Speaking of Clowns

Schumer Says CBO ‘Wacky’ on Health Cost, Sees Passage

July 17 (Bloomberg) -- The Senate can pass legislation overhauling the U.S. health-care system by August with some Republican support even with the “wacky” cost estimates by the Congressional Budget Office, Senator Charles Schumer said.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus thinks his panel can draft a bill by July 21 or 22, Schumer, the No. 3 Democrat in the Senate, said in an interview with Bloomberg Television’s “Political Capital with Al Hunt,” airing today.

“Our preference far and away is for a bipartisan bill,” Schumer said. “If we can’t come to a bipartisan agreement, the Finance Committee will report out a Democratic bill.”

The New York senator said the CBO’s assessment that health-care costs would rise under legislation being considered by congressional Democrats doesn’t take into account savings from preventive care and efficiencies in the system.

“CBO’s scoring is a little bit wacky,” Schumer said of the nonpartisan agency’s estimates. “They are not quite fair because they don’t measure the cost savings down the road, just the immediate spending.”

Yep, your probably right. And now it's time for:

Howard Beale: I don't have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It's a depression. Everybody's out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel's work, banks are going bust, shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter. Punks are running wild in the street and there's nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there's no end to it. We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat, and we sit watching our TV's while some local newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes, as if that's the way it's supposed to be. We know things are bad - worse than bad. They're crazy. It's like everything everywhere is going crazy, so we don't go out anymore. We sit in the house, and slowly the world we are living in is getting smaller, and all we say is, 'Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV and my steel-belted radials and I won't say anything. Just leave us alone.' Well, I'm not gonna leave you alone. I want you to get mad! I don't want you to protest. I don't want you to riot - I don't want you to write to your congressman because I wouldn't know what to tell you to write. I don't know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians and the crime in the street. All I know is that first you've got to get mad."

I can no longer tolerate "Law & Order" with the little liberal sermon-ettes thrown in to every episode or their constant portrayal of conservatives as demented greedy characters. The smarmy self righteous attitude of the left has totally infiltrated that show propaganda.

I only watch SVU and the old ones with Jerry Orbach. If there's a moonbat theme, we change the channel.

It was dramatic.

I think he was into more than booze. Last year he had one of those nightmare hospital stories where we woke up in the middle of surgery and they couldn't put him out again. This happens sometimes with people who have seriously abused opiates for long periods of time. Their neuron receptors become immune to anesthesia.

I don't particularly like him but out of curiosity, what are his ratings like? Anyone Know?

Therein lies the problem. Beck, O'Reilly, Hannity TV, et al, are all bucking for ratings. They all have to say something loud to get noticed. The rapid cycle of TV breeds lack of content.
News, Information and reasoned opinion don't sell. Rants and special commentary do. Deaths of soldiers don't rate mention unless civilians are also killed and nothing is as important as Michael Jackson, dead or alive. Dog the bail jumping bounty hunter sells a few ads.
Newscasts aren't news. Reality shows aren't real. With the laudible exception of The New Yankee Workshop.
Radio has the same to a lesser degree as does the internet,. and it takes more research to establish the truth through the bull.
That takes more time than most working people have.
People have to work harder every day just to get by.

Cantor called an afternoon news conference to pre-empt remarks Biden is expected to make today in Richmond in support of the recovery bill, excerpts of which were obtained in advance by The Washington Post.

"To those who say that our economic decisions 'have not produced jobs, have not produced and simply have not worked' I say, take a look around," Biden will say while visiting Cantor's home district.

"I say, 'Don't let your opposition to the Recovery Act blind you to its results. Come see what I see everywhere I go: workers rehired, factories reopened, cops on the street, teachers in the classroom, progress toward getting our economy back on the move.'"

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh and don't forget this gem...Go Joe Go!

Joe Biden: ‘We Have to Go Spend Money to Keep From Going Bankrupt’

Vice President Joe Biden told people attending an AARP town hall meeting that unless the Democrat-supported health care plan becomes law the nation will go bankrupt and that the only way to avoid that fate is for the government to spend more money.

I was really glad that people were restrained toward Mulims living in this country after 9/11 & Bush had a lot to do with it.
Hollywood however siezed the opportunity to make Mulims the victims.
As I recall the 3,000 that died on 9/11 were the victims.

And what gets shown abroad isn't the news coverage, where there were no more than a couple of isolated incidents of attacks against Muslims, but the TV shows and movies, leading Muslims and others to think that there really were a lot of such attacks.

They had one about Americans beheading people for some right-wing radical cause. Was so disgusted, we changed the channel.

I remember one where some right-wing milita group robbed an armoured truck in NYC. As they raid the basement of one of the leader's homes, the basement is bristling with all kinds of nasty-looking weaponry (most of which probably wouldn't have been legal in NY state in the first place) and one of the detectives said 'Charlton Heston should take a look at this'.....

I'm not saying right-wing extremists robbing armoured cars is beyond the pale, but that would probably be more likely in Denver or Seattle.

Left-wing terrorist shitstains robbing armoured cars in the NY Metropolitan area? That's happened in my lietime....

The number of people searching for the term “economic depression” on Google is down to normal levels, Summers said.

Meanwhile, the sun has recently outshone the Earth in Google searches, despite both having been eclipsed by the moon for a moment earlier this year.

224 Nevergiveup  Fri, Jul 17, 2009 2:40:51pm

A handful of lawmakers are gearing up for a fight to largely exempt military and veterans benefits from the broader health care reform movement.

Two issues are involved. One has to do with whether military and veterans benefits could be taxed in the same fashion as employer-provided health benefits, a proposal included in the 1,018-page health care bill being taken up by the House Education and Labor Committee.

A second question involves potential federally imposed limits on the types and cost of care covered by health insurance, limits that could apply to both direct care from military hospitals and clinics and from the Tricare health plan, as well as to direct care from the veterans health care system.

[Link: www.navytimes.com...]

This will pose a problem for Democrats, who fear that allowing any exemptions from the overall health reform effort opens the door for other changes that could undermine the legislation

This is interesting both to me personally, but also to possible hope of also torpedoing the whole health care reform mess I hope.

"Take back America." OK, except how do you "take back" America when elections are years away? Well, he explains that:

"We surround them."

Sorry, I can't see "surrounding" somebody you consider an enemy, in anything but a military context.

"Outnumber" would mean we could outvote them. That's not what he said. He said "surround," and "take back." If you believe he chooses his language to encourage people to be better citizens and more informed voters, you have much more trust of Beck's motives than I do.

That was really funny. Unlike many lizards here, I happen to think he makes many a lot sense. I can appreciate the chicken little comparison to Beck, but clearly he doesn't make this stuff up that he rants about. The world is going frigging nutz and the US is joining the cuckoo party.

Clearly, he'll be a good fit at that particular party.

Opnion: No, Beck doesn't advocate violence directly. Their legal department would frown on that. He uses euphemisms, which the faithful have no problem interpreting.

I take the "Take Back America" theme is not about violence. It is about attending the local government meetings and zoning commissions and school board meetings and sounding off. The squeeky wheel gets the grease type of thing. AND there are always some local elections, bonds, etc going on. So even if we have to wait until 2010 to actually oust some congresspeoples, we can start NOW to lay the groundwork to discredit them. Obama started campaigning the day he hit the US Senate.

Surround the enemy and pick them off one by one. Not violently but by exposing their idealogical stance. It is what the Dems do every time a Rep becomes well known. Look at what they did to Palin. Wolves do the same thing:

Seperate from the herd
small attacks until hamstrung
move the pack in for the kill

Using these terms in an ideological way is not the same as using them in a military way.

IA sailor killed in Afghanistan laid to rest
The Associated Press
Posted : Friday Jul 17, 2009 12:53:44 EDT
HENRYETTA, Okla. — An Oklahoma sailor who died in a roadside bombing in Afghanistan was remembered in funeral services for his fire and determination.

[Link: www.navytimes.com...]

Paslay said the news of Randolph’s death overwhelmed him, as it did much of the community who knew the sailor.

Paslay told mourners he had read the Navy’s creed, and three words — honor, courage and commitment — stood out.

“That’s what the Navy is all about,” Paslay said, “and that’s what Tony was all about.

“We should be grateful today as people for having someone like that.”

I got on my high-horse and offered my opinion that, ends-versus-means aside, it takes more guts to perpetrate violence than to advocate it. "Guts" is a neutral quality, meaning initiative. Having guts doesn't make somebody a hero. Especially if they use that initiative to murder.

You used McVeigh as an example of people who are mad about the status quo of gummint. The difference is that most folks who are mad about the status quo of gummint don't go around blowing up buildings and killing people like McVeigh.

Obama Addresses Concerns Over Health-Care Costs

If we don't get health care reform done now, then no one's health insurance is going to be secure, because you're going to continue to see premiums going up at astronomical rates, out-of-pocket costs going up at astronomical rates, and people who lose their jobs or have a preexisting medical condition or changing their jobs finding themselves in a situation where they cannot get health care.

And that's not a future that I accept for the United States of America. That's why those who are betting against this happening this year are badly mistaken.

We are going to get this done. We will reform health care. It will happen this year. I'm absolutely convinced of that.

CBO disses Obama's health care reform

Director Douglas Elmendorf told the Senate Budget Committee Thursday:
We do not see the sort of fundamental changes that would be necessary to reduce the trajectory of federal health spending by a significant amount. On the contrary, the legislation significantly expands the federal responsibility.

That's kind of my point. I think Beck's appeal is that he makes other people feel like they're not nuts. His presentation sometimes is out there but that's entertainment. I don't think he's dangerous or necessarily a buffoon and he has had me laughing out loud at least once each show.

My mom adores him.

re: #275 ShanghaiEd

OK. I am 100%, and always, against anybody advocating and perpetrating violence. For any cause. Anybody who's read my hapless ramblings here knows this.

Here's the genesis of the fecal matter I dropped in the punchbowl just now: At #39, you said, "The one thing to know about Beck is that he is very angry at the status quo in gummint." At #81, haakondahl replied, "So is McVeigh." Both very true statements.

I got on my high-horse and offered my opinion that, ends-versus-means aside, it takes more guts to perpetrate violence than to advocate it. "Guts" is a neutral quality, meaning initiative. Having guts doesn't make somebody a hero. Especially if they use that initiative to murder.

See what I'm getting at?

No, I don't see what you're getting at. See Mandy's #245 & Ziggy's #221 posts on this.

Probably the best thing to do at this point is to drop the subject.

re: #231 nyc redneck

"having guts" is not a relative terem. at least not in this country.
describing mcveigh as someone who has the "guts' to commit heinous terror acts can only be interpreted as subtle praise for the s.o.b.
comparing him to glenn beck is ridiculous.
mcveigh is nothing but a terrorist madman killer. having 'guts' and initiative are very inappropriate ways to refer to him.

Point taken. But is "we surround them" a relative term in America? That doesn't sound like a threat to you?

Re: Healthcare--or anything else--and the need for speed.

I said before, during the Stimulus nonsense, and will say again, that any negotiation in which one of the parties is pushing for speed, speed, speed is a negotiation in which that party is trying to ream the other. Anyone who has ever been hustled by a used-car, computer, or cell-phone salesman knows what I mean. The need for speed--this offer is only good for five more minutes!--is a tactic used by people who don't want you to look at the fine print, don't want you to know what you're committing to.

I know most people here are aware of that, but it needs to be said often anyway.

Beautiful. Any Republican representatitives or staffers or even reasonable Democrats reading this take heed and act on slowing this express train down.

I think that we should be more understanding and forgiving of the rights and feelings of the persecuted vampire minority. It is not easy being undead. There is so much malice and hatred of them.

It is just undeadephobia perpetrated by Hollywood and an evil lobby in congress.

Vampires do not hate the living. They love the living. They could not exist without us, and if you look at the way that vampires treat many of the living, you will see that they are the undead of tolerance and peace. Renfield was a trusted and beloved friend who was happy in his position.

As far as vampires are concerned, the living are a protected class of people, who only need to pay a small tax every now and then for their own protection. Vampires do not discriminate against anyone.

Sure they seem odd to us in the West, but there is a rich and vibrant vampire culture that we should embrace. Vampires have contributed much to society, but they never get credit for it. Without them we would not have fashionable black clothing of the right to be whiny goths.

I for one am tired of the racist apartheid ways in which we force vampires to live on the fringes of society in run down castles or cemeteries. The indignity and humiliation that they feel nightly having to dodge religious fanatics who wave crosses at them is intolerable. The restrictions on their movements, when they only want to go out and get some food is not something that any American would stand for!

So please, join me a supporting vampires against their oppressors.

Dropping off a truck bomb, walking anonymously away, and killing kids is absent in ANY definition of guts. Exactly the opposite.

Don't forget the difficulty vampires have in obtaining adequate dental plans.

Or all of the mean intolerant things that people say... like vampires just suck. Or the way that white Christian men have been oppressing them for years.

Think of all of the literal crusades against them.

They wake up one night and some evil white Christian European imperialist oppressor is waving a cross at them and trying to drive a piece of wood through their hearts!

I am so ashamed of white culture when I think that they did this. It was a crime like the inquisition. The real holocaust has always been directed at vampires.

The vampires lived in peace in their land of Transylvania for years without bothering anyone or doing anything to hurt anyone when they were colonized by racist Europeans.

re: #112 ShanghaiEd

Beck doesn't have McVeigh's guts. Beck doesn't mind inspiring other people to get their hands bloody, though. Just my two cents.

I'd guess your primary intent was to bash Beck not praise McVeigh, but insofar as you did praise McVeigh by saying he had guts (which I assume you'd agree is the same thing as courage) I think you were correct. Assuming however, that he was sane and was aware of the possibility of the consequence of his actions to him personally.
A common definition of courage:
1. the ability to control fear and to be willing to deal with something that is dangerous, difficult, or unpleasant
The history of the word:
2. c.1300, from O.Fr. corage, from V.L. *coraticum, from L. cor "heart," which remains a common metaphor for inner strength. In M.E., used broadly for "what is in one's mind or thoughts," hence "bravery," but also "wrath, pride, confidence, lustiness," or any sort of inclination. Replaced O.E. ellen, which also meant "zeal, strength."
From the definitions I've seen, courage does not require morality or goodness. Hence a Spanish explorer who came to the new world to pillage, rape and plunder could and would be said to have courage. If I seek out karate masters and professional boxers to attack with my bare hands, while having no such skills myself, I would have courage, regardless of whether I had a right to do so.

On the other hand, a suicide bomber inspired by religious fervor, would not necessarily have courage, if he thinks god is protecting him or that he will immediately go to another better world.

I certainly wouldn't say Biden is perfect, but it's a shame that far too many of the people that comment here on LGF would paint someone as idiotic and worthless as Palin as if she's a masterpiece. She's a quitter and a fool.

O.K. hotshot. Since you asked, please tell us all just what you think the Bush Doctrine was. Here's a clue - its a four part answer.

Letterman said it all for your MSM, now didn't he? How's Perky's ratings these days, and oh, BTW, you're on the blog that revealed to the world just how honest Dan Rather is, right?

As for VP Biden, who has become the biggest joke in US VP history, all by himself ("Yea, we're bust folks, but we got to keep on spending like drunken sailors, spending other folk's $, cause Iwon Obeyme says so") - Palin cleaned his clock in their debate. Remember, old "Tell us it ain't so Joe" was telling us that FDR watched TV before TV was even invented, or do you believe the Stalin tactic of the Left to rewrite history to accommodate Biden's stupid claim? Likely.

Open that time capsule in 2010 and see what impact Palin is having on US politics when Obeyme is out of $, jobs, cred, political support from Dems in the House running for their jobs by telling voters they never met the fraud, and posters of your ilk are screaming RACISTS.

Go back to Huuf&Puff/KosakKids/DU, please. Wink, Wink, You Betcha!

Also, I don't see a hell of a lot of Palin supporters in the Republican part so you've a bit of a straw argument going here. I like her personally but unless she improves her knowledge and masters her argument skills her charisma will only take her so far. She will be a tremendous asset in raising cash. This can not be under estimated. Feel free to bash her all you want if it makes you feel better but I think she's great. I wish her and her family the very best. Yea totally. I mean, if something huge happens (election night, etc...) I'll watch a bit of TV. Other than that....*shrugs*.....I live fine with the net, I don't have to listen to assholes with their big mouths full of hot air, and I don't have to sit through tons of boring commercials. In fact, now that I'm totally off TV, I find commercials to be so incredibly "in your face" when I do see one that it's obnoxious as total hell and all. It's incredible. I used to watch TV all the time, and I never noticed. Now I'm all like wow every time I see one. It really blew me away the first time that happened to me too. I was a bit shocked at how loud they were and how invasive they were - and I'm like really far from sensitive.

They have to be loud and invasive - after all, they have to overcome the stupor that TV induces on you between the breaks.
