Video: Sacking the Hack Attack, the Wrap

Environment • Views: 3,001

Environmentalist Peter Sinclair’s new video deals with the now thoroughly debunked and discredited “Climategate” nontroversy, the threats and intimidation directed against climate scientists, and the connections between climate change deniers and the worst elements of the far right — including the neo-Nazis at Stormfront (Google cache link).

Youtube Video

The “Climategate” idiocy confirms the pig-headed anti-science ignorance that now completely dominates the right wing. Despite the fact that every investigation has exonerated the climate scientists of the CRU, wingnuts continue to shriek that “global warming is a hoax, and Climategate proves it!”

And meanwhile, as these blinkered fools obstruct every effort to address the problem before it’s too late, CO2 continues pouring into the Earth’s atmosphere at a rate far greater than the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Gotta wonder how much real overlap there is with these groups, or if they're just banding together for strength.

Gore is not the issue. He will rise or fall on his own. So will anyone who uses or manipulates AGW science to further any agenda, for or against.

AGW is real- and becoming 'more real' as time goes on. The quality of the science is not determined by the pundits.

The only real issue now up for debate is how we ought to deal with matter. Personally, that is one debate I don't believe the AGW community ought to get involved for a myriad of reasons- not the least of which is you can't dance at two weddings.

This is of obvious relevance to the US, since the EU block is the largest economic power and foreign investor in the world. EU countries are also the most likely to adopt strong climate change policies -- though public investment will certainly be reduced in the next few years.

Fareed Zakaria (aka the only possible reason anyone should bother with Newsweek) gamely attempts to educate NeoCons about Iran:

In May, the Milton Friedman Prize for Advancing Liberty was awarded to Akbar Ganji, one of the bravest advocates of nonviolent agitation and secular democracy for Iran. Ganji was jailed for six years in Evin Prison, mostly in solitary confinement, for his writings against the government. In his acceptance speech, Ganji explained that U.S. foreign policy does have an impact on Iran's freedom movement but not quite in the sense that neoconservatives mean.

"Even entertaining the possibility of a military strike, especially when predicated on the nuclear issue," Ganji said, "is beneficial to the fundamentalists who rule Iran. As such, the idea itself is detrimental to the democratic movement in my country."

Personally, I am not necessarily against hack attacks on public institutions. Especially ones that seem to feel themselves above public scrutiny.

Let's take a test case: Tomorrow, some unknown group releases hacked emails from the RNC showing who's getting paid for what: Sarah Palin, the "Judge", Glenn Beck.

I would not weep for their disrupted privacy.

However, if the emails in question can be shown to be harmless, I would discount them. 1/3 of one cent on the dollar.

RNC expenditure & DNC expenditure reports are freely available to anyone via the FEC.gov website. Palin, Napolitano & Beck aren't likely to be there. Look to the 501c4s for the real answers. Yep. On one hand, energy independence and clean energy are so related that they're not permitted to conjugate...so we should get on with it for selfish reasons and then we can ask 3rd world countries to please stop burning shit, which is responsible for ~50% of the AGW.

On the other hand, our actions now won't pay off for a while...so we also need to get about the business of improving our ability to sustain our lives in a different climate.

A senior military official tells ABC News that Rolling Stone broke journalistic ground rules established for the magazine’s profile of the general by publishing comments that occurred during what McChrystal’s aides thought were off-the-record sessions that would not be reported. The official said the magazine’s claim that there were no ground rules for the interview and profile was an “absurd statement.”

As I said earlier, I am glad to see McChrystal gone. But I had also posted that his "on background" statements had been published and thought I'd post this tidbit as follow up. Certainly there might have been guys under McChrystal who might have implied that it was OK to publish the other wise off limits stuff - there were many under McChrystal who wanted him gone.

It's like Godwin's law for AGW threads, the longer an AGW thread continues, the likelier that Al Gore's "hypocrisy" and/or his infidelity will be brought up to "disprove" AGW.

Regardless of his matrimonial difficulties or the size of his mansion, can anyone really deny that Al Gore is a hero of AGW? I would venture to say tha his "An Inconvenient Truth" did as much or more to convince the lay public that AGW is a serious issue than any 50 scientific papers gathering dust on a shelf in some ivory tower.

It's called "damage control." Take one of the world's worst polluters down a few pegs or even off the board and you limit the impact compared to if you just say "Frak it, the ChiComs and Indians are just gonna pick up the slack" and plow onward.

Interestingly, the Chinese are starting to see another feature of industrialism:

China Strikes Hit Toyota, Honda

In the latest in a string of labor disputes at factories across China, Toyota was forced to halt production yesterday at an assembly plant because of a strike at Denso, a parts supplier in southern China. The Denso plant also supplies Honda factories, which may also run out if the strike continues, a Honda spokesman tells MSNBC.

Workers at the Denso factory are demanding a pay raise from about $180 a month to about $270. "This company makes lots of money and should share the profits," one of the striking employees says. Such strikes present a dilemma to the Chinese government, which has promised to raise factory wages but is eager to downplay news of protests. The disputes have arisen as young workers migrate from rural areas to factory jobs seeking a place in the growing urban middle class, then find low wages and undesirable working conditions. China's official trade union calls the strikes a key test of the country's stability.

As it should have. The movie is actually very good, and packed with hard facts about global warming. I saw it for the first time recently, after reading hundreds of right wing attacks and smears against it, and was very pleasantly surprised at how accurate and factual it was.

But if you think "Al Gore is a hero of AGW," you're dreaming. He helped bring the issue to people's attention, but he is not a scientist and he gets no more credit than he deserves.

Well giving information "on background" is like doing business on credit terms in developing countries - when you run out of leverage they stop paying you. A journalist will publish info given "on background" knowing that s/he will never get access to that person again. They do it when they know they will likely never need access to that person again anyway.

As for access to the Army - the Army needs journalists more than journalists need the Army. So all will be forgiven.

John was in the fertilized egg business. He had several hundred young layers (hens), called 'pullets,' and ten roosters to fertilize the eggs.

He kept records, and any rooster not performing went into the soup pot and was replaced. This took a lot of time, so he bought some tiny bells and attached them to his roosters.

Each bell had a different tone, so he could tell from a distance, which rooster was performing. Now, he could sit on the porch And fill out an efficiency report by just listening to the bells.

John's favorite rooster, old Butch, was a very fine specimen, but this morning he noticed old Butch's bell hadn't rung at all!

When he went to investigate, he saw the other roosters were busy chasing pullets, bells-a-ringing, but the pullets, hearing the roosters coming, could run for cover.

To John's amazement, old Butch had his bell in his beak, so it couldn't ring. He'd sneak up on a pullet, do his job and walk on to the next one.

John was so proud of old Butch, he entered him in the Renfrew County Fair and he became an overnight sensation among the judges. The result was the judges not only awarded old Butch the No Bell Piece Prize but they also awarded him the Pulletsurprise as well.

Clearly old Butch was a politician in the making.

Who else but a politician could figure out how to win two of the most highly coveted awards on our planet by being the best at sneaking up on the populace and screwing them when they weren't paying attention.

Vote carefully next year, the bells are not always audible.

Would be strange to have rain that smelled like oil.

Videographer: It’s raining oil in Louisiana

Because oil generally doesn't evaporate, it shouldn't be possible, under normal circumstances, for it to rain down from the skies. But Charlie Paxton of the National Weather Service tells WTSP in Tampa that "a water spout could pick up some oil and carry it a short distance."

Another possibility is that the dispersant BP has been using to thin the oil, Corexit, may have made some of it light enough to be absorbed in the atmosphere.

It's an obsession which works alongside other pre-existing conditions. There are people out there that keep track of this site almost 24/7. So many that they're able to get screen shots of posts that were either deleted or disemvoweled.

Some of them end up knowing intimate details of your life. Depending on what you reveal here. I was looking yesterday and go a laugh out of one blog that said I was an Argentine Peronist Progressive. I am barely familiar with Peron other than that my father was around some of the protests during his time in power and he wasn't even involved.

Peronism, and I had to look it up, is a combination of social democracy with nationalism. It's not progressivism. It's also interesting to note that Peron was responsible for allowing the most Jewish immigrantion into Argentina then any other South American country -- totaling 200,000.

To further display the type of ignorance is the simple fact that there are left wing Peronists and right wing Personists. Accuracy isn't the point and their objective is to simply fling half-witted insults that aren't even correct.

I never grasped the concept of enemy in this medium. This thread could be an example. I'll admit that I was engaged in squabbling on the top of this thread but I don't consider the people that I was opposed with to be my enemy. I save enemy for real life threats.

Who in the world are they to say anyone isn't conservative enough. From what I understand being conservative is more than ideology. Part of being conservative also means that one does not act as they do. Or as in the dictionary definition, "marked by or relating to traditional norms of taste, elegance, style, or manners." They fail at being traditionally conservative in manner.

Talk about moral bankruptcy.

You're right about the accuracy thing. I visited the stalker blogs before deciding to sign up here, so coming in I knew they are keen to find personal info on LGF posters, which is why I'm remaining behind several layers of identity obfuscation. It's not foolproof, but... well, never mind. ;o)

The sense of entitlement part makes a little bit of sense, but only if I stretch my logic wayyyy past its normal boundaries. I mean, Charles built this site on his own, from the ground up—it's 100% his own baby.

They came & stayed because it interested them and they got something from it. For free. Then they flounced or got banned. How is that Charles' fault?

Sure, he wields the ban hammer, but I'm not buying the stories about him banning people for no reason or for simply disagreeing with him—I've been following LGF for enough months (including prior to joining) to know that is patently untrue.

The one thing they all don't seem to understand is that you should expect to be thrown out of just about anywhere for being an asshole.

Oh excuse me the case for AGW is settled and anybody who questions it is brainless. How about the founder of the weather channel suing Al Gore over AGW claims? I guess he's brainless too.
If you disagree with the enlightened left you need to be "re-educated", it's a brave new world baby and it's coming your way. Is there anything we can do to make it happen sooner? Al Gore is nobody's "head guru." But he sure makes a great right wing boogeyman, popping up and saying boo! in every discussion about global warming.

Yeah, Gore's pretty worthless as a spokesman on this issue, because nobody but nobody on the right (and probably in the middle either) will ever be persuaded by him. He's just preaching to the choir. "An Inconvenient Truth" didn't help matters at all. What might have worked would have been to just keep pushing the dry hard facts in documentary after documentary, with distinguished looking scientific talking heads and anonymous narrators. Focusing on the potential for crop failure and global famine rather than listing a whole host of disasters (drowning coastlines, superstorms, etc.) might have helped as well.

But we are faced with such profound ignorance about science, I'm not sure anything will work to wake people up. I was chatting with a friend in Louisiana yesterday and she was expressing her doubts about the predictions, saying "They were saying there wouldn't be anything south of I-10 by 2010, and that hasn't happened." I replied, "The thing is, you can't say that just because it hasn't happened exactly when they predicted, it will never happen. Science improves all the time, gathers more evidence and data, becomes more accurate in its predictions." She said, "Well, they were saying this 15 years ago (like that was a long time)," then said she really didn't feel like debating today.

People don't understand that science being off by 15, 50, 75 years on a matter like climate change is actually not that huge a deal, but now we have a "boy who cried wolf" situation. By the time people realize the scientists were right, it'll be way too late.

Phil Jones has acknowledged the it may have been as warm during the medieval period. So where's the CO2? Besides admitting there has been no global warming for the last 15 years.
How about appointing more czars or grant amnesty to illegals so the "democratic party" can maintain their foot on the neck of the American people.

Oh wow. You hit on every denialist talking point there...I think you may have set a record.

Unsurprisingly, this one is also a religious fanatic and apparently an End Times believer.
