-RetweetBreaking: Anti-Syrian Lebanese MP Assassinated

Wed, Jun 13, 2007 at 9:03:39 am PDT

Nancy Pelosi’s pals in Syria have reached out to Beirut today: Lebanese lawmaker killed in Beirut blast.

BEIRUT, Lebanon (CNN) — A member of the Lebanese parliament was killed in an explosion Wednesday outside a Beirut military sports club in what hospital sources said was an assassination.

Lawmaker Walid Eido, known as a foe of Syrian involvement in Lebanon, his son, Khalid, and two of his bodyguards were killed, Lebanese media reports said.

At least one other person died and 10 were wounded in the explosion in the seaside neighborhood of Manara, according to Lebanese security sources.

The impact of the blast shattered the windows of nearby buildings, while bystanders sustained injuries from the shrapnel. CNN’s Brent Sadler witnessed wounded people being carried out of one building.

That's just terrible. And to think that Lebanon used to be a relatively nice place, years ago, or so I'm told.

We should have invaded Syria before or simultaneously with Iraq.

Pelosi will never believe she bears any responsibility, either.

His blood is on Nancy's hands

Do you really think Assad needed Pelosi's stupidity to do this? Come on. She's an idiot but she is no more responsible for this than Condi is for Force 17 members getting chucked off rooftops in Gaza (or did they do the chucking?)

18 brent  Wed, Jun 13, 2007 9:10:30am

So Nancy cozied up to a murderous dictator while simultaneously thumbing her nose at the sitting US president and the UN.

What possible harm could come from that?

Aside from this assassination, of course.

Good job, Queen Botoxia!

The darkness drops again; but now I know

That twenty centuries of stony sleep

Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,

And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,

Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Worse yet, there's a darn good chance it might just be Bethlehem at that.

Assad has no reason to fear. Rice's State Department is pushing for direct talks with Syria and Iran to negotiate an orderly surrender in Iraq, and no matter how many UN commissions meet to investigate Syrian assassinations in Lebanon, they'll never go beyond strongly worded condemnations.

25 jayzee  Wed, Jun 13, 2007 9:15:32am

Blaming Pelosi for this is about like blaming Bush when Al Qaeda blows up a Mosque in Iraq. This proves Pelosi is a chump for thinking Assad was anything but the brutal dictator he is. But Assad was assasinating Lebanese government members long before Pelosi went on her mission of mercy and understanding.

BTW, Assad is an Alawite Muslim, and theologically, the Alawaites are far closer to Shia than they are to Sunni Islam, which may be one bridge between supposedly national socialist (ie, Ba'ath) Syria and theocratic Iran. Not to mention Iran has oil money to spend on terrorism, and Syria borders Lebanon and Israel.

Just something to think about, Syria has no problems targeting political leaders and innocent civilians in Lebanon, and Iran is hard at work developing a nuclear weapon.

Iran doesn't even really need to figure out how to mate a nuke to a medium range missile, if they can get a nuke into a bordering state.

Iran moves to execute porn stars

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Iran's parliament on Wednesday voted in favor of a bill that could lead to death penalty for persons convicted of working in the production of pornographic movies.

With a 148-5 vote in favor and four abstentions, lawmakers present at the Wednesday session of the 290-seat parliament approved that "producers of pornographic works and main elements in their production are considered corruptors of the world and could be sentenced to punishment as corruptors of the world."

The term, "corruptor of the world" is taken from the Quran, the Muslims' holy book, and ranks among the highest on the scale of an individual's criminal offenses. Under Iran's Islamic Penal Code, it carries a death penalty.

The "main elements" refered to in the draft include producers, directors, cameramen and actors involved in making a pornographic video.

The bill also envisages convictions ranging from one year imprisonment to a death sentence for the main distributors of the movies and also producers of Web sites in which the pornographic works would appear.

Besides videos, the bill covers all electronic visual material, such as DVD and CDs. Other material, such as porn magazines and books are already banned under Iranian law.

To become law, the bill requires an approval by the Guardian Council, a constitutional watchdog in Iran.

It is widely believed that the drafting of the bill came about as a reaction to a scandal last year, when a private videotape, apparently belonging to Iranian actress Zahra Amir Ebrahimi and allegedly showing her having intercourse with a man, became available across Iran.

The videotape was leaked to the Internet and released on a black market DVD, becoming a full-blown Iranian sex tape scandal. Ebrahimi later came under an official investigation, which is still ongoing. She faces fines, whip lashing or worse for her violation of Iran's morality laws.

47 lawhawk  Wed, Jun 13, 2007 9:21:35am

MSNBC is reporting at least eight dead in the blast.

The Lebanese Broadcasting Corp. said the explosion came from a bomb-rigged car, a method that has been used to assassinate opponents of Syria over the past two years. Syria has been accused of meddling in Lebanon's affairs, particularly by supporting the militant group Hezbollah.

Screams of agony
The body of woman, covered in blood, was seen being pulled away from the seen by local residents. She was screaming in agony. Another man was being carried away as police sealed off the area, which is near an amusement park and a military club.

The explosion shattered windows of apartments in the area, knocked down walls and scattered debris on top of parked cars.

The explosion was the latest in a series to hit Lebanon in the last three weeks as Lebanese troops battled Islamic militants in a Palestinian refugee camp in the northern part of the country.

As much as I dislike Pelosi (and that's a lot) and as wrong as it was for her to go to Syria and meet with the leaders there, it's really wrong, IMO, to blame her for this.
The Lebanese have been fighting (and for the most part losing) Syria for ages now. That Syria probably is responsible for this is, I think, a correct assumption.
But it's wrong to blame this on Pelosi.

That was before millions of Muslims came across the border from Syria and out-bred the Christians.

#49 WeaselZipper - I would suggest, in a more rational world, that it would be the time for us to step IN and actually provide our military to support, not just arm, the Christians and Druze.
Alas, I think if we could militarily neuter Iran first (which we can do without using nuclear weapons and without putting a lot of boots on the ground) then the job of dismantiling Syria and letting the Lebanese sort thing out for themselves would be so much easier and accomplish so much more.

60 lawhawk  Wed, Jun 13, 2007 9:28:55am

Meanwhile, the Lebanese military claims that they're now in control of the Nahr al-Bared camp where Fatah al Islam had holed up.

Syria has its grubbies all over these events in Lebanon, and that the Syrian government is not being taken to task is troubling, but not surprising given that Pelosi and others - including the pseudorealists of the ISG report, think that Syria can be bargained with and would hold to their side of the deal.

Dealing with Syria is nothing short of a suicide pact. Syria's proxies are able to take out their opposition and act freely while Syria can claim that they're not involved.

Everyone knows that isn't the case, and yet no one is willing to put a stop to it.

On "engaging" Syria,

What is the lesson from all this? Talking to Syria is useless. There's nothing to talk about. Our interests and theirs are diametrically opposed. This is precisely why France's Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said: "We are ready to talk with all personalities and representatives of groups who are in favor of Lebanon's unity, its autonomy and its territorial integrity. Pelosi is a worthless tool. Anyone with a brain should recognize that and it should come as no surprise she's being duped. Code Pink is capable of doing that.

The man I voted for President twice has said equally as stupid things. For instance, with respect to Vladimir Putin:

I was able to get a sense of his soul, a man deeply committed to his country and the best interests of his country.

Face it, the leadership in both American and Israeli governments has never been weaker - no matter what party you're voting. Hopefully, God will soon send us someone worthy of our great countries because right now, I'm not seeing anyone in the wings.

Unfortunately there is absolutely no shortage of stupidity in DC on both sides of the aisle. Pelosi's trip however was especially damaging because it showed a lack of unity.

Condi saying something, regardless of how stupid, can eventually be "taken back" by an official poicy shift. Pelosi will always be a traitor to this administration which weakens the impact any official policy shift will have because she created the impression there are 2 governments at work in the US.

What happened to the lines about it "all being America's fault" because of Israel/occupation/racism/kaffirism along with the standard accusations of "false flag" operations by the CIA/Mossad/Illuminati/Boy Scouts and a demand for "better understanding of Islam" because "irresponsible reporting like this" was driving people into the arms of the youths/radicals/freedom fighters/terrorists?

Honestly - MSM - can't get it right, won't get it right and don't have a clue ..

Wow, the ROP has been busier than usual all over the world in the past week. Watching Islam around the globe devouring itself like a flesh eating disease is rather amusing. May it continue uninterrupted.

93 Judith  Wed, Jun 13, 2007 10:16:59am
Judith how is Israel the safest place to be in a war?

Israelis know how to behave in a crisis. Israeli security is the best in the world. Stay in Tel Aviv, outside of missile range. Enjoy the complete lack of other tourists and visitors who always flee like rats deserting a sinking ship at the first hint of trouble. get great deals on everything from cab fares to restaurant charges because they are vying for your dollar, and enjoy the near empty beach. My daughter was in Israel through the war last year and except for having to cancel her planned side trip to Naharia and she had a great time. plus she was able to do some good, spending tourist dollars, doing some volunteer work ect. In some ways yoou get to see Israel at her best during a crisis.

And if you're getting in the way, or are in any real danger, they throw you out of country fast enough.

94 Judith  Wed, Jun 13, 2007 10:20:22am
I am not going to allow myself to worry...

Don't worry. After I went to visit my daughter there this past April I no longer worry about terrorism. I worry about her crossing the street and all those handsome fit buff Israeli men who all seem to have an insane passion for blond Canadian girls of mostly Scandinavian descent.

LOL. So I should wait for my dream trip to Israel when it gets really hot under the collar? Actually sounds pretty logical to me. Is it still easy to get into Israel (by air) for some American rube like me?

96 mikeyslaw  Wed, Jun 13, 2007 10:26:19am

I question the timing.

The message the late Pope John Paul II disseminated throughout the world was to always hope. So many examples we have in the Bible where G-d's hand brought peace unexpectedly. The three greatest virtues are faith, hope and love. Faith is requisite for the other two. Hope is really the outpouring of faith, that what you believe will come to pass. The greatest, love of all people, brother, neighbor and enemy alike, is what will unify the world in peace under the new law Christ brought us. Do not be afraid, and always hope.

We had no problem at all. British Airways through London was $500 less each compared to anyone else and we needed the stopover due to my husband's blood pressure issues on long flights.

I worry about her crossing the street and all those handsome fit buff Israeli men who all seem to have an insane passion for blond Canadian girls of mostly Scandinavian descent.

I'm glad she had a good time!

Nancy may not be responsible for the assassination, but she is to blame for further encouraging them to think they will not be punished for doing so.

102 arier_tzvi  Wed, Jun 13, 2007 10:55:01am

Sounds like Syria and Iran are ganging up on Lebanon. Syria made the first push towards all out war in the middle east with this move today. No question.

103 Ward Cleaver  Wed, Jun 13, 2007 11:06:36am

Nancy's off to her next care-about:

"Lebanon?!? That is sooo last year."

There. Fixed it for ya.

I support Israel all the way, but individual Israelis can be some of the rudest, most obnoxious people on the planet.

I agree with your take. Syria's been given an unspoken green light.

It's like 1990, when the State Dept. said that we wouldn't interfere in conflicts within the Arab world, which gave Saddam his perceived okay to go into Kuwait.

Evidently the road to peace had to be paved through this guy's body.

Thanks Pelosi for giving the Syrian government any sort of legitimacy.

LOL! You must have run into Russian Israelis. Resistance is futile with them. I guess it is all in the prespective. I didn't hit any of the infamous Israeli rudeness when I was there. OTOH my daughter has mastered the supreme Israeli bitch attitude that compliments that male obnoixousness and I did see her tear a few strips up one side and down the other with a few men, especially one poor guy who made the mistake of patting her bum in the bus. He'll never do that again. In fact, he probably turned gay after she got through with him.

108 siiras  Wed, Jun 13, 2007 11:27:57am

Pelosi is an ennabler as Chamberlain was in his day. Because she went to Syria as Speaker of the House and swanned around as an American decision maker, she gave the message loud and clear that Assad's bloody hands didn't bother her one tiny bit and that she and the large constituency she represents think nothing of undercutting their elected administration's foreign policy to further their tawdry election plans at home.

In other words, Assad was assured that he could have his cake and eat it too i.e. continue his destabilization of Iraq's and Lebanon's elected governments and get respectful treatment from America's leftist appeasers whom he had every reason to believe are on a roll. After all, he reads American newspapers.

It is a sad day indeed when the French get it right and the Americans are ass-kissing Mid-East dictators: [France's Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said: "We are ready to talk with all personalities and representatives of groups who are in favor of Lebanon's unity, its autonomy and its territorial integrity. This clearly means we don't have to talk to Syrian leaders."]

Condi Rice's performance is very disappointing. Instead of re-directing the State Department into support of the Administration's new foreign policy i.e. no truck with genocidal dictators, she has been brought to heel by leftist bureaucrat mandarins who never met a thug they wouldn't brown nose in the name of "stability" by repression. She's too weak for the job that should have gone to Bolton. What influence she has is dragging Bush into mistakes and contradictory messages. "We are not leaving Iraq until it's stable but we'll idiotically jaw jaw with Syria and Iran as though we don't all know that they are contributing to the destabilizing and killings".

The French guy got it right while Pelosi and Rice are dancing with dictators.

Oh please. You sound as looney as the left. Is she also to blame for "encouraging" the murder of Harisi? And if I recall correctly, Condi was smooching on Abbas long before Pelosi was Speaker. I don't think people in glass houses should throw stones.

The Syrians have been after the Lebanese parliament forever and they won't stop until either Israel or the U.S. stops them. If you're going to blame anyone but the SYRIANS try Olmert.

112 Alucard  Wed, Jun 13, 2007 2:10:03pm

I hold Nancy Pelosi partially responsible for this.

I had to take traffic school last weekend, and there was an Israeli couple in the back (how did they get traffic tickets at the same time?). They'd originally sat separately, and the rule was that once you'd taken a seat in the morning you had to stay there for the rest of the day. Well, the Israeli guy moved after the first break and that caused a problem with handing out court paperwork, which was done based on the order in which people sat. The good-natured retired cop who ran the class asked the Israeli guy why he had moved. The guy's response? "You don't want to mess with me."

The two of them talked in Hebrew, at a normal conversational level, throughout the entire class. It made for a really long eight hours. The woman did most of the talking; I had no idea what she was saying, but couldn't figure out she could not run out of things to say at some point. I started to wonder if the woman even shut up when she went to sleep at night.
