But wait! There’s more!
Only The Taggart Building Will Be Spared
One of the images I remember form reading Atlas Shrugged was of darkened skyscrapers, as the government forced the closure of the upper stories of buildings to save energy. Only building owners with political pull were excepted. It seems San Francisco is following a similar plan:
Turn the lights out — or pay.
That’s the message of legislation being revived by Board of Supervisors President David Chiu, who will introduce a measure Tuesday mandating that skyscrapers turn off all nonemergency lights at night as a way to save energy. The introduction comes just days before Earth Hour Saturday, in which people are urged to turn off their lights for an hour at 8 p.m.
The legislation is essentially a new run at a law introduced a year ago by former board president Aaron Peskin that ultimately withered after strong opposition by the Building Owners and Managers Association of San Francisco. (We couldn’t reach them by press time Monday). Peskin’s proposal mandated building owners turn the lights out, or face administrative fines, but it was criticized as difficult to enforce. Chiu actually pushed Peskin to introduce that legislation, he said.
I would have assumed that if electricity consumption were really so high and so useless, that building owners would have had sufficient reason on their own to turn lights off. After all, isn’t it already turn the lights out or pay? Unless of course electricity is free in SF.
One problem poorly understood by academics and government officials is that many folks outside of government actually work longer than a 9-4 work day. As it happens, I am in my office tonight, likely until midnight, catching up on some things I could not with the phone ringing off the hook all day. The only time I have ever occupied prime downtown real estate in an office tower was when I consulted with McKinsey & Co., and I can say for sure that there was seldom if ever a night when there weren’t people in the office working well past midnight (unfortunately, I was often one of them, which explains why my consulting career outlasted the birth of my first kid by only as long as it took me to find a new job).
Postscript: There is an incentive mis-match at work here in most leases. Few commercial leases include individual metering for utilities, since most buildings are not set up for it (it would actually be moderately hard, since office space is often reconfigured over time, shifting from one suite to another). As a result, there is a kind of tragedy of the commons where renters pay their share of average use for all occupants, diluting the effect of their own usage on their own bills. I am not sure how fining building owners when their tenants work late is going to help, though.
At the end of the day, this is all micro-managed bullsh*t. If you want less electricity usage, raise rates, and let individuals figure out how to get the savings. Just because a particular use (eg night lights in skyscrapers) is the most visible to policy makers does not make it the marginal use or the low hanging fruit for energy savings.

re: #38 Gus 802
Are they? I saw something about banning black cars yesterday. In California.
The purported black car ban was said to be part of the “cool cars” initiative being cooked up by the air board, which is looking for ways to follow the legislature’s mandate to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in California. Greenhouse gases are a cause of global warming, and automotive tailpipe emissions are a major source.
One solution: lower the temperature inside parked cars, thereby reducing the amount of air conditioning — and engine power and gasoline — needed to keep the occupants cool and comfortable.
CARB looked at two possible ways to achieve this: mandating the use of reflective paints that reduce the amount of solar heat absorbed by a vehicle, and requiring manufacturers to install glass with reflective coatings to achieve the same purpose.
When word got out that CARB couldn’t find a reflective version of deep black paint that suited its needs, auto enthusiast blogs and conservative commentators smelled another “kooky California” story — or “out-of-control government” expose, take your pick — and jumped in with relish.

In most modern office buildings the heat from the lights along with the heat from electronics (and humans) is a major factor in calculating the energy needs to heat the building. Heat from these sources substantially reduces the amount of oil and gas needed to heat the building. That’s why most new buildings are almost air-tight.

How much residential electricity in the US comes from burning middle eastern (or any regional origin for that matter) petroleum rather than coal, nuclear, hydroelectric, and natural gas? I could be wrong, but I’d be amazed if its more than a single digit percent. You want to impoverish Saudi Arabia, stop driving and flying.
I just checked, its 1.6% Petroleum. I know natural gas comes from oil deposits but the same DoE site says all our natural gas comes from the United States and Canada. You aren’t funding terrorists by accidentally leaving a light on.

There are plenty of original ideas out there, but the few people with the power to OK movies keep turning them down.

I’d like to see Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison and Ringolevio by Emmett Grogan made into movies.
Knowing Hollywood, they probably couldn’t resist the urge to make him actually invisible, and destroying the whole point of a truly great book.

‘Rio Bravo,’ Still Popular and Hip at 50
It wasn’t nominated for any Academy Awards. It was scarcely taken seriously by the critics on its release, and it’s never made into the American Film Institute’s top 100. But Howard Hawks’s “Rio Bravo,” which had its premiere half a century ago this month, may be the most popular cult film ever made.
The phrase “cult favorite” conjures up images of wobbly hand-held camera shots and little-known actors. But “Rio Bravo” was shot in glorious Technicolor and starred perhaps the most popular star in movie history. Most cult films are too hip to be popular, and most big hits are too popular to be hip. But “Rio Bravo” is that rarest of films — both popular and hip.

He plays a lonely architectural intern with a large collection of eccentric comic books and accordion music and a recently divorced just out of the closet father.

Think there are a number of great books for Hollywood to adapt, so that’s not my issue. It just seems that all they really have these days book adaptations, sequels, franchises… There’s a real shortage of originality.
Oh- I also really liked Lost In Translation. Some of these comedy guys are good actors when they opt for more serious roles.

True – they have to hide that as much as possible in the trailer, so people will think they want to see it.

I’m sure in order to be made in Hollywood as we know it, both she and the producers will either:
A) Make it totally over the top as to appear as a parody or critique of capitalism.
or
B) Make it serious but twist the story so that it is actually pro-socialist.
I really cannot see anything remotely pro-capitalist, no less so virulently as anything written by Ayn Rand passing the Commiewood litmus test as is.

That is, the 7-letter sequence that is common to the first pair does not match the 7-letter sequence of the second pair.

Jihad rockets to be rendered impotent soon:
Israel: ‘Iron Dome’ rocket shield test a success
JERUSALEM (CNN) — Israel says it has successfully tested an anti-rocket system developed to protect the country from short-range rocket and artillery attack from Lebanon and Gaza, defense officials said.
Rockets, of the type fired in recent years at Israel, were launched to test the system. The Iron Dome system responded “successfully and in accordance with the objectives of the experiment,” the defense ministry said.
Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said: “Developing a multi-layered defense system against rockets is a national mission aimed at reaching the stage in which a vast majority of the missiles do not reach their targets.”
I wonder how long it’ll be before other countries use this technology? It might be a few years off but I definitely see rockets coming out of places like Malmo and the Paris suburbs.

There are 3 US President’s names among the signers of the United States Declaration of Independence:
Thomas Jefferson
John Adams
Benjamin Harrison
The Benjamin Harrison who signed the Constitution never became president, but his great grandson, also named Benjamin Harrison did become a US president!
For that matter, his son, William Henry Harrison, also became US president (but only for 30 days).

Great article! It’s about time one makes it out there. I used to work at a wind farm and it’s true. Every turbine has a gas/combustion engine aboard. Our “windsmiths” were hired based on their ability to be able to tune-up a car.
Tens of thousands of acres of land were defaced with these turbins and all the power we “produced” and “sold” to PG&E only helped to moderately subsidize a moderately small city.
I initially loved the idea and found it a great waste of time and resources.

All those folks at AIG who were “stalked” (for want of a better word) were stalked by folks from the Democratic Party which is “the party of the poor and downtrodden” and is definitely Left wing and yet there are more millionaires and multi-millionaires in Congress from the Democratic Party than from the Republican party.
So it’s sorta the rich telling the poor to “Sic those dirty bastids” for daring to take a $300,000 bonus and then flying off to Vail or Aspen in their private planes to let the unwashed masses do their dirty work for ‘em.

A little tid-bit of information I’ve learned about Ward that I did not know previously: If Ward Churchill gets a speeding ticket, he looks at the dollar amount he owes on the ticket and then plans to destroy that same amount of public property.

This probably left over from a Bush policy. Obama has stated he wishes this to be the way things are handled. To “save money” of all things. Just like Clinton, the only time he will cut government spending is when it is for the DoD.

To summarise, initially compelling pictures whose character depends on a single year’s worth of data and only if you use a very specific dataset are unlikely to be robust or provide much guidance for future projections. Instead, this methodology tells us a) that 2008 was relatively cool compared to recent years and b) short term trends don’t tell you very much about longer term ones. Both things we knew already.

He went to a VA hospital as I remember the story, and they blow him off. Later as his condition worsened, he went to a non-VA facility and that is were the bill was from. Your right, it is outrages, but anytime anything deviates from the norm, this is how the Gov. reacts usually. But at least in this case, all’s well that end’s well. The VA did finally pick up the tab.

Morning all! I just received my 25 question email from the GOP - where do I stand on certain issues and what do I want the Republicans to do in response to various proposals/policies the Democrats are pushing. Then they left a block for comments. This was the best I could do before a full cup of coffee:
Clean out the Party! Get rid of members who insist on ‘bipartisanship’ - the Democrats do not reciprocate; they’re looking for ‘cover’ for the destructive policies they’re trying to jam through Congress, get rid of members who are RINOS, and members who insist on alienating Independents by pushing busybodiness (a personal life should be just that) and pushing religion (Intelligent Design) in schools (yes, that means Jindal). Apologize for the wasteful spending the GOP engaged in, chastise those members who have, and return to the Republican core message of small federal government and strong state governments, low taxes, personal liberty, the Constitution, American sovereignty, and strong defense. Go view the Ronald Reagan campaign ads for ‘The Bear’ and ‘Morning in America’. 40 years of socialist BS in our schools have produced a people with no understanding of what this country was/should be - find someone who can articulate that in easily understandable sound bites. And find your own Soros - there must be someone in this country that hasn’t lost half of their savings/investments that can fund a message campaign. I’m not even registered as a Republican, but I did donate time and money to McCain’s campaign; and at the polls my choice these days seems to be between the DemocratLite party and the Marxist Party. I pull the lever for you, but I’m not happy doing it.
I’ll follow this up with a letter when I’ve had time to clear the cobwebs from my brain.

re: #591 Nevergiveup
I generally speaking like Ralph Peters. Smart guy, really, but he’s WRONG when he says
Imagine how different the situation would be if we weren’t Pakistan’s strategic prisoner and didn’t stand between Islamabad and Delhi. What if the Pakistanis had to behave responsibly and stop sponsoring terror attacks against India — or face India’s wrath? Nuclear war? Pakistan would vanish, India would lick its wounds. And the Pakistanis know it.
See the thing that Obama and Peters apparently forget is that Pakistan ALSO has nuclear weapons and a missile system said to be able to carry nuke warheads to every part of India. That’s the reason India didn’t go after Pakistan after Mumbai - no other reason, certainly not any “diplomatic” efforts by the US stopped them.
And I also agree with Peters, that this isn’t a case of keeping the Taliban from taking “x” village - it IS however a case of not allowing the Taliban to take any villages (and hold them for any length of time) in Afghanistan.
Let’s not forget that it was blind sheik Omar who told Bush that yes bin Laden was in Afghanistan and no, Afghanistan wouldn’t turn him over to the US and if the US didn’t like it, the US could go pound sand.
Anyone know where Sheik Omar is today?!
Bueller?
We do not need to “control” Afghanistan, we just need to ensure that the Taliban don’t, either.

You may have a point re: India, where the population far exceeds the infrastructure. But Singapore and Thailand are exceptional
In India, even where they provide the Infrastructure it has problems.
The southeastern state of Andhra Pradesh is a good example. Earlier this decade, the state government helped build 2.95 million household latrines in rural areas. Residents got subsidies worth about $16 in cash plus coupons for 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of rice. Half the toilets went unused or were being used for other purposes, a February 2007 World Bank report found.

Hi Real, I don’t think that he is. In an interview he said that he had no interest in going anywhere but that he would listen to Providence.
As a young coach he took them to the Final Four. He’s not going anywhere.
This all started with me saying that I hope he stays. He stays.

I haven’t been to Thailand since the mid 80’s. Bangkok was really modern compared to Delhi. We used to go there for medical/dental care too but I still don’t know if I’d trust it today.
The times I saw Dehli and Calcutta, all I wanted to do is get out of there, the cities were so gross. I hear Mumbai is quite modern, but I don’t have a hankering to visit.

Karzai wants Taliban removed from UN blacklist
Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Saturday called on the United Nations to remove from its blacklist the names of Taliban leaders who are not part of Al-Qaeda, as a first step towards peace talks.Karzai hailed Washington’s new strategy for the “war on terror” in Afghanistan and Pakistan, including its mention of reconciliation with certain militants.
“While we are speaking about the peace process with the Taliban, we must also make sure to provide the right environment for such a peace process,” Karzai told reporters.“Right environment means first of all looking at the list that is with the United Nations and removing names that are not part of Al-Qaeda, that are not part of the terrorist networks,” he said.
“Those names must be removed from the list.”
Karzai however dodged questions about whether he wanted the fugitive Taliban supreme leader, Mullah Mohammad Omar, among those scratched from the list.

Judd Gregg continues to open his can of whoopass on the One
[Link: www.foxnews.com…]
Gregg, who was offered the job of Obama’s commerce secretary but withdrew his name, has become one of the toughest critics of Obama’s handling of the economy.
“In the next five years, President Obama’s budget will double the national debt; in the next 10 years, it will triple the national debt,” the New Hampshire Republican said.
“His budget assumes the deficit will average $1 trillion every year for the next 10 years and will add well over $9 trillion in new debts to our children’s backs,” Gregg said. “He also is proposing the largest tax increase in history, much of it aimed at taxing small business people who have been, over the years, the best job creators in our economy.”
Gregg said Obama’s proposals “represent an extraordinary move of our government to the left.”
He said Obama “is not trying to hide this; in fact, he is very forthright in stating that he believes that by greatly expanding the spending, the taxing and the borrowing of our government, this will lead us to prosperity.”
Gregg countered that:
— “It is the individual American who creates prosperity and good jobs, not the government.”
— “We believe that you create energy independence not by sticking Americans with a brand new national sales tax on everyone’s electric bill, but by expanding the production of American energy … while also conserving more.”
—“We also believe you improve everyone’s health care not by nationalizing the health care system and putting the government between you and your doctor, but by assuring that every American has access to quality health insurance and choices in health care.”

We’ll have to see. In Al-Anbar we brought in those that had been against us. But part of that was we convinced them we’d stick around and protect them until security was established.
Part of it is it’s the Afghan way. You fight, you make up, allegiances shift, all based on the the moment and what is best for a particular tribe for at that time.
There are some that go along with the Taliban, because that’s the thing to do at that minute. I hope those are the ones Karzai is talking about, as opposed to the hard core Taliban.

So what, doesn’t Mexico have control of their border?

the five fully identified questioners called on randomly by the president in the East Room were anything but a diverse lot. They included: a member of the pro-Obama Service Employees International Union, a member of the Democratic National Committee who campaigned for Obama among Hispanics during the primary; a former Democratic candidate for Virginia state delegate who endorsed Obama last fall in an op-ed in the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star; and a Virginia businessman who was a donor to Obama’s campaign in 2008.

You don’t say. Obama town hall questioners were supporters.
Really? I wouldn’t have guessed. Of course they were potted plants in the studio audience. Why would the Administration expose Obama to another potential Joe the Plumber who might ask truly uncomfortable questions of Obama’s clueless grasp of the economy (at best) or push to socialize wide swaths of the economy (the more sinister view). Obama’s handlers know better.
President Obama has promised to change the way the government does business, but in at least one respect he is taking a page from the Bush playbook, stocking his town hall Thursday with supporters whose soft — though far from planted — questions provided openings to discuss his preferred message of the day.
How’s that for some hard hitting journalism?
- Bush did it too
- The questions weren’t planted
Blame the other guy and also editorialize in defense of Obama not getting planted questions.
Fuck the media. They are the enemy.

Reid basically threw Yucca Mt under the bus, but because there are jobs to be had, has allowed a trickle of funding to continue because his constituents are screaming for jobs - basically because Obama has killed the Vegas convention business with his utterances. Even if they get Yucca Mt., it’s anything but a done deal because of so much local opposition to building new plants in their backyard.
It’s okay when it’s far away and someone else has it in their backyard, but they oppose it when it’s in theirs. Then, there’s the whole issue of distribution, when the NIMBY opposed their construction as well.

Obama:

Make energy costs soar.
If you look at the dollars and cents part of what is being proposed, they are making energy from coal and oil and gas more expensive than ‘alternatives’ like wind and solar. In addition to costing us all a bundle, the infrastructure for these is not there and won’t be enough to pick up the slack. In the meantime, China has even greater coal reserves than the US and will use it. Therefore, the CO2 emitted just moves from the US to China and all we get our more taxes. Of course, the media and the left won’t tell us this.

Coal is carbon, burning it produces CO2, if CO2 is bad coal is SOL.
If you have to bury all the CO2 you can’t do it economically. Maybe somebody can come up with a coal plus water plus power produces more power plus gasified coal for use as gasoline, that would appease all parties. Better living through chemistry.

We have the same problem here.
Certain people are pushing wind power for all its worth.
Well - during the past winter, when people would have needed wind-powered electricity for heating their homes (because its so clean and renewable!), everybody would have frozen to death, because the was no wind to speak of!
What also gets me is that the one group pushes wind power - and the other bemoans the death of birds due to these turbines. Yet another is campaigning against them because they destroy our most beautiful landscapes.
The one and best solution are new generation nuclear power stations - but nobody talks about that!
Well - the French are running them, and have no problems, so why can’t we?

Hi VioletTiger - absolutely spot on post. Mind you I’m NOT against “alternative fuels” like wind and solar, it’s just that they aren’t there YET. And of course may never be. Nuclear power is there but he solar/wind/cow flatulence folks won’t let us use it, even though more than 75% of electricity in France is generated by nuclear power.
And candidly, if the concerns about the climate were real, folks would be ALL OVER China (and Russia) but the country they hammer at the most is the U.S.
Screw ‘em (h/t Markos Kos).

Nuclear power is certainly a good way to go for electric. The wait time for parts for the newer wind turbines is very long and nobody want to see them. It is not a global solution, but it works in some situations. There is a nut in my neighborhood who put one up. He is not a popular fellow and even he has admitted that he will probably never get a return on his investment.
