Alaska must release Palin e-mails by May 31, state AG declares
The state of Alaska has until May 31 to release about 25,000 pages of e-mails from former Gov. Sarah Palin and senior members of her administration, the state attorney general declared Wednesday.
As we reported last month, by May the delays in dealing with public records from the Palin administration will have stretched out longer than the Palin administration itself. She was governor for 966 days. By May 31, the request from msnbc.com for the official records will be 986 days old. State regulations usually require records to be made available within 10 days, but state officials said they were overwhelmed by the volume of the e-mails.
Officials in the governor’s office asked the attorney general to approve a 15th delay in the process, until May 31. That request was approved Wednesday by the new attorney general, John J. Burns.

Remember:
An important pillar of the bilateral relationship remains U.S. security and economic assistance to Egypt, which expanded significantly in the wake of the Egyptian-Israeli Peace Treaty in 1979. U.S. military aid to Egypt totals over $1.3 billion annually. In addition, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has provided over $28 billion in economic and development assistance to Egypt since 1975. Early assistance focused on infrastructure, health, food supply, and agriculture. The Commodity Import Program, through which USAID provided hundreds of millions of dollars in financing to enable the Egyptian private sector to import U.S. goods, was one of the largest and most popular USAID programs. Current programs focus on trade and investment; utilities; education; healthier, planned families; natural resources; democracy and governance; and other programs supported by the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI).

Hey, Its Italy.
Silvio Berlusconi defended by Italian porn star
The debate raging in Italy about Silvio Berlusconi’s alleged taste for teenage girls and prostitutes has taken a surreal turn, after the country’s top porn star weighed in with high praise for the prime minister. “The truth is,” said Rocco Siffredi, “that Italians are proud of someone like Berlusconi who is 74, loves sex and has a good sex life – and I don’t just mean working-class Italians.”
Siffredi, 46, was named by an adult film industry listing as one of the world’s 50 top porn stars and is now a celebrity, appearing on Italian chat shows. He told the Observer that, if Berlusconi can avoid jail for allegedly paying a teenager for sex and pressuring the police into covering it up, he will be forgiven by Italian voters. “In any other country he would have been forced out years ago, but here he gets away with it,” said Siffredi.

Ugandan gay rights activist David Kato found murdered
David Kato, the advocacy officer for Sexual Minorities Uganda, was bludgeoned to death in Mukono, Kampala, yesterday afternoon. Witnesses saw a man fleeing the scene in a car, and police are investigating.
Along with other Ugandan gay activists, Kato had reported increased harassment since 3 January, when a high court judge granted a permanent injunction against the Rolling Stone tabloid newspaper, preventing it from identifying homosexuals in its pages.
Late last year, Kato had been pictured on the front page of an issue carrying the headline “Hang Them”. He was one of the three complainants in the court case.
“Since the ruling, David said people had been harassing him, and warning they would ‘deal with him,’” Julian Pepe Onziema, a close friend and fellow gay rights activist, said.

Hi everyone! Sarah Palin here…
I’m so sorry I was late for both earlier threads about me, but I just had to drop in and say hi and tell you all that I’m so happy you’re all noticing that I’m going to be such a great President!
You know, I’ve noticed a lot of people on the left bashing Michelle for saying a lot of true things that just aren’t accepted by the left, like that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson tried to end slavery after signing the Constitution back in the days of the Congressional Constitutional times. But then it was Abrams Lincoln who actually did it after signing the Declaration of Independence because he was a Republican, and Republicans were always against that sort of thing even back then.
Well, I just wanted to point out that a lot of people on the left have real problems accepting these basic facts about the history of our great country, because they really hate America, don’t they? I mean, look at Obama’s speech about Sputnik. Why would he mention Sputnik? That’s such a WTF moment because it’s like what is he…a communist or something? I’m just asking because who else would mention Sputnik? I mean, only communists talk about decadent techno euro bands like that anyway, right? Wasn’t that what Reagan was against? I don’t really remember it, but I’m pretty sure that when Sputnik became a name we heard of, Reagan was there in the White House trying to fight that kind of socialist entertainment agenda. Right? Right America?
You know, I’m just pointing this all out to make sure that people understand my point of view and the point of view of friends of mine like Michelle and the rest of the Tea Party, because it’s based on facts - facts that the left won’t ever accept because it makes them look as stupid as they are.
But there’s just no understanding them sometimes, is there? Right?
You betcha!
Anyway, I just want to thank you all for your awesome support and let you know that I’m still out here fighting for you and the American way. God bless you all, America!

New research points to earlier human migration out of Africa, 125,000 years ago
For decades, the consensus scientific opinion has held that anatomically modern humans first migrated out of Africa some 60,000 years ago, heading north into the eastern Mediterranean region and then on to Europe and Asia.
But new research released Thursday paints a very different picture. Similarly identifiable humans left Africa as early as 125,000 years ago, it says, and wandered east into the Arabian peninsula, parts of which were then wet and lush.
From there, the researchers report in a paper in the journal Science, the people who may well have been our true ancestors later headed north and on into Eurasia.

Check out the comments on that video at RCP. That site used to be respectable, now it’s a lot like redstate or foxnews. Anyway, most of the commenters think Obama really is going to tell them what to eat (just like he’s “taking our guns away”) and, even more hilariously, they cite the constitution because no provision therein specifically gives the prez authority to control our food supply. More Palinites proud of being ignorant.

Presidents make healthy lifestyle suggestions all the time. Think about the Presidents Council on Fitness and all the hoopla surrounding that. The president has lots of different roles, not just C-in-C. These kinds of things are largely ceremonial and don’t take up much time. Ultimately harmless.
And after all, we’re the fattest nation in the history of the planet. Tens of millions of Americans have compromised quality of life due to obesity; millions more will die prematurely because of it. So, yeah, it’s important.

Quantum Entanglement Could Stretch Across Time
two physicists have mathematically described how this spooky effect, called entanglement, could also bind particles across time.
If their proposal can be tested, it could help process information in quantum computers and test physicists’ basic understanding of the universe.
“You can send your quantum state into the future without traversing the middle time,” said quantum physicist S. Jay Olson of Australia’s University of Queensland, lead author of the new study.
In ordinary entanglement, two particles (usually electrons or photons) are so intimately bound that they share one quantum state — spin, momentum and a host of other variables — between them. One particle always “knows” what the other is doing. Make a measurement on one member of an entangled pair, and the other changes immediately.
Physicists have figured out how to use entanglement to encrypt messages in uncrackable codes and build ultrafast computers. Entanglement can also help transmit encyclopedias’ worth of information from one place to another using only a few atoms, a protocol called quantum teleportation.
In a new paper posted on the physics preprint website arXiv.org, Olson and Queensland colleague Timothy Ralph perform the math to show how these same tricks can send quantum messages not only from place to place, but from the past to the future.
The equations involved defy simple mathematical explanation, but are intuitive: If it’s impossible to describe one particle without including the other, this logically extends to time as well as space.“If you use our timelike entanglement, you find that [a quantum message] moves in time, while skipping over the intermediate points,” Olson said. “There really is no difference mathematically. Whatever you can do with ordinary entanglement, you should be able to do with timelike entanglement.”

I just spent 10 days in Europe… I assure you, they are trying real hard to play catch up.

So Simon & Schuster basically implied that “O” was written by some sort of insider within the Obama administration who had insights into his inner thoughts, but then it turns out:
McCain Aide Is Said to Be Author of ‘O’
Mark Salter is the author of “O,” the recently published roman à clef about a fictional presidential campaign, according to a growing consensus of reports in Page Six of The New York Post, which first named him as the author last week, and from Mark Halperin of Time magazine, who said this morning that Mr. Salter, a campaign aide to John McCain, undoubtedly wrote the book.
…
Simon & Schuster has successfully whipped up a media frenzy around the novel, touted as an insider’s account of a fictional presidential campaign. Mr. Salter, a veteran of national politics, fits the insider description, but perhaps not the spirit of the publisher’s breathless description of the author of “O” as someone who “has been in the room with Barack Obama.”
From a NYT review of the book last week:
… an executive at the book’s publisher says, in an online note, that he hopes this book may “offer some resonant truths about what President Obama is really thinking,” the title character turns out to be a snarkily drawn cartoon too: a conceited narcissist whose inner life consists of gripes about his opponents, frustration with his job, daydreams about golf, and self-congratulatory pats on his own back, combined with put-downs of the country at large.Anonymous has President O thinking, “This is who he had always expected to be, this competent, cool, commanding leader who was always a step ahead of his rivals, a step ahead of the country, if truth be told.” O complains that the Tea Party is a mob of “conspiracy nuts, immigrant haters, vengeful Old Testament types, publicity hustlers, and people who just have way too much time on their hands,” united by “their sneering self-righteousness and burning hatred for me.” And he believes “his gift as a public speaker was greater and rarer than the one commonly attributed to him, his ability to inspire people”: “He enlightened them. He made them understand, without making them feel threatened, that America could be a better society, that Americans could be more just, braver, wiser than they had been.”
This president is described as fantasizing, in very bad romance-novel prose, about running against a Sarah Palin-like character referred to as “the Barracuda”: “There she was, baby on her hip, thick hair piled up high, chin out, defiant, taunting, flaunting that whole lusty librarian thing, sweet and savory, mother and predator, alluring and dangerous.” He’s also described as agreeing to go with an early, highly negative campaign against his 2012 opponent even though it completely undermines his image as being “the antidote to relentless partisanship”: He “would have to battle for nine miserable months to damage another man’s reputation while mostly relying on events to improve his own.”
O’s hypocrisy and arrogance, along with improbable plot developments, make it hard not to suspect that the author of this novel is a Republican sympathizer — or at the very least someone very disillusioned with President Obama.

There’s a new scam going on in Paris, I say new, because I hadn’t seen it before, I suspect it’s as old as the hills.
A young woman will pass you, bend over, appear to pick something off the ground, and then come to you with a “gold” ring, asking you if you dropped it. The idea of the scam is you may actually think you have a chance to claim a gold ring that is not even you, her idea is she will ask for a tip for finding it. She gets a tip and you get faux gold of course.
So, I was thinking, I swear, I’m going to be prepared the next time I travel to Paris. The next time this happens to me, I’m going to take out a small handfull of faux gold rings, poke around, count and tell her “nope… not one of mine”

Roll Call: Pence to Announce He’s Not Running for President
A former operative for Rep. Mike Pence says the Indiana Republican won’t be running for president. Pence plans to reveal the decision about his political future Thursday, multiple outlets reported, and former Pence Political Director Jerry Alexander told Roll Call that the Congressman isn’t likely to announce much.
“There’s a 100 percent chance that he’s not going to announce a run for president,” said Alexander, who worked for Pence from 2001 to 2007.
That means Pence will be running for governor, ending more than a year of speculation about whether he’d seek national office. The Indianapolis Star said it would post Pence’s announcement after 7 p.m. Eastern time.
The Indiana Republican stepped down from his post as chairman of the Republican Study Committee following the 111th Congress, a sure sign he wasn’t looking to advance in the House, and he has attended events in early presidential primary states meant for potential Republican candidates for president. Several former Members, including Dick Armey, have been attempting to draft Pence for a White House bid.

Popular in Paris on the Avenue des Champs-Élysée and Montmartre is the postcard scam. A middle eastern young woman will approach you, ask you if you speak English, and show you a postcard and ask you read it. It is a request by her “sister” or “mother” to raise enough money to get the sister or mother out of Iran or some place like that.
You literally have to brush them off like flies. I don’t even bother with them, but if I was to engage them, my first question would be why her Iranian sister or mother is writing a postcard to her in English?

I had a similar scam experience. Once I was sitting in McDonalds after work with mini-laptop and a guy asked me to search for an address of the Veterans’ House. He showed me the address in a strange way - he handed me his veteran’s ID inside which was the paper with the address. I.e. this way I had to see that he is a veteran. Then while I was searching he began telling me how he fought in Afghanistan, Chechnya and I don’t remember where, now he was robbed, didn’t have money to go home (by train) etc., etc. It was all quite transparent.

Interesting. If more or less sane people start announcing that they are not running against Obama, you have to guess that they are thinking “approval ratings up, optimism up, stock market breaks 12,000, unemployment inching down, maybe better wait to run until 2016 after Obama’s second term.”

re: #129 Walter L. Newton
Duh?
They do that here in CA. But they are usually non-english speakers with babies trying to feed themselves. I’ve seen that one before.

re: #140 Sergey Romanov
I had a similar scam experience. Once I was sitting in McDonalds after work with mini-laptop and a guy asked me to search for an address of the Veterans’ House. He showed me the address in a strange way - he handed me his veteran’s ID inside which was the paper with the address. I.e. this way I had to see that he is a veteran. Then while I was searching he began telling me how he fought in Afghanistan, Chechnya and I don’t remember where, now he was robbed, didn’t have money to go home (by train) etc., etc. It was all quite transparent.
One could do a book on tourist scams (and I suspect someone already has done one).
I find those kinds of incidents as much part of the cultural experience as eating the native food or trying the speak the local language.
When I travel, I always take copious notes, of people, places, odd things I see, things I perceive, facts and fancy fiction that I make up.
I like to share these short stories with people, and they become a personal catalog of info that will find itself imbedded in my plays.
I’ll have more stories (and pictures) about my 10 days in Paris over the following weeks and months… (geeesssh… is it going to take Walter months this time?)
151 | engineer cat Thu, Jan 27, 2011 3:41:59pm |
there was a scam that was very popular in nyc in the late 80s:
a person approaches you on the street. the first thing they do is compliment you for being such a nice person as to talk to them - “people in new york are so hard!”
so, it seems that their car broke down on the west side highway, and their “wife and little girl” are waiting down there in the car, and “those tow places are so hard hearted, they won’t even drive outta the garage for less than $40 up front!”
the clincher is supposed to be when they shove a wallet at you saying “here, i’ll give you my wallet as security”. this leverages the gain from the previous activity wherein the wallet was ‘obtained’ from some other person
i didn’t believe this story the first seven times it was tried on me…

As the most outspoken gay rights advocate in Uganda, a country where homophobia is so severe that Parliament is considering a bill to execute gay people, Mr. Kato had received a stream of death threats, his friends said. I’ve only slapped my head twice about Glenn Beck - no warts yet.

I think Harry Reid should allow it to come up for a vote and then we’ll have Rubio and every other Senator on the record about this. I wonder if he’s talked to Vitter and Paul about just how terrible a position this puts him in. I wonder if he’s brought up the fact that if this bill was retroactive he wouldn’t be a citizen either.
I’m wondering id either one of those geniuses have spent a second’s thought on the size of the bureaucracy that would be required to enforce the amendment in the one-in-a-billion chance it was ever adopted.
It would probably take a nice bite out of Curly’s $500 billion in budget cuts.

re: #211 Talking Point Detective
You asked why people talk about Beck on this kind of a blog, and I’m speculating about a possible explanation.
But you said that people were “freaking out.” I don’t agree.
And he isn’t just a nut - he is an extremely influential media figure.
I’m all about yelling and screaming from the rafters at the site of injustice, lies or propaganda. How much harm has been done in history by ignoring, turning away and not paying attention?
221 | Killgore Trout Thu, Jan 27, 2011 5:04:54pm |
re: #181 albusteve
why people waste all that drama on Beck is beyond me…freaking out because some nut says something nutty is a zero return investment…how freaked out and how often can one slam their head against a wall…I realize the newer posters have to get it out of their system…but Beck is just a symptom
Well there are a couple reasons. The woman is getting death threats and Beck’s fans have already made assassination attempts at the Tide Foundation. I may not like her politics but to ascribe last week’s police violence is absurd.
More importantly she’s not as evil as Bin Laden. If Republicans really start to believe this stuff (which they might eventually) then they it would become their duty to remove these people from society. There are people who would love to restart McCarthy era policies and arrest all the communists and the Jewish Mind Controlers.
Beck’s rhetoric is very dangerous.
222 | Fozzie Bear Thu, Jan 27, 2011 5:06:46pm |
So, the people who want a smaller, more intrusive government want to implement a system by which the parents of every child born in the country have to submit to screening to determine if they are legal residents so that we can keep track of who the “illegal” children are?
Do I have this correct?
These people are fucking crazy.

pots schedule mates…
heroin, a very tiny amt of uncut smack can kill anyone but a hardcore addict…
PCP, also highly addictive, can induce some real severe psychosis, literal insanity
wtf are these people thinking?
It’s simple. Back in the 30’s white kids discovered it. And since it was something they learned from the black community (along with jazz, blues & dancing suggestively) it had to be demonized (“Reefer Madness”) and criminalized. The attitudes solidified then still keep it’s very real medicinal benefits from being acknowledged by the Feds.

agreed, but I still think it’s up to Beck to rein himself in…of course there is an outside chance he will trip over his own hysteria…but for every discussion we’ve had, I don’t recall a solution to the problem that can be induced….he’s a real pro with his verbage

I don’t think there’s anything that can be done aside from general mockery but I think it’s going to be pretty effective. The next Republican candidate is going to be asked questions about the New World Order and Cloward Piven by some lefty reporter and the candidate will have to denounce Glenn Beck or appear to be a conspiracy loon. A smart Republican would dodge the question. Palin ain’t that smart.

Agreed. He’ll go away when the wingnuts wake up and get tired of being mocked as conspiracy loons.
In their circle they aren’t the ones being mocked, and it is unlikely they ever will. This is doubly true given that the way we get our information is now so fragmented and compartmentalized. You can get all your news now from wingnut sources, without ever having to contend with challenges to that kind of thinking.
I think if we had more of a singular culture (as we did for much of the 20th century), what you say would be the case. But we don’t. This country is dividing into separate subcultures which increasingly don’t overlap or interact nearly as much as subcultures of past eras.
I think this makes the current cultural and political situation in the US volatile, and it’s also hard to find any kind of precedent for it historically. The cultural changes we are undergoing now are, I think, due largely to technological changes. We don’t communicate the way we used to, and that fact is driving cultural change right now.

That’s an interesting question - just how much does our new technology create an unprecedented situation…..
We have certainly had lies and propaganda and vitriolic rhetoric throughout our existence. And media has long played a very influential role in controlling information, and as a consequence, the scope of the dialog. We could argue that McCarthy had a much more malignant affect than Beck ever will.
It certainly does feel as if something is fundamentally different - but I would imagine that our parents and grandparents felt similarly about how the environment they grew up in were different than that of their predecessors.
