Glenn Beck: It All Started to Go Wrong With the Civil War

Wingnuts • Views: 3,769

Yes, this is the second post about Glenn “Manbaby” Beck today, because on his radio show he managed to top his hero-worship of Joe McCarthy, by saying that race relations went wrong “in the lead-up to the Civil War.”

Because according to Beck, before that “we were moving on the right track.” Un-freaking-believable.

“The things that have happened in this country, where it really started to go wrong, was in the lead-up to the Civil War. And it became politicized, and it was all about slavery. Before then, we were moving on the right track.”

As bizarre as this opinion may seem, this is simply another front in the right’s ongoing campaign of historical revisionism. You may remember that at CPAC 2010, one of the workshops was titled “Friend or Foe? Abraham Lincoln on Liberty,” sponsored by Ron Paul’s Campaign for Liberty organization. The Ron Paulians, aided by racist neo-Confederate throwbacks like Lew Rockwell and Robert Stacy McCain, have been pushing the demonization of Abraham Lincoln to the right wing for years, and it’s beginning to go mainstream.

Beck should be congratulated. He has clearly stolen the brass ring from Rush Limbaugh in the carnival of the wingnuts.

Calling Beck a loon is an insult to loons.

Bizarre as it seems to reality-based people, Beck's message will probably resonate well with those who are steeped in the revisionist traditions of The Lost Cause.

Nah. Sen Byrd was just an ordinary racist. West Virginia made a big point of not being a Lost Cause state.

14 b_snark  Fri, Jun 25, 2010 2:25:18pm

Things were going in the right direction, blacks and whites were viewed as equals in war, given full honours when they died, and in church, they got to sit down and everything - as long as those durn blacks remained slaves.

By now, they would probably be allowed to ride anywhere on the bus, and maybe even considered more than 3/5ths of a man, but they would still be slaves.

Logic is not strong in this one.

15 Nimed  Fri, Jun 25, 2010 2:25:19pm

A pity the country's harmony was broken by such a trifling matter.

This is all just his dry humor that we don't get.
That blacks had no issues with being slaves, it was all the fault of those bleeding heart liberal commie abolitionists.

Beck is saying that slavery was really no big deal.

Based on one assessment of George Washington and an anecdotal story of one church congregation. A rather limited set of evidence.

No doubt Glenn Beck is speaking to his congregation.

That would appear to be the case. Heck, black veterans got full honors when they were buried in their segregated cemeteries and we had an integrated church somewhere so things were great until some crazed agitator decided to spin a trifle like chattel slavery into an issue.

That is almost literally what he said, so I won't be using a sarc tag this time.

21 Dante41  Fri, Jun 25, 2010 2:27:34pm

I know this has been leveled at people undeserving of it over the years, but i have to ask it now:

Why does Glenn Beck hate America?

I mean, why does he hate the concept of freedom and justice for all? Why does he try to undo nearly a century and a half of progress? Why does he want to tear asunder this union and cast brother against brother once again?

Why does he pine for this nation's darkest hour?

Baloney. For all of Byrd's faults, he has very publicly, and repeatedly apologized for his racist past, and his actions during the past 20-odd years back it up.
Compare this to the multitude of people on the right wing, who quite honestly are blowing the dogwhistle almost as loudly and frequently as they did during the 1960s.

Demonizing Lincoln! I can't let that go. The man was a saint. Here is what some of his contemporaries said of him:

This is from the book “Harper’s Pictorial History of the Civil War” (Fairfax Press, republished; originally published 1866. Authored by Alfred H. Gurnsey and Henry M. Alden, editors of Harper’s 1856 to 1869, and 1869 to 1919 respectively).

In two posts; it's a bit long:

When the Republican National Convention assembled at Chicago on the 16th of May, 1860, it was almost universally assumed that William H. Seward would be nominated for President. On the first ballot he stood far ahead of Lincoln; on the second he was three votes ahead; but on the third Lincoln stood fifty one votes ahead of Seward, and his nomination was then made unanimous. The people were scarcely as yet familiar with the name of Lincoln. They soon learned that he was an awkward, ungainly man, one who had risen from obscurity by perseverance, a man shrewd in debate and plain in speech, and who was known simply as “Honest old Abe”. But this awkward, plain man, without culture, and without that despotism of genius which commands admiration, God had taken by the hand, and had chosen as the champion of the republic at the most critical moment of its history. His very election was made the pretext for rebellion. But he accomplished nobly and wisely his great mission.

69 Ojoe  Fri, Jun 25, 2010 2:41:14pm

(continued)

Against the violence of rebellion he opposed the firmness of national authority, supported by the strong arm of patriots. Thus he won the confidence of the people. He had no love of arbitrary power, and indulged in no radical or revolutionary theories which could tempt him to such use of power. He was a conservative in the best sense of the term: not a conservator of party, but of national integrity. Thus he was better fitted to accomplish his divine mission. For it must be remembered that God, the great Disposer of all events, works not with the haste of man. Tares and wheat He lets grow together until the harvest, lest upon uprooting the tares upon impulse He uproot the wheat also. While Lincoln never vacillated, he was never in haste. He hesitated long before he issued his proclamation of emancipation. He laid it away, and weeks passed before he signed it — and then he acted in accordance with a solemn vow which he had made to God. Even after he issued this document he doubted weather the system of gradual and compensated emancipation might not be more just and better for the slaves. He looked on every side of every question, and was therefore slow in reaching conclusions. In Lincoln thought and prayer were mingled, and thus the final word which came in answer to thought and prayer sounded solemnly in his ears like the commandment of God. Following that voice, he had no doubt as to results: it was, “This do, and thou shalt be saved.”

In no life, perhaps, more that in Lincoln’s, did the outward appearance counterdict the inward fact and experience. A casual acquaintance with him would lead to the inference that he looked upon every subject only as the occasion of a joke or the point for an anecdote. But those who came nearer to him, or who carefully study the man, can not thus judge. Upon no man ever fell the weight of sadder care than upon him. Day by day he labored under a burden which he could not lay aside. Thus to his intimate friends he always seemed weary and sorrowful. In an equal degree his external awkwardness curiously contrasted with an inward grace and sweetness not common among men. He was as gentle as a woman. His compassion was infinite. As the hour of victory approached, when the enemies of the nation would lie prostrate at his feet, the desire nearest to his heart was to heal the wounds which the strife left open and bleeding, to pardon and restore. Thus, when the summer of triumph came, its glory wrapped him all about. He saw a nation restored, a race emancipated. He saw the seal of God set upon all which he had done. He looked upon a people inspired with solemn joy, and as their souls went up in anthems, his rose supreme above them all, crowned with an aureola such as never graced the head of Caesar or king.

re: #21 Dante41

I know this has been leveled at people undeserving of it over the years, but i have to ask it now:

Why does Glenn Beck hate America?

I mean, why does he hate the concept of freedom and justice for all? Why does he try to undo nearly a century and a half of progress? Why does he want to tear asunder this union and cast brother against brother once again?

Why does he pine for this nation's darkest hour?

Cuz it makes for great ratings, bay-bee!

Costner cleanup device gets high marks from BP

It was treated as an oddball twist in the otherwise wrenching saga of the BP oil spill when Kevin Costner stepped forward to promote a device he said could work wonders in containing the spill's damage. But as Henry Fountain explains in the New York Times, the gadget in question — an oil-separating centrifuge — marks a major breakthrough in spill cleanup technology. And BP, after trial runs with the device, is ordering 32 more of the Costner-endorsed centrifuges to aid the Gulf cleanup.

The "Waterworld" actor has invested some $20 million and spent the past 15 years in developing the centrifuges. He helped found a manufacturing company, Ocean Therapy Solutions, to advance his brother's research in spill cleanup technology. In testimony before Congress this month, Costner walked through the device's operation—explaining how it spins oil-contaminated water at a rapid speed, so as to separate out the oil and capture it in a containment tank:

David Barton
Master of myth and misinformation

In 1991 Barton addressed the Rocky Mountain Bible Retreat of Pastor Pete Peters' Scriptures for America, a group that espouses the racist "Christian Identity" theology. Advocates of this bizarre dogma insist that white Anglo-Saxons are the "true" chosen people of the Bible and charge that today's Jews are usurpers. Aside from being a virulent anti-Semite, Peters has advocated the death penalty for homosexuals. According to the Anti-Defamation League, other speakers at the event included white supremacist leader and 1992 presidential candidate James "Bo" Gritz, a leader of the radical and increasingly violent militia movement, and Malcolm Ross, a Holocaust denier from Canada. In November of that same year, Barton spoke at Kingdom Covenant College in Grants Pass, Oregon, another "Christian Identity" front group with ties to Peters.4

Asked to explain these actions, Barton's reply amounted to a not very creative "I didn't know they were Nazis" dodge.

Like the eejits who explain how women would naturally have gotten equal pay and shit like that without those man-hating feminists acting out like that.

I've run across hard core libertarians at airports (or were they Larouche supporters?) who argued (albeit politely b/c they were in public) that only land owners should vote and women were best suited for child rearing exclusively. Kyl, now says his comments about Obama were a bit out of context.

Kyl, of course, had a small spat with the White House last week over comments he made at a town-hall meeting. Kyl, responding to a voter’s question, detailed a recent one-on-one conversation he had with the president. “They are holding [border security] hostage” over hopes for comprehensive immigration reform, Kyl said at the forum.

Kyl tells us that the comments were “taken a bit out of context,” and that the “they” he was referring to was the Left, “the president’s base,” and not the administration. “I did not try to start a fight. This meeting happened a month ago and we were talking in the context of his political problems. He was talking about how they think that if we secure the border, you guys [Republicans] won’t have the incentive to work on comprehensive immigration reform.”

Kyl.

I almost can't believe what I'm seeing in that one. David Barton, who gave speeches to white supremacist organizations, promoting the idea that things were just fine between whites and blacks before the Civil War.

This is Stormfront territory.

David Barton? Figures.

He was also one of the people in the forefront spearheading the Texas Board of Education's revisionism of science, social studies and history books.

How a group of Texas conservatives is rewriting your kids’ textbooks.

In keeping with the makeup of the board, three of the six people appointed were right-wing ideologues, among them Peter Marshall, a Massachusetts-based preacher who has argued that California wildfires and Hurricane Katrina were God’s punishment for tolerating gays, and David Barton, former vice chairman of the Texas Republican Party. Both men are self-styled historians with no relevant academic training—Barton’s only credential is a bachelor’s degree in religious education from Oral Roberts University—who argue that the wall of separation between church and state is a myth.

Racer X's solution to illegal immigrant problem:

To those still waiting in line - thank you for your patience. We will get to you.

To those who are here illegally and want to stay - welcome to America! If you would like to stay and become a citizen there are a few conditions:

1. You broke our law. There is a penalty. A fine no greater than say, $5,000 to be paid off over the next 10 years should cover expenses.

2. Something led you to flee the conditions in your home country. You are welcome to apply to become an American citizen. Pledge allegiance to America and we will assist you if needed. This is your home now. We are all your fellow citizens. Welcome!

3. You are on probation for the next 5 years. Engage in criminal activity and all previous agreements are null and void. You will be deported to your previous country of origin.

This applies to anyone of any color, race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation or political views. No one is singled out. I think this is a fair start.

BTW, I noticed at the Doctor's office today (the teen has bronchitis) that they had HGTV on instead of FOXNews and the same at the dealership last week.
These are both places that used to run FOX all day on the Tv'.

I've noticed that too.

On a side note - I was at Lowe's hardware the other day and there were several people screaming at each other in the parking lot. One guy was barking about Obama and Tea Parties, and a lady was screaming back about 'quit watching Foxnews'. I just cracked up and walked away.

True dat. Just search Harry Reid on Obama, or even more astonishingly, Joe the Veep, for their off-the-cuff remarks in the area of race, which, said by a Republican, would have resulted in the offender's removal from Congress. Fortunately, since they were democrats, ergo inherently incapable of racism, there was no mens rea assumed, only poor phrasing.

Seriously I am so sick of people who romanticize the old South like Beck and bash Lincoln. Was Lincoln perfect, no but at least he wasn't a crazy bigot like many in the old Confederacy were. People like Beck conveinently ignore the fact that the Confederates often killed or returned black soldiers captured in battle. And of course there was also a strong strain of anti-Catholicism, anti-Semitism, and other prejudices back then. But to people like Beck I am sure that doesn't matter since he has shown himself to admire some pretty unsavorly figures.

Originally from the northern LA area here.

Outside of the gambling casinos in Shreveport, there isn't a heck of a lot of "tourist" type attractions in northern Louisiana. If you're in the eastern part of the state, then Vicksburg, MS is a good spot to visit, as it was the site of a major Civil War battle, and they have a national monument set up there.

I'm not much of a Dunie. I recommend National Lampoon's parody, Doon the Dessert Planet for those who waded through the original and weren't impressed. The glossary is especially hilarious, since it perfectly mimics the contrived terminology and jargon of the original. In the original, for example, "chaumurky" is poison administered in drink, while "chaumas" is poison administered in food. In the parody, "chaubakky" is poison administered in chewing tobacco, while "chauvez" is poison administered in fruit.
It is a good companion piece to Harvard Lampoon's Bored of the Rings. This follows the dubious adventures of such readily recognizable characters as Frito and Dildo Bugger and GoodGulf Greyteeth the Good Wizard.

Beck is Partially Right - "WE" were moving on the "Right Track" until the invention of the Cotton 'Gin, the "Cotton Economy" etc.
What Beck leaves out is that Military Necessity - for both His Majesty, George III's Troops and that of the Continentals required the enlistment of African Origin Soldiers. Both sides treated those soldiers with honor after the war for the most part, so long as they were active soldiers.
When "PUSH came to SHOVE" in the American "Unpleasantness" of 1861-65, even the CSA recruited Blacks to "The Cause." - some of whom fought heroically at Richmond for a regime that wanted them enslaved forever.
No matter what, the "Buffalo Soldier" fought honorably and well for all that would give them the chance and a hope for a better future. That - IS the History - AND - It is TRUE. -S-

Why does he pine for this nation's darkest hour?

Because then he will be a Hero™. A person to be honored like Jefferson and Washington. A man who changed America for the better and set it on the road to Heaven on Earth.

I don't think it can get that bad again--there was a lot of widespread shallow racism, and less of the deep, murderous, kind. We can't even tell what the ratio is today, let alone 60 yrs ago. Here in AL, the kids just seem to be a lot less infected.

There seems to have been a volunteer group formed early tin the war, among New Orleans freemen. Their offer to serve was refused. Most on-line sources are suspect--this seems straight:

The operative word is "fought." Yes, there were some slaves who were forced to work for the Confederate Army, but they never actually fought anybody.

The reason why racists like to insist that blacks "fought" for the Confederacy is to give people the false impression that blacks enjoyed being slaves and wanted it to continue, so much they would fight for it. It's a lie.

re: #105 albusteve

BO does not secure the borders, or file suit against sanctuary cities...both in direct violation of US law...big whoop eh?...everybody does it right?

And Bush did any of those things? No, he just left everything for the next guy to fix. How about we give him till the end of one term to see what he accomplishes. Also, the republicans are part of congress, even if they don't act like it. They have to take some responsibility along with the ineffective democrats. They are the legislators.

As some commenters on mediamatters opined, Randy Newman said it better in 1972:

Sail Away (Randy Newman song)

Lyrics and interpretation

"Sail Away" is representative of Newman's trademark unconventional and clever approach to songwriting: it takes the form of "come on" or "pitch" from an American slave trader to potential slaves. The slaver attempts to convince his listeners to climb aboard his ship and "sail away" with him to America (specifically Charleston), which he portrays as a land of happiness and plenty.

In America you'll get food to eat
Won't have to run through the jungle
And scuff up your feet
You'll just sing about Jesus and drink wine all day
It's great to be an American

Ain't no lions or tigers ain't no mamba snake
Just the sweet watermelon and the buckwheat cake
Ev'rybody is as happy as a man can be
Climb aboard little wog sail away with me

CHORUS
Sail away sail away
We will cross the mighty ocean into Charleston Bay
Sail away-sail away
We will cross the mighty ocean into Charleston Bay

In America every man is free
To take care of his home and his family
You'll be as happy as a monkey in a monkey tree
You're all gonna be an American

CHORUS

In the video, the banner overhead reads Old Grey Whistle Test.
Genius.
