Sunday Night Music: Finn Brothers, ‘Only Talking Sense’
From one of my desert island records, Finn Brothers, here are Neil and Tim Finn with a great song and a truly weird video, “Only Talking Sense.”

After some internet sleuthing, I can answer my own question: apparently not. It was engineered and produced by Tchad Blake. The Finn brothers' most recent previous work, Crowded House's Woodface, had been engineered by Blake and produced by Mitchell Froom.

Ha. I worked the ticket counter at the Power Station show in Austin, 1985, but only because I wanted free tickets to see their opening act, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. Sadly, I was stuck in the box office and only got to see a couple of OMD's songs. However it was quite a sight to see the little girls lined up to get in to see the Duran Duran boys very early in the day. The line must have stretched for a hundred or more yards. It was pretty crazy.

I miss Split Enz too, and I miss being the age I was when that song was released. I wish I could go back and do a few things over again in the 80's.
I always thought of the new wave sound of Split Enz as the first musical style embraced by the Finn brothers, but apparently the band originally came together (without Neil Finn) in 1972, as "Split Ends," and their sound in the '70's was more described as "progressive rock" verging into punk.

My most poignant memory of Duran Duran came in the early 80s when my parents actually paid a young man to move far away from me. I flew back to Memphis in a major snit and lived with my cousin for a little while. She was ga-ga for Duran Duran. I mean, GA-GA.

I saw all of those Duran Duran girls. I worked in record stores throughout the 80s in Dallas and Austin and they were absolutely crazy for that band. We had all of the Michael Jackson girls coming in and then Duran Duran and later the Madonna fans. But the Duran Duran girls were really into the band.
However I also worked a record store near an Air Force base in north Texas and the airmen LOVED them some Iron Maiden and Dio.

Okay, you officially have great taste in music!
I saw Frank Black on a solo tour in the early 90s. It was during a downtime in the Pixies and I believe the reason he gave for the tour was that he just bought a bunch of new furniture and had to pay for it somehow. Incidentally, his opening act was a local Dallas boy (since gone on to bigger fame) Rhett Miller playing an acoustic 12-string through an overdriven Marshall amp with a rack of effects.

Genius!

Can't say that I have heard of them. But, since you recommend them, I will look for some of their stuff....thanks!
Just keep in mind that they do not sound like Sonic Youth. They were one of the bands labeled "shoegazers" in the early 90s. But there were pretty popular and The New Year continues to record. The last three albums have been produced by Steve Albini.
Once at Austin's SXSW Husker Du's Bob Mould introduced Bedhead by proclaiming them the greatest band in the world!

The majority DFL in Minnesota has failed to override Pawlenty's vetoes and he promises no special session, as was previously the custom. He'll use his executive powers to back spending back into line. The Bonkeys are whining like stuck pigs, the regular session ends tomorrow and they've wasted months of time, but there will be no tax increases, for better or worse, unlike California, we will live within our current tax base.
/Pawlenty is probably a creationist but I've never heard it brought up or pushed in this State and almost all Minnesotans wouldn't have any idea about that, I'm proud of him for just saying enough is enough

I saw Joan in a park in Coconut Grove, Miami back in the 80s. These guys were getting really grabby with this girl to the point where she couldn't get away from them. They tried lifting in the air and were pulling at her clothes. Joan, who of course could see the whole thing from the stage, just stopped playing and screamed out something like, "Hey! Put her down. If I see any more of that shit, I'm walking off the stage!" And she waited until the girl collected herself. She even asked her if she was ok before the band started again. It was awesome! Off to iron my table.
If liquid is left sitting on a wood table and a white water spot appears and will not come off, what do I do?
Answer: Take a white Cotton t-shirt, place it over the spot --
put your electric iron on medium low setting (do NOT use steam) and iron the spot.
Will remove the white spot.
I found this remedy through googling.

I think that Stephen Wolfram's new project is pretty cool - a massive computational engine that give answers at your fingertips.
Based on the Times story, it is the result of Wolfram having toiled for years and in the process he "built up a number of databases and Wolfram Alpha is an attempt to bring them to a wider audience."
Well I can thank Dr. Wolfram for his diligent building of databases for teaching me a new word tonight - frotteur.

White People Learning to Stand Up and Fight Back Again!
I have asked Stormfront Radio for the opportunity to do a special radio broadcast on the Tea Party effort and the emerging independent implicitly White mass resistance movement.
Any serious White American patriot today needs to orient towards, and intervene into, this Ron Paul/Tax Revolt/Tea Party implicitly White mass resistance.
I would like to see if TPAC (Tea Parties Across America -ed) supporters may be interested in participating in a half hour radio special on the upcoming July 4th Tea Party effort, and on this emerging implicitly White mass resistance.
In the show, I'd like to draw first on the recent history and lessons of this emerging White mass resistance phenomena (starting with the Ron Paul grassroots campaign effort), discuss the kinds of folks at these implicitly White events, and then motivate SF listeners to get prepared to effectively take the field on July 4th at the 600+ Tea Party events happening across the nation.

The tricky problem is that it was a Paulian movement and most of the organizers, both local and national, are Paulians. They don't mind support from racists at Stormfront. Even Glenn Reynolds, the PJ Media representative, is linking to articles from Ron Paul and Lew Rockwell. Unfortunately the lunatics are running the asylum.

It must have been indescribable. What a wonderful man he was. He could have turned his back, as so many did, but he saved so many lives. I wish that there was more said about him earlier on.
The friend who sent the video mentioned that he saved far more lives than Oskar Schindler, who was not the nicest of people, to be kind....and Mr. Sugihara had no ulterior motives, only an innate decency, and caring for people.

I hope that you believe me that I intend only a little levity at the expense of New York City and its fearsome reputation, and certainly not at the the expense of the man or his family. I would like to think that even the family could appreciate a joke like that, if that sheds some light on whether or not I intended to be cruel to anyone.
We had a big loss out here, and humor, even dark, went a lot further than flowers and well-wishes in helping folks to cope and get through. Call it a reflex.
Mileage may vary on humor, but I am absolutely not laughing at the man or his family. I don't expect you to agree or change your mind, but you asked how I could post what I did--the answer is that it was not with any cruelty in mind.

I guess I've been looking at the Tea Party agenda mostly as folks fed up with too much spending. That's how my family members that attended one looked at it. I've been saying since Ross Perot and his graphs that the budget needed to get back on track. Now with the new administration that is determined to spend, spend, and spend some more- a lot of people are worried (me included). I never really looked much below the surface, but aparently there is something there or at least a good opportunity for folks to get in and exploit it.
As far as Malkin, I was reading her blog frequently, now not so much. Not as level headed as the folks here. And I couldn't post there:)

GWB made great progress with Colombia, something never mentioned, ready to throw that away. Ukraine is struggling mightily to make a go of it, we could use a friend in that neighborhood. Taiwan has always had that Sword of Damocles hanging over them, they don't need us sawing on the thread. Look what Israel did to Iraq's nuclear facilities. It is just disgusting that our country is led by a coward. I am honestly not Bibi's biggest fan, but trust him to do what has to be done, irregardless of what the other countries who will gang up on Israel say.
Got to go to sleep! Nearly 2 AM here.

I am in Reno now and spent the weekend in a small town south of here celebrating Armed Forces Day. It was a lot of fun. The only gambling was during my layover at the Lost Wages Airport.
Work with a guy his vacation was to go down and gamble. Took a fixed amount, when it was gone the gambling was over. I've known guys spend more on fishing than he spent on his past time.

I read that the WHO will give it the highest number. There is now swine flu in countries that did not have cases before. I worry for my kids and grandkids.
Try and behave on your vacation! ;)

Heh....you could see this coming when Sound Transit was sub-leasing it's locomotives and commuter coaches to other commuter railways because there just wasn't enough ridership.

Back when they lost the first vote and gerrymander the transit district a lot of where saying hang on to your wallets.

I refuse to panic over it but I bought some Purell at the airport. Got plenty of vitamin D hanging out here in the desert sun, too. My bil, the retired, doc (whose computer I'm on right now) was also concerned about it mutating. That's just what happens often.

Oddly enough, I'd take that light rail line. I went up to Seattle to catch a Mariners/Red Sox game last year- not enought time to make renting a car worthwhile and the bus ride was no fun....

That's the way to do it if it's your thing. I kind of burned out on gambling when I was young and working in a casino myself. I'll still put two or three rolls of quarters into a poker machine on occasion but that's about the extent of it.

Night all, checking...
"They [our Arab Neighbors] in turn have much to give us, they are blessed with what we lack. Great territories, ample for themselves and their children's children, even if they are far more prolific than they are today. We do not covet their expanses nor will we penetrate them - for we shall fight to end Diaspora in Arab lands as fiercely as we fought to end it in Europe, we want to be assembled wholly in our own Land. But if this region is to expand to the full, there must be reciprocity, there can be mutual aid - economic, political and cultural - between Jew and Arab. That is the necessity which will prevail, and the daily fulminations of their leaders should not alarm us unduly - they do not echo the real interests of the Arab peoples.
David Ben Gurion, Speech to the elected assembly of Palestinian Jews, October 2, 1947

I am not panicking either, but all the kids have Purell, and they let the 2 granddaughters take a small bottle to school, but the little guy? My daughter does his hands herself. He has been very good about it, fortunately.
Masks? Not going to do a thing. And there are countries that are working on a vaccine.
I am shutting down! I already smacked my hands to keep from answering..didn't work! Closing down should do it!
Have fun!
