Time for an update from Alaska:

Received my mail in ballot for the jungle primary for Don Youngs seat. Here’s what a ballot with 48 candidates looks like;

And just vote for one!!

Also this week the cruise plague ships started arriving. Covid’s a’ coming!!

Passengers on Alaska-bound Carnival cruise ship say COVID outbreak overwhelmed crew as they docked in Seattle

To finish off the week, my wife and I got our 2nd booster shots today. So far, no aftereffects.

Wow! Two threads back now but it involves an important resource for these times, so with your indulgence, here it is:

re: #106 Decatur Deb

Decades ago there was a tremendously detailed website from the Federation of American Scientists. It was focused on National Security/Department of Defense issues. It included a large section on Agricultural Defense programs like Daedalus. Someone was thinking way ahead.

(Think they might have morphed into globalsecurity.com.)
____________
.org rather than .com globalsecurity.org
It is indeed the old crowd from FAS, including John Pike, who used to make lots of tv appearances back when the nutworks at least pretended to value real expertise. My favorite though is Charles Vick, chief technical analyst. Back during the Cold War Mr. Vick, a private citizen, used open sources and personal contacts to reach astoundingly accurate conclusions about the Soviet space program and rocketry. These were often at odds with official speculation but were vindicated after the Soviet Union collapsed and hard facts became available in the west
He produced accurate drawings of the failed N-1 Moon rocket and was the first western analyst to determine that it had 30 first stage engines. He was also the first analyst to speculate publicly that the “Proton’ (D-1) heavy booster had originally been designed as a giant ICBM to lob a 100MT warhead at the United States. Officials scoffed at this (D was equivalent to the Saturn I) but it, too, was later confirmed.

Looking at the lottery spreadsheet… and the annuity rate went up. Again.

Annuity rates are now the highest they have been since the earliest lottery records to which I have access (middle 2014.)

What this means: bad news for anyone concerned about inflation.

If the annuity writers feel confident to offer the rates they are now, they must believe that bond rates are going to go up and stay there for a while.

Which happens in inflationary times.

I cannot over-emphasize how important this is to the elections coming up.

It is easy to get worked up over the culture war, but time and again it has been shown that Americans vote their wallets.

What he’s saying: “We can’t be an institution that can be bullied into giving you just the outcomes you want. The events from earlier this week are a symptom of that,” Thomas said at the 11th Circuit Judicial Conference, per Reuters.

He added that he is worried about a “different attitude of the young,” which he said fails to show a respect for the law that was sustained by previous generations, the Post writes.
“Recent events have shown this major change,” the court’s longest-serving justice said.
Eroding respect for institutions and the rule of law “bodes ill for a free society,” he added.

How dare this motherfucker talk about “rule of law” and “respect for institutions” and SCOTUS not giving people the outcomes they want.

The Federalist Society sure as hell is getting the outcome it wants.

And he and his wife sure had respect for institutions on 1/6/2021.

Finally, conservative law is a tool to privilege the oppressors and burden the oppressed. As such it deserves nothing but the deepest contempt.

This was the line that jumped out at me:

According to the outlet, the Lee County school district says Scott was fired over not following the curriculum as mandated by the state

Mostly because of years of hearing Bible-thumpers scream about how teachers were not allowed to teach “Judeo-Christian” things in class like creationism in science courses or Bible stories in history class. They couldn’t even *gasp!* lead their class in prayer! How can our kids have strong moral fiber if their teacher couldn’t teach them about this country’s “Judeo-Christian” heritage?!

I’m a bit punchy after a long week of bad news and irritation at work, but my post above did lead to an interesting idea for a political comedy skit.

The basic idea is a cross between Samuel L Jackson and the famous “Who’s on first” skit, with the six Republican supreme court justices being “this motherfucker” “that motherfucker” “you, that motherfucker hiding in the bushes over there”(Roberts, of course) “another motherfucker” “the other motherfucker” and finally “I have had it with these motherfuckers on this motherfucking court” (Alito).

Thomas knows he’s talking out of his ass, because that’s why he was put on the Court in the first place. He was there to fill what the GQP to this day still sneers at when they’re not exploiting it: a racial quota. They feared the political fallout of replacing Thurgood Marshall with a white judge, so they compromised and found the most bought-and-paid-for black judge they could on the bench to replace him.

If Marshall were alive today, he’d slap the shit out of Thomas while reminding him that if it wasn’t for the “different attitude of the youth” back in the day, men like them wouldn’t even have seats at the table, let alone on the bench of the highest court in the land.

New Poll Reveals Warning Signs for GOP on Abortion
politicalwire.com

A new Yahoo News/YouGov poll found that registered voters initially preferred a generic Democrat over a generic Republican by 5 percentage points when asked how they would vote in their district if the congressional election were being held today, 44% to 39%.

But when voters were asked to choose instead between a “pro-choice Democrat” and a “pro-life Republican,” GOP support fell to 31% while Democratic support held steady — more than doubling the gap between the two candidates, to 13 percentage points.

They’re not gonna all be fire-breathin’ Southern Baptists preachers up at the pulpit, promising eternal damnation for “harlots” for “living in sin.” There’s gonna be a lot of political chameleons like Vance who are gonna get fed talking points and false statistics to win over the suburban white vote.

That usual GOP strategy of lying like hell will probably be very effective for a while.

But we’re going to see horror stories from red states with abortion bans. My hope is that those horror stories + the looming threat of a nationwide abortion ban, is enough for the Democrats to finally make significant progress with the white women demographic.

Tip of the fucking iceberg. Way they figure it, this Court just needs a case in front of them and an excuse. So look forward to seeing other blood red states proposing new restrictions or just outright bans on gay marriage, if not by year’s end then with the start of new legislative sessions first thing next year.

To be grisly about it, there’s a more lurid variety of death and injury from botched abortions than Covid, and if it bleed it leads is still an iron rule of the media.

But it is true that the media is in enemy hands, so I sure hope D strategists are actually taking this into account, rather than just counting on fair coverage of their proposals etc.

My worry is that the standard Dem “putting all eggs in one basket” approach, in this case the Roe bill which pretty much everybody knows is not going to pass and (last I checked) will include at least three Dem “Nay” votes. The reason for my worry? That the party leadership will want to avoid playing hardball and making abortion too much of an election issue because they fear “pro-life” Dems coming under fire.

My personal assumption is that any troops paraded through Red Square will be from those units that are maintained for home defense purposes and thus won’t have been mauled by the fighting in Ukraine, riding around in their tanks and IFVs as though there is no real war going on and Russia remains triumphant. And that the only chance the public has of seeing wounded soldiers is those few handpicked by the brass for their loyalty who will happily smile for the cameras and shaking Vlad’s fat fingers as he hands them a worthless medal and commends them for their “heroism.”

I sure hope nobody spends too much time or energy on a Federal abortion bill. It won’t pass, and even if it does SCOTUS will kill it.

Regrettably, the only game in town for abortion is the decades-long effort for a constitutional amendment (i.e., a revised ERA with an explicit abortion clause).

Not just an explicit abortion clause; an explicit bodily autonomy clause. No forced organ donations. No forced sterilization. And fuck trying to tie it to the 14th Amendment; this is a 13th Amendment matter.

Don’t tie it to any other amendment. Any new amendment, once ratified, is just as much a part of the constitution as any other part of the text. No more of those penumbras and emanations every wingnut law student loves to mock.

I don’t usually put much stock in polls that are taken far away from elections (although this one might mean more because it’s an issue a lot of voters understand and care about). The existence of these polls, though, is useful to us because the GOP should be panicking and breaking into factional fights because of them.

And “respect for institutions”, boo hoo fucking hoo. It’s earned, and Thomas is just upset that the American people aren’t just smiling and swallowing whatever crap their dress-wearing betters deign to shovel out to them. He didn’t seem to be too upset about his wife’s pals invading Congress, killing cops, and smearing shit on Capitol walls, though.

The GQP started this week figuring that they still had a month and change before the ruling dropped, and had plans for that day. The country would wake up to the news of the ruling dropping, would tune in at lunch to Kev and/or Mitch holding a presser to announce that the GQP was already planning to introduce legislation in light of the ruling, and get home to the evening news of “Dems in Disarray” as Congressional and National Dems alike scrambled to settle on a talking point. They probably thought their stars lucky when they heard that the 1/6 Commission was moving its public hearings to late June, shit-eatting grins upon their faces as they imagined the negative news from those hearings being drowned out by “violent protests” over the Roe ruling.

Instead, now they’re the ones scrambling as they try to keep the party from running off into two different directions, half “outraged” that their carefully laid plan is in ruins, and the other half of the party that wants to start shackling women before the ruling is actually in the record. And they’re now worried shitless that the draft will be altered in such ways as to only overturn Roe and not other rulings that they’ve been working for many years to strike down. Plus it happened in the first week of May, when there are primary races still up in the air on both sides, the outcome of which may now shift in the wake of this draft becoming public.

Sounds like fun, good for Apple.

China’s main strategy for minimizing damage to its economy amid the rolling lockdowns is for companies and factories to operate in a “closed loop” system, in which workers live and sleep on-site or in nearby accommodation that they’re shuttled to. This has helped Shanghai restart production at more than 70% of its industrial manufacturing facilities, while 90% of 660 “key” industrial companies have resumed output, officials said this week.

But it is true that the media is in enemy hands, so I sure hope D strategists are actually taking this into account, rather than just counting on fair coverage of their proposals etc.

20 6 ~7 year olds dead at Sandy Hook and it only increased gun sales. I doubt even 10’s of thousands of dead women will change anything because we’re talking about true believers.

The problem here is not that they might not care that it’s a war crime. I’m sure that the average MAGAt on the street doesn’t know or care. They are idiots, and not in charge of anything so it doesn’t matter. The Problem is that it doesn’t even occur to the ones in power when they are that it’s a war crime. That they can seriously suggest this in a policy meeting and *need* to be reminded by an adult that it’s a war crime shows that they shouldn’t be anywhere near the ability to put such a suggestion into action.

It also doesn’t occur to them that most of what they say they want to do about the “border crisis” is a violation of several international agreements and treaties.

If Marshall were alive today, he’d slap the shit out of Thomas while reminding him that if it wasn’t for the “different attitude of the youth” back in the day, men like them wouldn’t even have seats at the table, let alone on the bench of the highest court in the land.

as an added bonus, marshall would be played by sidney poitier.

Nuclear missiles have rolled through Moscow’s Red Square in a chilling warning to the West as dictator Vladimir Putin prepares for his annual Victory Day parade on Monday.

The warring president will hope to celebrate a triumph in Ukraine at the annual celebration, which marks Russia’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War Two, raising fears of increased attacks on the war-torn country over this weekend.

The thermonuclear RS-24 Yars ballistic missile - which experts believe can can carry up to 10 warheads - was seen taking pride and joy as it was driven past rows of armed guards on a 16-wheeler vehicle during rehearsals on Saturday.

Don’t tie it to any other amendment. Any new amendment, once ratified, is just as much a part of the constitution as any other part of the text. No more of those penumbras and emanations every wingnut law student loves to mock.

There is no way that this will become a Constitutional amendment anytime in the near future. Amendments require confirmation by 3/4 of the states; every state that today has a law or will soon adopt a law that criminalizes abortion when Roe is overturned will NOT sign on to such an amendment.

Police pension fund challenges Musk’s Twitter buyout

Elon Musk’s $44 billion buyout of Twitter Inc. was challenged in a lawsuit by a Florida pension fund that argues the deal can’t close before 2025 because Musk was an “interested shareholder” in the social networking platform.

The Orlando Police Pension Fund filed suit in Delaware Chancery Court on Thursday. According to the complaint, Musk had agreements with other major Twitter shareholders — including founder Jack Dorsey — to rely on their holdings when offering to take the company private last month. Those arrangements triggered a Delaware law that calls for a three-year delay in closing such deals, the fund claims.

I remember when the Campus Crusade for Christ people started coming around with that line in the late 70’s. I regularly told them that although a majority of Americans profess some form of Christianity, that does not make the Bible anything more than a personal guide for one’s own morality and conscience and does not at all make it a document based on which should be governed.

The current one now with the black family is actually great. Honestly, I think it’s better than the original series.

A couple of episodes ago, there was a nice Easter egg tying both series together…

the black kid’s older brother is a disabled Vietnam vet. The battle in which he was disabled, his best friend from his unit was killed and he collected the guy’s family photo that he carried in his pocket every day.

now that he’s mostly done with his medical rehab and ready to get back to life, he’s writing a letter to his friend’s family, sending them the photo and writing about how brave he was, what a hero, and repeating some of the stories he used to tell about how much he loved his family and missed them…

the photo is of Winnie Cooper, Kevin’s crush whose brother’s death they were informed of in the pilot episode of the original show.

re: #138 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

I remember when the Campus Crusade for Christ people started coming around with that line in the late 70’s. I regularly told them that although a majority of Americans profess some form of Christianity, that does not make the Bible anything more than a personal guide for one’s own morality and conscience and does not at all make it a document based on which should be governed.

And they don’t even follow what Jesus said a nation following God would look like anyway.

They want a nation run by Biblical Patriarchs.

Hell to the yeah!

This is based on my own experience of jumping immediately to the front of the line when the adoption agencies discovered we didn’t require these features.
