So Twitter decides it has to run this headline:

The US military did not arrest Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack in April 2022, multiple fact-checkers report

And it goes to a Snopes report.

Now the story is obviously false but Snopes has to label it as “satire” for the people who apparently can’t comprehend what they read.

But the sad part is this: the website in question, even though it is obviously full of fictional stories, has hundreds of comments on their stories from people who think the stories are true.

The website in question appears to be some right-wing ideation site, where they project the worst possible things.

Satire is a mysterious word for people who only understand “fake news.’

The site Real Raw News appears to promote the fantasies that circulate among the Trump base.

Its About section starts by saying:

Real Raw News tried to bring light to topics often ignored by others.

It includes a disclaimer:

Information on this website is for informational and educational and entertainment purposes. This website contains humor, parody, and satire. We have included this disclaimer for our protection, on the advice on legal counsel.

It appears to me to be pulling a Tucker Carlson or Alex Jones; the disclaimer is for protection to avoid prosecution but really you should believe what I’m saying.

The bots are out in force on Twitter again.

Almost every account Tweeting about Dinesh D’ouchebags crockumentary has the same copy-and-paste bullshit in them.

“Just watched Dinesh D’Souza’s “2000 Mules” and all I can say is there’s irrefutable proof President Trump won the election even without considering all the machine vote flipping. 2000 felonies caught on camera at a minimum.”

I’ve seen hundreds of these in the past half hour.

“the moral degradation of the west… cancelling thousands of years of traditions…we won’t give up our traditions” etc etc.

This leans on some very old Slavophile ideology: Moscow sees itself as the Third Rome and the True Heir and Keeper of the Christian Culture and Civilization after it collapsed in Rome and Constantinople (because of moral degradation and loss of traditions, of course).

Its flyover was much-hyped, but Vladimir Putin’s ‘Doomsday Plane’—a specially equipped jet from which the Russian elite can allegedly run a nuclear war--was conspicuous by its absence at Russia’s Victory Day parade in Moscow on Monday,” the Daily Beast reports.

“It was reported that the flyover of the plane was canceled because of bad weather, however footage showed Moscow enjoying a pleasant and sunny spring day and weather services suggested there was wind of just 3 mph.”

Apparently they cant run a nuclear war in “bad” weather

A Texas man is on the run after being caught on home surveillance video allegedly burglarizing a residence and running from police, but not before he mowed the victim’s back and front yards, according to the Port Arthur Police Department.

Marcus Renard Hubbard is accused of burglarizing the southeast Texas home on the evening of April 1.

Home surveillance video shows the suspect taking a push lawnmower from the home, filling up its tank with gas, then mowing the victim’s lawn.

Officers arrived at the home and chased the suspect, who pulled the lawnmower behind him before ditching the lawn equipment in a nearby alley and continuing his escape.

steve_davis  May 9, 2022 • 4:48:29am

first comment this morning: anybody still making a list of “best 300/1000/n+1 classical recordings to listen to you before you die”? I don’t see an updated penguin list from anytime after 2011, which means, I assume, they probably saw the writing on the wall and realized people weren’t really buying cd’s anymore.

second comment: abortion is not going to create some kind of blue wave in November, because a surprising number of typical democratic voters are ambivalent about it and won’t be driven to the polls over its ban. HOWEVER, there will be at least one senate seat that will get decided over it, and if we’re lucky, it will go our way and possibly give Democrats one more senate seat for the majority than they have now. And IF THAT HAPPENS, look for Build Back Better to return. I suspect the House is hopeless, thanks to gerrymandering, and the never to be underestimated collective stupidity of the American people.

re: #37 Dangerman

Or in any weather.

The whole thing is falling apart on Putin and his desperation to show that the Russian military is competent and firing on all cylinders is revealing all the more problems. It’s clear that they can’t keep their gear in proper working condition and corruption through the ranks shows.

Putin’s imperialist war against Ukraine is showing that while Russia can pulverize a city to ashes with artillery, it’s lacking in the ability to do much more than that. Against a lesser power, that is usually enough, but with Ukraine not only capturing Russian gear, but getting lots of new Western gear, Ukraine is not only holding its own, but can take the fight to the Russians in ways the Russians can’t deal with.

Russia’s left trying to use propaganda to claim that they’ve got nukes and saber rattling, which is all but an empty threat - we know they have nukes and the means to deliver them. That’s been the case since the 1950s. New missile delivery systems don’t change that. Having a flyby of a AC3 plane doesn’t change that.

But, when you say you’re going to fly that plane at a major parade and then claim that bad weather kept it grounded despite perfect flying conditions around Moscow, the gig is up. The Russian military appears to be a hollow shell.

I would love to see Putin order a general mobilization and watch what happens in Russia. It won’t help them in Ukraine; it would take months to train new conscripts, and they wouldn’t be able to equip them anyway.

I expect he is going to slowly ramp up the shelling and bombing of civilian targets to put more pressure on Ukraine to come to terms in order to “prevent needless deaths”.

that word would have had a completely different context in 1940 than it does today. I’m sure there were lesbians in the military, but a woman calling someone a “girlfriend” would have been viewed in that context as “a girl who is a dear friend” rather than “a lover.” Just as my mother used to talk about someone “making love” to a gal, which in her depression-era parlance meant going through some romantic courtship ritual, like flirting with someone in conversation.

I heard somewhere yesterday that the howitzers that the US shipped are now being deployed and that they have a range that is about 7-8 miles farther than the best the Russians have (with much superior precision). The Ukrainians are trained up and ready to go. Should be helpful in keeping Russian artillery at bay.

While true so far as it goes, women’s military and paramilitary organizations were a way for women who did not want to marry or otherwise deal with men to have a safe place. There is the classic story of Eisenhower (Newsweek 6/20/93):

“Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower received some unsettling news while he was in occupied Germany after World War II. There were, he was told, a significant number of lesbians in his Women’s Army Corps (WAC) command. He called in Sgt. Johnnie Phelps and ordered her to get a list of all the lesbians in the battalion. “We’ve got to get rid of them,” he barked. Phelps said she’d check into it. But, she told the general, “when you get the list back, my name’s going to be first.” Eisenhower’s secretary then interrupted. “Sir, if the general pleases, Sergeant Phelps will have to be second on the list, because mine will be first.” Dumbfounded, Ike realized he’d lose many of his key personnel if he persisted. “Forget that order,” he told Phelps.”

It was even more true of the WASPs.

Doctors, Pregnancy, Childbirth and Abortion during the Third Reich
-Tessa Chelouche, MD

Abstract
This paper does not attempt to deal with the legitimate ethical or moral debate on abortion. Utilizing abortion as a subject I will show how science and medicine in general, and abortion in particular, were used as weapons of mass destruction by Nazi physicians in their zeal to comply with the political climate of the time. Nazi policy on abortion and childbirth was just one of the methods devised and designed to ensure the extermination of those whom the Nazis deemed had “lives not worth living.” Physicians implemented these policies, not with the fate of their patients in mind, but rather in the name of the “state.” When discussing pregnancy, abortion and childbirth during the Holocaust it is imperative to include an essay of how these issues affected the Jewish prisoner doctors in the ghettos and camps. Nazi policy dictated their actions too. From an extensive search of their testimonies, I conclude that for these doctors ethical discourse comprised a fundamental component of their functioning. I do not propose to judge them in any way and one should not, in my opinion, argue whether their behavior was or was not morally acceptable under such duress; nevertheless, unlike their Nazi counterparts, a key theme in their testimonies was
to “keep their medical values.”

(Looks, shudders) yes, that’s a goddamn [the serious expletives are deleted] M-60 barrel.

Once upon a lifetime ago, first as a unit armorer and later as an Infantry NCO I learned to loath that piss-poor disaster of a machine gun. The only weapon I hated more than the M-16 (which is why I own an AK instead but I digress…)

The US Army had a series of seriously horrifically bad small arms in the 50’s ~ 80’s. The M14, the M60, the M73, the M85, and others. Of them, only the M60 could be usable for a short time when brand new but it would shake itself to death fairly quickly by weapon standards.

The kneepads on the pup are cute though.

And now for something completely different…

The Pop Song That’s Uniting India and Pakistan

A few years ago, the musician Ali Sethi was driving through Punjab, behind a jingle truck—the long-haul trucks known in his native Pakistan for their filigreed paint designs—when he spotted a phrase in florid Punjabi calligraphy on its back. “Agg lavaan teriya majbooriya nu,” it said—a call to “set fire to your compulsions.” It’s not uncommon to glimpse bits of verse, or dire warnings—against straying eyes or losing yourself in the big world out there—among the fluorescent parrots and tropical fruit schemes of jingle trucks. But Sethi couldn’t stop thinking about that phrase.

It inspired the first line of “Pasoori,” the thirty-seven-year-old’s latest single, a joyous, dance-fuelled hit that has drawn more than a hundred million views on YouTube since its release three months ago and is playing on the radio everywhere, from the United Arab Emirates to Canada. The song is stealthily subversive: a traditional raga—the classical Indian framework for musical improvisation—has been laid over an infectious beat that sounds South Asian, Middle Eastern, and, improbably, reggaetón, all at once. Even if you don’t understand the lyrics, you can tell that it’s a song about longing. “If your love is poison, I’ll drink it in a flurry,” Sethi sings in Punjabi with smooth anguish, in a rousing duet with Shae Gill, a Pakistani singer and Instagram star. “It’s my favorite genre,” a friend of mine said. “A love song that sounds like a threat.”

If you can find a cheaper copy than what you’ll find over at Amazon (or check your local library), I recommend Misfire by William Hallahan. That whole era of US Army small arms procurement could be summed up in two words: Cussed stupidity. Hence the legend that the Army never really wanted the M16 and instead had it forced upon them.

My dad is a bit like that, though instead of getting my mom a microwave, he would have bought her a new necklace or earrings. If you think there’s nothing wrong with that, the reason I bring it up is my mom is a very practical person who received so much jewelry from the man over the years that she has no real place to put any new additions. He insists that it’s “wrong” to buy her appliances or things for the house as gifts, even though I, my sister, and my mother have reminded him that she’s totally cool with it and would actually like him to go that route.

The kicker? The gift he got her for their first anniversary? A crock pot. Something she reminds him of whenever the topic comes up, which he defends as knowing she loves cooking…to which she always points out that what he loves is the pot roasts she cooks.

Nick Cave’s son Jethro Lazenby has died aged 30, the musician said today - seven years after the star’s 15-year-old son Arthur fell to his death from a cliff in Brighton.

Jethro, who lived in Melbourne, had been released from prison on bail two days before he died, having been jailed for kneeing his mother in the face during a row over cigarettes - leaving her ‘bruised and bleeding’.

‘With much sadness, I can confirm that my son, Jethro, has passed away,’ Cave said in a statement this afternoon. ‘We would be grateful for family privacy at this time.’

Perhaps it’s indecorous to say, but my heart is filled with something else, too. Incandescent rage. Because my mother was stolen from me by the disease of mental illness, by the wounds she carried from a lifetime of injustices that started when she was a girl. Because she was a girl.

“My mama was an extraordinary parent under duress: She showed my sister and me the power of having a voice and using it, and there has been no greater lesson. But motherhood happened to her without her consent. She experienced an unintended pregnancy at age 17, and that led her down a road familiar to so many adolescent mothers, including poverty and gender-based violence.

“Forgive me if my grief isn’t tidy. When I think about my mother, I am awash in the painful specifics.”

While true so far as it goes, women’s military and paramilitary organizations were a way for women who did not want to marry or otherwise deal with men to have a safe place.

And of course, why are New York and San Francisco the two gay capitals of America?

That is where troops from the European and Pacific theater got mustered out of the army.

They had gone off to war thinking they were freaks and weirdos and discovered other people in the army who shared their tastes and inclinations, and were not about to go back to Lodgepole, Nebraska or Paducah, Tennessee and continue to live as outcasts, so they settled where were able to be part of a community.

Must be the same writer.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Thursday said he used the wrong words in his comments about Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch outside the Supreme Court on Wednesday, saying they were not a threat.

Schumer’s remarks on the Senate floor came after a slew of condemnations coming from Republicans - including some who want to censure the New York Democrat - and a rebuke from the high court’s chief justice.

“Now, I should not have used the words I used yesterday. They didn’t come out the way I intended to,” Schumer said Thursday morning. “My point was that there would be political consequences, political consequences for President (Donald) Trump and Senate Republicans if the Supreme Court, with the newly confirmed justices, stripped away a woman’s right to choose.”

Schumer did not appear to directly apologize, and instead accused Republicans of “gross distortion” and “manufacturing outrage.”

Yeah, I notice a lot of conservative university grads love to say that stupid shit. Like most things that define their ideology, it’s yet another form of pulling up the ladder so others can’t use it.

Meanwhile, as I pointed out earlier today, its mainstream political discourse in the GOP to explicitly threaten to shoot government officials.

The default local GOP legislator ad seems to involve them firing weapons at symbols of US government or piles of documents symbolizing legislation.

VirtualBox fixes those small issues… ;)

One of the issues I’ve run into with VB is GPUs. You can’t share part of a GPU. So, if you want to use a GPU inside a VB instance, you will need two cards.

re: #230 William Lewis

I have one app and one bit of hardware that keeps me on windows right now - Capture One doesn’t play well in VM while at least my steam games will. Meanwhile my wifi won’t run on FreeBSD (though it will on Linux with a kernel of 5.1.12+ so I am considering Debian very seriously).

But after a couple of weeks of Windows 11 the best thing I can say is that, yes, Windog still sucks really really hard.

i’m tethered for two reasons:
- tax software - nothing serious runs on linux. nor through wine, vmware, virtualbox, etc

- scanner (i could find a linux scanner, just havent got around to it yet)

I had a big blowup with a Log Cabin Republican university buddy over tuition fees and student debt when I reminded him that we both benefited from subsidized in-state tuition.

Let me guess, “If they can’t afford to pay their way through without assistance, then college isn’t for them”? The bootstrappy-type that likes to boast about how they got through college on wages from their summer job?

“Former President Donald Trump said he no longer has four cell phones identified by the New York attorney general’s investigation into the Trump Organization’s finances but has turned over his personal phone to be searched as he tries to convince a state judge to lift a civil contempt ruling that so far has cost him $140,000,” CNN reports.

“In an affidavit filed with the court Friday, Trump said he doesn’t currently have any phones, computers or electronic devices issued to him by the Trump Organization and that he has authorized his attorneys to search his homes in Bedminster, New Jersey, his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, and his personal residence in Trump Tower for any documents sought by New York Attorney General Letitia James’ subpoena.”

I use MoneyDance, which runs on both Linux and Windows, to help me pay bills and keep my checkbook balanced. There are a whole lot of other features which I don’t use.

My favorite feature of MS Money was the graph you could get showing future account balances based on scheduled transactions, which is useful when you get paid twice a week but have bills due monthly (sometimes, the big bill gets autodeducted the day before you get paid two months in the future). MoneyDance was the only app I could find that had that feature, which comes as a plugin.

He just started ranting about how at least he made something out of his degree while I just hung out and got high on bong hits. I pretty much told him to fuck off and have not heard much from him since.

Been listening to a Youtube channel that reads posts from various subreddits dealing in everything from douchebags getting their comeuppance to elitist Karens. And asshats like that are dime a dozen.

YouTube about Reddit sounds extremely stupid, but not stupid enough for me. I’m holding out for response videos to the YouTube channel about Reddit.

You poked at a person who has the fragile self-image that comes with wanting to tell yourself you’re a good person while being a Republican this late in the party’s decline.

I mostly started listening to it by accident, between the Almighty Algorithm dumping in on my YT homepage and the need for something to take my mind off my work leading me to give it a try.

All orange. It’s the new word. The old word is just a word. I don’t think they should have changed it.
