Religion of Peace Riots in Bangladesh

Fri, Sep 21, 2007 at 8:39:19 am PDT

It’s Friday, the day of Islamic prayer, and worshippers in Bangladesh poured out of mosques and started rioting in the streets—over an utterly harmless and inoffensive cartoon. (Hat tip: Ringo.)

Street clashes have broken out in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, as Islamic activists protested over the publication of an “offensive” cartoon.

Witnesses say that hundreds joined the protest, even though such demonstrations are officially banned under the country’s state of emergency.

Police baton-charged some of the protesters as they tried to break through barricades.

The leading Bangla-language newspaper published the offending cartoons. Prothom Alo has since apologised for them and said that it has sacked an editor.

Islam is Bangladesh’s state religion and past governments have banned publications for insulting Muslim. The country’s religious traditions are moderate but some people believe conservatives are becoming more influential.

Witnesses say the violence began after Friday prayers, when protesters tried to break through barricades put up to prevent them reaching the Prothom Alo offices.

This is what they’re rioting about:

Translation:

* Boy, what is your name?
- My name is Babu.
* It is customary to mention Muhammed before the name.

* What is your father’s name?
- Muhammed Abu

* What’s this in your lap?
- Muhammed cat

Activists of the Islamic student group Bangladesh Students Majlish set fire to copies of the Prothom Alo newspaper and their magazine Weekly 2000, during a protest after Friday prayers in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Friday, Sept. 21, 2007. The activists demanded a ban on the paper and magazine after they published cartoons that Muslims said insulted their religion, police and the government said.

As long as you're not the one hit with bird shot or blasted with mace or the fire hoses, I'll bet being in a riot would be kind of fun.

When I was stationed in Alameda aboard the USS Chuck Wagon (CVN-70) back in the '80s, UC decided to evict some homeless people off of some land to build something. It was UC land. Anyway, big riot, on all the local TV stations, young people, many probably Berkeley students, smashing windows, rolling over police cars, and even set a couple of the police cars on fire.

A few people were arrested, but the city council voted not to press charges.

Now, I know, it is wrong to smash the windows of innocent business owners, and someone can get hurt when you set a police car with a gas tank on fire, and its wrong.

But being alone in a room with 20 barely clothed young college girls who had been stuck in an all girl dorm for six months, and were begging for action ("No, spank me, first!") would be wrong to, but it still seems like it would be fun.

Here's a little song parody for you, sung to the tune of "Zoot Suit Riot", by the Cherry Poppin' Daddies:

Who's that chantin' 'neath the trees?
It's two jihadis and they're on leave
Pipes and chains and swingin' swords
Who's your daddy (and cousin), yes I am
Fat cat came to play now he can't run fast enough
You had best stay away when the pushers come to shove

Friday riot, (Riot)
Throw away all your beer
Friday riot (Riot)
Pull a veil on your coal black hair
Friday riot, (Riot)
Throw away all your beer
Friday riot (Riot)
Pull a veil on your coal black hair

Blow up Daddy
A whipped up, flag-burnin' brown eyed man
A stray cat holdin' up his koran
Cut me Sammy and you'll understand
In my veins hot fatwa ran
You got me in a sway, and I want to swing my kris
Now you shepherds know, where your goats come for a kiss

Friday riot, (Riot)
Throw away all your beer
Friday riot (Riot)
Pull a veil on your coal black hair
Friday riot, (Riot)
Throw away all your beer
Friday riot (Riot)
Pull a veil on your coal black hair
You're in a Friday riot
You got me in a sway, and I want to swing my kris
Now you shepherds know, where your goats come for kiss

Friday riot, (Riot)
Throw away all your beer
Friday riot (Riot)
Pull a veil on your coal black hair
Friday riot, (Riot)
Throw away all your beer
Friday riot (Riot)
Pull a veil on your coal black hair
You're in a Friday riot

I'm curious as to how long after the cartoon was published that the rioting began. Seems like they all had a chance to see it and didn't get worked up about it until they went to Friday prayers.

42 jamgarr  Fri, Sep 21, 2007 8:57:25am

From the Angels Dancing on the Head of a Pin Department:

Here's what I'd like to see - a cartoonist publish a strip of drawings, beginning with a stick-man and progressing gradually through a series of drawings, each looking more and more like a realistic image of a man - gradually morphing into the last image being a clear representation of Mohammed. Then watch the debate within the seething community as to where the drawings crossed the line. (Of course, pointing out the absurdity of the cartoons-of-blasphemy issue in that manner would be wasted on the seethers.)

I suppose one could always wish for the acceleration of global warming that will submerge most of that backward object that has the effrontery to call itself a country, but I really do not wish ill on anyone, especially people as stupid and backward as these folks are. Alas, they are lost to the human race as far as intelligence goes. When you embrace a religion that has an "unfettered God" who may do as he (obviously not she) wishes at any time such as make an ant as big as an elephant or an elephant as small as an ant, you renounce scientific inquiry. Scientific inquiry postulates a force (God if you so wish) who has defined the rules of the game and then will play them for all eternity. If Eurabia ever wakes up (and America too) and forces these people to be productive, Darwin will take hold. Till then we have the tick on the dog. Little of any science has come from these people. Such as been ascribed to them has been plagiarized (like most of the Koran) from other sources.

53 JWM  Fri, Sep 21, 2007 9:02:05am

When offensive cartoons are unavailable, inoffensive cartoons are sufficient to start riots.

One has to wonder whether those rioting have actually seen the cartoon, or even know how to read. UNICEF doesn't have a literacy rate for the country, but UNESCO puts it at about 45% - depending on the age/sex.

CIA Factbook breaks it out a bit more:
definition: age 15 and over can read and write
total population: 43.1%
male: 53.9%
female: 31.8% (2003 est.)

Therefore, one must seriously consider whether mad mullahs are pulling strings in the Friday sermons and inciting their followers to violence, even over seemingly innocuous items.

Of course they have a reason...
1. They are mad that the whole world isnt Muslim
2. They are mad becasue its Friday and like the sheeple they are were told to be mad by their radical Imams
3. What Muslim isnt offended at anything at all? Life is offensive to them...thats why they are in such a hurry to kill themselves.

I, too, wonder just how spontaneous these riots are. These mass temper tantrums show governments, businesses, and individuals who really has the power in the society: the local imam. A government may allow freedom of speech, but that freedom means nothing when any bearded goofball with a koran can insure lethal consequences for exercising that freedom.

Welcome to the new face of terrorism.

Remember during the previous round of "danish cartoon" riots, various embassies were burned. The difference between the riots and simply bombing the embassies?

When they rioted, the bleeding-heart useful idiots apologized to them.

The terrorists are not stupid. They can access the same media, and they know how to manipulate those who easily allow themselves to be manipulated.

Expect to see more riots, for any BS reason they can come up with. When they give the liberals the excuse "We were insulted!" they get a free pass to do whatever they want.

I sincerely apologise for anything even intimating violence against law abiding people. As I reread my post I can definitely see how people would take it that way. I am sorry about that ambiguity.

re: #68 Catttt

I don't understand why this is offensive. Mohammed liked cats. Nine out of 10 Muslim men are named Mohammed. Why not everyone and his cat?

Do they actually have a reason for being offended?

No, they want an excuse to be offended. Nothing like a nice riot to liven up an otherwise boring day.

re: #86 Charles

Ironically, Charles, this young lady very nearly used the permanent banning stick on herself. The act itself was so unbelievably stupid that it is hard not to find it amusing that someone like this had the brains to get into MIT, which just shows the disconnect between intelligence and common sense. It is amusing, in the admittedly unhealthyway that the Darwin Awards are amusing.

That cartoon insults cats.
I have a cat.
I want to riot, seethe and destroy things.
The honor of my cat demands it.

Destroy the lace curtains?

Spray on the lace curtains!

At first I thought this story was another example of unreasonable, outrageous Muslim behavior. But after seeing that cartoon, I am livid! I'm taking to the streets. . .

This must be government sponsored or condoned actions. To my knowledge they don't have freedom of speech line the US does, yet they don't arrest anyone for inciting a riot?

Just start throwing these people in jail for inciting a riot. Better yet, just execute them, that tends to work better.

Cats > Mohammed.

Well everyone knows that humor, joy or laughter is haram, so this strip shouldn't have run in the first place.

Happy Friday everyone!

Excuse me, #104 but my cat would shred Muhammed and the camel he rode in on.

I don't understand, how a religion that condones loving goats and camels (literally) has a problem with cats and dogs.

It's in the Koran.

re: #107 missouri boy

my guess is that goats and camels are vegetarians and dogs and cats (and pigs) are omnivores? That's just a guess.

Read through all of the comments hoping someone would explain the joke. Embarassed to say I still don't get it. Was this a Nahoul joke that only insiders would get? But then again, if humor is not allowed, jokes of any sort would be a stonable offense, nes pas? Therefore, I really didn't miss a 'joke'.
Upon further reflection and working through the process of elimination, the cartoon appears to be a carefully crafted ruse. Using the Islamic definition of 'cartoon' (an unfunny, masked jihad message), observing the seething actions of the Islamic street, listening to their verbal expressions while seething, reading their poorly written and ungrammitical signs, the message in the cartoon seems to be instruction to 'seethe for no reason discernable to the western mind, blame it on the US, scare the wee-wee out of the liberals and continue to intimidate the infidels in order to achieve early and total submission'.
Just my uninformed opinion. And I won't be ashamed to admit if I am wrong.

re: #41 Aladin Sane

re: #71 Aladin Sane

Yes, this is what Friday services are used for in many RoP countries. Imams get their congregations worked up about something-- be it that cartoon, Northern European cartoons, a pope quoting an older dead pope, and of course, when things are just too quiet, joooos.

It works as a control on a population that has few individual rights, job/growth prospects, a despotic, totalitarian gov't., etc. By giving the 'unwashed masses' something to vent about that ISN'T actually about their lives, the powers in these RoP places maintain control and ensure their continued exploitation of the general population.

Very sad, and those populations just ride along. Only once have I heard of taking an imam to task, and that was in the territories when a pro-hamas cleric tried to incite a mostly pro-fatah crowd. The guy was banned, and apparently went into hiding. From peaceful death threats, you know.

Man! I hate being a Methodist!

When we get out of church services, our only excitement is racing the Baptists to the diner!

If you go to the 10:30 service, you beat the other Christians to Red Lobster by 30 minutes.

Carlos Mencia makes religious jokes more harsh than this little puff of air from Bangladesh. Mencia says it's OK to joke as God has a sense of humor. 'If you don't believe me go to the supermarket some time'. I certainly hope Allah is more merciful and compassionate than his followers.

Is it sorta of like an Islamic Far Side?

You guys know the Far Side comic with the School for the Gifted with a sign that says "pull" and the kid is pushing? The "school for the gifted" sign should be replaced with "Islamic Thinkers Society".
