Thailand Coup Installs Muslim Prime Minister

Tue, Sep 19, 2006 at 5:34:26 pm PDT

In the Thailand military coup, the acting prime minister installed by the army is a Muslim who wants to negotiate with the jihadis in the south.

Sondhi, who is known to be close to Thailand’s revered constitutional monarch, will serve as acting prime minister, army spokesman Col. Akarat Chitroj said. Sondhi, well-regarded within the military, is a Muslim in this Buddhist-dominated nation.

Sondhi, 59, was selected last year to head the army partly because it was felt he could better deal with the Muslim insurgency in southern Thailand, where 1,700 people have been killed since 2004. Recently, Sondhi urged negotiations with the separatists in contrast to Thaksin’s hard-fisted approach. Many analysts have said that with Thaksin in power, peace in the south was unlikely.

Why can't we have clear speaking people like that?

He may want to negotiate with the jihadis, but he has also been the guy fighting them. It will be interesting. He may be Muslim, but he is also very close to the King of Thailand, which is a huge political asset. I'm not terribly worried - trying to detach the jihadis from the local population might be a strategy worth trying.

The general may be expected to deal with the insurgency by cutting a deal: the provinces will be permitted to secede, so long as they do not formally declare independence.

Civil authority in the southern Thai provinces will evaporate. Schools will close, and be replaced by madrassahs. Those not adherents of the ROP will be cleansed from the land. And their relatives in the North will shut up and put up with it or face tanks.

A perfect and just settlement, and a good example of the universal brotherhood to which all are invited.

I have heard numerous stories about the Thai Army from relatives who were in the Vietnam War. My father was stationed at a Thai base for almost a year and got to know several of them very well. He regarded them as some of the best soldiers in the country, after the Koreans. The Viet-Cong and NVA hated and feared them and, frequently, chose to retreat rather than fight them.

If the current Thai Army if half as good as the one of yesteryear, then mopping up the terrorists should be easy.

Unless there is obstruction from the new PM, of course...

Doesn't sound good based on that article, but I'm no Thai expert.

A poorly written story?:

But he alienated the urban middle class, intellectuals and pro-democracy activists.

then:

Some of Thaksin's critics wanted to jettison his policies promoting privatization, free trade agreements and CEO-style administration.

Why would pro-democracy activists be against privatization?

Intellectuals and urban-middle class makes me think of our own libs for some reason, haha.

I also like how the author points out it's the first coup in 15 years. WOW, 15 whole years, what a democracy!

If you want to successfully negotiate with the Jihadis, a colt .45 is the best way to go.

The olive branch won't help.

If Thailand had a disagreement with Australia, US, UK or another civilized nation, Thailand could talk with us or the other civilzed nation about it via diplomatic means. However there are millions of people who aren't interested in freedom and democracy and just want to kill you. They only understand the Colt .45.

Uh,
Changing governments by coups is very very bad. It completely undermines the transfer of power by legitimate means, completely shreds the Rule of Law. It's very hard for a country to claw its way back to democracy - the precedent is set to go around the system instead of working within it.
It's very bad for a military to upsurp the civilian government, it will always harbor in the future the urge to go for the option whenever it becomes impatient even if democractic functions are reestablished. Don't know Thai politics, but does anybody know what the possibility is of a split in the military? That would mean civil war, loyalists troops - that is to the elected government, for good or bad (meaning fighting for respecting the system) against rebel troops who have abandoned and betrayed the system?
This is bad enough without the added X-factor of the uncertain (to the outside world)leanings of the general desiring to be the strong-man in charge.

Time to negotiate their "greivances".

Tribute, yeah that's it, pay them tribute, how about 100 White Virgins a year, it worked before.

Soon the Moors had assembled a massive army and within a few months had conquered most of Gothic Spain. Only isolated pockets of Gothic resistance held out. In the north an enclave only secured its existence by being forced to enter a treaty with the Moors in terms of which the Goths had to hand over 100 White Gothic virgins a year to the Moorish leaders for use in their harems - a painful tribute which continued until 791 AD, when the Goths once enough became strong enough to break the terms of the treaty.

What will the Buddhist monks do? Will they council the people to fight? How many muslims live in Bangkok? I didn't realize the situation was this bad bad bad.

111 carridine  Tue, Sep 19, 2006 4:51:47pm

Mama Winger: 6, counting my wife's mother and father in rural, upcountry Thailand...

All: I raise my children to respect God, and the Messengers from God; to the best of our ability.

I do not take lightly the loving burdens of parenthood, but I have already been in situations (as a father, husband and physician) where I've experienced, FIRSTHAND, the limits of conscious knowledge, and have turned consciously to That-Which-Created-Me.

This seems a rational thing to do, even when (especially when?) thugs threaten me and my dear children...

But ultimately, we're all in God's hands. I do what I can, all the while knowing that I've been consciously observing this growing storm for the past 41 years, since that moment in Monterey, CA, when I accepted the Glory of God as the One, promised by Christ Jesus.

In 41 years of conscious, focused study and dialogue and experience, I have found nothing to show me that Jesus was mistaken, lying or misinformed.

Lil Olde Lady, MsDixie: THANK YOU, Friends... my eyes tear in appreciation of your good intentions! Thannk you...

We DO want to stay safe, if only to continue the battle against the Islamo-fascists and other thugs... I did NOT mean to imply that I'm lackadaisical about my family's safety, only that some things happen, and we have to let go and let God.

I cannot WILL my sons to safety and well-being, just as I could not WILL my beloved mother-in-laws' healing when the artery exploded in her head! Sometimes events move beyond our poor power to enhance or diminish...

I hope you and your family stay safe.

As an aside, since I'm a bit of a hermit and never travel, I don't know anybody else who lives in Thailand. But I've long been reading your comments here and on other blogs.

This is a good occasion to point out what a wonderful thing the internet is. Ten years ago I wouldn't have known you existed, and would have watched news reports about the coup with a certain detatchment.

Now, here on this blog, you, me, Miguel, Amalie, and everybody else can exchange thoughts and ideas. We come from different countries, backgrounds, religions, and cultures. We can't tell who's rich or poor, attractive or ugly. Someone posting here could be a quadriplegic in a wheelchair and we'd never know it by their posts. Bloggers and commenters are linked by ideas more than anything else.

The internet is revolutionizing human communication like nothing since the invention of the printing press 500 years ago. It can be a great force for peace, and it looks like it will only become more powerful in the future.

The internet is revolutionizing human communication like nothing since the invention of the printing press 500 years ago. It can be a great force for peace, and it looks like it will only become more powerful in the future.

ABSOFREAKINLUTELY! IMHO the equal of the printing press. Instant access to whole libraries of information. Blogs that cover a multitude of subjects.

Gee; hate to interrupt a good drinking thread, but here's the skinny. King Bhumibol, and 79% of the population, are buddhist. The muslims are a majority on the southern Indonision Peninsula. In the eyes of the buddhist population, the King is only half a stroke below deity. It's hard to see how this deal could have happened without his tacit approval. BUT THIS DEAL AIN'T OVER, YET. The buddhist monks have a lot of political stroke and it would be hard to imagine that they would sit by while the [bigoted word]s take over. Chapters II and III are still being written. I spent a year and a half in Thailand in 73-74, about 80 miles south of Bangkok. There was a coup and when the King said "timeout" everybody went home.

Sounds like there's a Muslim army faction trying to seize power. But that's only one small part of the story. As is so often the case, petty rivalries between the other groups act as a force multiplier for the Saracen hordes.

Psalm 139

For the director of music.
Of David.
A psalm.

1 O LORD, you have searched me
and you know me.

2 You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.

3 You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.

4 Before a word is on my tongue
you know it completely, O LORD.

5 You hem me in—behind and before;
you have laid your hand upon me.

6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.

7 Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?

8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, [a] you are there.

9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,

10 even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.

11 If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,"

12 even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.

13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother's womb.

14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.

15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,

16 your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me
were written in your book
before one of them came to be.

17 How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!
How vast is the sum of them!

18 Were I to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand.
When I awake,
I am still with you.

19 If only you would slay the wicked, O God!
Away from me, you bloodthirsty men!

20 They speak of you with evil intent;
your adversaries misuse your name.

21 Do I not hate those who hate you, O LORD,
and abhor those who rise up against you?

22 I have nothing but hatred for them;
I count them my enemies.

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.

24 See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.

I think Sondhi's loyalty to the king is second only to his primary loyalty. One mistake is all it takes for a monarch, however loved. The king is old, probably not keeping up with global and regional trends. I wonder how much this Sondhi is pulling the king's strings?

Thai Counter-Insurgency Officials Coup Plotters?

Thai Counter-Insurgency Officials Charged With Coup

by Richard S. Ehrlich

BANGKOK, Thailand -- After surviving an alleged car bomb assassination plot, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra now faces about 10 military counter-insurgency officials charged with attempting to murder him, including a sergeant who confessed to planning the coup.

Opponents of the pro-American prime minister -- including Bangkok's wealthy elite and pampered middle-class, Thai media, white-collar business executives, students and others -- suspect the car bomb and coup plot is an dangerous charade by Mr. Thaksin to win an election scheduled for Oct. 15, while simultaneously bludgeoning his perceived enemies within the military.

From your article:

Thaksin himself projected an air of uncertainty when he responded to the growing tide of bad news by taking refuge in planetary signs, rather than respond with his characteristic quick, caustic comments to the press.

''Right now Mercury ... is in a corner, perfectly aligned with my (birth) star. Mercury is no good, so if it's not good, I am going to request not to speak. I'll just wait until next year to talk,'' Thaksin told reporters, soon after returning home from a summit meeting of leaders in the Asia-Pacific region.

At the first sign of heads rolling in Cambodia. Vietnam will seek to protect itself. Cambodia is a buffer zone. Communism and Islamic law cannot coexist. As German socialism and communism could not.

287 AliAbDab  Tue, Sep 19, 2006 6:16:48pm

At first I thought, Oh shit, now the media will pretend that Thailands jihadis are "resistence" to a military junta! But then I read here that a Muslim heads the junta. So then I think:

1. The best answer to the assertion by Islamapologists that Islamist violence is all a reaction to Palestine, Iraq, etc, is to point out that Thailand has no part in these things yet in its south suffers the worst pro-capita level of Muslim attacks of any place.

2. If the new junta had been liable to depiction as "hard-line" or anti Islamist, that would have given the media the opportunity to depict the Thai Jihad as yet another victimology.

3. If the new leader is a Muslim who will try to appease those Islamists in the South and inevitably fails to stop their violence by talking to them, that will expose their true nature. If he is even a "hard-line" Islamist himself, so much the better for us, we can point to yet another Muslim dictatorship.

All in all, cannot be a bad thing. It might even lead to the media actually mentioning the Thai jihad once in a while.

"Islamapologist" I just came up with that :). Feel free to adopt the phrase. Or quote earlier occurrence of the term.

288 Globular Cluster  Tue, Sep 19, 2006 6:21:09pm
Communism and Islamic law cannot coexist. As German socialism and communism could not.

Communism and Buddhism can't coexist either, just ask the Dalai Lama. Yet up till now, Vietnam has not been at war with Thailand. On the contrary, the Left, meaning in this case, the communists, find Islamism a useful tool to bring about the destruction of the capitalist west. This is the same reason that ANSWER and their ilk support the global jihad.

Their nature has been exposed countless times by their terror attacks, and yet the media has largely ignored it and they remain "unexposed". Therefore, it is unlikely that exposure will be a positive outcome of this coup.

But the media cant easily pretend the existing jihad is in reaction to the junta if the junta is headed by a muslim. At the same time, the simple fact of a coup brings media attention and maybe some exposure of whats going on already in the south.

I cant see a muslim PM equals islamic government in this case. But if it did, imagine the trouble our media would have "explaining" the bloodbath that would result from imposing Sharia on the country named after a womans legs of which the capital is the name of the basic sexual act!

From where I am ( about 100 miles south of Bradfordistan, future capital of the Islamic state of North West England ) the way this "plays" in the British analysis of "our" Muslims is far more important that what it would be like if I lived there...because I dont!

[bigoted word] gen, [bigoted word] PM, doesn't matter, the numbers don't addd up. 3% can't hold off the other 97%, and thats assuming the entire army is [bigoted word]. Look for negotiations w/ the jahadis in the south for a region of sharia law, thin edge of the wedge, gradualism.

Thailand will be nibbled to death by ducks.

If this has been posted, sorry! Thai troubles: timeline

Recent political developments in Thailand leading up to today's declaration of a state of emergency by Thaksin Shinawatra, the Thai Prime Minister.

February 6, 2005: Thaksin Shinawatra’s Thai Rak Thai (Thais Love Thais) Party wins a second landslide election victory, taking 377 of the 500 seats in parliament.

September 9: State-run television takes a current affairs show hosted by Sondhi Limthongkul, Mr Thaksin’s former business associate, off the air, citing repetition of "unfair" criticism of various parties.

January 23, 2006: Mr Thaksin’s relatives sell their controlling stake in Shin Corp, the telecoms empire he founded, to Temasek, the Singapore state investment firm. The tax-free $1.9 billion sale angers Bangkok’s middle classes and adds momentum to Mr Sondhi’s campaign.

February 24: Mr Thaksin calls a snap election on April 2, three years early and two days before a big anti-government rally.

February 27: Three main opposition parties announce an election boycott after Mr Thaksin rejects their demand for a neutral body to reform the constitution.

April 2: Election is held despite opposition boycott.

April 4: After a strong protest vote, Mr Thaksin meets revered King Bhumibhol Adulyadej, before announcing on national television that he will step down as soon as the next parliament meets.

April 5: Mr Thaksin hands day-to-day power to his Deputy Prime Minister, Chidchai Vanasatidya.

April 26: The three main opposition parties say that they will stand in a new election if April 2 poll is annulled.

May 8: Constitutional Court rules that the election is unconstitutional and a new poll should be held.

May 23: Mr Thaksin takes back reins of power, saying it was time to get back work on economic and security issues.

May 30: Government sets election re-run for October 15. King of Thailand approves the re-run in late July saying he wants a swift end to the crisis.

July 20: Thai army chief unexpectedly re-assigns more than 100 middle-ranking officers thought to be supporters of Mr Thaksin, adding to rumours about divided army and possible coup.

September 19: Mr Thaksin declares a state of emergency after tanks surround Government House.

314 Beagle  Tue, Sep 19, 2006 7:11:57pm

Thaksin is so "hard-fisted" he's the paper cranes guy. The jihadis kill 1,700 innocent people in the most brutal ways possible, including beheadings, in open revolt against a legitimate government, and Thaksin is vilified as "hard-fisted."

The media (esp AFP/AP/Reuters) is objectively pro-jihad. I'm seriously worried about civilization. Any Muslim rebellion in any part of the world is guaranteed positive media coverage, and that's before they buy more influence.

I am a Hindu, and perhaps you are also a hindu..
as hinduism is not a religion... we call it dharma... and whose basics are certain rules... i.e. god is abstract... so it give you complete freedom to feel him, in any way you like... till you are living in boundation of humanity---

anyways hindus do accept Jesus too as a incarnation of god, and we also have one god called "Parambhram", its only this abstract concept with polymorphism, which let you see so many forms of god by us...

instead i also want to say that "st thomas" himself has introduced christanity to indians... so you can see the deep roots..

its time to join hands for sake of humanity... not to distinguish each other on name of religion...

[China news version 1]

BANGKOK, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Thai Royal Army Commander-in-Chief Gen. Sonthi Boonyarataglin staged a coup d'etat Tuesday evening and ousted the government of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
A so-called "Democratic Reform Council" declared itself in control and declared martial law nationwide. Terse announcements said it included the commanders of all three armed forces and the police. It said the coup was necessary to correct "unprecedented division in the country."
The Council said there seemed to be widespread corruption, and independent agencies were subverted by politicians, apparently a reference to the Thaksin government. "The national government through the current administration has caused conflicts and undermined the harmony of the people as never before in history."
Public acceptance remained unknown. The coup occurred late Tuesday night, when Bangkok was under a major rainstorm, and few people were seen on the streets.
The opposition had scheduled a major anti-Thaksin rally for Wednesday. The last military coup, in 1991, was extremely unpopular and was overthrown by violent opposition in the streets.
Officers this time promised to hold power for as short a time as possible. An announcement over the name of Gen. Sonthi, a Special Forces veteran long seen as apolitical, promised: "The council is steadfast in its objective, which is not to take over the government permanently and it will hand back the power to the people as soon as possible."
The Council repealed the 1997 "people's constitution" and dissolved both houses of parliament, the government and the constitution court. Announcements said the Council was under the King, and confirmed that the Privy Council and all courts except the Constitution Court remained in power.
Retired Gen. Surayudh Chulanont, a respected former military commander now a member of the royal Privy Council, was said to be the new prime minister to replace Thaksin. There was no early word how log the generals intended to remain in power, or what their reforms would be

Coup d'etat launched in Thailand, part 1

386 Ledger1  Wed, Sep 20, 2006 12:16:16am

[China news 2]

Thaksin was in New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly, and had earlier tried to dismiss Gen. Sonthi and order troops back to their barracks. His order, via a voice broadcast on TV and radio, was cut off halfway as the dramatic coup unfolded.
Tanks and troops of the Fourth Cavalry Battalion moved into strategic points in Bangkok, including the Royal Plaza.
Like most of the previous 19 military coups since 1932, there was no violence. Tanks surrounded Government House and apparently some newspaper offices. All broadcasting on local TV was interrupted, and replaced by a notice which stated the military takeover and apologized "for any inconvenience."
In the early hours of the coup, most other communications continued uninterrupted. But after several hours, all cable-TV broadcasts were cut, apparently because Thaksin and other Thai ministers were giving interviews to CNN and the BBC, which are widely seen in Bangkok.
Thailand airports remained open, including the main international airport at Bangkok.
Thai news websites were operating under very heavy loads as people tried to find out what was happening. As always, local broadcast media contained no breaking updates.
Thaksin said he would return to Thailand from New York. The shadowy coup administrators said he would not be allowed to resume his post as prime minister.
The whereabouts of most of the members the government were unknown. Thaksin, Deputy Prime Minister Surakiart Sathirathai and Foreign Minister Kantathi Suphamongkol were in New York. Deputy Prime Minister Chidchai Wannasathit, the caretaker premier, was reportedly detained by the military.
The national government through the current administration has caused conflicts and undermined the harmony of the people as never before in history.
Each side is determined to win by any means and the discord has shown a tendency to escalate.
Many people have been suspicious about the actions of the national administration under a constitutional monarchy.
The country has been governed in a way as to suggest widespread corruption. The independent agencies have been dominated by politics. The constitutional intention has been left unserved.
Since the coup, the Democratic Reform Council issued several announcements:
"In reference to the council's announcement of its power seizure earlier, for the sake of peace and order to prevail in the country, the council has imposed nationwide martial law

[Chinese warned to be careful]

BEIJING, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- China's Foreign Ministry on Wednesday warned its nationals in Thailand to be careful and avoid going outside in the wake of an overnight military coup in the country.
The Thai army launched a coup Tuesday night to oust Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who is attending the UN General Assembly in New York.
The Foreign Ministry also suggested that Chinese nationals planning to go to Thailand in the near future watch the situation and adjust their travel plans accordingly.
It said if Chinese citizens needed help, they could contact the Chinese embassy in Bangkok, and the ministry's consulate department had opened a 24-hour hotline for Chinese citizens to inquire about family and friends in Thailand.
The sudden, well-orchestrated and bloodless coup has sparked criticism, concern, unease and uncertainty in the international community.
At the United Nations, Secretary-General Kofi Annan said on Tuesday that military coups should not be encouraged, referring to what had happened in Thailand.
Thailand is a major tourist destination for Chinese with 700,000 to 800,000 Chinese traveling there every year

Mornin' All! Seems like I missed a few things after I signed off. Someone was banned?

Well, glad to see not much more on the Thai takeover yet. I don't know if I can say no news is good news in this case, but it is better than hearing all bad.

Carridine, hope you and your family are well
this morning. My thoughts have been with you.

I might need another stanza for "9 Front War"

I hope this guy doesn't make concessions to the south Thai/Malay Muslims

Anybody besides me completely upset with the total lack of interest on the part of our resident lefties (as represented by NPR & BBC) over this outrage against a constitutional democracy?

I am hearing that the Thai power-brokers were unhappy with the will of the country folk (read Jesusland) have sic'ed the army on the PM. Our good liberals can only yawn.

#393 SamHein: THANK YOU, Sir.

We're fine, I just put my sons to bed after a LONG, weird day that began early (Daddy! Phone!
"No work today! Stay home!") and weirdly (No School!) and followed on with real-time posts here and elsewhere, as this developed...

And trust me on this, IT AIN'T OVER by a long sight!

But I'm too pooped to pop. Bed sings a siren song in my ears!

Good night carridine, I'm glad we lizards have sources that circumnavigate the globe given that honest reporting is hard to distinguish from propaganda coming from stringers hired by the MSM. Stay safe, you and your family will be in my prayers.

The King has endorsed the interim government so its a done deal. Thaksin might do well not to go back.

He would probably be arrested if he does.

OT: sort of -- and closer to home (US, that is)

Muslim taxi drivers at the Minneapolis-St. Paul international airport have staged their own little coup --

http://www.pipelinenews.org/index.cfm?page=taxi919 06%2Ehtm

Muslim Taxi Drivers At Minneapolis International Airport Subjecting Fares To Sharia

Carrying alcohol? Islamic taxi drivers pick & choose long-distance (e.g. premium) fares and refuse to take passengers "who might be carrying alcohol."

Another angle is that such discrimination by Muslim drivers might make it possible for them to weed out the low fare inter-terminal travelers from those wishing to travel outbound at substantially higher fees, thus assigning themselves all the longer distance fares while the infidels are taking the short ones

And the airport authorities caved to the Somalis' demands.

Sounds to me like a prime opportunity for an ICE sting to round up illegal aliens -- a much wiser move.

INTERNATIONAL arrest warrants already issued. Whether they can enforce them and get him extradited will depend on where he ends up if he doesn't go back.

Thai Ex-Prime Minister interviewed yesterday:

"Dude, where's my country"
403 carridine  Wed, Sep 20, 2006 3:06:49pm

#401 - Niallster: Now THAT is the SECOND piece of hard evidence that this 'coup' has ulterior motives!

Taksin is a businessman, he and his family have built up communications, computer, LAN, cable and cell-phone interests, SOME at a loss to themselves, ALL at great gain to Thailand!

To persecute him for 'extraordinary wealth' or some other bogus charge ('faulty governance') is unjust!

Carridine, what's your communication situation?
