-RetweetDaily Kos Quoted in 'Lions for Lambs' Ad

Fri, Nov 2, 2007 at 11:03:46 am PDT

The Robert Redford anti-war film Lions for Lambs is not getting good reviews in advance of its release, and if it tanks as many expect it will, it could jeopardize MGM’s financing.

Meanwhile, the filmmakers obviously know which audience they’re playing to—the Kos Kooks.

It's been all downhill for Redford since Butch Cassidy.

The Kos kiss of death ensures it'll bomb, but it surely won't be as pitiful a box office as the Jimmah Carter schlockumentary that raked in a pitiful 10K last weekend.

Didn't MGM do a bunch of pro-US military films? I mean if they can be pro-US Military, even if it was only briefly back in the 1940s, then they deserve it if their current war films tank and they go pffft... especially if they suck and root for the other side... even if only in a thinly veiled manner of being against their own side during the war... IMO hollywood has stepped over the bounds into treason with the current crop of anti-US/anti-Bush movies that essentially try to undercut the US war effort. Let the writers empty desks be the first step towards flushing the left from the left coast.

I gather you didn't like The Natural?

D'oh! How could I forget that?
I was an extra in that (cheering fan in the stands).

I thought that was you!

I could have stood in for Michael Madsen.

Actually, I found out how tedious filmmaking was. One scene for Redford to complete a slide into home must have taken six hours.

I also appeared for about five seconds in another 1984 flick nobody ever heard of.

I then retired from acting.

Strange Saudi story of the day...

Saudi bride in death row arranged marriage

RIYADH, November 2 (RIA Novosti) - Prisoners in Taif, a city in southwest Saudi Arabia, celebrated the wedding of a 16-year-old to an inmate due to be publicly beheaded for murder.

The Saudi Gazette said the bride's father, also on death row, had arranged the marriage on Thursday.

The wedding celebrations included a small dinner party for relatives and friends and a private meeting for the couple in an apartment organized by the jail administrators.

When asked about the reasons for the marriage, the groom said there was still a chance his sentence would be cut. Under the country's laws, capital punishment can be reduced if the murdered victim's family agree and are compensated.

Even if the execution goes ahead the bride will receive $26,000, as part of her dowry. But, the girl said she was happy with the marriage and was looking forward to giving birth.

Public executions are common in Saudi Arabia, which has some of the strictest laws in the Islamic world for murder, drug trafficking, rape and armed robbery. According to estimates, around 130 people have been publicly beheaded in the country so far this year.

Whoa! Not ever. Not for a minute. Tom's had his little brain washed so many times he doesn't even know what country he's in, much less what country, military, and tradition of religous freedom protects his peculiar space-alien worshipping cult.

I'm just loving one glorious little tidbit that's been in all the promos for the movie. Have you seen it yet?
Senator Irving (Cruise) tells Janine Roth (Meryl Streep) that the war on terror must go on as long as it takes and she retorts "so says the man in the air conditioned office."
? ? ? ?
Yeah, that's the punch line.
C'mon! It's supposed to be profound. Ironic.
Get it?
The people doing their jobs back in an "air conditioned office" aren't really part of it! They're not putting themselves on the line. They're... ummm... chickenhawks! Yeah!
Of course I seem to recall there were just under 3000 people comfortably esconced in "air conditioned offices" on Sept 11th.
The anti-American nutjobs either don't understand or refuse to acknowledge that there is no "in the rear," or "out of bounds" in this war.
The fact that this is the line they've chosen as the "big moment" in the promo speaks volumes.
If I watch this movie at all, it will be on a bootleg copy.
...or maybe by downloading it via Gnutella. Perhaps I'll buy a ticket to "Fred Claus" then sneak into the adjacent theatre.
Yeah, I'm confident it will bomb. Even the half-dozen Oscars the fifth columnists give it next spring won't save it.
Good riddance.

"The problems we have in news and journalism are about us not doing our job well enough," Bernstein said. "The ideal of providing the best available version of the truth is being affected by the dominance of a journalistic culture that has less and less to do with reality and context."

Bernstein, 63, said he believes an "idiot culture" is partly to blame for the dysfunction of political life in the United States.

"You can't separate the appetites and demands of the people themselves and what they are given," he said. "The blame simply can't all be put at the feet of those who present news."

U.S. forces kill 10 al Qaeda suspects near Baghdad

U.S. airstrikes killed 10 insurgents, two of them wearing explosive vests, in a raid southeast of Baghdad on Friday targeting a suspected militant leader with ties to al Qaeda, the U.S. military said.

American ground troops hunting the militant, described as a "foreign terrorist facilitator", were fired at as they approached a building in Salman Pak, 45 km (25 miles) southeast of Baghdad, a U.S. military statement said.

"Coalition forces engaged the terrorists and called for supporting aircraft to help suppress the enemy fire," the statement said. "When the enemy fire ceased, coalition forces found that 10 terrorists had been killed. Two of the terrorists were armed with suicide vests."

The U.S. military said an arms cache was found nearby with more suicide vests, heavy machineguns and anti-aircraft weapons.

In todays Stupid News from our friends in Saudi Arabia

MOSCOW, Nov 1 (KUNA) -- Russian Nuclear Power Agency Head Sergei Kiriyenko Friday called on Iran to join a Russian-based international uranium enrichment center, which should be established in countries in full possession of enrichment technologies.
Kiriyenko was referring to a Saudi proposal to establish a uranium enrichment center in a neutral country to provide uranium for nuclear reactors, including the ones in Iran. The Saudi proposal aimed at, among other things, easing concerns of the international community about the controversial Iranian nuclear program.

Rendition - $7,821,105 gross ticket sales. Studios make an average of 55% of that, that means under $4Mil. No information on how much they spent making the movie, but with a cast like Cruise, Redford and Streep, the 4 million left isn't enough to pay a single one of them.

God, I really love to see liberals in Hollyweird trying to "educate" the rest of us with anti-American propaganda flicks, smashing heads on the walls and asking themselves: what went wrong?

Meanwhile, "300" a warmongering, (read: patriotic-toned) flick casted with quasi-unknown actors = $70.3Mil in the opening weekend and... domestic gross total to date: $210,614,939 + Foreign: $245,453,242

You could argue that in perverse they are thereby being true to their anti-capitalist opinions/principles, and putting their money where their mouths are.

Actually I suspect it's because they're all arrogant baby-boomers who refuse to even contemplate the possibility that anyone other than knuckle-dragging troglodytes would disagree with them. They still think that everyone under 30 is their friend and ally. Look at the frickin' cast -- these are people who haven't had a new idea since Richard Nixon was president. They think that just by sticking names on the poster that their friends recognize the movie will make money.

Ask any 25 year-old droopy drawer punk who Robert Redford is and you'll likely just get blank stares, possibly "old actor." Meryl Streep? Isn't that what their ex girlfriend had and had to get the gritty cream for? Tom Cruise? Oh yeah -- the couch jumping guy.

Domestic numbers are meaningless. Global is what counts.

Waterworld was considered a bomb but made 100s of millions outside the US.

All of them will still be banned in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, you know, places like that are our allies when they need to count de monet.

Hmmm... Well, the thing about Waterworld is that here in the States a lot of people savaged it even while it was still being filmed, and thus well before it had had even made it to a sneak preview. I've seen this movie. I've got this movie on DVD in fact. It's simply not that bad a film. In fact, it was actually a fun little film, when you ignore certain stretches the writer(s) made here and there. But in the rest of the world, there weren't people savaging it, so people went to the theaters with fewer preconceived notions, and thus it did a lot better there.

Course, sometimes even with people savaging a movie, it does phenomenally well. Look at 300, which the Lefties all trashed, but it raked in so much money that even the makers of the film were stunned!

U.S. forces kill 10 al Qaeda suspects near Baghdad

U.S. airstrikes killed 10 insurgents, two of them wearing explosive vests, in a raid southeast of Baghdad on Friday targeting a suspected militant leader with ties to al Qaeda, the U.S. military said.

And now a Star Trek movie I haven't even heard of! Oh, no!

Doesn't matter, these had that bald French captain in them.

It turns out that Captain Picard is a major moonbat, which has ruined most Next Generation reruns for me for all time. What does Picard think his phasers and photo torpedoes were for? Get a clue, moonbat! Duh.

I thought Tom was a patriot.

Whoa!

I'll bet you can already buy it from the sidewalk vendors in the border towns of Mexico, for $5.

re: #257 saltmarsh

based on the picture, they should have named the movie "People Without Ears".

/probably on the cutting room floor

Actually, "People Without Ears" would make a great title for a satire -- or better yet, straight-faced drama -- about a group of Lefty politicians refusing to Get It, and living in their own dream world, while the rest of the country moves to the Right.

re: #233 NomadOfNorad

Well, the thing about Waterworld is that here in the States a lot of people savaged it even while it was still being filmed, and thus well before it had had even made it to a sneak preview. I've seen this movie. I've got this movie on DVD in fact. It's simply not that bad a film. In fact, it was actually a fun little film, when you ignore certain stretches the writer(s) made here and there.

Hey, Nomad. Can you explain to me how Kevin Costner's character got gills?

285 funkyfantom  Fri, Nov 2, 2007 2:00:59pm

Hollywood is so full of fresh, original ideas:

(from wikipedia)
The story begins after two determined students at a West Coast University, Arian (Derek Luke) and Ernest (Michael Pena), follow the inspiration of their idealistic professor, Dr. Malley (Redford), and attempt to do something important with their lives. But when the two make the bold decision to join the battle in Afghanistan, Malley is both moved and distraught.

Umm, err.. wasn't this more or less the plot of the 1969 Oscar winner "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie"?

286 Ezekiel2517  Fri, Nov 2, 2007 2:00:59pm

I was confused by that scene where Robert Redford dressed up as the Green Goblin.

287 NomadOfNorad  Fri, Nov 2, 2007 2:03:22pm

re: #284 Promethea

I don't think it was explained in the movie. Everyone treated him like a freak, though. My guess is, either he was some sort of happy-accident mutant, or he was genetically engineered.

Global Warming. Or, it was all Bush's fault.

Take your pick. :)

OK, here's a project... take the letters of the title: "Lions For Lambs" when it comes to a theater near you, change them around .. let's see ..
I'll start:

Salmon For Libs!

hey, at least I used all the letters ..

290 Promethea  Fri, Nov 2, 2007 2:12:39pm

If you look at the People Without Ears poster closely, you'll see that where the ears would naturally be are some protuberances that may be gills.

I blame Bush and global warming, but I'm glad that our species is evolving so we can all swim underwater without tanks. Thank you, Hollywood.

295 pittrader1988  Fri, Nov 2, 2007 2:59:44pm

Redford claims he has never had any surgery-and I believe him. He looks good for 70.

This is a blockbuster cast. Reviews are mixed. Some people will go just to see Streep and Redford. This is Cruise's first effort with United Artists.

The message is not only wrongheaded, it is trite. It is very easy to be critical of any war. Death never makes a pretty story, and killing is very distasteful to most of humanity. But it's part of it.

I would agree with the war protesters that bad intelligence got us into this war. Given what we now know about Iraq and WMD, would you have gone in?

That is fine, but what do you do now that the can of worms is open. We cannot abandon them. We cannot abandon the fight against radical Islam.

Ironically, the left is trying to link radical Christianity with radical Islam. Anything radical (unless you are a radical leftist) is bad. However, radical Christians aren't blowing themselves up and killing people. They did that in the 14th Century.

Hollywood doesn't get it. But it will never get it because it is full of artists that deal with emotions. Emotions are not facts.

296 FrogMarch  Fri, Nov 2, 2007 3:07:24pm

298 WALT C  Fri, Nov 2, 2007 3:43:23pm

With those three headlining I had no desire to see it before I found out what it was about.

Not a Cruise fan ever, can't say much more for Streep (although I did enjoy Death Becomes Her with Goldie Hawn and Bruce Willis), and the only Redford movie I ever really enjoyed was Jeramiah Johnson. Although the Last Caslte wasn't bad. But with him doing all that patriotism as a General, it was a bit of a stretch.

300 Heavy Josh  Fri, Nov 2, 2007 4:18:34pm

Well, I saw an advance screening of Lions for Lambs two nights ago here in Montreal. For free, so I don't feel too bad.

It is highly inaccessible. I'm doing my MA in history (Israel/military), my girlfriend's got an MA in history (though not in the relevant field) and we were amazed that this movie was even made. One has to have a pretty in-depth level of knowledge to understand the kinds of arguments this movie's making. It is not a simple "anti-war/nutbar" film.

That being said, though it is an anti-war film, I didn't find it particularly repugnant or offensive. The real point that is being made is that young people have to get involved in the political process and actually work for positive change. The secondary argument is that the leadership in Washington is not deserving of the military it is sending off to fight in Afghanistan (or Iraq), that is, the lions are fed to the lambs. The press is also indicted as being against the war in Iraq NOW, but was happy to cover the build up and initial attack with glee because those sorts of events sell media. Too much faith is put into intelligence reports that represent wish-fulfillment.

re: #116 Spiritualized

You can tell it's a serious movie, just like at Tom Cruise's face. That's acting! ...Or constipation. It's definitely one or other.

Actually, I think all three are trying not to fart -- politically incorrectly, you know.

Reminds me of the South Park episode where the San Fran libs capture their own farts into their wine glasses because of course, their farts smell better than ours...

303 Heavy Josh  Fri, Nov 2, 2007 4:26:13pm

cont:

I was much more impressed with the points made in this movie than in say, Sicko or Bowling For Columbine. I can't stress enough just how central the idealism of young people is to this movie. And I don't mean in the "liberal idealism" sense. No, this movie is actually advocating that perhaps a year of some sort of national service should be required by ALL students in their junior year of college. It need not be military service, but that is one option. Lions for Lambs is suggesting that the selfishness of the classic American dream is problematic, and contrasts it with the idea that on July 5th 1776, December 8th, 1941 and Sept. 12th 2001, the American Dream was something much more powerful and just that it normally is.

So I would suggest actually going to see Lions for Lambs. It's not the dishonest drivel of Michael Moore and it's certainly not a one-dimensional political rant. But it is not a normal movie in any respect. The best way to put it is that it's an essay in movie form.

304 Heavy Josh  Fri, Nov 2, 2007 5:09:15pm

It has also been pointed out to me that:

1. Don't go see it in theaters. Rent it. This movie is far too dense to absorb in one 90 minute sitting. It'd be easier to understand in the comfort of one's own home, turning it off and discussing it at points.

2. The apathy and cynicism of today's youth is blamed just as much as the willingness of politicians to sell out the military for their own gain and the willingness of the press to sell the government's line for ratings.

Also, it can be argued that Lions for Lambs is not actually an anti-war movie. The military option is never dismissed out of hand, and it's recognized that islamic fundamentalism is a real threat that needs to be dealt with. It is not saying that diplomacy is the only answer. The movie is more focused on criticizing what was actually done because of the failures of US policy. It never says putting US troops in Afghanistan/Iraq was wrong, but says that the methods and means of their deployment are problematic.

Also, for you non-Americans on LGF, this movie is worth seeing. Canada and Britain are both involved in Afghanistan, and audiences outside of the USA can't dismiss this film out of hand.

306 Promethea  Fri, Nov 2, 2007 6:07:38pm

I get the last word on this dead thread!

For those recent posters who think that there was "no WMD," please read the Duelfer Report. This "no WMD" nonsense has been spun by our dishonest media who make up stuff as they go along and forget to give us the bigger picture.

There is plenty of evidence that Saddam was planning to make Iraq a nuclear power. Lots and lots and lots of evidence. If we had not taken him out, then in this year 2007, he would probably already have become a nuclear blackmailer. Someone should write an alternate history story to illustrate this idea.

And imagine if one of his monstrous sons had suceeded him in office. I shudder to think what our world of 2007 would be like.

Please people. Learn to think ahead. Especially you history majors. Surely you know by now that the wheels of the gods grind slowly but surely. Why did Daniel Webster call the Missouri Compromise of 1820 a "firebell in the night"?

Think about it.

How tall a box did they have to build to make it look like Tiny Tom is the same height as Robert and Meryl?

Not really, Tom might actually be taller then Redford...he is a short little man and Meryl is not exactly statuesque.

Answer: I stand to flush down turds. This movie looks like it will need two flushes!

I think they make these movies knowing full well they will be box office flops. The low numbers simply prove how special they are as part of the minority of elite, sensitive, art-ellectuals who truly "get it". This is their "contribution to humanity".

Groan.

Those are the same type of glasses that the reporterette was wearing during that attempt to ambush the Governator to push the DNC construct that the CA fires were somehow aggravated because CA was shorted equipment that was sent to Iraq...so it was Bush's fault. Of course Arnold cut her rhetorical legs out from under her.
The progessive females must be under the delusion that that those frames make them look somehow "smart," but it just looks like "posing" to the rest of the world.
