Video: CO2 Bubbling Up, Up, Up

Environment • Views: 2,027

This animated graph shows surface measurements of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere at various latitudes, within a time period spanning 1979 to 2006, with a map displaying where the data came from. At the end, the graph expands to include ice core measurements back to the 19th century. Hockey stick, anyone?

It’s a pretty effective demonstration of the precipitous increase in human-caused CO2.

Yes, I have that app -- it would be nice if it showed his blog posts too, though.

I predict that for some people, talking about CRU will be much more important than the posted video.

There is widespread agreement on the primary Anthropogenic influence on elevated Atmospheric CO2.

How would such a video animation be made? Is it frame by frame in photo-shop. or some sort of flash project?

5 Racer X  Wed, Feb 24, 2010 4:07:53pm

I blame Coke and Pepsi. Increased soft drink production coincides with the carbonation of the planet.

It's not so much that one follows the other, it's that they're out of sync between the hemispheres.

The pattern you're seeing over the course of the year is a drop during the summer as the biosphere removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and a rise during the winter as man-made and natural sources dominate.

The variation is much more pronounced in the northern hemisphere because both emissions and vegetation are much higher.

[Link: www.washingtonmonthly.com...]

Dude, I hate to tell you this but plants don't just feed off of CO2, yes its important and yes they give off oxygen as a by product of photosynthesis, but they also need nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium and a whole host of other minerals. If every man, woman, and child on the planet planted a tree tomorrow, it wouldn't be enough to keep the CO2 levels stable. The deforestation that's occurring across the planet is accelerating the runaway greenhouse effect. Our oceans also absorb tons of CO2 and they're not able to make up for the amount that the volcanoes and humanity are pumping out across the globe. If you want more info I have a whole host of collage horticulture books I can consult on to get you the stats on CO2 to Oxygen ratios that certain plants put out. I hope some of this helps understanding of the problem at hand....

This stuff works a lot different in real life than it does in the movies. There were probably 100's of people involved in this; handlers, surveillance, coordinators, planners, forgers, technical support, various experts, communications, etc. The lone renegade assassin only works in spy novels. Palin opens sixth seal:

"IDAHO FALLS, ID—Speaking unto an audience of anti-immigration advocates, global-warming deniers, and members of the Tea Party Nation, former Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin gave forth utterances Monday that reportedly opened the sixth seal of the Book of the Apocalypse.

"Wow, it's good to be here, just shootin' the breeze with a bunch of real, hardworking Americans who love their freedom," said Palin, her words echoing across the Idaho Falls Civic Auditorium as mighty tremors caused great unrest beneath the land and the sea. "So are the little guys like you and me gonna fight these Washington insiders with their big government agenda? You betcha we are!"

And lo, there was then a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair; and the moon became as blood; and "gosh" was spoken repeatedly; and the stars of heaven fell upon the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken by a mighty wind."
Sixth seal.

Thanks! I like frowny faces and smiley faces, they help me convey my mind and sincerity. I spent over twenty years studying horticulture until I injured my back, somehow lifting 150 lb trees lost its appeal with muscle spasms running down my legs and up my back. I have over 80 plants throughout my apartment and on the front porch. I'm trying to contribute to the oxygen balance but I'd have to have over an acre to do any good I'm afraid. :-)

They get "caught" all the time. They poison people's chocolates, give them exploding phones, etc. They only get busted after the fact. That may have been the point. They want Hamas terrorists to know that they aren't safe even in Muslim countries. The Israelis can operate anywhere and they might have been making a point of letting terrorists know it.

I don't question that the CO2 level in the atmosphere has increased. I do wonder why we only seem to hear about how the buildup is due to burning of fossil fuels, and never because of rampant deforestation around the globe. I'm sure its some combination of those effects leading to the overall trend.

But any long-term solution has to address both sides of the equation or it won't accomplish much if anything.

To be fair, the more sober wing of the let's not do anything lobby concedes that CO2 is rising because of human use of fossil fuels, and secondarily, because of deforestation.

They also concede that CO2 is a greenhouse gas.

They will even concede that perhaps this extra CO2 will make things warmer.

And then they argue that unless we know for absolute certain that it will make things warmer, and unless we know for sure exactly how much warmer, and unless we know for sure that the harmful consequences far outweigh the helpful ones, and unless we know for sure that the steps we propose to take will solve the problem, the best thing to do is sit tight and gather more data.

Of course, sitting tight is not what we're doing. We're pumping more CO2 into the atmosphere at an accelerating rate.

Of course, we can never know the information they want to the "for sure" standard.

Of course, even if we did, they'd want still more assurance.

The one legitimate point they make is that the steps proposed in the Kyoto Protocol, and then at Copenhagen, would be both very expensive and quite futile. Absent dramatic increases in energy production from wind, solar, nuclear, and other green sources, industrial civilizations simply aren't going to back off and use less coal and forgo the advantages of electricity. Even if the U.S. and Europe did so, which we won't, China and India's rising and already greater production would be sufficient to keep AGW pumping away.

Conservation, frugality, and rationing are fun to talk about over herbal tea and arrugula salad, but they're a lot less attractive to the broad masses and to the ruling elites than they are to the chattering class. Scrimping and saving with no end in sight and no hope for a better future just won't fly.

I hate to rain on your parade but your link to RealClimate does nothing to refute the fact that CO2 emissions from the burning of fossil fuels is responsible for the current warming of the earths atmosphere and oceans.

You know, you can't really see CO2. So some people tend to ignore the
consequences of much too much of it in the atmosphere.

So try this experiment.

The next time you are in Las Vegas head out east to visit one of the marvels of engineering, the Hoover Dam. Even though it will cost more, you should pay to visit all of the open engineering spaces. And outside pay attention and you can see where they buried a dog accidentally killed during construction. (As a pet person that made my wife very sad).

Then head back west late in the afternoon.

Look carefully at the far horizon.

Ask yourself what that big old smudge you see in the sky might be.

"Oh my goodness, you mean we are actually BREATHING all that junk on the way to the casinos and that Penn and Teller show? YUCK"

That is a very visible sign of how human acts affect the environment. I am fairly certain the water level won't rise high enough to swamp Las Vegas. But do you all really want to spend the rest of your life breathing all that stuff?

Charles, that is a very nice and convincing illustration. If the scientist would take their arrogance and condescension out of their arguments, as you have, their efforts to convince the global population that something needs to be done would not be in a shambles.

Numbers don't lie, leave that to politicians.

Hmm, that coincides pretty good with the non-warming that's occurred since the mid-90's.

Reginald, please assist me. At time 7:10 of the video in quoting the paper the word "may" is used about the forcing of CO2 versus words like does or will. If the video is sited as proof then why use the word "may"?

Also please tell me how the "weak" Milankovitch(sp) variations can override the CO2 at the top of the cycle and drive the temperature down.

Lastly, the difference in CO2 from bottom of cylce to top of the cycle in glaciation is roughly 180 ppm to 300 ppm which is larger than the difference between pre-industrial to now, 288 to 388. Shouldn't we have seen temperatures stay high?

uhh what exactly is the news here? that since the beginning of the Industrial revolution CO2 has increased from 280 to 380 ppm? this is disputed by nobody.

If you really want to "understand", why don't you study some of the very numerous online resources that go into detail about the energy budget of the Earth's surface?

89 MKELLY  Thu, Feb 25, 2010 1:48:04pm

re: #88 freetoken

You make an unwarranted assumption about what I have and have not studied. I watched the video linked to and have questions about that video. If you can answer the questions please do.

90 Reginald Perrin  Thu, Feb 25, 2010 1:49:26pm

re: #83 MKELLY

Which of the three Milankovich cycles were you referring to and what do you mean by weak?

Why do you assume that Milankovich cycles and CO2 are the only factors that lead to and then out of glacial periods, nobody has ever made that claim? There are numerous other factors involved, try opening your mind and doing some research instead of trolling blogs.
You deniers have the tendency to be binary thinkers and do not see the interconnectedness of everything. You look for words to parse or view an insignificant error in a 950 page report as proof that global warming has been disproved.

BTW, your sarcastic reply to Charles isn't going to help win you any friends here and is going to most likely get you written off as just another silly little troll.

91 MKelly  Thu, Feb 25, 2010 2:15:08pm

re: #90 Reginald Perrin

The video used the word "weak" when referring to the cycles. And I don't assume anything. I ask you questions about the video you linked. If you are not able to answer the questions please say so.

I read and listen. Words have meanings and educated people use words to convey ideas. The word "may" has a meaning and cannot be used to imply proof as the video claims. Does and will would denote an absolute that leaves no doubt, but the authors of the study in the video must have some level of doubt since they used the word "may". If they have doubt why shouldn't I.

I was not being sarcastic. I asked a question and get called a name. Although milder than most still no answer to questions just name calling.

You call me a denier but you have no idea what I believe or think. Any question at all gets the same response, name calling. No honest give and take just name calling.

I called you a denier after I took the time to go into the archives and read all of your past comments.

I am on the side of not accepting the idea that CO2 is causing global warming.

Oh, please, drop the ploy. Nothing, I say NOTHING, will convince you that AGW is really and truly happening.

94 Conservative Physicist  Fri, Feb 26, 2010 12:37:22pm

I would like to point out two things....

1) Correlation does not mean causation
2) Which came first, higher CO2 levels and then higher temperatures or higher temperatures and then higher CO2 levels...

The earth's carbon dioxide cycle should LOWER temps as CO2 levels rise since more CO2 can dissolve in the oceans however this process requires 400,000 YEARS to see any REAL change. So over a small 100 year data set (or even 2000 years per Dr. Mann's graph) you can easily imagine that you would see both increased carbon dioxide and higher temps as shown since 1979.

This is not to say there is NOT a correlation (because although correlation does not necessarily PROVE causation, they certainly can be linked). But until scientists can PROVE that increased CO2 came first then higher temps, I'm not jumping on EITHER bandwagon.
