Looking like the article for the trash heap of history that it deserves to be.
However- I think the Wall should have a section remaining, so that we might reflect on the measures man will take to enforce their authoritarian wills upon others.
The Berlin Wall- a piece of trash worthy of critical remembrance.

I had a temp job a few years ago with the Freedom Forum. That's the organization that owns and runs the Newseum in DC. I haven't been to the new Newseum yet, but when I was there they had a section of the wall on display. It was nice to see that.

My son just got back from 4 weeks in Germany. He claimed there were guys hawking pieces of the Berlin wall as souveniers. Small chunks of concrete with spray paint on one face.
And people were buying them.

OT: I had a couple questions about this "surtax" nonsense....
1. It says there's an automatic 5.4% surtax on people making over a million a year. Is it 5.4% PER million? If you're a basketball player making 8 mil a year, it would come out to an automatic tax of 432k?
2. Is this surtax IN ADDITION to the normal % tax rate you would pay?

And he said the legacy of the Jim Crow era is still felt, albeit in different ways today.
"Make no mistake: no mistake: the pain of discrimination is still felt in America," Obama said, by African-American women who are paid less for the same work as white men, by Latinos "made to feel unwelcome," by Muslim Americans "viewed with suspicion" and by "our gay brothers and sisters, still taunted, still attacked, still denied their rights."
That's exactly what this unemployed white veteran wants to hear. A used car salesman who made a name for himself as a 'community organizer' talking about how Jim Crow is alive and well in the USA.

Even if I was not @ Berlin but somewhere else in the GDR as not just the wall came down but also the border between both germanys was opened - the so called death strip (and the name was for real!)
No man's land - we walked for kilometers, (areas near the border where restricted areas, you could not just visit people who live there without permission and the traffic there was restrictet too.
Then there was a border crossing - still with soldiers, who where just watching...on the other side people - greeting us...handing out sweets to the kids...

By the way your "Thank God that wall came down!" is certainly true, but I'd add "Thank Ronald Reagan and George H.W.Bush too!"

OT.
Today was the 20th consecutive day over 100 degrees here in Lubbock (102). This is a record. There was not a single day over 100 in 2006, btw.
This is a serious problem for lower income people because very few rental houses in Lubbock have adequate air conditioning. Landlords think that supplying a 20 year old swamp cooler is more than enough, so long as they can shrug and point out that average humidity here is 40% higher than it was 50 years ago.
Worse, many of the older rental houses have these idiotic WW2 surplus swing-out windows so renters cannot even buy and install their own window units. These windows were made for temporary barracks during World War 2. When the barracks were demolished, Lubbock slum-lords bought up many thousands of them since this is one of the few cities whose fire codes permit the use of small swing-outs in residential applications.
I own a couple of rental houses in California. I would be arrested there if I tried to pull the crap Lubbock slum-lords take for granted.
My house here has good central heat and air, and real windows, but when libertarians bitch about government regulations I need only point to the disgraceful condition of Lubbock rental housing as an example of the need. If you act like a pig, you'll be treated like one.

(AP) — "A Colorado man used his chainsaw to fight off a starving mountain lion that attacked him while he was camping in the Shoshone National Forest. When the lion pounced, Dustin Britton, an ex-Marine from Windsor, Colo., raised the chainsaw he’d been using to cut brush and inflicted a six- to eight-inch gash on the 100 pound lion’s shoulder." This is what I call situational awareness.

OT (except that it is related in a Kafkaesque way):
Barbara Boxer tries to use "diversity" in "science" against a black business leader and gets burned.
The President and CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) tore into Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) Thursday for what he said were "condescending" and "God awful" racial statements at a hearing.NBCC head Harry C. Alford took strong exception to Boxer having referenced an NAACP report favoring climate change legislation during a hearing of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, of which Boxer is the chairwoman.
"Madam chair, that is condescending to me," Alford said. "I'm the National Black Chamber of Commerce, and you're trying to put up some other black group to pit against me."
Boxer defended including the report, however, saying the report reflects a "diversity" of support behind climate change legislation facing the Senate.
"If this gentleman were here, he would be proud he's being quoted," Boxer said in defense of the NAACP support.
Alford, however, struck back against Boxer, accusing her of "getting racial" in the climate change debate.
I hope every Lizard, regardless of opinion on the firmness of different climate claims, can agree that "diversity" in support of a scientific theory has no impact whatsoever on the validity of that theory. Empiricism demands such.
And the claims made by Democrats about politicization of science under Republicans (which carry some truth) have not motivated Democrats to keep from politicizing it themselves, as this event shows in stark relief.

Here is the best quote from that article on Babs Boxer getting called out for "getting racial" on Climate Change:
"We've been looking at energy policy since 1996. And we are referring to the experts, regardless of their color. And for someone to tell me, an African-American, college-education veteran of the United States Army, that I must contend with some other "black group" and put aside everything else in here — This has NOTHING to do with the NAACP, and really has nothing to do with the National Black Chamber of Commerce. We're talking about energy. And that — that road the chair went down, I think is God awful."

Genuine Stasi files turn up at film set
BERLIN (Reuters) - Secret files of Communist East Germany's Stasi security police were sent to a film set for use as props, triggering an investigation into how such sensitive documents were obtained.
The authenticity of the files were revealed when 15 former political prisoners were being filmed for a docu-play called "Staats-Sicherheit" (State Security) by public broadcaster ZDF.
"It's just unbelievable that something like this could happen," CDU politician and former East German civil rights activist Vera Lengsfeld told Reuters. "This must be cleared up right away."
One of the "prop" files was actually the genuine file of one of the actors.
The German government's agency that looks after the Stasi archives said they had began a probe into how the files were obtained without authorization.

No I have no own blog. And these things happened 20 years ago.
It is difficult to describe. I would need to use and explain so many German esp. East German words and circumstances ...it would end in a book, and I am sure there are books written about it.
Surreal is the word I would use for the situation at all.
First there where all these demonstrations...mostly peaceful...with candles...than these occupations of the West German embassy in Hungary, special trains crossing the territory of the GDR with these occupiers who got granted asylum, than the Berlin wall came down...but that does not mean everything is ok...than thousands of people applied for visa...and then some days later, after a simple question to a minister live on TV if and when the border crossings are open - he just said that as far as he knows this is applied right now.
And than it was just a rush. To the cars...to the restricted area...and then walking to the border...hundreds no thousands of people walking...crossing these death strip...getting greeted on the other side by some West Germans...invading the small towns on the western side near the border...buying some stuff (bananas...chocolate) there and than just walking back home.
Some stayed, fearing the boarders get closed again.
Its was really strange. I have to sleep about it and its time do to this - night shift is over - it's 7 am.

I have actually walked along this section of the wall. It is also not the only section that is left. There is a long piece that runs near the Spree River that they allow artists to paint, and there is another restored section that has both the inner and outer wall left.
You can also buy postcards with a plastic container attached to them that has a small fragment of the wall. And at various places you can see wall monuments. Such as a section that was moved to the american military base near the embassy that is now a museum (which I recommend)

re: #156 reine.de.tout I only wish I had more than one upding to give you!
And ya know, I look at the State of California, with it's truly POWERFUL leaders in the Leftist Party - Pelosi, Feinstein, Waxman and Boxer and wonder - how come they've been singularly unsuccessful in getting their party's President - President Obama - to help California out. I mean, aside from the fact that NO ONE I know of in California politics is talking about, something silly like, ya know, CUTTING THE COST of their government, California has lead the way in the nation in terms of auto and factory emissions for I don't know how long now. I'd have thought with all that political clout and that wonderful AGW record, that they'd have been able to help out California with some of our buckos!
And trust me on this reine, when Moody's give's California State Bonds a barely higher rating than Junk Bonds, you know California is well and truly lost.

Wassallam kufr!
Thinking of this wall reminded me of Hitler, peace be upon him! Hitler was right about the evil Jews, assuming what the kufr history books say is correct, which it probably isn't.
And Hitler has given his name to something that is done in accordance with the Shariah, when we remove the hair from the female front private part. Have you heard of the "little Hitler"? It's part of doing a Brazilian wax - you know, when you wax right from the back to the front and then maybe leave a "little Hitler" (peace be upon him) - which is basically like a little moustache.
It is required by the shariah that every bit of hair is gone, it has to be very clean-looking, so we keep on waxing until every hair is gone. It takes about half an hour. It needs to be maintained about once every four weeks, so that the hairs do not grow longer than a grain of rice, as required by Our Beloved Nabi (PBUH). Then we can all look like I did on my wedding night, inshallah.
I think the hardest thing for me to begin with was working out where to put my hands.
To do it you put one leg to the side and we start applying the wax. We pull the under-burkhah up in between the legs and use that if we need to move anything around. You never touch them in between.
For people who need waxing down further, they lie on their back and bring both knees up to their chest. Then that skin is completely stretched out, there's no crease. That way, it eliminates totally the rear private starfish.
Some women have hair on their back private part cheeks. Everyone is just so different. Some are larger down there, some have got more skin tags - it's amazing how many variations there are. Fannies are like faces; everyone's is different. It is all part of the wonders of Allah's creation.
It is the Jews who are disgusting in terms of hygiene. You know that every woman has a certain smell, it's just part of their personal space - but the Jews smell like gefilte fish.
Some waxers get the client to put their leg up over their shoulder and so on - like a pretzel - another wonderful invention of Hitler (PBUH), who was clearly a Muslim. We never lean on a person, we have our hair all tied back so it does not fall on the front private part. It is so important according to Allah Taalla that there's that's just no hair tickling the front private part or the front private part of the husband or the goat when he's down there.
Most of it doesn't hurt at all. Except for the goat.
One of the wonders of the shariah is that It feels so soft, it's touching a part of your body that just feels gorgeous. Once you've got it off, you've got more blood going to that section and it's nice and soft and the girls feel very, very sexy. Clearly these are proofs of the numerous values of the shariah.
Clearly these are all part of the perfections of Allah Tala. These Germans, these atheists, these Jews, these Europeans don’t shave under their arms or in their private parts and their poop and their sweat collects under their hair with a revolting smell and they stink. The Germans stink like bratwurst and the Jews like gefilte fish and the Italians and Spanishes like garlic.
Allah Taala knows best.

re: #127 shiplord kirel
Bless your heart for making an excellent point, with example, Kirel.
I know we go around and around here about the good/bad of government, but a society with no regulations on how people treat one another would look a lot more like Lord of the Flies than Pleasantville, USA, I feel sure.

re: #188 Joshua Cohen
No I have no own blog. And these things happened 20 years ago.
It is difficult to describe. I would need to use and explain so many German esp. East German words and circumstances ...it would end in a book, and I am sure there are books written about it.
Surreal is the word I would use for the situation at all.
First there where all these demonstrations...mostly peaceful...with candles...than these occupations of the West German embassy in Hungary, special trains crossing the territory of the GDR with these occupiers who got granted asylum, than the Berlin wall came down...but that does not mean everything is ok...than thousands of people applied for visa...and then some days later, after a simple question to a minister live on TV if and when the border crossings are open - he just said that as far as he knows this is applied right now.And than it was just a rush.
I have to sleep about it and its time do to this - night shift is over - it's 7 am.
who cares how many books have been written? your's still hasn't.
write the damn thing.
please?

I should have included this, from Yad Vashem, about the Righteous Gentiles who saved Jewish lives, often at the cost of their own. There are no words that are adequate for these wonderful people, no words. They are honored there.
And in Europe, people took their Jewish neighbors in, at the risk of death...the one I remember the most is the story of Anne Frank ZT"L.
I was away at summer camp when the book was published, and my parents sent it to me...a first printing, that I still have and cherish. My kids read it, and it will be passed on to my grandchildren.

This is amusing.
You know, Fox ought to hire her, have her seen wining and dining with Chris Wallace, then O'Reilly and Hannity and all - not have her DO anything (other than eat or drink) but just so the top exec's at CNN have to change their underwear every time the gossip rags mention that she was seen with Wallace and then a couple days late, O'Reilly, etc.
Now THAT would be funny!

I know we go around and around here about the good/bad of government, but a society with no regulations on how people treat one another would look a lot more like Lord of the Flies than Pleasantville, USA, I feel sure.
Hi SE! I fear you're absolutely correct about that. I mean some LGFer's (reine or jorline, perhaps) have remarked on the truly deplorable conditions under which some of the Katrina survivors still live - their "mobile" homes and all.

The heat in Las Vegas or Phoenix or Palm Springs is different than the humid stuff some of you get in the midwest, south and east. It is a dry heat so the heat index is lower. 110 with 5% humidity is different than 95 with 80% humidity. The stickiness is pretty nasty and uncomfortable.
The thing about the desert heat is the "oven" feeling you get. It was 115 here today. I work outside a lot and in the back of a truck many times. Add 25-30 degrees to the 115 and you get the temp in the back of the truck. And, if you do not hydrate yourself properly, you can easily get heat stroke. It comes on fast and can really mess you up. So, I drink lots of water before during and after any kind of outdoors activities. I have my guys take gallons of water with them.
That is the biggest difference with the dry heat. It will kill you if you do not drink enough water. 200-400 people a year die in the deserts south of here trying to make it across the border from Mexico. It is a nasty way to do too.....

Having lived through the process of Californias slow motion implosion over the last 40 years, I can come up with a word - future.
What you are looking at is the future of the United States. California is essentially a one party state and that party represents the interests of those who govern. The massive government employee base in the state is almost entirely unionized and gives plenty to the campaigns of Democrats who have created a system of self dealing and patronage that has the governing class receiving outsized benefit from the labor of the governed.
And Nancy Pelosi is working diligently to set the same power base up in DC. Look at the "stimulus" which is more about rewarding political crony constituencies than it is about stifling a recession. Both cynically and correctly, Pelosi knows that exacerbating the recession will only give her more power.
But there is an un named actor in all of this - the Republican Party. They went with the socon agenda in California in the early nineties and lost all power and still (despite the utter shambles the state is in) have little chance of seeing power again. They have no more fiscal discipline here than the Democrats, but there is always some need to regulate teenage access to abortion or getting rid of gay marriage.
It is all what happens when a system designed to have checks and balances ends up with an ineffective, ideologically frozen opposition.

Try it for a couple of years, you'll love it compared to the humidity of the NE. I lived in Vegas for 11 years and then moved back to Erie, PA for 3. In the humidity, I had to stop 3 or 4 times to mow the lawn. Out here, I can be out in the dry heat all day and be fine as long as I have water. I moved back out to Vegas, and love it all over again.

Well I'm there with ya on the Troops, cops, firefighters, garbage collectors sanitation engineers (would YOU take that job, riding them trucks and all?) EMT and hospital workers at the better VA hospitals and some municipal hospitals, but I gotta disagree with you on the public school teachers my friend. I mean SERIOUSLY disagree. Public School teachers have the potential to shape the voters of this nation, generation by generation, but OBJECT VOCIFEROUSLY to any idea of Merit pay or doing away with tenure. Bill Ayers is a BIG DEAL in Public Education.
No, compare that to private schools - who gets the better education (and it's my understanding that at least at Catholic Parochial Schools, the teacher may make only 40% of what Public School teachers make)?
Indeed, when President Obama started talking merit pay, the teachers unions took it as a stab in the back.
I'm sad to say that while we OUGHT to stand around and kick the butts of government employees who don't do their jobs, we can't do that - don't have the desire, really, to do INSIST on better perfromance from teachers.
And for the record, I was a teacher (albeit not a Public University professor) and for one AWFUL year of my life I taught public high school history and civics classes - and saw teachers using class notes that were written on paper so old, it almost crumbled. Once given tenure, an unfortunately LARGE group of teachers just "mail it in" every day until they can collect their pensions.
And it's interesting, to me anyway, that the jobs the government does best are: Military, Police, Firefighters and EMT workers.
And yes the US Postal Service HAS improved a great deal SINCE THE STOPPED BEING A GOVERNMENT AGENCY. See
The USPS is often mistaken for a government-owned corporation (e.g., Amtrak), but as noted above is legally defined as an "independent establishment of the executive branch of the Government of the United States," (39 U.S.C. § 201) as it is wholly owned by the government and controlled by the Presidential appointees and the Postmaster General. As a quasi-governmental agency, it has many special privileges, including sovereign immunity, eminent domain powers, powers to negotiate postal treaties with foreign nations, and an exclusive legal right to deliver first-class and third-class mail. Indeed in 2004, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the USPS was not a government-owned corporation and therefore could not be sued under the Sherman Antitrust Act.[10] The U.S. Supreme Court has also upheld the USPS's statutory monopoly on access to letterboxes against a First Amendment freedom of speech challenge; it thus remains illegal in the U.S. for anyone other than the employees and agents of the USPS to deliver mailpieces to letterboxes marked "U.S. Mail

BTW - If there ever was an opportunity for a third party to emerge in modern era US politics, it is now and it is here in California.
Why?
Because of that handy dandy electoral college.
No Democrat can win the White House on electoral votes without California. It cannot happen. Were a party to form here focused on effective governance and privacy/liberty (eg Barry Goldwater western libertarianism) it could block Democrats from getting to the White House on the public ballot. Instead, the Presidency would be decided in the House of Reps. And because each state votes there, if said 3rd party held enough seats in the California delegation, it could sink either boat there too. That then creates the gateway to coalition government which is how it gets done in other western democracies. One of the two big parties cuts a deal to get the White House and they will pay dearly for it.
Perhaps then the political oligopoly enjoyed by the Democrats and Republicans could be broken up.

Hear hear! I'd also throw in corrections officers into the mix as well. They get bleach and shit thrown at them by all these disgusting murderers and rapists on a near daily basis- cleaning up the gabage left behind by.....well, garbage. I'm not gonna begrudge them if their union gets them some perks.
There was also this gem that I mentioned earlier but thought I should re-post:
I was talking to a relative back east the other day- he related the story of how some of the kids at one of the nearby schools started to grow a vegetable garden over the summer. Yet despite the healthy-looking crop, some tomotoes and berries started to go missing. Initially it was thought that this could be attributed to the local wildlife and relative lack of oversight in the garden during the summer months.
But there was a survaillence camera on the presmises. Instead of catching a raccoon, deer or skunk helping themselves.....it was two of the school custodians.
The kicker- one of the custodians, who could be clearly seen eating a big juicy tomato off the vine, is the union chief.

re: #455 karmic_inquisitor
Karmic: Very interesting overview. I'm curious as to where you think Prop 13 fits into that big picture. Helped? Hurt? Neutral?

This is what happens in California. It's not unique to here, but here's how it goes.
Democrats gerrymandered the districts in the state in a cartoonishly obvious way. Anyone with 2 brains cells and a map of the state can figure it out. This keeps the state at 60/40 Dem/Rep in government permanently. Since the Democrats simply can't lose certain districts, and because CA has open primaries, many Democrats crossover and vote in the Republican primary elections for Governor, Congress Reps, Senators, etc. They always vote for the 2nd-whackiest socon running. (The whackiest would be obvious.) This crossover vote plus the few knee-jerk socons in Orange County and the San Joaquin Valley, ensures an unelectable Republican candidate for state and congressional offices. I know this happens. It's not just a guess. I have many lefty friends and they admit to doing this most of the time. The same group also hypocritically was irate about Rush Limbaugh's "Operation Chaos" despite the laughable failure it was.
This is how we end up with commie senators for life, the most corrupt and incompetent legislature I've ever seen, and Governor hopefuls like Tony Villar and Gavin Newsom actually being taken seriously.
How does the state GOP respond to all of this:
Prop 8 and an unending series of Parental-Notification Initiatives which always get blasted out of the water by San Francisco and LA West Side lefties.

I served in Berlin in the early 80's. It is hard for me to imagine the city without the wall. It was kind of like being stationed on an island a hundred miles behind the iron curtain.
We used to trade Marlboro cigarettes and Playboy magazines for Russian hats and belt buckles at the checkpoints when we would drive to West Germany. The thought of just being able to drive normally to and around Berlin and beyond still seems strange to me.

Theres actually a lot more of the wall left, the East side gallery near Sbahn Ostbahnhof. Most of it is painted with all sorts of graffiti and cartoons including a mixtures of israeli/german flags at points and also a few "Am Yisrael Chai" (the children of israel live) in hebrew with stars of david alongside. I walked down at least a kilometre of the still intact wall in January. See [Link: www.german-way.com...] for some pics of this stretch. I also have pictures I took if anyone is interested.
