-RetweetMagic Bullets Discovered in Sadr City by AFP Photographer

Wed, Aug 15, 2007 at 9:45:56 am PDT

Sometimes the propaganda is so obvious it’s almost funny.

An elderly Iraqi woman shows two bullets which she says hit her house following an early coalition forces raid in the predominantly Shiite Baghdad suburb of Sadr City. At least 175 people were slaughtered on Tuesday and more than 200 wounded when four suicide truck bombs targeted people from an ancient religious sect in northern Iraq, officials said. (AFP/Wissam al-Okaili)

To make it even tastier, there’s another one from July 10, 2007, apparently featuring the same woman, holding another unfired round:

An Iraqi elderly woman inspects a bullet which she says hit her bed during an alleged overnight raid by US and Iraqi troops in Baghdad’s impoverished district of Sadr City. Residents said two people were killed and four wounded during the raid. (AFP/Wissam al-Okaili)

Gateway Pundit: BUSTED!... Bogus Baghdad Bed and Bullet!

UPDATE at 8/15/07 10:17:29 am:

Several LGF readers think the second photo may show the steel core of a fired .50 caliber round; but it’s doubtful that it hit anything.

Layers and Layers of editors don't know the difference between a bullet and a cartridge. Amazing.

If they can't winnow out obvious lies, why should we use the MSM for our news, instead of that wild, unregulated internet?

Oh, wait, we do.

36 maddogg  Wed, Aug 15, 2007 9:52:59am

Of course the editors don't know anything about firearms. After all, guns are evil, so the three monkey rule applies, no matter how stupid it makes them look. But they are likely fully as stupid as they look.

37 BrianW  Wed, Aug 15, 2007 9:53:15am

The bullet fairy must have visited her since she is such a good little girl and showered her with the gift of ammunition

38 bosforus  Wed, Aug 15, 2007 9:53:16am

42 pat  Wed, Aug 15, 2007 9:53:55am

What about Hezbollah's Miracle Tree?

Excerpt:

In Lebanon, tree is seen as sign of 'divine victory'
By Borzou Daragahi, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
August 14, 2007

BINT JBEIL, LEBANON -- Some would say Fatmeh Shaheen should know better. The 45-year-old psychologist is trained to recognize how a desperate mind might override its own sensibilities in search of solace.

But here she is, piling into this chapel-like building in southern Lebanon with hundreds of other Lebanese Shiites to pay homage to a miracle tree.

A dead, shellacked poplar trunk had somehow sprouted leaves after it was adorned with the names of 43 fighters for the Islamic militant group Hezbollah. They were killed in the war with Israel last year, a conflict that left hundreds of Lebanese dead and destroyed huge swaths of the country's Shiite Muslim heartland, perhaps setting the nation's most economically disadvantaged sect back even further.

"Can you have any doubts now?" the well-educated, trilingual professional asks as she stares, eyes aglitter, at the bright green leaves wiggling out of the dark brown tree trunk.

46 P. Aaron  Wed, Aug 15, 2007 9:55:11am

Them are some nice lookin' bullets there!

As Jocelyn Elders once said: "We need safer guns, safer bullets".

They must have been fired out of a safer gun.

Reminds me of a box of cheap blazer rounds I once bought at an indoor range, for a friend's Steyr GB. The gun started jamming, so we check some of the cartridges. They were cracked. Made in Egypt. No wonder they lost all those wars.

52 mom's no dhimmi  Wed, Aug 15, 2007 9:55:47am

Consider the mainstream media's fear and loathing of the 2d amendment, you can't expect them to have any working knowledge of firearms and ammunition. It makes them easy to dupe.

53 amphibian  Wed, Aug 15, 2007 9:56:09am

Dude. I've got this wide-eyed, can't-believe-they-think-I'm-that-stupid expression on my face right now. The AP/AFP stringer that put this up is likely one of thems, so he knows that bullets don't look like that when they come out of the gun. Apparently, the photo editors have never been out to a gun range, and Mr. Hajj (or whoever) -- what? wants to make fun of his bosses' ignorance? thinks that everyone from his bosses down to us is a huge boob?

I suppose someone out here who knows this stuff could identify the rounds and tell us what kind of Kalashnikov they're from.

I looked closely, it may two different old ladies, but it doesn't change the fact that one is clearly holding cartridges, not fired slugs. They obviously weren't fired at anyone.

In the second, the casing is not visible, but the slug is undamaged, from a large caliber weapon, and appears not to have been fired.

Is this the same old woman who wailed on cue in Lebanon last year?

Those are really pristine bullets she's holding, considering 2 went thro her house! The other one went into her bed? Photographic BS.

I don't really know anything about guns as we are not allowed to have them over here but those bullets come from different guns. Are the first ones from an M16 and the second from an AK or a heavier weapon?

Nothing new, the media elites know squat about military hardware and ordinance.

Remember the Cluster bomb / food pack "controversy"?

Seattle Slimes ran a huge expose in Feb. '02 and a picture of bunch of stuff laid out. I looked at the pic and said those look old and nothing like a US sub munition. Less than two minutes on the net ID them as Russian mortar rounds.

The MSM is anti-military so if helps the agenda, go with it and they are too F'in lazy to fact check.

Also, aren't those two rounds M193 ball? I don't think any of our guys are using that stuff anymore. Don't M855 bullets have a colored tip?

And isn't there a newsman on the planet who knows the difference between a bullet and a cartridge?

This is a pattern.

I remember the scene in the movie - True Lies.
Where one of the Crimson Jihad warriors fired a rocket from its launcher backwards. At that time, I said, nah, they cannot possibly be that stupid.

Oh well, I was wrong.

That's not what happened in the movie. The dumb jihadi launched the rocket out of the proper end, he just had no clue about the backwash that comes out of the other end of a shoulder-fired missile. His buddies knew, but didn't stop him in time. The missile can actually be seen flying at (and missing) one of the Harriers.

113 SDC  Wed, Aug 15, 2007 10:07:43am

It's obvious that the first photo shows two UNFIRED 5.56mm cartridges, and is therefore a "shake and bake" story by these so-called "journalists", but the second photo might actually be legit; it appears that she's holding a steel bullet CORE, as found in the M33 .50 calibre round. These routinely shed their jackets on impact with buildings, cars, etc., and are known to ricochet, so I wouldn't discount THAT photo entirely.

If you throw the bullets, there's always the chance you can get them back and throw them again.

Man, this is better than the Photoshopped plumes of smoke!

I don't think "journalists/photogs" take classes in Bullets 101 until their senior year. Must be lots of drop outs around.

I don't think that this "journalist" is a wide-eyed innocent fresh out of journo-school. I suspect that he at least knows what that "anti-war scarf" he's wearing really means.

Rule of thumb: Wait about three weeks and Bill O'Reilly is all over it.

Too funny, my husband says the same thing about O'Reilly and drudgereport.

I don't even think I was blogging yet at the time, but I recall being early to discover the "gassing Lieberman" item, which then quickly made the rounds.

The other night I heard O'Reilly mention it for the first time.

Another thing that annoys me with him is he always has to equivocate the despicable action by the left blogegrs by saying there are those on the right that do the same thing. Which is BS. Perhaps some small obscure blogs may traffic in vile material, but I'm not aware who they are, and they sure as hell don't get linked by the big blogs.

Every day, 24/7, the cesspools like Kos, DU, HuffPost spew bilge and they're embraced by the Democrat Party.

You may be right. But my recollection is that the rocket exited through the front window of the truck. I will play the DVD later and check it. Albeit, fact is stranger than fiction in this case.

Jewish and Druse youth declare war on draft dodgers

Tzameret, the youth movement of the Zionist Council in Israel, was joined at Nordiya by other youth movements and by dozens of Druse draftees.

The youngsters vowed to continue to campaign against draft dodging, encourage their peers to enlist and strive to be admitted to elite units. They also said they would pressure policy-makers to make it more difficult for teenagers to shirk their national service obligations.

Imagine a youth group trying to do this in the US, looking for deserters and encouraging enlistments. The MSM would paint them as being the Hitler Youth.

The point is not that there can't be legitimate debate. The points are (a) that we really have permitted anti-Semitism to survive here (repeat offenders have not been banned), and (b) if the goal is to elect Democrats, this is counter-productive.

This is not an anti-Semitic site. It is, however, a site that occasionally harbors anti-Semites, and for that we now pay a price.

It also adds substance to the idea that with every shot we fire, we are arming our enemies. Well, thank you Mr. Gore...

Hi Ginn.

Yes it is.

In Ancient Rome, professional fighters (not to be confused with Christians and lions) could pretty much fight with impunity. The only rule was that you couldn't go for the eyes or the scrotum. If an eye was gouged out then the fight was halted and the gouger automatically lost an eye as well. Hence the saying, It's all fun and games till someone looses an eye.

U.S. agents accused of aiding Islamist schemeA criminal investigations report says several U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services employees are accused of aiding Islamic extremists with identification fraud and of exploiting the visa system for personal gain.

The confidential 2006 USCIS report said that despite the severity of the potential security breaches, most are not investigated "due to lack of resources" in the agency's internal affairs department.

-snip-

Mr. Gonzalez's response, along with the 2006 USCIS document obtained by The Times, show a "pattern of national security failures that have put the nation at risk," the agency source said.

Another investigation involved more than seven USCIS and Immigration and Custom's Enforcement (ICE) employees — including special agents and senior district managers — who were moving contraband via "diplomatic pouches" to the United States from China.

ICE — the original investigating agency — downgraded the criminal investigation to a managerial problem, and the case was never prosecuted, a source close to the investigation said.

and there's also this story...

NSA wiretapping trial begins

But one rather obscure case could pull back the veil on a surveillance program that's at the heart of the US fight against terror. In the federal appeals court in San Francisco Wednesday, lawyers for a Saudi charity accused of helping Al Qaeda will argue that their clients, including two American attorneys, were illegally spied on without the required court warrant.

How do they know? Treasury Department officials inadvertently provided them with National Security Agency (NSA) call logs stamped "top secret."

By the time federal agents had retrieved the logs of recorded calls six weeks later, the information had been shared with five other lawyers, two officials of the Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation's US branch in southern Oregon, and a reporter with The Washington Post.

Because the government took back copies of the call logs, federal judges at the district-court level agreed to let those who saw them rely on their memory of what they saw as evidence. The judges also said that they have "standing" in federal courts – that they have enough of a case to sue the federal government.

Program Two: (9 months intensive) answers the basic question - How can you tell the difference between new and used bullets?

Program Eighteen: (1 week intensive) answers some practical questions - How Allah makes cellphones work, why the earth is flat, from which direction does the sun rise and finally why it is better to attack civilians than those who are armed?

Yes, the bullets haven't been fired. But note that the picture and caption are totally honest. Taking a photograph of someone lying, and reporting what they said in the caption, is still honest journalism. You could argue that it is the ultimate in objectivity.

Right! Guess you missed this one:

To make matters worse, back in July AFP moved another photo from the same photographer of the same woman holding another "bullet" that she says "hit her bed" during a night-time raid by US and Iraqi troops. It's not clear from the way she's holding it if she's holding a bullet or another unfired round. But the "magic bullet" is not deformed in any way from striking her bed, nor does it exhibit any "rifling marks" that would indicate that it was fired through a barrel.

And this one:

She is claiming that those bullets hit her house...& the only way that could have happened, in my estimation, is if someone chucked them at her dwelling..

However,..why publish this known to be false report in the first place?

And, you know. This one:

ah yeah. were the bullets THROWN at her house. cause they sure weren't "fired".

I'm afraid it totally ruined Chomsky for me.

This would have been an awesome piece of journalism, actually -- poking a finger in the eye of agit-prop among the Iraqi population -- had the caption only pointed out the glaring falsehood of the woman's claim. Something along the lines of "...holding clearly unfired high-powered rounds..."

Steel core armor round do have circular striations around

Not necessarily, depending on what it hit; I've done plenty of cutaways on ammo like this, and the cores customarily show lots of heavy machining marks (because they're made on automatic machinery), just as you see in the second photo. The M33 is fairly lightly-constructed as well, with a carbonate point filler, and when these rounds hit almost anything, they like to shred the jacket off. You can see several examples of cores like this in this photo: [Link: i124.photobucket.com...]

I don't know of any Indian women whose beauty is exactly improved by a nosering, either (although I'm willing to be convinced otherwise).

Exhibit A: No nosering here.

Oh, c'mon. I imagine that what Iron fist meant was, in India many women wear nostril rings, including the beautiful ones, while here... let's just say that the nose-ring demographic is very specific, and tends to self-select. Also, nostrils not being usual places for metal in these-here parts, the piercers of same often have a hardware store's worth of other facial metal. Which in my humble opinion, jest ain't perty.

390 Capitalist Tool  Wed, Aug 15, 2007 12:17:07pm

"Several LGF readers think the second photo may show the steel core of a fired .50 caliber round; but it’s doubtful that it hit anything."

That bullet looks a lot like an 8mm Mauser FMJ steel-clad bullet. Surplus military 8mm ammo is readily available in the US, but more importantly, Hajii and Muj are known to frequently use old '98 Mauser rifles. Look closely and you can see the boat-tail (rear end) of the bullet is just apparent next to her fingers/grip... hold a straight-edge to the bullet and you can see the boat-tail taper beginning.
The circumferential marks indicate that the bullet may have been gripped too loosely with pliers which were allowed to "slip" trying to remove the bullet from the brass case. No rifling marks are apparent, meaning the bullet was never fired, much less into her bed.

She no doubt has some sort of bullet-in-her-bed-fixation thing going on.

Did anyone else notice how these two sentences were placed and constructed?
" elderly Iraqi woman...bullets which...hit her house...coalition forces raid ...175 people were slaughtered ...more than 200 wounded"
The first sentence was written in the active voice, but the second was in the passive voice, implying that the former was the cause of the latter.
