Florida officials lied to the migrants who were flown to Martha’s Vineyard in an attempt to make a point about America’s immigration policies, and President Biden isn’t kidding around when he talks about his support for labor unions. #Colbert #Comedy #Monologue

Call something “Christian” and you can do whatever you want. I don’t know what the point of an unaccredited grade school is.

Thursday morning Kanye West sent a letter to Gap notifying them that he’d be terminating his Yeezy Gap clothing line. The collab between the rapper and retailer kicked off in 2020 and pulled in an impressive $1 billion in sales in its first year. But, citing a breach of contract, Ye pulled out of what should have been a ten year deal. Gap CEO Mark Breitbard emailed staff confirming the separation, saying that the company’s and Ye’s “vision is not aligned.” West reportedly plans to open his own clothing stores.

As is often the case with West, another big news item concerning him dropped the same day: Rolling Stone published a piece on questionable practices at Donda Academy, the private Christian prep school West opened last year. Yes, the artist behind The College Dropout and Late Registration operates a school. (Though to be fair, he also has albums titled Second Semester and Graduation.) The unaccredited K-12 school located in Simi Valley requires families of students to sign NDAs. A source at the school told Rolling Stone that they aren’t so much NDAs as they are an “informal agreement.”

I doubt it: AFAIK, all Florida Republicans have to do is drop a few mentions of “communism” in their campaign ads (relevant or not), and that bloc falls right in line….

Nonviable fetus found abandoned on south side Milwaukee street

Milwaukee police are investigating after a dead and nonviable fetus was left on the street of a south side neighborhood Sunday.

Police were called to the 3400 block of South 84th Street, near the Highwood Estates and Euclid Park neighborhoods, sometime after 11:45 a.m. after the fetus was discovered, according to a news release. Police are searching for the mother.

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office said the incident is not being investigated as a homicide. The fetus was 18 weeks old and nonviable, meaning it had no chance of survival, the office said.

Expect more of this.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) once bragged to authors Peter Baker and Susan Glasser — who have just published The Divider — about his access to Donald Trump and told them about Trump’s boasts about his closeness with evangelicals, The Independent reports.

He said Trump had told him: “Those fucking Christians love me.”

Graham added: “He’s a lying motherfucker… He could kill fifty people on our side and it wouldn’t matter.”

Leftist hypocrisy: Dems activate National Guard to interdict 50 illegal immigrants who disturbed liberals’ golf games & Chardonnay at Martha’s Vineyard.

They do NOTHING to address 4.2 MILLION illegal immigrants who have flooded small towns in Texas.

Biden doesn’t care.

According to Google, about 4.2 million Texas residents were foreign born. So was Cruz deliberately lambasting anyone residing in Texas who was not born here? Was he claiming that foreign birth is somehow a disqualification from being accepted as part of this nation, which would include Canadian-born Cruz himself?

Both the Torah and the New Testament are unambiguous:

Leviticus 19 34:

The stranger who resides with you shall be to you as one of your citizens; you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I the LORD am your God.

Matthew 25 35 40:

35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

Neither DeSantis nor Abbott can claim to be anything other than a devotee of Republican Jesus — a total repudiation of whatever their religion should have taught them.

Hi. I can’t stay, but a brief update.

We’re stranded in Newfoundland. Our ferry to Argentia was cancelled as the vessel broke down, so we scrambled and were booked on the Port aux Basques ferry. We broke down in the harbour in Port aux Basques and were towed in. (Huge plumes of black smoke issuing from the engine room is usually not a good sign.)

I wound up cancelling our reservations on the east side of Newfoundand and in St. Pierre via E-mail. My wife had alternative plans made up for a western Newfoundland trip so we’ve activated those.

On top of that, the ferry to Labrador keeps getting cancelled for high winds. The remnants of a Pacific typhoon are about to bear down on us here. That storm has already laid down snow in western Labrador.

We might have to throw ourselves on the Canadian government for mercy if the last ferry off the island gets cancelled.

On top of that, my ATM card quit working in Nova Scotia. I called the bank in Scottsbluff yesterday to find out what’s up (ouch hotel telephone charge), and they said they sent everyone new ATM cards (right after we left Nebraska, great, that means mine is at the Post Office at home). We’ll have to go to a bank to exchange some cash tomorrow but we should be okay.

We are currently in Stephenville, Newfoundland. We took a walking trip today to see an ancient fossil bed just outside town (regrettably I did not bring my camera.)

A couple photographs:

MV Confederation—ferry from PEI to NS

The ferry from Woods Island, Prince Edward Island to Caribou, Nova Scotia

North Sydney, Nova Scotia

North Sydney from the ferry in the harbour.

The two ferries to Newfoundland. On the right is the ferry to Argentia and the left to Port aux Basques.

(i’ve stolen some of this from randos. some is mine)

so david brooks makes another asinine observation:

You would think that those of us in the anti-Trump camp would have at one point stepped back and asked some elemental questions: What are we trying to achieve? Who is the core audience here? Which strategies have worked, and which have not?

well david start here:

yours is a party of greed, avarice, selfishness, corruption, and thirst for Power for its own sake.

you have accepted the support of bigots, racists, and religious fanatics. They traffic in the separation of people from each other, but the joining of certain Churches and State, and you’re ok with it.

you’re where you are now because of spy45 and others who pander to the resentments of the mostly uneducated masses. You offer simplistic, antagonistic analysis and answers to society’s problems — solutions that always seem to involve finger-pointing and aggression, but never any self-reflection. And, of course, have no chance of actually being implemented, unless it’s to punish, degrade or control women, POC or generically, ‘the libs’.

are you surprised there arent enough of you to ‘come together’ and defeat Trump OR Trumpism itself?

the problem with ‘sensible’ R’s is exemplified by Sununu. Abhors Boldoc AND still will vote for him. You put “getting our guy elected” above governing. Spy45 humiliates Cruz, Graham, and even Romney and those spineless jellyfish lick his boots.

And it’s no longer just Spy45 anymore. Now you’ve cultivated election deniers, general crazies, “no exceptions for rape or incest”. People like Gohmert, Massie, Dixon, Mastriano, Masters, Lake, Boebert, Greene ad infinito. No one hates Walker, but as a Senator; really? Oz may be a medical quack, though he doesn’t appear to be a general loon, yet. But, again, Senator Oz? Really? The best you got? But you’d vote for him, right? He’d definitely make a better senator than Fetterman? Or is it just cause he’s an R?

Spy45 can quit politics tomorrow. Your Party problem has transcended him.

Look at Abbott and Desantis.

Yes, he is. Conservatives are racists. They do not care if you were born here, immigrated here, committed the non-criminal offence of crossing the border without passing a customs house, or illegally took a job.

To be fair:
- His mother just died.
- He knew this was to be his lot for his entire life.
- The British monarchy has _almost_ no power. The Queen was handed speeches to read by the Prime Minister of the day and she read them. She made subtle hints to show her pleasure of displeasure. (Wearing the EU colors at the time of Brexit). She could talk to and advise Prime Ministers in private, but publicly do nothing.
— The only case she ever might have real power is if there were a hung parliament, and she needed to appoint someone, or there’s a leadership crisis . I believe she did this once in the 1960’s.
- She theoretically can refuse Royal Assent to a bill (same as a veto here), but that hasn’t been done by a British monarch in nearly 200 years.
- She does have some _very_ limited power to scuttle bills related to her own estates.
- All those in theory massive, but in practice, basically non exercisable powers have now passed on to him.

- The only thing the monarch (or working royals) can do themselves are is non controversial pet projects. In Charles’s case, it’s organic farming and his charities. Harry, who of course was never going to be on the throne but was still a working royal for a long time, created the Invictus games to honor sportsmanship in Wounded veterans.

I am not ride or die by the royal family—I think they shouldn’t get to be the largest land holder in a state that kicked them out of total power—but Charles is basically the 20th century version of the 21st century phenomenon of social media kids whose lives are eaten by living in a panopticon plus constant impression maintenance.

He’s fucked, and an awful awkward toff, but he was fitted for that fate by being the first test subject of princedom within an era of radio and television.

It’s a dialectical tension—he sucks and also can be understood sympathetically.

That tweet presumes that Rings of Power is not considered a “hit” in Amazon’s eyes.

And the first season cost around $55M per episode, and while a 5-season arc will cost over a billion dollars, the rights purchase is forever. No one else can make a Hobbit or LOTR TV show/streaming series without Amazon’s permission.

Blade Runner is not an illogical choice for Amazon as I am sure it will gain a lot of attention.

Contemporary TV is in an odd state, with streaming now being so popular. But Amazon has made a corporate decision to position Prime Video as a significant competitor to Netflix and Disney+.

Personally I think there is just too much TV (and cinema) for the well being of our society. But when I grew up I was always told TV was a “boob tube” so I’m probably scarred from childhood.

re: #107 The Ghost of a Flea

I think I’ve argued on here before that reactionaries have already done for the 2nd amendment, they’ve just done it by changed the underlying definitions of critical concepts relating to threat and self defense, then creating a squid-ink cloud of cultural reasoning that some Americans aren’t real Americans that get gun rights.

You technically have a right to bear arms…

…but you do not have a right to not be viewed as a threat and summarily killed, whether by a citizen or cop, in keeping with cultural norms of “who is inherently threatening”…

…and you do not have a right to be treated equally under law for a similar level of transgression with firearm…

…and your right to self defense is conditional on you being the right kind of person…

…and your right to resist unjust agents of the states simply disappears if you’re darker than a paper bag…

…and sometimes people who should be against all gun control will just do gun control but only versus specific groups, and the only fight back is to “prove” their enforcement is unequal.

All of the above developed as tactics in the Reconstruction South, and were refined into instruments of terror in the Redemption South. Since then the instruments have just become more refined—what was justified by fear of the Black Panthers (which pretty much established the basis of extrajudicial killing we are now aware of at all times), what was justified by the drug war, what was justified by 9.11.01, and finally what has justified by the modern moral panic of young black men that threaten just by existing in space and thus can be shot.

Would they have approved any of her judicial nominations since the Senate was in GOP hands? Unless the Democrats also took control of the Senate in that scenario. Hard to know what would have happened. McConnell would not allow any Scotus nomination through. So there would be a 7 person Supreme Court. Given he blocked Obama nominations to other courts, would he have continued doing so? I’m not sure what would have ultimately happened but it could have been very bad. Also from the Fifth Circuit:

A dissent written by U.S. Court of Appeals Judge James Graves Jr. could play a key role in determining whether the U.S. Supreme Court will hear an appeal of a case that has, so far, upheld Mississippi’s Jim Crow-era constitutional provision written to keep Black people from voting.

Last month, the 5th U.S. Court of Appeals upheld a Mississippi constitutional provision that bans people convicted of certain felonies from voting. White leaders in Mississippi included most of those specific felonies in the state’s 1890 Constitution because they thought those crimes were more likely to be committed by African Americans.

Though attorneys challenging the provision in court say it has continued to disenfranchise Black Mississippians, a majority of the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals did not agree. Following the appeals court’s ruling, plaintiff attorneys said they plan to appeal the lower court’s ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court. They have 90 days from the final verdict that was issued on Aug. 24 the file the appeal.

Graves, a Black man from Mississippi who was appointed to the federal appeals court in 2010, wrote a 47-page dissent that outlines the state’s long and disturbing history of racism and its impact on America.

Rob McDuff, an attorney with the Mississippi Center for Justice who is working on the case, said Graves’ dissent could increase the odds the Supreme Court will take up the case.

Still - Biden has been appointing a lot of judges, too. I haven’t paid enough attention to know if there’s a strategy, but last I heard he was appointing far more judges than Trump had at this point.

it’s not just how many judges, it’s who he’s picking

brookings.edu

Commentators (e.g., here) stressed, as did Biden, the comparatively large proportion of former public defenders among his appointees. Over a third of Biden’s 42 2021 appointees had some public defender experience, and almost as many had at least three years’ experience. As a proportion of all appointees, they more than doubled public defenders among Obama’s appointees, and were much more than other predecessors.

Biden’s 23 appointees in his second year include six with some public defender experience, five with three or more years.

I live in San Diego County, which has the busiest international border in the US.

And guess what, this county is still one of the most desirable places to live, which is exactly why property costs so damn much here.

I don’t mind people speaking Spanish around me. Frankly, it really isn’t that much of a problem. I have never been anywhere in the county in which the fact that we are part of old Mexico, and in which so many people have come from Mexico, has caused me a problem.

I’m sure the affected corporations will be thrilled at having to let anyone and everyone say whatever the hell they want on their platforms.

Not like that will dent the userbases (and ad dollars) or anything…

That’s definitely a problem for sites like Facebook and Twitter. For newspapers and magazines, the solution is “no comments then.” If this went so far as to extend to print outlets, then good-bye to letters to the editor.

I can feel it here too. DW is talking to her mother in central Japan and the typhoon will only cause strong winds there. The atmospheric pressure here is due to the fact that one of DW’s siblings is a conspiracy theorist who refuses to get vaccinated and she is screaming at her to not allow one of her brothers to visit until he gets vaxed. She also has cousins who do acupuncture and have taken no measures to make their workplace safe; they too don’t vax.

Anyway, sorry to hijack this report (though it’s funny to hear DW in full local dialect mode).

Temporarily — because what then would happen in 2020? Would Trump be able to get elected at that point? Counterfactual history is very uncertain. Ben Elton’s Time and Time Again posits the situation of a person being sent back in time to prevent WW1 on the theory that subsequent ills were all due to that calamity; what happens is basically every attempt to correct the situation has unforeseen and often very dire consequences.

If you think things would be worse now if Clinton had been elected President in 2016, I’ve got nothing.

If Hillary won, would that have meant that the House and Senate also would have likely gone blue? If so, then there would have been a positive outlook for this nation. But I don’t know how likely that would have been. McConnell didn’t need Trump to sabotage much of Obama’s agenda. Fascism and racism permeated the party before Trump.

Also installed all the mod_rewrite commands to route all the different types of LGF web pages according to simplified readable URLs. It’s all working but there are still weird little problems showing up due to PHP 8.

The Weather Network here in Canada noted today that they follow western Pacific typhoons, because eventually they become major weather systems in Canada. Powerful typhoons, even after they’ve lost their wind punch, still carry incredible amounts of water. As such, right now there is a former typhoon stretching from northern Ontario and Michigan’s UP across Ontario and Québec, and another that is exiting now from Newfoundland (the sun was out here today).

Been a while since I’ve rummaged around through this code. To launch the new server, I’m just focusing on getting things working, but I already see some things that could be greatly improved going forward. It’s not too horrible because I always try to write code to be easily understood, but some of the basic architecture of the Javascript stuff needs refactoring.

I cannot stand the taste of mayonnaise, and it violently activates my gag reflex and ruins the taste of anything I put in my mouth for hours afterward. The Spousal Unit loves mayo on lots of things and even dips her fries in it.

In those circumstances, I have to invoke the mantra I use against hyperpartisan food snobs against myself: “These are not YOUR taste buds. Processing taste differently is not a goddamned moral failing.”

I still have to avert my eyes, though.
