First off let me say thank for running an awesome site here. Not only do you post great content but you’re top notch on the technical side as well. There’s not many people who can handle both so effectively but you are one of the rare ones.
Thank you also for LGF pages. I visit other blogs and post at other sites and I’ve yet to come across anything else quite like it. It really makes LGF a community blog. I always enjoying seeing what others are posting about.
So why am I writing you this letter?
Well, I am writing because I felt moved to respond to comments you made in one of your posts earlier this week.
In reporting on Rick Santorum’s endorsement of teaching creationism in schools, you said the following:
Argh. This is the anti-science face of the Republican Party, and Santorum is not the only presidential candidate with these Dark Ages views. In fact, the majority of the current candidates are creationists — and according to recent Gallup polls, the majority of Republican voters. They keep trying to force their ignorant beliefs into American schools despite the numerous Supreme Court rulings against them, and this election season they’re more determined than ever.
Now I won’t say the comment offended me, but I will say it bothered me a little bit for the simple fact that it seems to lump all believers into one group.
Don’t get me wrong, I feel as strongly as you do about keeping creationism out of public schools. It absolutely does not belong there.
I am a Christian. I suppose you could call me a creationist, but I’m not a young earth creationist and I certainly don’t feel I have “ignorant beliefs”.
Actually I’m a strong supporter of science and innovation and enjoy all the discoveries we continue to make as we gain a better understanding of our planet and the universe around us.
From reading your other posts here on LGF, I can tell you have about zero patience for fundamentalist Christians and I sense that with these particular comments you were more targeting them than anyone else, but they do seem a bit of a blanket statement on a rather large group of people.
I know I’m not the only Christian on LGF.
Please understand Charles, I am not upset with you, I have no desire to harm my standing on this site nor make enemies with anyone.
I’m probably one of the more practical Christians you’ll ever meet. I refuse to hate gays as I believe Jesus never taught us to hate anyone. I refuse to see women or minorities as second class citizens for the same reasons as above. I also refuse to support any initiative to remove science from the classroom or force religion into public schools or our Constitution.
I understand not everyone believes in God, or in any Gods for that matter. I do not judge them negatively for this. I also ask not to be judged negatively simply because I believe in God (not that I’m saying you did, you most certainly did not).
I don’t have any particular requests nor am I asking you to apologize, I just wanted to offer you my feelings on this issue.
Quite frankly, I think LGF is one of the few places on the web I could write something like this and feel very comfortable doing it. I love that about this place.
Thanks for reading and thanks again for running such a great site. I’m truly happy to be here.
