Strangeness in today’s EIA numbers on oil and products supply and consumption in the US (during the last week.)
WTI oil price dropped sharply today on the report… which reported a large decrease in consumption in the US. However, the stocks of finished gasoline are quite low.
Wild, wild times in the market.

And speaking of confessions, it looks like TEPCO finally today confessed that the Fuk-1 disaster was worse than originally presented:
Nuclear fuel at Fukushima No. 1 unit likely melted after exposed
Nuclear fuel rods inside the No. 1 reactor of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi power plant likely melted after being fully exposed and are being cooled in water at the bottom of the pressure vessel, plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Thursday.
Based on the latest data after workers adjusted gauges for measuring the water level at the reactor, water could not be confirmed inside the pressure vessel at a point 5 meters below where the top of the 4-meter-long fuel rods normally are, according to the utility also known as TEPCO.
The water level is far lower than earlier thought. Measurements taken before the gauge adjustment had indicated that about 1.5 to 1.7 meters of the fuel rods were exposed and not submerged in water.
So, the rods melted in unit 1 and are at the bottom of the pressure vessel.

Just saying hello as a newly registered member here. Have lurked around on and off for a few years and finally decided to register. Not much of a commenter so I will probably go back to lurking most of the time.
As for where I sit on the political spectrum? I’m probably well left of most of the community here, but I like the fact that this place strives for (as much as can be had on the internet) balance and fact based political discussions where opposing viewpoints and their merits can be discussed openly and honestly.

There is a key scene in the book where Tom B slips The Ring over the end of his finger - and it has no effect on him. That in itself should mark him as an important character.
But in general, the film guys did a good job of keeping to the spirit of the story even if they did not have time to cover every character, detail and sub-plot.

Unless you happen to follow the German press—or unless, as I did, you happen to have taught a German law student interested in the subject of torture—you might have missed the tale of Magnus Gäfgen, the convicted child murderer currently suing the Hesse police for beating him and threatening worse in order to extract a confession.

Back in 2002, Gäfgen kidnapped an 11-year-old boy, Jakob von Metzler, whom he then murdered. Without disclosing that Jakob was dead, Gäfgen demanded a ransom of €1 million from the child’s wealthy parents. He collected the ransom, and was arrested soon after. The police, who thought Jakob was still alive, demanded to know where he was hidden. Gäfgen refused to say. According to Gäfgen’s lawsuit, they beat him, then told him a torture specialist was being flown in, a man whose training would enable him to “inflict more pain on me than I had ever experienced.” At that point he confessed, telling the police that the boy was dead and where his body could be found.Now, I am not endorsing what the authorities did in interrogating Gäfgen, but I do think it provides evidence—which should hardly be necessary—that, if the goal is to obtain information, torture sometimes works. Let me repeat that: If the goal is to obtain information, torture sometimes works.

Baby Seal Can’t Believe It’s Being Released Into The Wild

This Northern Fur Seal was released back into the wild after being rehabilitated at the Island Wildlife Natural Care Centre in British Columbia (located on Salt Spring Island). The seal, which was rehabilitated after washing ashore, was rehydrated and released on a beach near Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver Island.The young seal looks almost surprised to be let go. This is the mistake. The moral argument against torture is simply that it’s wrong, and therefore we shouldn’t do it. The moral argument would say that even if torture worked (and we know it doesn’t) we shouldn’t engage in it anyway. The author seems to think the moral argument is predicated on the efficacy or pragmatic one, and it isn’t.

I don’t know anything about the law in Germany so I have no idea if this is legal there or not.
In the US even the threat of the death penalty isn’t enough to make some serial killers confess or give up the whereabouts of their victims.

Was watching one of those “Scared Straight” TV shows last night. It works for some of the kids, they get “in the moment” and get terrified. But some of them know that these men can not touch them, so they sit there with smirks on their faces the whole time, for them? Less effective.

True again, there are 2 separate arguments. My argument over GITMO has always been that we as a society get to decide how we deal with detainees and our treaty obligations. From my POV the constitution deliberately leaves the war powers to the legislative/executive branches just for that reason. My side of the argument, pro-EIT, lost an election where that was definitely part of the debate. I can live with that since, as I see it, the voters chose.

From my POV the constitution deliberately leaves the war powers to the legislative/executive branches just for that reason. My side of the argument, pro-EIT, lost an election where that was definitely part of the debate. I can live with that since, as I see it, the voters chose.
It’s true that Obama rescinded the EIT, and also closed the black sites run by the CIA. However the administration of the black sites was already being quietly transfered to JSOC under Bush, and Obama has continued that. So we’re still running black sites and we don’t know what goes on there. The executive order closing the CIA ones is essentially for show.

Islam is not a monolith: there are splits withi the religion and gradations in the degree to which the religion permeates society in various nations. All we see in the west is the extent to which they support our short-term interests. And in the case of Pakistan, we see that this is sometimes imposible to do.
And we tend to forget how the USA toppled a deomcratically elected regime in Iran in 1953 because it was threatening our economic interests (by nationalizing its oil industry) and replaced it with a pro-western dictatorship.
That is why they hate us, they do not care about our freedoms or about who wins the mirror ball.

Turkey’s Erdogan: Hamas is a political party, not a terrorist group
Hamas is not a terror organization, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in an interview with U.S. television late Wednesday, saying he felt the recently penned Palestinian reconciliation agreement was an essential step toward Mideast peace.
Erdogan’s comments came one day after Hamas Gaza strongman Mahmoud Zahar said that while his organization would accept a Palestinian state within 1967 borders, it would never recognize Israel, as a result of the damage such a move would do to Palestinian refugees in the “diaspora.”
Senior Israeli officials, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have voiced opposition to Fatah’s new unity deal with Hamas, saying that a Palestinian government that included a terrorist group calling for Israel’s destruction could not be a partner for peace.
Speaking to Charlie Rose on Wednesday, however, the Turkish PM chimed in on the recently achieved unity agreement between rival Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas, indicating that he did not feel Hamas was an obstacle in achieving Mideast peace.
“Let me give you a very clear message, I don’t see Hamas as a terror organization. Hamas is a political party — it emerged as a political party that appeared as a political party,” Erdogan told Charlie Rose, adding: “it is a resistance movement trying to protect its country under occupation.”
Going further, the Turkish PM said the world should not “mix terrorist organizations with such an organization, and they entered into the elections,” adding that Hamas “won the elections, they had ministers, and they had parliament speakers who were imprisoned by Israel, about 35 ministers and members of parliament in Israel prisons.”
“Where is terrorism? They entered into the elections and after the elections this is how they were reacted, I mean, calling them terrorists, this would be disrespect to the will of the Palestinian people,” Erdogan added.
Jimmy Carter was unavailable for comment.

The profit margin on gas is so bad, you almost couldn’t blame stations for throwing a “quarter a gallon” day out there every few months to help make up lost revenue…figure an average of about 12 gallons per car, 200 cars in a day - it’s an extra 600 dollars…not a ton of money, but it would help offset a few expenses.

I’ll divulge that our margin on say pure gold or silver can be as little as 3.5%, but not via credit cards obviously. Those small business jewelers that pay on cc pay our fee plus the 4%. When we inform them about all this the business credit cards their bank talked them into are not so attractive. “Hey send a check as we ship and save 4%!” 4% of $1500 bucks per ounce.

That is how gas stations make their profit in Germany. German law says that reetail shops have to close Sundays and holidays, but gas stations can say open and sell “travel requisites” along with gasoline.
I am not sure who compiles the list of “travel requisites”, but in general it includes alcohol, soda pop, snacks, candy, magazines, trinkets and basically nothing that anybody actually needs.

I’ve also heard that high gas prices hurt gas stations because they typically add a fixed number of cents to the gas price as margin rather than a percentage, so their margin drops (again as a percentage) when underlying prices rise.
Not an expert on gas station business strategy, although I was once in a strategy class where the professor claimed that two gas stations can never be profitable on the same intersection unless they’re on opposite corners. My smartass hand went up rightaway, since the nearest intersection to my house has two gas stations THAT ARE NOT ON OPPOSITE CORNERS. So much for B-School.

Borrow an electric one - they’re fine for anything up to 8” in diameter. Start with an upward angle and rock the chain forward from the base, using the pointed ‘teeth’ on the body of the saw to keep it stable. Work from the ends of the branch…cutting from the top down in the middle of a long branch often ends with the branch pinching the saw blade and then you’ve screwed yourself even more.
Most importantly: Wear a flannel shirt, if you have one, or something that says “Kenworth” on it. Take a breath every two cuts and have a light beer. If you can, find a large portable stereo, set it on the roof of your car, and play Lynyrd Skynyrd loud enough so your neighbors know you’re out doing manly work.

I get nervous around power saws because I’m an untidy desk kind of person. I do have a circular saw but I’m convinced I’m going to lose some appendages to it some day.

The Brotherhood’s leaders have sounded reassuring notes concerning their commitment to democracy. Likewise, they have declared their eagerness to foster cooperation with Christians. Yet no leading Brotherhood figure has come close to addressing the hostility toward Jews that has long been central to the organization’s identity. Obviously, the prospect of victory at the polls for the Muslim Brotherhood is bad news for Israel. Less talked about, however, is the way in which a democratic validation of the group’s reliance on obfuscation and scapegoating is bad for the prospects of Egyptian democracy itself.

I have all manner of power tools and bought the appropriate safety equipment to go with them (gloves,,, goggles,,, ear guards ,,, eye protectors)
All the protective gear is neatly in the tool chest, never once used !

Tensions run high at Davis campaign party
Tempers flared in Greece Wednesday night at a party to support Jack Davis in the special election for the 26th Congressional District.Davis is running as a Tea Party candidate. A volunteer for Republican candidate Jane Corwin showed up at the event in Greece Wednesday night. That volunteer began heckling Davis because he has pulled out of a debate set for Thursday night in Buffalo.
A video of the confrontation was put on Youtube by the Erie County G.O.P. In the video, the cameraman says he was hit by Davis.

I did a 9-2 shift yesterday (am-pm) and the store was slammed, snow didn’t keep anyone away, seems to bring them out. When I was gigging in bars in the 70’s, I noticed bad weather would bring in more customers than clear nights.

I and those like me always looked forward to when the annual carnival came to town, because it always brought with it an uptick in low-level criminal activity that led to an uptick in the need for lawyers to defend the alleged criminals, who were often people associated with the carnival.

The evidence suggests Pakistan’s ISI hired or forced a Bin Laden double to live in the house. There were a lot of political benefits to both sides in pretending Bin Laden was still alive. Until Obama whacked the guy to change the subject away from the birth certificate. Nobody in the global intelligence community ever imagined a US President would risk military lives on such a cheap political act. Bush could have done the same thing in Fall, 2008 and probably helped McCain beat Obama - but he didn’t.

Good article… don’t know his show, but there are a lot of smaller operations like his. Because of my early contacts in the carnival/outdoor amusement business, I moved into booking up front magic shows at fairs and outdoor events, grandstand and main stage shows, which were scripted and mounted in Dallas, and then I sent them out to the venue.
I was good friends with Paul Osborne of Paul Osborne and Associates (Dallas). He produced really big shows at the major parks, Six Flags etc. and we worked into an arrangement. He passed on contacts to me for smaller shows that he didn’t want to handle, didn’t have time to handle, or wasn’t “big money” enough for him to handle. So, I gave the client a mini-version of what Paul offered, and everyone was happy.
My best client at the time was the State Fair of Texas. Was a good feather in my cap and good for business to have the SFOT as one of your show clients.

Little stuff: petty theft, public drunkenness, the occasional brawl/assault. Occasionally it would escalate to felony territory, but not that often. If they gave the cop a hard time then you would get the resisting arrest charge, which we all knew meant that the cop felt the need to tune the guy up. And sometimes the search incident to arrest would turn up some drugs, which back then were a pretty big deal.

Little stuff: petty theft, public drunkenness, the occasional brawl/assault. Occasionally it would escalate to felony territory, but not that often. If they gave the cop a hard time then you would get the resisting arrest charge, which we all knew meant that the cop felt the need to tune the guy up. And sometimes the search incident to arrest would turn up some drugs, which back then were a pretty big deal.
Well, like I stated, the ones I’ve met/ known are just hard workers spending most of their time seeting up, running the show, breaking it down and hitting the road. most of their “off” time being spent right on the carny grounds

Could be the lot rent-a-cops… most jurisdictions require some sort of security on show lots, and the cops will try to police what happens on the lot. Carneys publicly drunk, even on the lot, are still drunk.
The cops also look out for illegal games (count joints etc) and frequently shut down those operators.

Oh sure… so have I. Depends on what happened, who is paying the rent-a-cops and a number of other factors… like a bonus for the rent-a-cop.
Most (not all) shows have become big business, and they can’t afford the older stereotyped antics that besotted the trade in the past.
That article you linked to is a good example of that. The show owner in that article spoke more like a CEO than a sideshow barker.
There is too much back end money invested in carnivals, the rides, the joints, the food service (known as “grab joints”)… insurance and other costs… you fuck up and you’ll loose a fortune.

I think your points can be made better by not using language that demonises a whole group of people. You as the speaker/writer know its not your intent to do so, and that’s fine, but not everyone reading realises that you intend to make those distinctions.
If I were a Muslim, I wouldn’t feel welcome anywhere I see phrases like Islamic scum. It wouldn’t reassure me to have you point out you don’t mean me or Muslims like me. I just think it’s language that is unnecessarily inflammatory and can put people off.

This is actually a good comment, not for the reason you intended. Nazis are all scum by definition, just like terrorists. You can call the IRA or the Real IRA terrorist scum, but if you call them Irish scum you’re acting like those in northern Ireland who DO consider all the irish scum, and consider themselves british, not Irish.

- Irish scum -> dandy
- black scum -> no. “stupid” to think this would be OK.

Trying to think of some other groups that might be granted the same consideration as black people (in terms of not being lumped in with any terrorist elements they happen to have in their midst).
Are PETA “vegetarian scum”?
ETA? Are they “Basque scum”?
How about depression-era protesters? “Farmer scum”?
