They need to stop this entirely.

2 HappyWarrior  May 22, 2014 3:19:39pm

How about they just leave people alone? You can make a statement about second amendment ownership without brandishing your gun around like a prick.

That may well be so. But when did you last see the NRA back up a millimeter, let alone dropping one whole aspect of the protest? This is a rare thing, and that made it noteworthy. Hence my necessary mea culpa.

Well that would be me. How much attention do I really get even with the generously given ability to Page here at LGF? Not that much.

How does a guy like me get that much attention without a publicity stunt? I hate those things BTW, just making a point about the public attention span.

It is sad that even something as basic as realizing that the tactics chosen are self-defeating is newsworthy in gun nut land.

Don’t sell yourself too short. The example of you and other sensible-sounding gun owners right here on LGF is the main reason I distinguish between “gun owner” and “gun nut”.

Thanks for that. Not exactly a topic I”m likely to be called a upding hound now is it? ;-) I took a risk of annoying some good people here to show whats up out there. Thanks to many for understanding my aim here. Er, um intent.

I honestly don’t know. However, the more gun owners like you that don’t feel the need to brandish their guns to make their point I do feel would see more publicity especially one were to use social media. . And yeah I know you’re making a point about public attention span which is a shame but really I think the whole brandishing of guns does more to turn people off than it does on.

Ditto that. There’s a difference between gun owners and gun nuts and while I may not like guns personally, I do think RWC’s’ and others efforts do distinguish between the two.

When I was after a CCW for work, I went to the Police Commission public meeting. Got my 5 minutes to speak. I’ll tell you what I brandished and it got everyones attention. I mean everyone was just raptly watching.

I put two kilos of 24 karat gold on the table in front of me. Pointed to them and declared I had “good cause” and handed out a 3 page letter on my good character and some legalese that was included. I was still denied but hey I gave it my best try with the best I could bring. I’m pretty sure I made a memorable impression.

Rightwingconspirator,

You had asked in the main thread going to carry some of the discussion here. So, here is a response I made in that thread before reading that you wanted to continue here.

I had asked if they had open carry in Dodge City Kansas back at the turn of the century.

You answered:

Maybe not, why? My context is where the law allows and the local culture (if thats the word) is accepting.

So my comment in the thread was:

Just wondering that’s all. I’m trying to get some context as to why during the last 20 or more years open carry is so all important? I’d like a little history as to how we managed as a country to grow like we did, get as far as we did and did it without open carry laws and some of the other gun control issues we have today.

I have an older brother, now 74 and he is a gun rights activist. But only recently. He has always liked guns, but never a peep out of him until the last twenty or so years. Boy, do I have a gun story about him. I remember it like it happened yesterday, and I doubt he even understands how his own overblown reaction to a simple crime was both dangerous and stupid, it helped set me in the opposite direction.

Again…he never worried about open carry. Now he is all for it? It almost seems like it is a combination of fashion, safety in numbers thinking and pure hatred politics.

IMO you should have gotten the CCW permit. Denial of permits even when cause and character is shown just gives the NRA fodder for its “shall issue” propaganda.

It’s weird to me. Especially where CCW is available. What’s the point? The law already allows open carry so what they hope to accomplish must be mere attention getting. Not A Good Plan At All.

I don’t need my pistol let alone long gun at The Olive Garden. even if the place gets violently robbed the crowd makes firing back too dangerous to contemplate. I’d be the guy that got shot at and left mine at home. Or in Tucson during the gem show it would be in the glove box.

I’m lucky not to be getting harassed much for being too moderate. It may yet happen, I’m not going to change.

“Open Carry” = My Intellectual prowess is not sufficient in a globalized world . I need to make up the difference by carrying a deadly scary looking instrument of violence designed to cause an emotional reaction of fear.

It’s a reasonable statement and good to see. But I’ll wait and see if the authors get tossed out of their organizations for writing it.

Come and Take It Texas

I saw a bunch of these douchecanoes tonight as I was heading home from my networking event. They were walking around waving flags with guns strapped on.

They looked ridiculous. No one needs to openly carry an assault rifle on the street, especially here in Austin. If they think they do, I would suggest moving out to West Texas where there isn’t anyone around for miles.

Open carry of military-looking firearms only reminds me of the videos and news clips we see of Somalia and other nations who are currently in a state of anarchy.

Is that really the impression these guys want to leave?

No idea. I just do not understand the point of walking around with a long gun openly strapped to your body. It’s not going to help you at all if someone walks up and sucker punches you to steal it or if several people jump you.

The stupidest thing is that these MOLON LABE!!11ty!! idiots were walking around Sixth Street with these guns strapped on, meaning they couldn’t go into any of the buildings, since all the buildings on Sixth are either restaurants, hotels or bars that all have TABC licenses or they’re shops with signs on them prohibiting weapons. They were basically just stuck walking down the street waving flags with guns on.

24 Romantic Heretic  May 23, 2014 3:11:37pm

Myself? Living in Canada which completely lacks the gun culture of the States I find the whole argument about carrying weapons in public, concealed or openly, is a baffling one.

Isn’t the point of living in a society meaning that you are safe enough that an individual doesn’t have to be armed to be safe, to keep their property, to protect their families? If where a person lives is such that a weapon is considered a necessity of life I don’t believe that place can claim to be a society anymore.

I wouldn’t want to live in or near it either.

2 kg. That’s 64.3014931 troy oz, Or, cash value right now (long after peak gold) using a low value of 1285.80 per oz,

That was $82331.69 in gold.

And that’s not a good enough reason to have a right to defend yourself?

I realize there are a lot of folks here who are anti-gun. But do you really think that if that kind of money is on the line the robber is just going to walk away? Even Psych 101 at liberal schools know better… O_o
