Another DOS Attack

Tue, Oct 21, 2003 at 2:04:07 pm PDT

Yes, we’re back after another Internet terrorist attack; the same jihadis attacked the same IP address again on the same server at Hosting Matters, even though Internet Haganah is no longer there. Not too smart, these clowns—but they don’t have to be smart to cause a lot of damage.

What do you expect from radical Muslim..they do not know how to use technology to do anything but destroy...whether airplanes or computers, these things that they couldn't dream of creating themselves they can only take and use as weapons. Pathetic.

4 Yossarian  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 12:07:09pm

Nothing can keep LGF down for long. Yay for Charles!
Instapundit's down too...same attack?

Woo-hoo! Glad you're back.

6 LibraryGryffon  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 12:07:30pm

Well, it could be just that they're not very smart, but it could also be a reprisal aimed at Hosting Matters for having that site in the first place, and then helping them after the DOS.

I actually had to do some work today since I couldn't get to any of my regular sites!

7 billhedrick  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 12:08:09pm

yup, they are attacking Hosting Matters and it looks like Charles is one of the first back.

8 Ed Moran: Die! Rat Faced Bastard  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 12:09:48pm

Little damage- Charles, do you call 4 hours of raw panic and fear little damage
Posted on previous thread 5 minutes ago ( but not a DoS attack)

"Where did LFG go?

I saw a plane very high up ( I should say I saw the contrail) doing a racetrack pattern over southern HOU, and I'm thinking, they've scrambled F-16s from Ellington, something is happening ( the contrail appeared to be from either a one engine aircraft or a two engine AC with engines close together), maybe a terror threat, and then I get on LFG, or rather I don't, and I'm thinking maybe the Iranians got the bomb sooner than we thought and LAX was a puff of smoke.

But then I logged on to Haaretz, no story about LA nuked, lead story some splodeydopes trapped in a mosquito by the IDF, and I calm down a bit.

Ed Moran, et al.

Dang! You're as paranoid as I am! I leave for a few hours, come home, connect to the internet and blammo!
No LGF, no HostingMatters so I know it's all down...again.
It's too bad we can't respond to these creeps with a computer virus. Give 'em something to seethe about.

Oh yeah, Charles glad you're back on line. :)

17 Pete  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 12:15:00pm

I forgot where I saw this, but the programs used on the client attackers may have had the IP hard-coded (or at least defaulted) to the old Haganah IP -- haganah didn't take the IP with them when they went. Could that have been the cause?

18 pbird  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 12:16:13pm

By the way, not that this is relevant or has any bearing on today's events, but I just feel like sharing:

21 Let's Roll  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 12:17:08pm

I wonder if it was done by the people who always demand their right to free speech (as though we're the ones taking it from them) and accuse everyone else of oppressing them? You know the ones I'm talking about, I think.

23 Ed Moran: Die! Rat Faced Bastard  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 12:17:54pm

Maybe it was just because it was so clear that I noticed a plane way up flying a racetrack pattern.

Or maybe it wasn't...

Was it Morlocks or Jihadis? Or an alliance of both?

32 quark2muchomanycrowssquirrelsanddeer  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 12:28:16pm

I've been outside, but didn't notice the contrail. I have seen some curious ones of late though. I don't know if CAP is still flown over Houston, although I think the planes are usually on hot standby.
Keep your eyes lifted upwards always and ever, you never know who'll you'll see. :)

How many more attacks are you allowed Charles? I mean like true believers, they are limited on how many times they are allowed to fart in a life time, so is that relative to your allowance of down time?

Glad you're back Charles!

37 Ed Moran: Die! Rat Faced Bastard  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 12:31:41pm

Gots to go home now to cash le paycheck.

My domestic partner has a PTO meeting, so I will shake and bake her pork chops, while I shall pan fry 2 or 3 chops in olive oil and steam some broccoli and top it with a dab of real creamery butter.

Lost 8 pounds in 6 days on Atkins induction.

Of course, a while ago I came across a web site that claims the real meaning of Peter's vision in Acts 10 wasn't that Christians could enjoy ham w/ pineapple and marachino cherries, but rather that Gentiles were eligible to be Christians, the implication that Christians really shouldn't be eating pork. But pork is what is defrosting, and it is cheaper than steak.

What I love is lamb, but lamb is hard to come by at a decent price at the working class north suburban Houston Kroger's ( where Arab woman on the dole buy groceries and AIDS infected teenage girls catfight in the baby-food and feminine hygiene aisle)

38 Mordred  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 12:32:29pm

I am SO glad you're back, Charles!

45 Lumiere  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 12:36:00pm

I don't know anything about this kind of thing but is it possbile that these attacks are no longer aimed at Internet Haganah specifically but at LGF or Instapundit or any of the other pro-Israel sites that are hosted by Hosting Matters? Since they can bring down the entire network, it would seem to serve their purpose very well which is kill off any criticism of their pro-terrorist, anti-Jewish agenda.

46 Mordred  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 12:38:01pm

Instapundit is finally back up.

47 Flaming Sword  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 12:39:01pm

Hey Ed Moran:

If I do say so myself, I cook *restaurant quality* porkchops myself! Try them sometime with the following:

*liberal amounts of coarse black pepper
*cayeinne (amount depends upon your love of "heat")
*a tiny bit of garlic
*liberal amounts of onion powder

The result is a completely Atkins compliant chop that has enough flavor to get and keep your attention!

48 Ed Moran: Die! Rat Faced Bastard  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 12:39:53pm

Falming Sword-

Sounds tasty. I have all those at home, shall try.

49 Ed Moran: Die! Rat Faced Bastard  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 12:41:14pm

Although I like garlic powder, so I may go a touch over "tiny".

I may even have time to brush my teeth before Mrs. E gets home from the PTO meeting.

50 Ed Moran: Die! Rat Faced Bastard  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 12:41:51pm

Mang, I gotsta go or the bank will close.

51 Charles  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 12:41:51pm

Lumiere: Hosting Matters has stated that the attack was directed at the same site, even though it's not at that address now.

It's not out of the question that they would mount a general attack against the blogosphere, and we may see that sort of thing happen, but I don't think that's what happened here. They went specifically after Internet Haganah because Aaron is hurting their command and control facilities by getting their sites closed down.

52 scaramouche  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 12:43:17pm

I read somewhere this morning that only one per cent of the Muslim world is using the Internet. If that figure gets any higher LGF and other anti-jihadis may well experience even more down time.

64 Macula  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 1:03:34pm

Time for a donation to Internet Haganah.

Click here and get them back online.

From their website

In case you hadn't heard, the public sites of Internet Haganah, haganah.us and haganah.org.il, were knocked offline by a distributed denial of service attack. The attack was engineered primarily by Al Qaida supporters, and participants were recruited in a number of Arabic-language forums, most of which are hosted in Malaysia. The attack appears to have been a largely Saudi/European operation, but what details we have to support that claim will *not* be released by us or by our service providers. We'll settle accounts with the people responsible, and with the web sites and companies involved in this incident, at whatever time may suit us. We have a long memory for such things as this, and we are patient.
65 Lorenzo  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 1:06:49pm

Look, I will repeat this again:

Does anyone know the names of those Americans killed in the bomb blast in Gaza last week. This is personal.

68 Laura SF  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 1:08:22pm

I don't understand why it took (takes) Hosting Matters so long to block the attack if it's directed at a specific host.

Maybe it's something about their specific network configuration, but from what I understand, you can usually put a deny rule in the most "distant" router that says any incoming packets with a destination of should be dropped.

Even if the attack is directed at a subnet rather than a specific host, at least the rest of the network would be able to continue to function.

NB: I am not a network guru, but I do have some experience in network security, specifically DDoS detection and mitigation...

76 Charlotte Raven's Bloody Nose  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 1:29:29pm

If jihadis and their rat-bastard media slave supporters will not respect rule of law and freedom of expression, they are not entitled to protection under these principles.
The DDOS attack is probably the leading edge of jihadi technical prowess; but, as many have pointed out, it is literal child's play compared to what certain American techno-hobbyists can do.
It is their decision to abandon free discourse, let them feel the consequences.
The Fifth Column has declared war, let there be war; and let it go on until they scream for mercy; not that anyone will hear them beyond the range of their own voices.

What's stopping us from launching our own DOS attacks against the arabs? Besides laziness and good manners, of course...

83 Kathy K  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 1:50:32pm

Laura,
HM had 'denied' the address but the problem was that the DDOS was clogging up their upstream and their backbones were being unhelpful (AT&T and QWest).

Any rate, what they ended up doing is getting AT&T and QWEST to " break out our /20 and start advertising the individual /24s instead, and then drop the /24 containing the target IP. What this means is that instead of advertising all of our IPs, from the first one to the last, they will advertise each block on its own, from 0 through 255. "

Which also meant they had to swap IP's on a number of servers. LGF was evidently not one of the ones they had to swap out. Some of the rest of us were. My site's back up now, and it looks like most everyone else is, too.

84 Kimberly  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 1:56:05pm

#80 - What asswipes. When their statements are so extreme, and so dumb, that you just can't satirize them, it's hard to believe that they were able to figure out how to plug in their computers, much less turn them on.

89 Beck  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 2:09:50pm

The targeted site is no longer on Hosting Matters, but they were sending the attack against an IP address, not the URL. The IP address was still part of Hosting Matters' network.

Today they had the IP address removed from their network so that attacks on that IP will no longer affect HM-hosted sites.

I think I actually followed that! It makes sense - should work unless (until?) the idjots decide to go for a broader attack.

I've heard that the large backbones can be pretty unhelpful in responding to DDoS attacks. They hate messing with their routers, I guess. Lame...

Glad folks are coming back on. I guess the rest have to wait for the new DNS entries to propagate?

Thanks again. I do not go to yahoo often and the other hits were not giving me the names.

Regarding "my people", the person I was concerned with was a friend I served with in the Army for 3 years. As most of the guys in my platoon, he is a decent, nice guy, but as we are all middle aged raising families, persuing careers and living our lives we don't have much time with staying in touch. We just drift in and out, but always stay in touch when time allows. I was suppose to visit "Jon" this fall in Israel, but our schedules would not allow it.

Interesting thing over there how comparing us all to Nazis is still going strong. Byron York, I think it was, on Fox's Brit Hume said the same. He said the millionare backing the new Lefty network touts a Bush grandfather's ties to the Nazis.

But they seem to ignore the Islamofascists that they're rooting for at Atrios, so I've taken to calling one of them a Fascist-enabling Useful Idiot. Man, watch the sparks fly. They have no clue.

Welcome back, Charles.

As my contribution, here is a great op-ed on the Malaysian moonbat's speech:

OBSCENE EXCUSES

The kicker, it's on-point and it's by a Muslim (Amir Taheri). An excerpt:

. . .

With his speech, Mahathir did great harm to the cause of those who believe that, as an existential reality, Islam needs to be subjected to serious critical reexamination.

Mahathir's "us-and-them" dialectics belongs to a tribal mentality that has no place in the modern world. He forgets that the Iran-Iraq war, in which a million people died, was not an "us-and-them" conflict. Nor was it "the other" who tried to wipe Kuwait off the map in 1990.

Are Jews raiding Algerian villages at night to massacre entire families, including babies?

Are Jews murdering thousands of Muslim women each year in the name of "honor-killing"?

Are Jews throwing acid at girls who do not wear the hijab?

Is it "the other" who has arranged for Muslim countries to have almost half of all political prisoners in the world?

And who is carrying out those thousands of executions, sometimes by chopping people's heads in public or stoning them to death?

Are Jews preventing Muslims from choosing their governments in free elections? Are they arranging those elections in which government candidates always win with 99.99 percent of the votes?

Are Jews controlling the economies of the Muslim nations - or should we look to our own ruling elites, whose greed knows no bound? People often talk of the need for the separation of mosque and state in Muslim countries. A more urgent need is the separation of business from government.

Mahathir says Jews have persuaded others to fight and die for them. Who does he mean by "others"? If he means the West, let us not forget that Americans and Europeans fought and died to save the Muslim peoples of Bosnia and Kosovo from extermination. Not a single Muslim state provided any help.

. . .

Charles, nice to have you back!

My blog was down too, and for that I am honored (if unworthy of the honor).

Considering the openly anti-Semitic stance of Malaysia's president, I don't think there will be much cooperation over there. Might the country listen to a well-coordinated call for a boycott of Malaysia? (After all, Malaysians boycotted us for defending ourselves.)

#31 Mordred
Was it Morlocks or Jihadis?

I volunteer with Haganah internet.

As Charles already clarified it is Jihadis and Haganah Internet was indeed the target.

They have been going after his website for months now --and when it was just his, he was able to keep it up with continuous monitering the data and logs.

One thing though --their weakness is they will brag about it --they are already talking about on the Jihadi forums and those in Arabic will need to be translated.

It will get tracked down --they don't have enough sense to keep their mouths shut because they don't believe ANYTHING they do "for Islam" is unethical or illegal.

That was rough this afternooon, actually trying to work. Golly, it is scary to know most of the intelligent politically oriented websites can be taken down that easily.

Could anyone here, translate this?

Glad you be back Charley!

late to the party once again, and find I've missed out on all the fun.

we call these guys cyber-shaheeds, they'll run till somone pulls their plug or they finally get the call-up for a real suicide mission.

as for being back up, Haganah is alive and better than it was before this began. four mirrors up and mostly fuctional:

site 1
site 2
site 3
site 4

hope to have at least four more such mirrors up and running by the end of the week, G-d willing. these are all (or at least they are supposed to be) complete and fully funtional copies of our site.

come tomorrow we start to zero in on the sites that hosted the initial planning and recruitment discussions that appear to have led to this attack.

the wine of the evening is Barkan Galil 1998. a fine beverage. I drink a little more and I might just get to both slumber and sleep for a couple of hours.

104 zulubaby  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 8:09:20pm

aaron, you're amazing. Keep going.

105 aaron  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 8:14:33pm

fiery celt:

on the page you refer to, they are claiming credit for this attack. an email address associated with the account was created within the last few days, and we're speculating that the account as site were created expressly for the purpose of gloating over the damage done and encouraging follow on attacks. I say this based on a preliminary report of the site's content. we're waiting a more complete translation, and archives have been made. of course, every islamist and his brother wants to claim credit for this thing, so there's no way to know for sure who's telling the truth (without getting our hands on them).

this is a free site, and if someone will bother to contact these guys:

[Link: www.freeservers.com...]

they'll probably yank the site asap.

106 aaron  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 8:23:16pm

zulubaby: thanks! we've been on the receiving end of a great deal of moral support, not to mention donations (without which we'd be dead in the water right now). I'm actually at something of a loss for words.

107 fiery celt  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 8:27:58pm

Thank You Aaron,

G-d Bless You and Good Luck... :-)

108 zulubaby  Tue, Oct 21, 2003 9:21:01pm

aaron, what fiery celt said. You deserve all the support you get. Thank G-d for you and Charles -- both of you are my heroes too. (Tell rosh her post made me cry a little).

#81 NTropy,

THANK YOU so much for the tip...i looked at that site and it seems awesome ;) much appreciated...looks like good fodder for the procrastination, too!

A somewhat alarming (not least for the shocking comments by their web host) discussion of this event here...

112 chinditz  Wed, Oct 22, 2003 5:02:10am

Welcome back big C.

OT had anyone noticed yet that there are quite a lot of syrian "jets" dropping out the sky's lately?

113 chinditz  Wed, Oct 22, 2003 5:03:11am

Sorry jordanian.

Found at least three such cases in the past couple of weeks.

aaron (#105),

You were right. Freeserver took down the site, just got an e-mail from them in response to my e-mail about their participation in the DoS attack.

Thank you for reporting to our abuse department. Our company has zero tolerance for violations of our Acceptable Use Policy. We have contacted the owner and have requested the violation be removed, or we have removed the offending web site.

On a side note, to describe you, Rosh, and your crew at Internet Haganah as amazing, incredible, or heroic just makes those words seem all the more inadequate. You really are exceptional.

116 papertiger  Thu, Oct 23, 2003 1:24:24pm

for all our veterans of the recent cyber war ( the bloggers who were knocked out by the DoS attack , not the viewers who were merely inconvenienced ) The Dissident Frogman has created a red badge of courage for you days in the trenches. [Link: www.thedissidentfrogman.com...] It's not really red and it's not really a badge But it is kind of cool. and it is just for bloggers who survived the jihad.

117 rosh  Thu, Oct 23, 2003 7:11:27pm

Dissident Frogman has created a very cool badge and I'll be helping myself to one as soon as I dig myself out from under this pile of work this cyberjihad crap has created for us. I'm honored to get a badge... a pixel medal... a pixal...
He said a really beautiful thing on his blog too about people coming together against this.
I have to say, the way everybody responded by creating a second blog, a second site -- that was awesome!! Y'all SMART people :)
