Tech Note: LGF Pages Bookmarklet, Now with Image Uploading

Technology • Views: 12,907

LGF Pages has quietly transmogrified into a full-featured blogging tool, with embedded videos and images, text formatting, “shadowbox” image popups, auto-linking, and more!

If you have an LGF account, you now have your own blog with its own LGF URL. The address of your LGF Page is:

littlegreenfootballs.com

(Replace “username” with your registered LGF name, substituting the ‘+’ character for any spaces.)

To post to your LGF Page, I designed the LGF Pages Bookmarklet, a tiny bit of Javascript code that you drag to your browser’s bookmarks bar, letting you easily post articles to your Page with links and quotes from any website. Here’s the Javascript link — if you haven’t already, drag and drop the following link on your bookmarks bar and make sure it’s titled “LGF Pages:”

LGF Pages

When you select some text on a web page and click the bookmarklet in your browser bar, the LGF Pages window opens with the link, title, and quotes already filled in.

Here’s a diagram to help explain all the elements in the LGF Pages bookmarklet.

1. Your username and personal icon, just to remind you who you are.

2. A long list of categories; pick the one that best suits your subject. This field is required. (If you don’t see a category that fits, suggest it to us and if it makes sense we’ll add it.)

3. The title for your Page. By default, this is filled in with the title of the web page you were viewing when you clicked the bookmarklet, but you can edit this if you wish, or replace it with your own title. This field is required.

4. The main text of each page can be up to 16,384 characters in length, a number chosen solely because it’s a power of 2. As you type in the “Text” field, the “Remaining” indicator shows how many characters you have left.

5. These five buttons give you tools for formatting text or creating an HTML link to another website. To use them, select the text you want to format, then click the button; the selected text will be “wrapped” with the necessary HTML code. When you click the link button, you will be prompted for a URL.

6. The “Text” field is where you enter the main body of your Page. When you click the bookmarklet, the URL of the web page you were viewing is automatically placed at the beginning, followed by any text you selected on the page, marked up as a blockquote. From here, your imagination is the limit.

Note: quotes from articles should be kept short, to illustrate a point. Quoting an entire article is usually a copyright violation, so please don’t do it; pages with too much quoted material may be edited or deleted.

7. To further aid in categorizing and searching LGF Pages, you can also enter “tags” that help identify the subjects in your Page. Tags can be more than one word, and you separate multiple tags with commas. This field is optional.

8. This is the big new feature of the day! You can now upload images to be embedded within your LGF Pages. When you click this sweet little baby of a button, up pops a window that lets you select an image file from your computer and upload it to LGF. There’s a generous size limit per image of 200K, and images can be in JPEG, GIF, or PNG formats. (We have a pretty large hard drive in our server, but if storage starts to be a problem I may have to impose some size limits on each user’s account.) After uploading a valid image, you’ll see a page with the HTML code for the image. Select the alignment you desire (center, left, or right); “center” displays the image on its own line in the center of the page, “left” or “right” causes the image to “float” and text wraps around it. (TIP: Left or right alignment works better with smaller images, to avoid overwhelming the text.) When you click the button to “Insert code and close,” the HTML code for the image will be inserted into the “Text” field wherever the cursor was when you clicked “Upload Image” — so make sure the insertion point is at the spot where you want your image, before clicking the Upload button.

Embedded images are limited to a maximum of 500 pixels in width, and 600 pixels in height. If you upload a larger image, the embedded code will have its dimensions resized, but it will also automatically be turned into a “shadowbox” image, so that clicking on the resized embedded image will display the larger image in full-screen mode.

Note: LGF prevents hotlinking to images on our server, so you can’t use this account as an all-purpose image host and link to your uploaded images at other sites. Reason: bandwidth. There are some good image hosting services out there on the intrawebs; Google ’em if you need this.

9. The preview button displays a formatted preview of your Page, looking approximately as it will when posted. It’s a very good idea to use this before hitting the Submit button, to make sure everything looks the way you intended.

10. Cancel. What more need be said?

11. This is the main guy here, the big burrito. Hit this bad boy and your Page becomes public, for better or worse, speak now or forever hold your peace.

In addition to these features, most of the automagic markup features that we have in our user comments also apply to your LGF pages:

• If you put a website address (URL) on its own line, it will be automatically converted to an HTML link.

• If you put the URL of a video page at YouTube, LiveLeak, Vimeo, or Google Video on its own line, it will be automatically converted to an embedded video.

• If you put the URL of an MP3 file on its own line, it will be automatically converted to a playable audio track. The MP3 file has to be on another server; you can’t upload MP3s to LGF.

• If you put the URL of an image file (ending in .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, or .png) on its own line, it will be converted to a special “shadowbox” link that uses Javascript to display the image using the full screen.

Hey, image uploading, might need to check that out.

Question if I may:

Once I've loaded an image onto the LGF server on my page, is there a way to then use that image in the normal comments section so that it pops up like a jpg?

Wow.
Just wow. Amazing stuff.

Time to consider hitting that "donate" button, folks, and/or buying your very own copy of Reality Bites, Volume 2 of the LGF Cookbook, to help support LGF and all the great features here! While you're at it, go ahead and check out Volume 1 as well!

Wow. That's got to increase bandwidth. Which used to be a problem long ago, stopped being so, but at your rate it's going to cost money. This is very generous of you. Thanks. (Don't know if I'll use it but I understand the cost of providing it)

Gulf Leak:

Here is a photo of the smaller top hat, already lowered to the sea-bed, seen from the control room on the Viking Poseidon.

Image: 4604296329_01ec4f341e.jpg

Note the top had is rigged to inject methanol to counter the methane hydrates that form when the methane mixes with seawater at this depth. Those hydrates float, clogging the riser and creating buoyancy. A smaller top hat will allow less water in to minimise this effect. There is also a rubber gasket for the same purpose.

I believe this is the top hat that would go on top of the BOP stack should they decide to cut the riser and cap it. This will be tried should the mud top kill fail.

Damn now I actually have to give serious consideration to blogging some of my own ideas.

Question Charles, what is "too controversial" to post there? If I start blogging about exactly why Paul sucks and how he has managed to almost singlehandedly ruined Christianity is it all going to end up being deleted when people whine about it?

17 Charles Johnson  Tue, May 25, 2010 4:02:31pm

I am preventing hotlinking to uploaded images, by the way, so you won't be able to link to them on other websites. Gotta do this to keep bandwidth down.

So BP fucks up one well, and gets two more in the process...I know, the 'relief' wells are supposed to help slow the pressure on the leak, but I'd prefer if they were forced to plug these fuckers once they're done. Make BP go drill in Iraq if they want to get oil.

Cutting the BOP stack and putting a smaller top hat on it should have been their first effort. It would have reduced the number of leaks to manage from three to one, and while the gusher might have been far more violent in the short term, it might have been the best shot at stopping the leak early.

Thanks for this info, Bagua...I'm still skeptical about BP, as you can see...not trying to piss in your punch bowl.

I'm skeptical about BP, as well.
But if you didn't see it in the previous thread, Bagua linked to this video from BP explaining their efforts. It is heavy on "trust us, we're doing all we can" from BP. It's still informative.

Ideally, I would rather see the President's approval numbers edging upwards, while his disapproval numbers edging downward.

By heading towards the middle - and staying there - shows the country is polarized. It also indicates there have been no big 'wins' to speak of.

For some reason, downsizing the pic from 1.6 M to under 200k compressed the image laterally, at least when viewing the image on the LGF page. He's a bit longer than that.

But oh, how cool is this?

My advice: don't.

For what it's worth, the clean, spare appearance of the main blog means a lot to a word person like me.

Anyone who wants to share an image can link to the relevant LGF pages here on the threads.

re: #69 JasonA

Yeah, if you're accepting opinions on the matter I have to echo the Roman's concerns. Imagine those 1000+ comment threads with pictures added. Yikes.

Images could be severely limited in size, and hey, if it sucks, they could always be disabled again.

To avoid trollery, perhaps a minimum of X comments before image posting privileges?

Hmm. I have Photoshop set to keep the width/height ratio, and the smaller pic looked fine in that program - just came out funny on the blog.

Seriously, I would be happy to tell you the whole story, but not here. The Borgmocrats are all over it, speculating that I can drive, so I'm not blind, I can walk, so I'm not physically impaired, I listen to music, so I'm not deaf, and therefore Haku is a scam on the part of Cato the Welfare Cheat (I'm not on welfare, either, but they don't care) to get speshul treetment.

re: #27 darthstar

Cutting the BOP stack and putting a smaller top hat on it should have been their first effort. It would have reduced the number of leaks to manage from three to one, and while the gusher might have been far more violent in the short term, it might have been the best shot at stopping the leak early.

Thanks for this info, Bagua...I'm still skeptical about BP, as you can see...not trying to piss in your punch bowl.

Nope, all the indications are that the bent riser is choking off the flow at the kink. Thus moving directly to cut off the riser near the top of the stack could increase the flow considerably. The delay is the time is takes to access the flow and make the best choice. Also, this has never been done at this depth and may not succeed, as was the case with the first, massive dome they tried. The small one has been custom engineered and built and may well fail.

Note also, that they have been trying other options on the BOP while preparing for the possibility you favour. The initial screw up may well fall on BP, but they are not otherwise incompetent.

You have it wrong. Hate is its own reward.

As humans, we are addicted to emotion. We want to feel emotion, the stronger the better. Hate and anger are the strongest emotions we can feel while still remaining self-absorbed.

Fear? Fear is strong, but makes us feel vulnerable and weak. We might tolerate it, even enjoy it in small doses, but not too often or for too long.

Love? Love is difficult, and requires you to sublimate some part of yourself at the very least, and to incorporate someone else into your self-centred universe. Not everyone has the depth or personal self-esteem to do that.

Hero worship and infatuation are strong emotions too, but ultimately they require cooperation of someone else. We might devour every word and action that they do, but if we can't get access to news or something about them, or if they fail to meet the ideal we have of them, the emotion rings hollow.

Happiness and pleasure can be too transient. In the absence of an obvious, strong stimulus, it takes effort for many people to be happy.

But anger - anger is easy to find. We can find things that make us angry anywhere. It doesn't require us to be anything but self-absorbed, because we can easily hate and be angry at that which is not-self. Hate and anger never get old.

They may be easy, but i quite disagree that hate and anger are their own reward. They sever relationships, make simple interactions difficult, and lead to regrettable actions...which then require self-reflection and apology, or further hate and anger in pursuit of avoidance.

I have that concern also, especially about comment threads (more than pages).
I don't put it past the obsessives to start linking really heinous shit, and you know they'd try to do it at a time when monitoring is light.

Tangent: category sections. I would use one for Women if we had it, specifically some single category for Reproductive Rights (or whatever). Right now items I post about the anti-choice freaks wind up in a number of different categories-- sometimes World News, sometimes US News, sometimes Health, sometimes Wingnuts. A Women category would also help for other issues like FGM.
This is my own personal thing, however, and with pages I just add tags like Reproductive Rights or War on Women or whatever.

Also, maybe a category for gay rights. Especially with people tracking DOMA and DADT now.

My two cents.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, May 25 (Reuters) - The Trans-Alaska Pipeline, partly owned by BP (BP.L: Quote, Profile, Research), shut down on Tuesday after a crude oil spill, drastically cutting supply out of Alaska's oilfields.

The accident comes at a difficult time for BP -- the largest single owner of the pipeline, holding 47 percent of Alyeska -- as it struggles to plug a gushing Gulf of Mexico oil well [ID:nN2597511].

I'm checking for extent of the spill.

You are right, but much like crack and heroin, they're still preferable than the alternative to the addict. That's what I mean by their own reward.

Tales of a Music Collector, Episode 282:

A triumph last night!

I first heard the Portuguese Fado in 1984, when I went to visit my girlfriend in Eugene, Oregon.

She had a cassette from a friend that was partially occupied by this strange, sad music the likes of which I had never heard before.

The label just said "Fado". I came to find out that it's known, among other things, as the European Blues.

I've been collecting it now for 26 years. And I made a copy of the tape, which I still have.

But it took me until last year to even find out the artist's name. Ada de Castro.

And ever since last year I've been scouring the internet for a copy of that album. But all of her work that's available on Amazon or iTunes is from much later. The album I sought was from the sixties.

Found a couple of them on Portuguese eBay, but either they were snapped up before I got 'em or the cost was beyond my meager means.

So, last night I googled a unique song name, Têm tres letras o meu nome, and up popped a Portuguese site with a full download of the entire album. For free. Nicely done up with the original album art, from an almost flawless LP, with all the songs neatly labelled.

I hereby make a present of it to the Lizards who like the best of "world music" (= anything that you don't hear on your radio).

Here.

You have to register, and until you do, the site's in Portuguese. Anyone having trouble let me know.

This music is totally worth the effort.

Gulf Oil Leak Update:

Diagnostic testing of the BOP has been done and BP is on schedule for tomorrow’s planned Top Kill by injecting heavy mud. Next they are testing to confirm that they can actually inject mud at all of the 5 entry points that could be used. These tests, over the next 12-24 hours will determine how the top kill will proceed.

The procedure can take from half a day to two days to complete.
BP’s announcement on Tuesday, which I reported here, gives near confirmation of what most people suspect, that a problem with the annular cement around the production casing was a key part of the blowout. BP believes this is occurring between two strings, and not up the main wellbore.

This is good, as that space has become restricted with cement and rocks from the drilling. This would be why they are getting the surprisingly low readings below the BOP and bodes well for the top kill effort. Less pressure to overcome.

The rams on the BOP that did close, are providing some additional choking.
BP estimates a 60% - 70% chance of success, and will try to pump up to 50 barrels per minute of heavy mud in an effort to overcome the well pressure. The idea is, the BOP is partly closed, so if they pump in more mud than can pass through the orifice, then it must then go down the well. If this doesn’t happen, they can inject “junk” to try to clog up the passage up.

In general, copyrights don't enforce themselves and thus enforcement is often not bothered with. The copyright symbol gives one enough cause to stop the infringement, but not collect costs. The registration puts more teeth in the deal, but either way there is a copyright.

Beyond writing a letter to demand your stuff is no longer used without your permission, who has the tens, or hundreds of thousands available to press an infringement through the courts? Thus it is true they are of questionable value and a bit of a joke for us little people.

The Roi told me earlier today he thought BP would have to pump 50=60 barrels of mud per minute for this to work, and he wasn't certain they would be able to do it and get it past the BOP into the well. Lets hope they've figured it out and it works.

Thanks for that detail. What may save the day is that the well is apparently not free-flowing up the bore and the route it is taking is partly obstructed. That and the extent to which the BOP is actually closed. I believe it would be impossible otherwise as they couldn't overcome the pressure and all the mud would flow out the top.

They have a serious amount of mud to give it a go. Other good news is my estimate of the consequences of further damage to the riser above the stack was out of whack. BP claims the increase in flow would only be around 15%.

Exactly. I've filed several copyright, some of which are even registered, along with some patents. But the most I can afford to do by way of enforcement is to send a sternly worded letter. One patent I could win, but would cost about 100K to enforce, something worth a fraction of that.

But registering your copyright is a good idea as the infringer will now fear being held liable for legal costs. It puts some teeth into your letter as they have no idea if you will follow through or not.

We had a poster here; tom moon.

He described being in Viet Nam. He was not where he was supposed to be. He was in a little village on a bend in the road. He positioned himself at a table where he could see what was coming from either direction. He was more worried about being where he was not supposed to be, than he was worried about the VC. He just needed to relax. He got a beer... And he heard an angel singing. In French. On a record. It was Edith Piaf.

I looked up her music. I think I like her, more than her music. But sometimes it hits just right.

They are going to raise liability cap from 75 million to who knows how much and BP will have to pay for the cleanup.

They'll stall, pay themselves huge bonuses and walk away. We'll get stuck with the bill.

One would think that drillers will drill wherever there happens to be oil, and wherever they can get the best tax break. It's not like another business where one strip mall is much the same as another strip mall, neighbourhood notwithstanding. And given that spills from drilling have been so rare that apparently nobody has ever thought of a way to stop one if it happened, the risk of a payout from a very rare event would seem to factor much lower than other criteria such as taxes and presence of oil.

They should just end all American oil exploration and production. That appears the goal. Let's destroy the economy. Why the hesitation?

I don't think holding a company responsible for their screw up instead of the tax payers is a bad idea,

I found the objection:

"Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, is speaking now, objecting to the bill. She said $10 billion in liability would hurt smaller independent companies. Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., scoffed at the "mom and pop" allusion.

UPDATE: Murkowski's objection dashes hope for a quick vote, as unanimous consent would be needed. "I’m really disappointed some of my colleagues decided to block the legislation to hold BP accountable for this environmental disaster," Nelson said in a statement afterward.

In a Tweet he added, "Senator from Alaska just sandbagged my bill."

Origin of 75 million liability cap:

Oil Pollution Act of 1990

The Oil Pollution Act (101 H.R.1465, P.L. 101-380) was passed by the 101st United States Congress to mitigate and prevent civil liability for future oil spills off the coast of the United States; as the U.S. Constitution gives Congress the sole authority to regulate navigable waters. It was written and passed into law after the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill.

H.R.1465
Oil Pollution Prevention, Response, Liability, and Compensation Act of 1989 (Reported in House)

SEC. 102. LIABILITY...

(2) DEFENSES AS TO PARTICULAR CLAIMANTS- There is no liability under subsection (a)--

(A) as to a particular claimant, where the incident is caused, in whole or part, by the gross negligence or willful misconduct of that claimant; or

(B) as to a particular claimant, to the extent that the incident is caused by the negligence of that claimant.

(c) Limits on Liability-

(1) GENERAL RULE- The total of the liability of a responsible party under subsection (a) and any removal costs incurred by, or on behalf of, the responsible party with respect to each incident shall not exceed--

(A) $500 per gross ton or $5,000,000, whichever is greater (but not to exceed $60,000,000), for any tanker;

(B) $300 per gross ton or $500,000, whichever is greater, for any other vessel; or

(C) $75,000,000 for any facility.

re: #407 Renaissance_Man

One would think that drillers will drill wherever there happens to be oil, and wherever they can get the best tax break. It's not like another business where one strip mall is much the same as another strip mall, neighbourhood notwithstanding. And given that spills from drilling have been so rare that apparently nobody has ever thought of a way to stop one if it happened, the risk of a payout from a very rare event would seem to factor much lower than other criteria such as taxes and presence of oil.

Why would they want to drill in the US if there is a $10 billion risk? There are countless other places for them to put the scarce rigs. Including in the same waters, but in Mexico or Cuba. Let's be finished with this, finish driving out oil, industry, doctors and the rest and just live in caves.

I just wanted to come on here and for the record say that it seems Obama is starting to get a number of things right.

While he had an extremely rocky first year, and I have criticized him plentifully on LGF for it, there have been a slew of articles recently that have given me 'hope', and I want to acknowledge them.

The first big signal was part of the White House PR campaign to win back support over Israel. Rahm Emmanuel and Dennis Ross spoke to a group of American Rabbis telling them that the White House had "screwed up the messaging" on Israel.

At that point, I was still cautious. So what? It was all talk.

Next was a whole slew of things which have given me the impression that the administration may be fundamentally readjusting their positions on a number of things.

First we saw Obama agree to ask for $200 million in funding for Israeli missile defense. We also saw the US push for sanctions (although very much watered down... and likely at some cost to get Russia on board) against Iran in spite of the diplomatic maneuvering of Turkey/Brazil and Iran.

Of course, there is also the leak to the NYT about a directive to expand clandestine operations throughout the region. With some more details, JPost reports this includes reconnaissance on potential Iranian targets.

Further, Haaretz reports that Obama has invited Netanyahu to Washington next week, in what is likely a genuine effort to repair the perception of a badly weakened US-Israeli relationship.

On to much less reliable sources, but with a story too big to be entirely wrong, DEBKA reports that Obama has sent the first of a series of aircraft carriers to the Persian Gulf opposite Iran in a massive buildup of military power in the region.

Obama has also come out strongly in support of South Korea in the North/South faceoff currently unfolding, which is much needed, and I have read elsewhere that the administration has come out in support of the Thai government against the Red Shirts, which from my understanding of the Thai situation was the right thing to do.

All in all, at a time when tensions seem to be running higher than normal on many levels, it appears that the administration has realized they have to change some things, and are taking steps to do so.

We aren't entirely in the clear yet, and there is still a lot to criticize on different fronts (Syrian engagement, among other things), but this shows movement in a number of areas and seem quite promising to me. If the Obama administration keeps going in this direction, they may well end up with a solid foreign policy.

We shall have to see.

Now, knowing my luck, just when I post this, Charles'll start a brand new thread!

Nope, and that's the problem. There's 18,000 feet of open hole down. They are shutting down the downhole cameras so you won't see mud and cement flying out of the open riser. They can't control the backside flow.

I cannot imagine this as anything else but a suck along, followed by the "Junk Shot" (which I always associated with Spears or Hilton going Commando) followed by the admission that they will need the offset wells to kill the blowout. Which a lot of us knew from the beginning.

Nope. Those figures on the leak are not supported. Just wild speculation and a vast exageration.

As to the top kill, of course there will be flow out the riser, but the idea is that the flow is passing through an obstruction and once that is overcome, the mud should flow downhole. Also, the pressure readings below the BOP do not indicate a free flow.

The apparent backside flow is believed to be constricted by cement and rocks.

I believe BP is being reasonably with their 60% - 70% probability. It will all come out in the investigation if they are lying. Why would they?

re: #458 tradewind

Walter...what did you think of Sunday's finale?

(here is my stock answer, since I've been asked a number of times)

First off, running through a number of major LOST blogs and reviews, the ending was generally loved by most fans. I'd say it's going at about 90 percent of what I read were intelligent, thought out comments about the over all show and the finale. Of course the percentages could change later, but I suspect that anyone who stuck with this show for 6 seasons worth of episodes probably had most of their "questions" answered or were satisfied by the plot ending.

I wasn't... not in a "they fucked me over" or "I wasted six years of watching" type of not satisfied, but the "dharmic" themed last 10 minutes was not my cup of tea. This show was a lot of sci-fi themes, a lot of mythological themes but it mainly stayed away from overtly spiritual or religious themes.

But, the flip side of that, it's wasn't a copout or just some last minute (or last season) way to wrap up the story. If you were a real fan, you will see where a lot of the "moving on" concepts were foreshadowed even in season one (The Whispers). And as season 6 advanced this past year, more clues were dropped.

Yes, the alternate time line was actually discovered to be one of the "circles" on the dharma styled wheel of life, and it was a holding place for all our characters as they came to grips with their lives, and then, when all the interconnected pieces of there lives finally were resolved, they were ready to "cash in" their karma and move on to the next level. A sort of "karma green room."

Too much spiritual story line thrown in at the end for my total liking. But the character resolves, the full circle, the extremely strong character based writing and story line, it had me in tears during the last episode. Nothing could have happened the way it did if the writers hadn't carefully crafted a wonderful character based story, as each group of characters realized their destiny, you could see how the writers and producers knew just where they were going from early on, and how wonderfully they set up these situations in early seasons in order to have the dove-tailed conclusions of each of the major paired couples.

If you like love stories, if you like strong character based writing, LOST gave you some of the most fulfilling character arcs I've ever seen.

If you care more about sci-fi, mythology and answers to every little detail, you may not of got a totally fulfilling ending, but you still got a damn good one.

Bottom line, they said they knew where they were going, and that was evident by the end, whether you were totally satisfied or not, they kept their promises, which cannot be said for too many episodic TV shows.

Because the tides and currents don't respect international boundaries. Cuba is about to get hit hard by this spill, as will other countries in the area. Will they sue BP? Nope. This accident happened in American waters, so it's our problem and our fault (and we have deeper pockets).

Like it or not, we're all on the same planet. If we ban offshore drilling, so will other countries...eventually. If this accident happened off the south of France, they'd shut down ever rig in the area, plug the wells, and tell the oil companies to get the fuck out of town.

We should do the same, until the oil companies can demonstrate that they have a plan for such events. Trust me, they will.

I have said the same, that there should be a moratorium until they have proven this can't happen again. Absolutely. But there is no need to commit suicide, just tighten up and prove better technology.

And no, no-one sensible will follow us in banning all drilling because of a once in 30 years freak accident that was preventable with current technology. It likely wouldn't have happened in Canada, for example. And after this will not happen again in the US.

Well, I admit I was taken in by the RW talking point about Cuban wells off our coast. There are exactly zero in production, and one well being drilled that is likely to be dry:

"HAVANA -- Despite claims by Cuban officials that everything was going exceedingly well for Cuba's first offshore oil well, officials at Brazilian oil company Brasoil say they believe the $15 million project will ultimately come up dry. "

re: #457 Bagua

I hope you are right. As a former onsite well head geologist working offshore high-pressure wells, I fear you are dead wrong.

It's almost as if Jack died in the original opener, where he's lying on the floor staring at bamboo... but then Ben and Hurley aren't dead?

Seasons 1-5 happened. They are reality and they happened on both the island and off.
What happened on the island in season 6 was also "real" and a part of liner time.
What happened in season 6 in LA was not part of regular time, but was a form of purgatory where the survivors of the crash could wait (work off or on issues) and then move on all together.
That's why Eloise asked Desmond if he was going to take her son with him...she had figured out where they were but she was not ready to move on, she was still making up for killing him and killing his dream of being a musician when he was young.
When jack died on the island he died....

GOP-linked punk rock ministry says executing gays is ‘moral’

You Can Run But You Cannot Hide, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit ministry that brings its hard rock gospel into public schools, has been deepening its long-running ties to the Republican Party of Minnesota. Long a cause célèbre for Rep. Michele Bachmann, who has twice lent her name to the group’s fundraising efforts, You Can Run (YCR) had a booth at the GOP convention in April, and the group’s frontman, Bradlee Dean, reports that gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer recently accepted an invitation to visit with him at Dean’s home. But recent controversial statements by Dean — that Muslim countries calling for the execution of gays and lesbians are “more moral than even the American Christians” — have drawn the ire of some both within and outside the party.

“Muslims are calling for the executions of homosexuals in America,” Dean said on YCR’s May 15 radio show on AM 1280 the Patriot. “This just shows you they themselves are upholding the laws that are even in the Bible of the Judeo-Christian God, but they seem to be more moral than even the American Christians do, because these people are livid about enforcing their laws. They know homosexuality is an abomination.”

Undispersed the crude oil floats on the surface and will coat the beaches and estuaries. Dispersed it is more dilute and less likely to coat and smother. Also, dispersed it will biodegrade faster.

Why would they want to drill in the US if there is a $10 billion risk? There are countless other places for them to put the scarce rigs. Including in the same waters, but in Mexico or Cuba. Let's be finished with this, finish driving out oil, industry, doctors and the rest and just live in caves.

Yay!

Why do we want them to drill in the U.S. if they can cause $10 billion in damage and not be held accountable for it again?

There are 'mom and pop' oil companies?

Sure, next door neighbors to Bagua are small explorers. About six people total in a small office. But they couldn't drill deep like BP and use contractors like BP and most everyone else.

Here's what you can buy with 75 million USD.

Yep, one little old 737NG.

It's cute. I'd paint it different colors, though.

re: #451 Gus 802

Uh, not that it matters much but Walter B. Jones switched parties in 1994.

I'm sure they all thought 75 million dollars was a lot of money back then.

Is Walter B. Jones related to Junie B. Jones?

Okay, but I should hope that they don't have the means to do this kind of damage.

Right. Lets go back to the land. Subsistence farm and get rid of these pesky automobiles. Whatever. And there is no multi-billion dollar damage at this point. BP is spending hundreds of millions to disperse, capture, skim and corral the oil.

We are, in fact, lucky that it is BP that is responsible. They are spending a fortune to correct this, already almost a billion.

So, not likely to completely screw up the Gulf of Mexico.

Ahhh, I liked this:
"We had learned from Christian that the castaways had become — or always were — bonded on a spiritual level, a ''soul cluster'' to use a phrase given to me by a reader whose name I'll credit in a later column when I can dig up the correct e-mail. This cluster was a living thing unto itself, and a thing with great power. It had the ability to create a world, the Sideways world, from which they could meet anew after death and journey together into whatever comes next. Now, up this point, I have written this recap from the perspective and, admittedly, personal bias that the castaways moved into the ''afterlife,'' which I have called ''heaven,'' although it could be called other things, and we must consider that not all of the castaways went to the same ''place.'' But upon reflection, I'm realizing this is probably not the perspective or mythology of the show. Most likely, the castaways returned to the Source, the hub of life, death, and rebirth, and their energy was recycled back into creation. Does anything of their unique person endure and survive? Now that's a conversation! Let's go dutch on coffee one day and have it! "

Southwest used to have a plane painted with the Simpsons. Marge's bouffant went up the tail. Awesome.

No way. It could get ugly but only to a point. If they seal this tomorrow, then all we are looking at is a few dead birds and whatever may make it to the estuaries. Nothing that won't be back to normal within a year, two tops. Not nice, and some temporary impact on fishing, but no more.

The hysteria is nuts, but typical. I've not addressed it yet as it is too powerful at this point.

Wouldn't have been necessary without your original attempt to pin something on eeebbbiiil big bidness luvin conservatives!

A link to the original legislation would have sufficed. Also noting that It enjoyed widespread support, passing the House 375-5 and the Senate by voice vote before conference, and unanimously in both chambers after conference. would have shown it wasn't a left/right,... conservative/ liberal thing

Maybe not then, but it is now.

Sank in the alt-reality, didn't sink in the real one because Jack put the plug in in the nick of time.

I see lots of re-watching ahead.
When you think about it, how cool is it that they created a serialized drama so complex that the finale requires you to re-watch just for research?

Very cool, I was trying to watch it all again ahead of the finale but only got to Season 3. Great the second watch, which is the sign of good theatre in my book. The plot line is very consistent across the years.

Just seeing this today and wanted to say it's great and thank you very much. Question regarding text formatting. If I look at one of your posts, say this one as an example:

You've got that cool, dark background and border around your quoted text. Are we able to produce the same effect using a tag of some sort. Not asking for you to do extra work, just asking if it's there already.

Thanks for all you gear head grinding man, it looks fantastic.
