Somebody has called my spirit from the otherworld!

re: #46 Belafon

I do wish we had Nyet’s perspective on this.

I’m as in the dark about the R-U situation, as the rest of the world, aside from those that get the real intel. As for what moves Putin - sure, this is a semi-collective dictatorship (like in Stalin’s earlier days) in which Putin takes into account not the will of the non-existent 100 families, but of a certain number of people close to him, including the military and businessmen (oligarchs), but given the concentration of power in his hands it is questionable whether they can be a real threat to him, at least unless they act as a group, and that they let him go so far already, at the expense of Russia’s economy, tells volumes. That said, if Putin were to start the war and lose badly, all bets are off - he’s getting old, people are noticing, it would be indeed a good chance for the elites to start from the scratch and blame everything on the bad old guy. Not that they would necessarily succeed, and were he to lose the war with huge consequences, also expect the unrest on the streets, which makes the whole even more unpredictable.

A friend tonight dismissed my view of Russia as basically a failed state; he (a Bernie guy who voted for Hillary with great reluctance) claimed that Putin was really the most powerful man in the world, with a huge military, natural resources that provided much wealth to the nation, and the ability to reconquer those nations that had been part of the former Soviet Union without our being able to respond because we did not want to ignite a World War. Eastern Europe is in Russia’s sphere of influence, and we don’t have the capability of any real reaction to stop him.

And you know what will cause that paper tiger to fold? The moment he can’t exploit those natural resources due to international sanctions. That huge military means nothing if he can’t pay the soldiers to fight or the officers to lead. There’s no commissars there to use fear and coercion to force the men to fight against their wishes. And if he tries to bring all that back, he’s quickly going to find those tanks rolling not into Kiev, but towards the Kremlin.

The entire time the FDR was in office, the Democrats had a supermajority in the Senate and as far as I know, in the house until 1943.

Except for the fact that Southern Democrats were essentially a 3rd party so they couldn’t always be counted on, the Republicans were basically a paper weight until the war was almost over.

Coughlin had a built-in limiter, because the WASP power structure still saw him as part of a large and distrusted minority. He would have a lot more establishment GOP support today. Of course he had a face for radio. His XXI Cent replacement will not.

I give tours of Bacharach, which is (or was until recently) big on US tourists’ radar thanks to Rick Steves. They ask if there is some connection to Burt Bacharach.

Actually there is, he adopted the stage name Bacharach because his family originated from the vicinity.

Then I take them to see the Josefskapelle, The Chapel of St. Joseph, and tell them that they now know the way to San Jose. Then I point out the many passages and alleyways that are so narrow that you could just Walk On By.

And when I am inspired, I tell them about the Karen Carpenter lane, which just gets narrower and narrower until it completely peters out…

Well, since Wordles are becoming taboo, how about the weather? Current air temperature here in the wild north country is -19 °F (-28.3 C), and unfortunately cloudy. Thankfully, though, it looks like snow is out of the forecast for a few days; don’t get me wrong, I love snow, but having to dispose of it 4 times in the last 3 days got a bit old.

This is traditionally the time where we have wind chills approaching -40 (°F and C); mid- to late January is the deepest part of winter here in the wild north country. It’s not supposed to get above 0 °F (-17.8 C) today, and the low tonight is going to be right around where the current air temperature is. This is the time when I like to do a little science demonstration; throwing a pot of boiling water out the back door results in a shower of snow, as the steam instantly freezes into a spray of powder.

The only thing that finally shut down the Bund was that after Pearl Harbor, because Nazi Germany and the Japanese were allies, Germany declared war on us. Literally, they started it. The German ambassador delivered a declaration of war, lovely calligraphy, to the State Department…

(this is where I give my occasional Hooray for Meyer Lansky, who entertained himself between crime sprees by taking carloads of Jewish gangsters to Bund rallies to PUNCH NAZIS!! The Judge they consulted with prior asked them to please don’t kill anybody, we don’t want to give them martyrs. Lansky obliged and instructed his goons of the Rules of Engagement. But with lead pipes, baseball bats, brass knuckles, they filled all the hospitals in Manhattan with Nazis with broken bones.

From the esteemed NY Post on Clapton:

He claimed that he’d been duped into getting the COVID-19 jab by subliminal messaging in pharmaceutical advertising — and urged others not to fall for it.

“Whatever the memo was, it hadn’t reached me,” he said, referring to the “mass formation hypnosis” conspiracy theory, which gained traction in 2021 as part of anti-vaccine propaganda. (In related circles, it’s also been called “mass formation psychosis.”)

Credited to Belgian psychologist Mattias Desmet, the theory essentially points to a sort of mind control that has taken over society, allowing for unscrupulous leaders to easily manipulate populations into, for example, accepting vaccines or wearing face masks.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. You cannot be for civil rights and support the filibuster. They are simply incompatible concepts.

And every time either Manchin or Sinema make the claim that they back civil/voting rights, they’re lying. They’re putting a racist procedure to deny civil and voting rights above that of those actual civil and voting rights.

[Embedded content]

imo it’s worse because they are not protecting or supporting the filibuster.
filibuster means talking. i am not being pedandic.

this new thing - declaring a filibuster and not having to stand and talk is a, more or less, contemporary morph.

though it’s not a ‘variant’. it’s a fundamentally different mechanism and it has fundamentally different effects. it should have a new name.

no one seems to want to recognize that maintaining the current status quo is not protecting the filibuster and again, is way, way worse.

This is great, but Spotify is paying Rogan a shit ton of money because he brings in large numbers of subscribers. I’m going out on a limb here, but I can’t help but think Neil Young doesn’t have those numbers and Spotify isn’t going to beg him to stay or do a thing to rein Rogan in or get rid of him. Now if a large number of artists follow suit and the numbers take a hit, it could have an effect.

First thing I did was buy a wireless charging pad for my wife’s Tesla when we got it so we didn’t have two charging cables to deal with. Then I bought a two phone charging pad for the kitchen and one for my desk at work that I haven’t really needed for two years.

It’s nice not having to replace charging cables every six months because they break down.

I got my wife a pair of these. The case recharges the buds several times over, and it charges on the flat pad itself so you don’t need to keep the charging cord.

They’re under $40 and work just as well as the brand name ones. Wasn’t sure she’d like them so we started with these. They do the trick.

And if antivaxxing were really about a fear of needles, what does it say when a vaccine jab is a very narrow gauge needle prick lasting a few moments, versus an iv infusion that can last 45-60 minutes with a wide gauge needle placed into the forearm or wrist?

Monoclonals don’t work against omicron.
Monoclonals don’t work against covid if you don’t administer them early enough in the infection.
DeSantis has made testing more difficult, which means it takes more time to find out if you’re sick with covid, closing the window for administering the monoclonals.

In other words, every step of the DeSantis approach is disastrous and does nothing to stop/slow spread of covid. It does actually appear that DeSantis was trying to manipulate stock prices of the company producing said monoclonals.

Per Worldometer, the United States will cross 900 000 officially reported Covid deaths by this weekend. Only one other county has more than half a million (Brazil - 620 000ish) although India will get there soon (they are currently at 490 000 and change).

For comparison, Canada, a country with roughly 1/10th the population of the U.S., has reported about 33 000 deaths. That means in theory if we had managed the pandemic as well as they have, we’d currently have fewer than half a million deaths instead of rapidly approaching seven figures.

Missus just read me a great story from Tim Flannery (former SF Giants 3rd base coach). Apparently, when he managed a AAA team, he got ejected early for arguing with the umpire. As he sat stewing in his office, the team mascot walked by. He called him over, told him his night was through, and put the costume on to go down and lead the crowd in a 7th inning stretch “Louie Louie”…then he went to the dugout and finished coaching the game.

His message: Don’t tell me masks don’t work.

Want to learn about how to promote COVID-19 vaccination for children in your community? Want to build your skills to have conversations about the vaccine?

COVID Vaccine Ambassador Training: How to Talk to Parents is a new free course on Coursera from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, International Vaccine Access Center, and Consortium for School-Based Health Solutions.

This online course aims to provide “vaccine ambassadors” with the tools to discuss concerns about COVID-19 vaccines with people in their communities.

The self-paced course teaches adults how to have respectful and empathetic conversations with parents and guardians who remain hesitant about vaccination for their children, even if they are vaccinated themselves.

Hospitals are increasingly asking staff who have the coronavirus to work while potentially infectious, underscoring how the hyper-transmissible omicron variant has sidelined employees, overwhelmed resources and upended nearly two years of strict protocols.

even if you’re triple vaxxed, masked and fully clad in ppe, if you’re constantly exposed to infected people or conditions, of course your chances of getting it are way higher

more exposure, more chances, no matter how careful you are.

long before covid, lots of people went into hospitals for one thing and caught all kinds of unrelated infections. some even died. hospitals; the clean and sanitary places.

This one. Link

Just a little FYI, I got one of those and they require a special wall plug. My standard Apple plugs, for example, do not work. You need one that is more for a computer than say an iPhone. this one does not include the plug. Those are often around $20.00.

I got one of these to find that when it arrived it told me I needed something I don’t have (extra to give to this one thing).

Again, just FYI.

I don’t like needles in general but I’ll take them if I have to. I have not even FELT any of the three I’ve gotten for Covid vaccines.

I felt the third one, and oddly, that’s the one for which I had really the side effects of least duration. My shoulder joints were a little achey yesterday, I had a headache that was so slight it barely qualified on Sunday, and Saturday night I had mild chills during the night that I only noticed because I did have to wake up once to pee.

Yes, that’s part of the brilliance. The other part is the extremely simple design that allows people to share their results, so it got social media traction without having to write any code to interface with social media.

It has a minor bug. If a letter repeats in a word, only the first instance is color coded.
If the word is orange, moons would have one yellow o and one grey one.

From the Wordle Unlimited (and no, I will not bore you with these in the future).

There is a monoclonal that works, just not the ones that were widely available and successful against other variants.

TBF The number of deaths in India is significantly understated. Best on best estimates there have been millions of deaths there.

Oh no, not asymptomatic. She is getting better though. Basically had what amounts to strep throat - sore throat, stuffy sinuses, lost her voice for a day.

Glad to hear it’s not a bad case. I had the sore throat and blocked sinuses Saturday. I don’t have any tests yet, so I’ll give it 10 days before going out in public, even though I’ve felt fine since Sunday.

Teddy's Person  Jan 25, 2022 • 9:37:01am

The torrent of sludge careening down Bullshit Mountain is overwhelming me today. I feel I’m drowning in a toxic stew of malignance, corruption and power hungry assholes. The assault on teachers and education is the thing putting me over the top stress wise this morning. Magaland is focused on K-12 right now, but there already exists a cottage industry on the right where people like Ben Shapiro and Charlie Kirk report college professors for hurting the feelings of their right-wing students. I fear this project is about to go into overdrive.

Washington State has sunshine laws that make it fairly easy for people to get information about state employees. The syllabus for each of my courses is publicly available on the college website. At the beginning of the fall quarter, I received an email request for the syllabus for one of my courses. The sender didn’t identify themselves as a potential or former student and did not provide a reason for wanting the document. It gave me a weird vibe, and I just ignored the email. I thought about talking to some colleagues about the email but felt I might be overreacting.

One positive outcome of the rightwing howler monkeys screeching about CRT is that my students are now more aware of the impact of race. I’ve noticed in the fall and now the winter quarter that my students’ reading of people like David Walker, Frederick Douglass, Ida B Wells, Booker T Washington and WEB DuBois is a little more sophisticated and takes systemic racism into account without much prompting. Full disclosure, I live and teach in Hippielandia so my students are mostly left leaning. But as we all know, the right-wingers can be a loud, obnoxious minority.

In other news, I almost got the…intimidating as hell…German postal employee to laugh today. More accurately, she sort of cracked what was almost a smile. I handed her one of my hand-built custom-sized packages that I occasionally have to resort to in order to avoid having to spend money to send someone mostly empty air, with the comment “this is why they wouldn’t let me wrap my own christmas presents as a child.” Almost, she smiled. ALMOST. Then I had to go back in and tell her she fucked up the zip code on two packages and was sending my stuff to Spokane instead of Portland. That went over well…..

I’m reminded of this every time I hear the fascists babble…

In early 1965, while King was jailed in Selma, Alabama, Malcolm traveled to Selma, where he had a private meeting with Coretta Scott King. “I didn’t come to Selma to make his job difficult,” he assured Coretta. “I really did come thinking that I could make it easier. If the white people realize what the alternative is, perhaps they will be more willing to hear Dr. King” (Scott King “My Life with Martin Luther King, Jr., 1969”, 256).

The suspects in an alleged plot to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer talked about sniping her armed guards, taking hostages, and hog-tying the governor, prosecutors said.

United States Attorney Andrew Birge, along with Assistant United States Attorneys Nils Kessler and Jonathan Roth, filed documents on Friday in response to the defense wanting to dismiss the indictment against Adam Fox, Barry Croft Jr., Daniel Harris, Kaleb Franks and Brandon Caserta.

The defense argued that informants entrapped the suspects, who “had no interest in a kidnapping plot.”

But in Friday’s documents, prosecutors said in order to prove that the suspects were entrapped, “there must be undisputed evidence of inducement and a patently clear absence of predisposition.”

“The defendants have alleged, but not proven, any inducement,” the documents stated. “More importantly, the government has yet to put its ample evidence of predisposition to the finder of fact.”

WaPo: Steve Bannon was deplatformed. An obscure media mogul keeps him on the air.

Two years after being cast out of the White House, Stephen K. Bannon spoke from a steep, dusty hill outside El Paso, asking for donations. The former investment banker and Hollywood producer wanted cash in 2019 for his latest quest, to privately build President Donald Trump’s stalled border wall.

Not many news outlets were paying attention — except for one focusing on his every word.

It wasn’t Fox News or Newsmax. It wasn’t even Breitbart News, the far-right website Bannon once led, using it to help remake the GOP and elect Trump.

The coverage came from an upstart network run by a little-known media mogul in Colorado, a felon with a record of unpaid taxes and a family history marked by tragedy and violence. The mogul, Robert J. Sigg, found news value in Bannon’s mission to the desert, which ultimately resulted in fraud charges.

When Bannon launched his own talk show in the fall of 2019, calling it “War Room,” he quickly handed over its distribution to Sigg.

More than two years later, the arrangement has paid off for both men. Sigg used “War Room” as a springboard for an expanded network of conservative hosts — bringing him the commercial opportunity he sought.

The network, Real America’s Voice, helped sustain Bannon despite his removal from YouTube, Spotify and other mainstream platforms. It brings his show into as many as 8 million homes hooked up to Dish satellite television, many in rural, conservative areas without reliable cable coverage.

The rise of Real America’s Voice, built around Bannon and distant from the traditional power structures of cable television and talk radio, reveals how the country’s fractured media landscape has empowered unconventional actors following market incentives toward more and more extreme content.

that’s because catholics, like basically all orthodox branches of christianity, have a systematic theology that they’ve worked out and struggled over for 2,000 years. I may not want to be a southern baptist (though I work for them), but their theology isn’t complete rubbish. They make some silly errors and some that are grievous, like rationalizing slavery and trying to fit a gay square into a straight hole (or maybe trying desperately NOT to fit the gay square into the straight hole), but at least they’re mostly sane. And they and I can get together and snicker at the Bob Jonesists up the road.

Someone isn’t Happy.

Peter Dinklage is none too pleased with Disney’s upcoming “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves” remake, which he accused of being insensitive to dwarves. The “Game of Thrones” star dropped the bombshell while promoting his movie “Cyrano” on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast, Entertainment Weekly reported.

“I’m just like, what are you doing?” the 52-year-old Emmy winner told Maron of the reboot, which will star “West Side Story” actress Rachel Zegler, who recently called herself a “white Latina,” as Snow White.

Dinklage, who has achondroplasia, a type of dwarfism that results in him being 4 feet 5, found the movie especially hypocritical as they were “very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White.”

“You’re progressive in one way, but then you’re still making that f-king backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together, what the f-k are you doing, man?” the “Station Agent” actor spluttered. “Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me.”
