The American public is responding to the Gaza war about the way the media wants them to.
[Link: [Link: www.rasmussenreports.com...]...]
Although we are a fair, clever and just people, we can only operate on the basis of the information we are given. The machine that was turned against Sarah Palin is now aimed at Israel. This is why the best hope for Israel is to stay out of the news. The news is in enemy hands, just as in the Iraq war. The healthiest way to do that now is succeed with the Iron Dome project in order to achieve some protection from Hamas and Hezbollah missiles. Israel needs to disengage from Hamas with a missile defense, just as it disengaged from Fatah with the security fence. I'm not saying that's easy.
Success with Iron Dome also plays strongly to American interests. Despite what the media says, the American public will be served if our ally developed a workable anti-missile defense.
Luigi, you said it EXACTLY! I keep waiting for an item in the news (or on a blog since the MSM will NOT want to report this) that Israel has knocked down even a single rocket in flight back over Gaza. I waited for it in Leb II and was hoping they would field something (anything!) to do this during this Gaza op. Before the ground guys go in. TODAY! I'm not sure what the holdup is, because I'm thinking they have the pieces, but maybe not put together as a system. Go Israel! Do this!

2010 Ford Shelby GT500! Ford makes New Year's Day introduction
A New Year’s Day introduction of the new 540-horsepower 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 means forget the Rose Parade, forget the bowl game and regret the hangover. The 2010 SnakeStang is the most powerful Ford SVT-tuned ever—and it’s even a smidge greener, the SVT team reducing highway fuel consumption by two miles per gallon of high test compared to the previous GT500.
2010 Ford Shelby GT500 cobra badge on fender detailThe bump to 540 horses means the standard—if that phrase can be applied to any Ford Shelby Mustand—GT500 matches the output of the 2008 Shelby GT500KR, the 1000-unit limited edition given extra tweaks by Ford’s SVT performance products division. Said racing and performance car legend Carroll Shelby, “We are proud of the many enhancements that were developed jointly by the Ford and Shelby Automobiles team last year that we’ve now incorporated into the new 2010 Shelby GT500.“
Ford’s Special Vehicles Team matched the extra power of the supercharged and intercooled 5.4-liter dual overhead cam V-8, which is also rated at 510 lbs-ft of torque, with enhancements to the drivetrain, including a revised dual-plate clutch.

Fascism Had a Good Year
Austrian far-right political parties won their greatest victory since the end of World War ii on September 28 when two pro-Nazi parties won nearly a third of the vote in Austria’s federal election. On October 1, the Scotsman wrote:
There is something rotten in the psyche of Austria that allows a protest vote against mainstream political parties to morph into an endorsement of the extreme right. Make no mistake, getting a third of a country to put their X next to the names of men who think SS soldiers were honorable, who want to deport any immigrant caught so much as shoplifting and who want to repeal a law banning Nazi imagery, takes more than mere political chicanery.
It takes a national will. The victory for the immigrant-hating, Nazi-idealizing rightist parties on Sunday was a stunning example, if any more were needed, of this land’s inability to deal with a monstrous past.
***************
This shift to right-wing conservatism across Europe is unifying nations on the Continent in the face of some of its problems. This presents a scenario that will allow a single European nation to rise up and dominate a united, imperialistic continent.

333 is down about 60 from last year, but still far too many for Philly.

Nutter is a nut.
The city released their plans for our next contract agreement (due in June-July). If you read what they are putting on the table, you would be violently ill.
They want to take away four of our eleven holidays (including Veterans Day), and they want to be able to "furlough" personnel. basically, that means they can indiscriminately lay off officers for 30 days without pay or pension time credited . . . but they expect the furloughed officers to still come to work - for free!
Yeah, four officers murdered in 2008, and this is their gratitude.

Some reading for evolutionary lizards today, just noticed this:
Morality and Evolutionary Biology
E.O. Wilson suggested that “the time has come for ethics to be removed temporarily from the hands of the philosophers and biologicized” (Wilson 1975, 562). For their part, moral philosophers will hasten to point out that they are not primarily in the business of “explaining moral behavior” in the sense of causally explaining the origins of our capacity for moral judgment or of various associated emotional and behavioral dispositions. If a moral philosopher asks “whence morality,” she is more likely to be concerned with the justification of moral principles or the source and nature of obligation. Still, there are important potential connections between the scientific explanatory issues and philosophical ones, opening the way for profitable interdisciplinary inquiry.
...
If so, then it would be part of evolved human nature to employ moral judgment in governing human behavior, rather than a mere “cultural veneer” artificially imposed on an amoral human nature (de Waal 2006).
If this is your idea of fun, Happy New Year!

Livni: No legitimacy to Hamas through truce talks:'Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni told French counterpart Bernard Kouchner Thursday that Israel was rejecting his country's 'humanitarian ceasefire' proposal.
Officials in Livni's office said no humanitarian crisis exists in Gaza, therefore there is no need for a ceasefire of this sort. 'Way to go, girl!
Yeah. France's ceasefire is the only ceasefire that would involve only one side ceasing their fire. So France would set up the old status quo... Israel sitting still under fire. I can't imagine Sarkozy actually thinks Hamas will stop the rockets, so shame on him for wanting Israel to go back to sitting under rockets. I guess he figures that if France is willing to have exploding cars in their neighborhoods every day and night, Israel should be able to put up with rockets. Israel needs to NOT look to the Euros for any guidance or to be much of an ally. The Euros have a rotten to the core record regarding Jews and lately have a rotten record regarding enforcement of ANY laws when immigrants are involved.

Hasn't been leaked yet, but most of the people in Philly don't care. There will still be cops on the street, and that's all they care about. The fact that Nutter is closing 7 fire stations - and that is common knowledge - and no one cared is example enough for me.
Yeah - reminds me of the time a few years back when Gord, still chancellor of the Exchequer, was going to cut the Firebrigades here in the UK back - reduce payment, 'streamline' services.
Firebrigades actually went on strike - the Army had to step in.
Gordon stayed his hand, for a bit, then did it by stealth anyway ...

305 | razorbacker Thu, Jan 1, 2009 9:35:59am |
Christmas Eve the wife said that she wanted to go somewhere where children were going to open Christmas presents, so we packed up the Vic and headed south to Arkansas2. And next morning, after opening and admiring the various gifty sortathangs under the tree I volunteered to fix breakfast cause that looked to be the easiest job open.
I was sitting amongst the remains and chatting with the grand nephews about this and that. One wanted to know how big a deer did I get this year, and could he come see me next year and go hunting and if he killed one would I help him get it undressed. A gracious conversationalist, I attempted to move the focus from razorbacker to their past year (besides, I already knew what I had done, I wanted to hear about their lives as missionaries in Mexico) so I asked, "Did anything exciting happen to y'all this year?"
Naw. Nuthing never happens in Mexico. Stupid, boring country. It's all God this and Jesus that and it wears on a fellow, if you know what I mean. But his little brother pipes up, "Well, a tiger ate the donkey!"
That isn't the sort of thing that you drop unnoticed among the dirty breakfast dishes.
The boys tell it better, but long story short a jaguar did come down out of the mountains and did bite a big old chunk out of the back leg of their donkey. Authorities were called, the cat caught, and he's now spending his days in a zoo somewhere in Mexico City.
I'm going to have to remember to ask about their year before telling about mine next year.
First liar never stands a chance.

Yeah, and here too possibly disaster --
Both fascists and liberals favor a minimum wage, an expansive social safety net, heavy regulation of industry, and redistributive taxation, but stop short of advocating the abolition of private property. Both scorn constitutional limits on government, indulge in economic populism, and see the working classes as their natural constituencies. Both distrust bourgeois values and traditional religion. On these points and others, Goldberg observes, not only do liberalism and fascism agree, but they reject the ideology of the American conservative movement.~~ Austin W. Bramwell

Hmmm. Must be something in the water over there. On FNC now they whacked some Hamas dude after warning his family to get out! Guess that human shield thing does'nt work out too well when the IAF and IDF have had enough BS from Hamas pukes.
The Palestinians hold themselves hostage!

I just received a very sad call. The older gentleman who was my hubby's hospital "roommate" passed away last night. They were from our town as well, and fellow churchmembers. I had a chat with his wife when I was there last weekend, after she had been given the grim news there was not much hope for his recovery. They lost their daughter two years ago, and his illness was taking a huge emotional toll on her. But her faith (our faith) was (and is) giving her much comfort. Please say a quick prayer for Betty, that she may receive comfort in her grief. Thank you.

I have an 08 Shelby, the excitement wears off after a few weeks and I'm left with $660 monthly payments.
Her is what I have done in the past. Maybe it will work for you too. When you get in that beast and hear those pipes burbling that happy Ford sound, say to yourself: "This why I bust my ass, so I can have toys like this." Then hit the skinny pedal and drive it with a smile.

re: #340 yma o hyd Ah, no, it's just an ineffectual way to get your point across! (ineffectual only cause it doesn't have the POW, BAM effect!) and what can say about the other; he's an Englishman, ain't he?!
:)

Hell. Immunity? Fuck that, that only means that they have done something wrong, even if it's "just" lying to investigators. Hope they don't get immunity, but get what's coming to 'em. BOTH of 'em.

Thank you Hermit. My hubby's is continuing to improve, but not at the pace he would like.

what's the outlook? I mean what are the primary struggles he's facing right now with recovery?

re: #369 hermit
He will fully recover - they had to intubate him on 12/16 - he stopped breathing after being hospitalized with what the docs thought was congestive heart failure. He was on the ventilator and fully sedated for over a week, then they did a tracheotomy on him. He's been completely off the vent during the day for three days now (breathing through the trache collar), which is awesome. The cardiologist in Phx said it was NOT CHF, just COPD complicated by extreme sepsis from a pneumonia. His heart is strong although he has hypertension (he's been on meds for that for years). His current aggravation is the lack of food - he is not physically able to swallow food yet. They do a "swallow test" on him daily. He doesn't understand his recovery will be in baby steps, not giant leaps and bounds. He does not have the temperment for patience unfortunately, especially when he's 200 miles from family and home!

Mimosas sound good. Alas, all the bubbly is gone, so it'll be bloody marys for me. Yesterday, while I was getting ice at the local likka sto', I picked up a bottle of Glenmorangie 10 y.o. as a little New Year gift to myself. Very nice! This was a hair of the dog thread, wasn't it?
A Happy and Healthy New Year to All!
