderate” Dems talking up how they could find “common ground” with him. And when it wasn’t those two, it was pundits arguing that he needed to be “given a chance” before attacking him/his proposals.
If the road to Hell is paved with good intentions, as people often like to quip, then there’s a 10 lane superhighway constructed in the aftermath of the last 4 years.

Nice skin on the wall. How big was it?
Since things have come to a halt for new posts right now I am going to relate a scene from yesterday morning at dad’s house. I got to dads about 10:30 yesterday morning to do some yard work. He was napping when I got there so I just started into working. While I was cutting the front yard he came out onto the porch and waved to me. I stopped on my round in front of the porch and shut down the tractor. First words out of his mouth was, “Did you bring any beer?”. I asked him, “What, no How ya doing? How’s the family, or even a fuck you?”. So he says, “Fuck you, did you bring any beer?” :-). I hate how much like my dad I am.
So later on I need to go into town to get more gas so I stopped and got him a 6-pack (dad hasn’t been allowed to drive for almost 2 years). I get back to his place and my sisters car is gone and she and dad aren’t there. I put the 6-pack in the fridge and go back to my yard work. They get back at some point and my sister comes out back where I am cutting and lets me know dad has enough beer now. They had picked up a 6-pack for him also while they were in town. So dad should be happy now, he has a 12-pack.
My T480 appeared to not be charging this morning. I’d unplug it and the charging light stayed on, even if I did a full power shut down. Plugged in, the battery didn’t seem to be taking. I remembered this happening with a Lenovo before and watching tech support reset the interna/chip battery, so I googled it to confirm then did the following (should you experience a similar situation).
Note, in order for this to work, you have to do it standing in the kitchen butt nekkid.
1. Find a tiny fucking Philips screwdriver…no, smaller…look in the box of screwdriver bits in the garage.
2. Find the handle for attaching the screwdriver bit…fuck. Deal without it.
3. Hold the screwdriver bit between your fingers and twist out the screws on the back of the laptop.
4. Study the little black slab they call a battery. Remove the two screws holding it down.
5. Fail to remove it then discover the third.
6. Lift the battery out and set it to the side.
7. Lift the shell and hold the power down for thirty seconds.
8. Don’t trust yourself to do time in your head and hold the button down for another thirty seconds but have Alexa keep the time.
9. Put all that shit back together.
Somewhere around step six shout to your wife that you’re fine you’re just trying to fix something.
Battery back up to 61% now.

I already had to fight off one nut in the county seat several months ago who was harassing my wife (because thirty-something going after a grey-haired woman on a cane is so manly), and another nut who attacked me in a restaurant in Wyoming (and that’s when masks were mandatory there by Gov. Gordon’s order).
I’m not looking forward to what’s coming.
The country is nowhere near vaccinated sufficiently to end the epidemic here. Part of public health messaging is a simple easy-to-digest message, and the CDC’s messaging about masks is not that.
A simpler message is “we haven’t ended the epidemic yet, masks are still required.”
The idea of “following the science” might make sense to people who actually understand the powers and limitations of science, but for the vast majority of the country, they need their messages in little bites.
A message of “you can go without masks, except when you find yourself amongst people in group A or in social situations B, C, and D” is not as useful as “continue wearing masks.”
