Shocka! Obama’s Gaffes Noticed by Mainstream Media

Politics • Views: 5,167

Experts say Obama needs to watch the gaffes.

Ya think?

Instant Internet communication and an explosion in political commentary are magnifying President Obama’s gaffes and administration missteps, and could erode his popularity faster than that of other presidents, say experts from both left and right.

Intense scrutiny and rookie mistakes by an understaffed administration combine to draw attention faster to Obama’s stumbles.

Last week was notable for budget battles and a new Afghanistan strategy, rather than for headline-hogging gaffes, although the president didn’t escape a few media jeers for his reliance on a giant TV screen in place of his trademark teleprompter to feed him his lines at Tuesday’s primetime press conference.

His careful responses to reporters’ questions, in an appearance that many commentators branded as boring, didn’t wander into such hot-button territory as he found himself in the previous week when he told Jay Leno on “The Tonight Show” that his bowling skills were akin to those of the Special Olympics.

Obama swiftly apologized for the line, with many of those condemning the quip adding the caveat that they didn’t think Obama spoke out of meanness toward the disabled.

Right. And I’m sure they would have given the same benefit of the doubt to George W. Bush, if he had been as boorish as Obama.

Yes, it was a stupid thing to say. Yes, the media has certainly had way too much Obama worship. I fully understand the point about the liberal media being hypocritical about usually being the first to cry crocodile tears for any victim group they can find, yet giving O a pass.

That said, I would love to see a culture where not everyone would be instantly ready to take offense at everything. I would love it if the news just let stupid lines pass a bit more and talked about real news.

'New York Times' Spiked Obama Donor Story

A lawyer involved with legal action against Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) told a House Judiciary subcommittee on March 19 The New York Times had killed a story in October that would have shown a close link between ACORN, Project Vote and the Obama campaign because it would have been a “a game changer.”

Heather Heidelbaugh, who represented the Pennsylvania Republican State Committee in the lawsuit against the group, recounted for the ommittee what she had been told by a former ACORN worker who had worked in the group’s Washington, D.C. office. The former worker, Anita Moncrief, told Ms. Heidelbaugh last October, during the state committee’s litigation against ACORN, she had been a “confidential informant for several months to The New York Times reporter, Stephanie Strom.”

Ms. Moncrief had been providing Ms. Strom with information about ACORN’s election activities. Ms. Strom had written several stories based on information Ms. Moncrief had given her.

During her testimony, Ms. Heidelbaugh said Ms. Moncrief had told her The New York Times articles stopped when she revealed that the Obama presidential campaign had sent its maxed-out donor list to ACORN’s Washington, D.C. office.

Ms. Moncrief told Ms. Heidelbaugh the campaign had asked her and her boss to “reach out to the maxed-out donors and solicit donations from them for Get Out the Vote efforts to be run by ACORN.”

Ms. Heidelbaugh then told the congressional panel:

“Upon learning this information and receiving the list of donors from the Obama campaign, Ms. Strom reported to Ms. Moncrief that her editors at The New York Times wanted her to kill the story because, and I quote, “it was a game changer.”’

Ms. Moncrief made her first overture to Ms. Heidelbaugh after The New York Times allegedly spiked the story — on Oct. 21, 2008. Last fall, she testified under oath about what she had learned about ACORN from her years in its Washington, D.C. office. Although she was present at the congressional hearing, she did not testify.

U.S. Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wisc., the ranking Republican on the committee, said the interactions between the Obama campaign and ACORN, as described by Ms. Moncrief, and attested to before the committee by Ms. Heidelbaugh, could possibly violate federal election law, and “ACORN has a pattern of getting in trouble for violating federal election laws.”

So the Obama campaign was directly involved in possible federal election law violations with an organization known for voter fraud and other crimes.

/gee, that would have been nice to know before the election

Well, at least some on the left are honest about their double standard re: President Obama vs. President Bush.

When Obama made that boo-boo about the Special Olympics, the lefties could say to themselves, "A harmless gaffe by an otherwise wonderful person."

But if Bush had made such a comment, they would have said, "A horrifying, typical gaffe by a bad person."

It may not be fair, but if you honestly believe that one man is better than the other (and I suspect there are many here who do), then fairness has nothing to do with it.

Black and female conservatives don't fit the liberal narrative. I find it appalling, and the ultimate racist view - because of your color or gender you should think a certain way. But then again libs are the most racist. If Obama was a white liberal he would have gotten better treatment than McCain for sure but nothing like the free pass he got. If he was a black conservative he would have gotten the Palin treatment.

I agree with this. The gaffes are an instant hit with the opposition and take our eyes right off the ball. And at the same time it allows the left to blame dropping poll numbers on anything but the real cause. If the "watch the gaffes" meme goes national you can bet there's something else going on that we're not supposed to notice.

Its a very good tactic. Set up the other side to think your main effort is at point A, so they don't see the strike on point B coming. The key to countering that tactic is good intel: watching for the preparation the other side is trying to hide and then positioning your own forces accordingly. Its not foolproof, but we here keep our eyes open enough to give us a good chance.

Isn't it weird how that works? Where I live and work, which is in a very blue state, people often spontaneously start launching into angry non sequitur diatribes about how evil Republicans are, even in the middle of a conversation about, say, the NCAA basketball tournament, or what aisle breakfast cereals are on. And on those rare occasions when I respond by mentioning that I don't share their beliefs and I don't see what the evil of Republicans has to do with where the breakfast cereal is, they say that I'm the strange one.

Is this kind of weird behavior limited to the left? Or does the opposite thing happen somewhere? I.e. if I were to walk into a grocery store in, I don't know, rural Alabama, and ask where the cereal is, would the clerk say "it's on aisle 5, assuming that evil commie secret Muslim bastard Obama hasn't come through with his armed band of secret national service corps stormtroopers and stolen it yet."

And now we know your side of it. I have been posting there as I do here, as someone with conservative values who is deeply opposed to 0bama's policies. I have been polite and direct, and I have never had a post removed ...in fact, I find that there are many there that agree with my points -- and they are tolerated without a problem.

I was polite as well. I find a few like minded posters like Belle Star, Samaguchi, and Concerned in OH but especially during the election, that site was Kool Aid Mountain as far as I was concerned. Lately it has mellowed some, and I say that with reluctance.

I live in a blue state. We don't talk politics much at all at work, but it has happened a couple of times to me with the same guy at work - a friend. I just remind him I don't agree and he goes "you don't? I thought you did!"(he always forgets) - and I suggest we drop it at that, and we go on.

Once, on a trip to NYC with a bunch of people from work, on the way into the Lincoln Tunnel, of all places, the bus driver launches into a huge slam on Republicans - really embarrassing. We gave her a pass, since we would be stuck in NYC if she didn't come back for us. Plus, she knew where all the clean, open to the public restrooms were.

I keep a lot of plants around the house but it's tough to keep them alive indoors. Lot's of watering and root problems. I's still experimenting but here's my best set up so far; 5 gallon bucket with lid ($5-$7). A Nebulizer ($20-30). The cost of a dozen or so plastic mesh baskets is a few bucks. Drill holes for the baskets, rinse all the soil of the roots of you plants but 'em in the baskets. Put about a a gallon of water in your bucket with the fogger. You might have to clean it out and change the water every month or two. Pretty easy and no more watering.

Cut and paste:
"This fallacy involves the attempt to justify a wrong action by pointing to another wrong action. Often, the other wrong action is of the same type or committed by the accuser, in which case it is the subfallacy Tu Quoque. Attempting to justify committing a wrong on the grounds that someone else is guilty of another wrong is clearly a Red Herring, because if this form of argument were cogent, one could justify anything―always assuming that there is another wrong to point to, which is a very safe assumption."

You know, I was going to take a non-LGF night so I could get some sleep, but I had to comment. I consider myself a moderate center-right person. I have to say that even if I find a few faults here at LGF it is the most intelligently moderated blog that I've come across. And the commenters here are equally up to the task of intelligent, civil discourse.

A few months ago I was even roundly slapped around by Charles and a few other lizards, but I realized afterwards I at least partially deserved censure. As a staunch independent and libertarian thinker, and as a person who loathes the idea that this forum is a personality cult and group-think lovefest for Charles Johnson, I gotta say that it passes the smell test for me. I would not kiss Charles's ass more than any average Joe, but I think he has created a technically beautiful and philosophically restrained website. LGF is a fair public forum, and the commenters make me feel as though I still have a country.

My two cents this evening, which I hope you are all enjoying in your safe happy homes!

The Sunday afternoon Quickie!

The only way to pull off a Sunday afternoon quickie with their 8 year-old son in the apartment was to send him out on the balcony with a lollipop and tell him to report on all the neighbourhood activities.

He began his commentary as his parents put their plan into operation:

'There's a car being towed from the parking lot', he shouted.

'An ambulance just drove by.'

'Looks like the Anderson 's have company', he called out.

'Matt's riding a new bike....'

'Looks like the Sanders are moving'

'Jason is on his skate board....'

After a few moments he announced, 'The Coopers are having sex!'

Startled, his Mother and Dad shot up in bed! Dad cautiously called out,

'How do you know they are having sex?'

'Jimmy Cooper is standing on his balcony with a lollipop.'

That wasn't a gaffe. That was a joke on purpose. RR was trying to get a few laughs, its just that he didn't know he was being taped. The words didn't just "sneak out" like the Special Olympics comment from Obama did. Unless you think maybe in the middle of the interview Obama forgot he was being taped.

I blame Letterman. He is the world's worst interviewer, worse even than Larry King. Every interview Letterman ever did, the object has been, how can I grab the spotlight from this loser that I have to share the stage with. Problem is, that was the same thought going through Obama's mind at the time. He tried to outjoke Letterman.

re: #25 jaunte

"Watch the birdie..."

BINGO. Never mind the substantive things, look at the gaffes.

It's exactly what they did with Billy Jeff. "The Right hates that Clinton had sex in the Oval Office," but nevermind the bags of cash from China, Filegate, Whitewater. It was all about sex. Sure. The FMSM is a conman, and, EVIDENTLY, America is a mark.

Charles, the MSM is not "noticing" his gaffes, all of a sudden. They are using them to effectively distract the American TV-watching public from his disastrous policies. These gaffes are a godsend to the MSM right now, and just what they and Obama needed.

re: #20 Sharmuta

They agree with the policies, so they're providing cover for them and floating the balloon that it's his gaffes that are hurting him. While I find ripping his gaffes to be enjoyable, the real issue is his policy. The msm is once again trying to provide cover.

We are being set up.

I certainly ain't Avanti, but...

"We begin bombing in five minutes."

And that's the only one I know of.

Reagan said this as a microphone check before a radio interview. It wasn't broadcast. In that context, I actually think it's actually rather funny, and doesn't qualify as a "gaffe." But a lot of people describe it that way.

Reagan also reported that trees caused more pollution than cars.

As I recall, he told Simon Wiesenthal that he'd participated in the liberation of the death camps in Europe.

In 1985 he remarked that South African had 'eliminated racial segregation'.

Reagan would say damn near anything that came into his head. He was a brilliant politician, but his weird comments remain the stuff of legend.

They put aside any reservations about Obama in order to just get a black guy elected and the whole "historic moment" crap. But I also knew of Caucasian democrats who disliked Obama yet voted for him because he was a Democrat. Then there was a I think 60 minutes interveiw where Michelle Obama said the blacks against Obama would "come to their senses". Sometimes I pay better attention to negative posts (unless I'm pissed off; not a rare condition for me), than I do easy "me, too" posts, although I do appreciate that there are other people who hold my opinions up, and even learn from them (anyone who has ever been a teacher knows the satisfaction whe they succeed in getting the point across,.

My pills are kicking in now. So I'm off while I'm semisober :-)

I have learned a hell of a lot from your posts, for the record.

I just dropped in here during the last few comments. Are we going to have a fight, or something?

Sure fights are fun, here we go. I think liberals buy Apple computers, conservatives prefer PC's. If I'm right, why am I using a PC ? :) Or are Apples the conservatives computer ?

That one really pissed me off. Cindy McCain has more class, patriotism and compassion for others in her little toe than Michelle Obama has in her entire body.

re: #359 avanti

Look, I voted for Reagan, but he was not a supernatural being, he made verbal gaffes like a regular human being on occasion. If you think Reagan never slipped up, it's you that has the Messiah complex.
The MSM jumped on him too. He said some nice words of the graves of SS soldiers for example, but it was his staffs fault for not telling him. Do a google search and you find a few gaffes, and lots of just funny quips.

Obama should be compared to the Bush standard not the Reagan standard. There should be multiple O-Gaffe sites running and T-Shirts. Obama's special Olympics gaffe was pretty bad. It shows he has no exposure to the depth of society he needs to help. Challenged children would love a President Palin who exhibits some compassion. Pres Obama is still stuck in a selfish past.

re: #387 avanti

Nope, I'm saying all Presidents make gaffes, it's up to you to decide how important they are to you. I don't "approve" of Presidential gaffes, but I accept we'll hear them.

Acceptance was a word that didn't exist in the Media when GWB misspoke. That is the standard. It's disingenuous to toss it out when your man makes office.

Magical, I tell you!

We are fighting with the computer, and so far it has a higher score than I do. NY Grampa actually knows what he is doing, unlike me.

How are you doing?

I am doing very well ....my cane begonias are in full bloom ...they make me happy. My staghorn fern is putting out new soft, fuzzy, silvery fronds to beat the band ...it is nearly five feet diameter this spring!

Where do you live to have begonias blooming already? I've only got crocus, hellebore, wintersweet, and a handful of narcissist in bloom.

re: #453 stevieray

Everything stays outside this winter, stevieray. I had to cover things 2-3 times, but lost nothing. That accounts for the early blooms.

That would explain it. It must be nice to have greenery year 'round. It gets kinda bleak up here in the NE... winters last too long! But it is extra nice when those first shoots break through the mulch.

459 Pupdawg  Tue, Mar 31, 2009 5:57:13am

The pattern of the MSM, the Matrix is becoming clearer as it pertains to reporting on anything Barack. His gaffes or a gaffe may get reported by the Matrix but they are quick to defend their chosen One with convenient enabling excuses followed by the implied infamous words or Officer Bar Brady of South Park, 'move along Lookie Lou, nothing to see here'...because the reader should ultimately be influenced convincingly by the Matrix, the MSM that, from a few lines of 'Hamburger Hill', 'brother, it down mean nothing, it don't mean a thing, it don't mean nothing, not a thing, not a thing!'
