John Oliver: The Long, Shameful History of Housing Discrimination

My mom was a poor widow in Gary, Indiana who could not afford to join the white flight to the suburbs in the 60’s…I watched them flip two different neighborhoods from all-white to almost all black/Latino in a matter of months, making enormous profits off it all fed by racial discrimination.

Simple. Ask them who won the election. Not really /S.
Rep. Blake Moore (R-UT) “failed to properly disclose dozens of stock and stock-option trades together worth at least $70,000 and as much as $1.1 million,” Insider reports.Moore is a member of the House Armed Services Committee and invested in the defense contractor Raytheon.

“Constitutional carry” starts here on Friday. It may pass quietly or it could be a bloodbath. I know one thing: Few if any racist goobers have thought through the implications of Black and Hispanic Texans now being able to carry without selective hindrance from law enforcement.

Does he really think that Texas police won’t still discriminate against Black and Hispanic people carrying weapons? That’s cute.
Some additional evidence on the topic.
Race determines home values more today than it did in 1980
New research into how a neighborhood’s home values are impacted by its racial composition reveals that appraisals were affected to a larger extent by race in 2015 than in 1980 — to the financial detriment of homeowners in majority-Black and majority-Hispanic neighborhoods.
Using Census Bureau data from 1980-2015, the study from Junia Howell and Elizabeth Korver-Glenn shows that during that period, homes in white neighborhoods appreciated in value, on average, almost $200,000 more than comparable homes in neighborhoods of color.
Primarily, the reason for the large disparity lies in “contemporary appraisal practices,” according to Howell and Korver-Glenn; in particular, “the use of the sales comparison approach has allowed historical racialized appraisals to influence contemporary values and appraisers’ racialized assumptions about neighborhoods to drive appraisal methods.”
Shame on us.

So on the one hand, Real Estate is another commodity to be bought and sold according to the rules of the market. But it is also housing, and as such a basic human requirement.
And it is heavily tied up with financial markets, as most people need to obtain a mortgage if they wish to purchase their own housing.
I believe that the rules by which we regulate the Real Estate and mortgage financing markets should reflect that in preference over treating real estate solely as a commodity.

Remember: Conservative-owned business fail because of government over-regulation and over-taxation. Liberal-owned businesses fail because the owners are lazy and don’t care about making a profit.

Just read about Katie Ledecky’s silver medal: good heavens, she raced in that 400 meter freestyle, and advanced in the 200 meter freestyle and the 1500 meter freestyle prelims! 2100 meters in one day! And she is an “old” 24 years of age!
“Can you imagine Usain Bolt doing a sprint, then a quarter-mile and then a full mile — in the same day?” Rick wrote. “I think the most Katie has had to swim in a single day is 1,900 meters. We’re aware of one other swimmer who attempted the same three races. While China’s Li Bingjie took bronze in the 400, she failed to advance in either of the other two events.” Rick Maese

What you’ll get is like what happened a few years ago in Ft. Worth: One day, a bunch of open carry whites walked around the city without any problem. A little while later a bunch of open carry blacks walked around with the cops trailing really close behind them looking for an excuse to make an arrest.

Police in Chicago are caught red-handed telling tech firms to alter evidence to fit their preconceived theory of a crime.
Chicago police eventually arrested the 64-year-old Williams and charged him with murder (Williams maintains that Herring was hit in a drive-by shooting). A key piece of evidence in the case is video surveillance footage showing Williams’ car stopped on the 6300 block of South Stony Island Avenue at 11:46 p.m.—the time and location where police say they know Herring was shot.
How did they know that’s where the shooting happened? Police said ShotSpotter, a surveillance system that uses hidden microphone sensors to detect the sound and location of gunshots, generated an alert for that time and place.
Except that’s not entirely true, according to recent court filings.
That night, 19 ShotSpotter sensors detected a percussive sound at 11:46 p.m. and determined the location to be 5700 South Lake Shore Drive—a mile away from the site where prosecutors say Williams committed the murder, according to a motion filed by Williams’ public defender. The company’s algorithms initially classified the sound as a firework. That weekend had seen widespread protests in Chicago in response to George Floyd’s murder, and some of those protesting lit fireworks.
But after the 11:46 p.m. alert came in, a ShotSpotter analyst manually overrode the algorithms and “reclassified” the sound as a gunshot. Then, months later and after “post-processing,” another ShotSpotter analyst changed the alert’s coordinates to a location on South Stony Island Drive near where Williams’ car was seen on camera.
Continued:
Rather than defend ShotSpotter’s technology and its employees’ actions in a Frye hearing, the prosecutors withdrew all ShotSpotter evidence against Williams.

Here’s a local story on the strike’s end:
Weeks-Long Strike Ends After Topeka Workers Approve New Agreement With Frito-Lay
The company made concessions, but the workers found themselves in a much stronger position than any in recent history to get the workplace and the wages they were bargaining for.
The people who make your Cheetos, Fritos, and Ruffles can put in some seriously long hours doing it.“I am a very hard-working woman,” says Hellen Teater, standing on the picket line across from the Frito Lay plant in Topeka this week. “I work like hell.”
She said her job leaves little time to spend with her family.
“Because I’ve been working seven days a week,” Teater said, “like, 84 hours a week.”
Teater is mostly satisfied with the money she makes. She makes double her normal 40 hours, $20-an-hour wage with all the overtime she puts in.
On Friday, the rank-and-file of Local 218 of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers Union voted to approve the latest offer their leadership brought from management, ending a nearly three-week-long strike that made national headlines.
The contract approved by union members would guarantee one day off a week and includes 4% raises over the next two years. It would also end what workers call “suicide shifts,” two 12-hour shifts, with only eight hours off in between.
The company made concessions, but the workers found themselves in a much stronger position than any in recent history to get the workplace and the wages they’re bargaining for.

In a July 2 response to Feaster’s motion, prosecutors argued that the defendant did not have a reasonable belief that McVey was trying to enter his home, adding that “the defendant relies on the notion that his use of force stopped a wildly imaginary attack.” Under Feaster’s theory, “retail security guards may lawfully shoot retreating shoplifters,” stated prosecutor Sean Hill.

Am I the only one who thinks that is some fucked-up bullshit?
Time again to whip out good ol’ Virginia-born Union general George Henry “The Rock of Chickamauga” Thomas to set these assholes straight:
“[T]he greatest efforts made by the defeated insurgents since the close of the war have been to promulgate the idea that the cause of liberty, justice, humanity, equality, and all the calendar of the virtues of freedom, suffered violence and wrong when the effort for southern independence failed. This is, of course, intended as a species of political cant, whereby the crime of treason might be covered with a counterfeit varnish of patriotism, so that the precipitators of the rebellion might go down in history hand in hand with the defenders of the government, thus wiping out with their own hands their own stains; a species of self-forgiveness amazing in its effrontery, when it is considered that life and property—justly forfeited by the laws of the country, of war, and of nations, through the magnanimity of the government and people—was not exacted from them.”

Broward County residents struggling financially because of the COVID-19 pandemic have filed a lawsuit challenging a decision by Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration to cut off federal unemployment money for Floridians. The lawsuit, filed Sunday in Broward County circuit court, contends that the DeSantis administration violated state law last month when it stopped providing $300 a week in federal assistance to jobless people. The money, approved by Congress as part of COVID-19 relief efforts, came on top of state unemployment benefits.
