It's not the most important issue, but it is a relevant one. Creationism is an anti-scientific mindset that, when introduced into the classroom, damages the education of our children. I wish there was a way for Jindal to disassociate himself from the DI crowd but the media will likely not let him do so. He needs to associate with better people.

This could come back to bite Michelle in the butt:
Michelle and friends send the poor packing....
Barack Obama’s wife and three close advisers have been involved with a program at the University of Chicago Medical Center that steers patients who don’t have private insurance — primarily poor, black people — to other health care facilities.
The child's mother alleges that she was pressured for insurance information, and the implication is that her medicaid status contributed to their decision not to perform surgery.
And when she was discharged, she was told to follow up "at Cook County."... When she did (promptly) present at County, the child was operated on. This implies to me (though not conclusively) that this truly was a patient dump, that the University chose not to or did not have the resources to care for the child and just sent them away, hoping that they would become somebody else's problem.

And now something to soothe the inflamed lizards:
The most beautiful Italian madrigal ever composed, by Claudio Montiverdi, sung by a soprano and a countertenor. (Can you tell which is which?) And the visual part doesn't suck, either.
They sing of Spring.
Zefiro torna e di soavi accenti
l'aer fa grato e'il pié discioglie a l'onde
e, mormoranda tra le verdi fronde,
fa danzar al bel suon su'l prato i fiori.Inghirlandato il crin Fillide e Clori
note temprando lor care e gioconde
come vuol mia ventura, hor piango hor canto.
I found a truly lousy translation on the web and rewrote it (no line left untouched!):
Zephyr returns, and with gentle breath
Makes sweet the air and sweeps the grass in waves,
And soughing through green branches
The flowering field makes dance to his clean note.Wreathed is the hair of Phyllis and Chloe,
And notes alight with love and joy
From mountains high and valleys deep
In sounding caves echo in tune.
Dawn soars glad in the sky and the sun
Flings rays of gold and purest silver,
Like signs on the azure cloak of Thetis. But I, in woods alone and lost,
The love of two sweet eyes my scourge,
As my Fate wills it - I now weep, now sing.
Salvete et bonam noctem, lacerti.
--Cato Maior

The majority of people do want a say in what their children are being taught. That's a bigger issue to people than evolution vs. creationism.

Obama was about what I expected: he was trying to put lipstick on the pig.
Jindal, however, was a disappointment. I have seen Jindal in action (I live in Baton Rouge) and that was not the Jindal I know. He was wooden, tense and uptight. Not a good first showing. Maybe the Left will take that for the real Bobby and underestimate him in 2012.
As for Jindal's views in creationism/intelligent design, they bother me less than Obama's views on protecting this country and who controls my health care choices.

Never thought I'd see the day when conservative Americans might contemplate heading to Canada. You got room for 56 million more up there? We'll bring some extra beer and back bacon!
If every conservative American moved to BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, would we be a big enough demographic bulge to cancel out the votes of the liberals in Ontario and the Quebecois and tilt Canadian politics rightward for the next 100 years?
Think about it. Canada could rule the world, eh.

Not in the stimulus bill, certainly.
Is that going to create new jobs here in America? Is it going to strengthen our economy or is it an item that should be addressed in the regular budget and no doubt will be addressed to the tune of another 150 million or so?

From the bill:
For an additional amount for ‘‘Surveys, Investigations, and Research’’, $140,000,000, for repair, construction and restoration of facilities; equipment replacement and upgrades including stream
gages, and seismic and volcano monitoring systems; national map activities; and other critical deferred maintenance and improvement
projects.
While it would not have been my priority to see such a thing put into a "stimulus" bill, yes, that amount of money will employ some people (@$100,000/staff yr it would come to 1400 staff years.)
I guess my point is this... why did Jindal, already under the gun for his anti-modern views (at least wrt science), decide to pick on what many people would otherwise consider a worthy government (scientific) effort?

Oh, goody... more government workers. Just what we need at the expense of the private sector.
As for the anti-science charges, how many people realize that stupid "academic freedom" crap passed on a 94-3 vote in the house and a 35-0 vote in the Senate? Jindal probably should have vetoed it but the legislature would have immediately overruled him and that would put him in a weakened position. This is politics, remember? We have people here claiming he's an ignorant backwater YEC, a claim for which I can find no supporting evidence. Perhaps people from other parts of the country don't understand he is a Southern Governor. That's a whole different animal and you do NOT get to win as a republican by telling people who don't understand the theory of evolution that theyr'e stupid, backward hicks. That's the reality he operates under.

Is there an existing volcano monitoring business that now will be put out of business because of government monitoring? Or perhaps you think that volcano monitoring is not a worthy thing to do?

Yes, Jindal is the lead piper among a band playing the same tune... understand that. Yet, it would have been a mark of forward thinking (and leadership) if he had chosen to confront his own political environment with the physical reality of the science, as well as the judicial reality of the inevitable challenge to the law once someone tries to sneak in creationist educational material into their local class curriculum under the banner of "critical thinking."

Then you are attempting to do the consistent libertarian approach to society?
Back in college several of my friends were die-hard libertarians and discusses such issues as whether government should be involved in roads, sewers, etc.
I maintain that the reason government (at various levels) are involved in these activities is because life simply works better that way. We (humans) have millennia of human experimentation with governance, and it does seem that the winning design is one in which collective responsibility is exercised along with (not in place of) individual responsibility.

re: #137 freetoken
Well, I'm mostly advocating for the acknowledgement of certain truths about the nature of government, rather than calling for roads, sewers, the USGS, etc. to be privatized. Not that I wouldn't like for those things to happen; I just haven't spent time analyzing the possibilities.
I agree that there are certain situations for which the government is best suited (private security forces can certainly accomplish some things more efficiently than the US military, but there are very good reasons why the public would find this unacceptable). However, I think the reason that the government is involved in most of its activities is the simple fact that citizens haven't made themselves aware of the consequences of and alternatives to government involvement.
